In a world inhabited by great monsters with awesome power able to wipe life off the face of the planet, there exists certain ponies called Monster Hunters, who hunt these beasts to protect the lives of the innocent.

Twilight Sparkle, a young Unicorn who merely likes to study these magnificent creatures, has no interest in becoming a hunter and fighting any monsters, unlike her friends. But when a mysterious jet-black and purple dragon appears in Ponyville and attacks the place, utterly destroying it, it's up to Twilight, the only uninjured pony in town, to learn everything there is to know about hunting monsters, track down the black dragon and kill it. But with a new virus infecting the world, will she be able to do it?
