Chapter 12: [Act 3] (Chapter 2) Law of the Jungle

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

The two hunters had found an abandoned, and surprisingly not wrecked pier not far from the swamplands. So naturally, they decided to dock there. Twilight lowered the sails and the staircase to allow herself off, while Teal tied a rope around the dock to refrain the Dragonship from floating away. Finally, the two stood beside each other on the boardwalk, staring off into swamp.

"They used to call this place something else before it became a swamp" the teal mare spoke "Hayseed Forest, the most beautiful forest in all of Equestria. My village was in here as well before it was destroyed, and with it's destruction the forest withered away and became this place."

"You used to live here?" Twilight asked "I'm sorry about your loss..."

"No, no, it's fine..." lightly chuckled the hunter "When I was a little filly, a wise stallion once told me if you're going to look into the past, use it to look into the future."

"Words to live by" the lavender Unicorn nodded before turning her attention back to the swamp "So, are we going to explore the 'Hayseed Swamps'?"

"Hayseed Swamps..." Teal smiled "Nice name... And yeah, I'm ready, baby! Let's find the crap out of that flower!"

"I'm not sure if you can find it over and over again, Teal" grinned Twilight, taking her insect glaive off her back with her magic and letting her Kinsect fly around a bit.

"Oh, aren't you the little jokester?" she laughed before taking out her dual blades with her wings "Alright, let's do this!"

The two hunters traveled through the dense swamp covered with thick vines, dead trees, rotting logs and, of course, marshes. Cries of different kinds of monsters both big and small could be heard echoing through the entire area, giving Twilight a few chills down her spine. Who knew what ferocious beasts lurked in the depths of this place? Despite her worrying, she pressed on, hoping to find the flower and recover her friend's memory. That's when a thought crossed her mind.

"Teal," she asked her Pegasus partner, getting her attention "do you have any idea what the flower we're looking for even looks like?"

"I thought you knew, baby" the teal mare answered honestly.

"Well great! We're on a blind quest!" shouted Twilight a little too loudly "I accept the quest, hoping to save Fluttershy from her amnesia, only to find out I don't even know what we're looking for!"

"Twi, don't worry about it, okay?" Teal calmed her partner down "I'm sure it being a rare flower, we'll find it atop a dirt pillar being guarded by some kind of monster, just like the movies!"

"I don't think it works like that, Teal..." smiled the lavender mare, cheering up a bit.

"Well, it was worth a shot" she shrugged "Right, should we get moving or-"

All of a sudden, they heard a loud, mammalian roar coming from around their current vicinity. The tall trees above the two mares began to shake in a path, as if something was following them. They tread carefully through the area, trying not to attract more attention then they already had. After no more than ten steps, Twilight felt something breathing on her neck.

"Teal..." she said quietly.

"I feel it too..." Teal spoke in voice of pure fear.

Slowly and hesitantly, the two turned around to see what had been following them. There stood, or rather was hanging from it's long orange and hooked tail upside down, a large orange and yellow mammal with a long, anteater-like snout, two green eyes, long arms with three long and sharp claws protruding from them each, pale wing-like webbing between the arms and the torso, and two gigantic red ears with two teeth-like spikes on the lobes of each.

"Teal, don't move..." the lavender Unicorn said as she looked at her partner "It's a Kecha Wacha, a more or less recently discovered mammal with the ability to climb and swing from trees with it's claws and spit mucus from it's nose. It's usually peaceful unless somepony was to anger it. Maybe we haven't angered it yet?" she turned back to the lemur, which was still just hanging there, watching the two closely "It looks like we haven't, so just back away slowly and-"

The Kecha Wacha saw that the two hunters were moving back slowly and freaked out. It let out a roar and quickly climbed back up into the treetops, worrying Twilight.

"I think it might be angry now, baby!" the teal mare shouted. And she was right. The lemur suddenly sprouted from the trees and onto the ground in front of them, letting out another roar.

"Run!" Twilight shouted as she placed her insect glaive on her back "We need to find an easier place to fight it and not where it has the advantage!"

"Couldn't agree more!" Teal shouted back before putting away her dual blades and began running away with Twilight from the creature in the orange hide. Naturally, the beast followed them by using it's claws to swing through the trees faster than Twilight and Teal could run. It landed in front of their path and swung a claw at them, forcing them to move left, the only safe path left. The monster once again followed them.

"Teal, what can you remember about this place before you left?" the Unicorn shouted as she ran through the swamp with her friend "Is there a clearing somewhere? A landmark to point us in the right direction? Anything now would really be nice!!"

"Um... um!" the teal hunter frantically looked around the area they were running through to see if there was something that reminded her of anything clearing-like. Finally, she saw a scratched tree and smiled.

"That scratched tree!" she nodded at the landmark "Turn right there!"

Twilight nodded and did what she was told. The two ponies were now on a rather bumpy path with many downed logs and thick vines. To remove these obstacles, the lavender mare whipped out her glaive and began to hack away at the vines, clearing their path. Unfortunately for them, the Kecha Wacha continued to swing through the trees and once again land right in front of them. This time however, the Unicorn pole vaulted over the lemur as Teal began to fly around it, confusing it and making it angrier.

"Twi, babe, I think it might've gotten more pissed at us!" Teal landed next to her partner and began running again before looking back and stating the obvious.

"Gee, really?!" Twilight yelled "Just find the next-"

"Got it!" the teal mare nodded at an old, rotting and illegible sign, a narrow pathway to the right of it "Turn left there!"

Twilight skid to a halt to turn left and follow her partner's instructions, when all of a sudden the Kecha Wacha burst out from the treetops in front of the pathway, flailing it's claws around like crazy. It covered it's face with it's ears and let out a bellowing roar, forcing the two mares to cover their ears. The mammal then went back up into the trees to continue following them.

"Go! GO!" the moss green maned Pegasus shouted before her and her partner dashed off through the narrow pathway. At long last, they found a large clearing of dirt, cloudy skies and more marshy swamp to which they could combat the giant lemur. As if on cue, the orange mammal, now with it's face uncovered again, leaped out of the trees and into the clearing.

"Alright you overgrown lemur!" Twilight began as she readied her insect glaive and as Teal whipped out her dual blades again "It's time for you to-"

The lavender Unicorn didn't even finish her sentence as she heard a loud cheetah roar followed by a black dragon with paws at the end of it's wings coming down from above and tackling the Kecha Wacha, snapping it's neck in one brief motion, killing it. It never paid any mind to the two hunters, giving the lavender one a good look at it. Some of it's jet black scales had fur on them, as well as the tail being completely covered in it. The creature also had cat-like ears and a beak over it's mouth, making it look like some kind of crossover between cheetah, bird and dragon. Finally, it's wings were sleek with dark red webbing between each of it's fingers and it's eyes were glowing naturally orange. It was a Nargacuga, king of the jungle.

"A Nargacuga? Here?" Twilight wondered "They're usually found in the Galloping Gorge Forest. Why is it here on the exact opposite side of Equestria?"

"No time to think now, baby! We have to fight!" Teal loudly whispered as she tugged her partner along, who resisted her pulling "C'mon, stop being so stubborn! I've fought Nargacugas before and they're not exactly friendly or fair with their atta- Are you even listening?!"

Suddenly, they both heard a loud screeching noise from above, snapping the lavender mare out of her trance and making her look up. There she saw a familiar shadow of a certain black and purple monster and gasped in fear. The infectious scales would fall onto the Nargacuga at any moment.

"Teal, run..." Twilight didn't even bother whispering as she pushed her friend backwards from the area "Don't ask why, just do it!"

"But Twilight, we can take this-"

"It's not about the Nargacuga, Teal!" the lavender Unicorn turned her head towards her partner and shouted "It's about what that black dragon up there can do to the Nargacuga! If the scales from the dragon above fall onto the Nargacuga, we're basically finished!"

"Twilight, you're not making any sense!" Teal argued "What are you-"

Just as Teal was about to finish her sentence, the cat-like dragon in front of them began to freak out. It clawed at it's head and let out a growl of pain before all of a sudden calming down. It turned to look at the two hunters, it's eyes now glowing red with purple highlights around them. It let out a roar of anger. This was when Twilight readied her glaive again, realizing there was no backing out of this. Her partner just smiled before she too readied her weapon.

The infected cat dragon ran around the swamp clearing, knocking down a few trees and preventing the escape of the two mares. It then skid across the ground coming from the left and faced it's prey again, roaring a cry that echoed through the entire wood.

Teal wasted no time in charging forward, hoping to deal damage to the beast like any other Nargacuga. Unfortunately for her, this wasn't any other Nargacuga, and it bounced backwards before charging right at the teal mare, inflicting damage to her and sending her flying back. He lavender partner quickly rushed over to where she was downed and handed her a potion that she bought from earlier.

"Thanks..." the teal Pegasus smiled before drinking the potion "Never saw that coming... How'd old Narga over there even do that? I know they're fit, but they're not that fit."

"Once this is over, I'll tell you" the Unicorn nodded as she helped her partner up "Right now, focus on dodging it's new attacks and severing it's tail, okay?"

"Got you loud and clear, baby!" Teal smirked before running to the back of the Nargacuga, distracting it for her partner.

Twilight smiled before running up to the black cat dragon and pole-vaulting onto it's back. She landed and pulled out her carving knife with her magic before stabbing it, hanging onto it's fur whenever it tried to knock her off. Eventually, the lavender hunter managed to knock the dragon over, giving her and her partner a perfect chance to attack it. Teal went for the tail while Twilight went to cut off it's wings' webbing so it couldn't maneuver as quickly around the field. Before they could however, the Nargacuga got back up and roared at the two as it began hopping around the clearing again, looking for a chance to strike it's prey.

"There's gotta be a ledge somewhere where we can jump off of and strike it down..." the purple maned Unicorn looked around frantically before seeing something they could use, and sighing "...we can use the Kecha Wacha's body to leap off and knock it over."

"Eww..." the moss green maned Pegasus shuddered in disgust "Can't we use a tree?"

"And risk it falling down on us?" Twilight said in a convincing tone "That corpse is the only- LOOK OUT!!" she turned her head just in time for them to move out of the way of an incoming lunge from the cat dragon they were opposing "We don't have time to argue about this, just do it!"

"Fine, fine..." Teal rolled her eyes and ran off towards the now slightly eaten and now beginning to rot carcass of the giant lemur, as did Twilight. They waited for the monster to get closer to them before they ran up the body and leaped off of it, bringing their weapons down onto it and knocking it over. They went to destroy their assigned parts and were finally able to do so, the tail being flung a few feet away from the Nargacuga and the wing webbing being torn in half. The beast roared in agony as it lost blood from it's tail, but managed to shrug it off as it entered rage mode, it's eyes glowing more then they already had been and small streams of light now following their every movement.

"Watch out!" Twilight called out to her partner. But the teal mare just stood in the face of her opponent.

"Don't worry, babe..." she smirked "I have a little trick up my sleeve..." she thrust her dual bladed up in the air with her wings. As she did this, a red light enveloped her, appearing to make her stronger. The lavender Unicorn had read this somewhere before. She believed it was called demon mode, and it made the user of dual blades only slightly stronger. Remembering that tidbit of information, Twilight backed away from her partner so she could deal some damage without being disturbed.

"Take THIS!!" Teal charged forward at the Nargacuga's beak, hitting it so much that it actually broke, forcing the cat dragon to wince in pain, giving enough time for Twilight to come out and strike it's belly. Finally, she thrust her insect glaive straight into the beast's chest, it giving out one final roar of agony before dying, it's body going limp.

"Wow... Never did I think in my life would I have to take on a Nargacuga, let alone an infected one..." Twilight huffed as she pulled out her glaive, now covered in the infected purple blood "That was really intense..."

"You think that was bad?" smirked the teal Pegasus as she put away her blades, and with them her demon mode "You should take on a Zinogre next. They're deemed to be the fastest monster in the world. I hear that when they're fully charged, they can outrun an Iodrome on twelve cups of coffee!"

"Yeah..." the purple maned mare chuckled nervously, remembering her fight with the Zinogre at the top of Foal Mountain "Maybe I'll fight one someday! You never know!"

"Anyway, you were going to tell me about that Frenzy Virus thing?" Teal Speck asked.

"Oh yes, right, of course!" Twilight nodded as she began explaining to her partner the dangers of the disease "Long story short, The Frenzy Virus is a dangerous disease that only infects monsters and makes them haywire and much more deadly. It is spread by a mysterious dragon known as the Gore Magala, which was the thing that destroyed my hometown of Ponyville, injuring everypony and kidnapping my friends, placing them in different parts of the world. That's why I'm here; to save my friends and defeat the Gore Magala once and for all."

"So basically, you began as a total noob, but you're slowly growing stronger to eventually take out this 'Gore Magala' thing?" slightly laughed Teal "Nah, I shouldn't laugh. That's very noble of you. Kinda makes me jealous..."

"It's okay, Teal..." the lavender Unicorn patted her friend on the back "Now, onto more important matters. Such as HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO LEAVE WHEN GIGANTIC TREES ARE BLOCKING OUR PATH!!!"

"Whoa, whoa, calm down, baby! Do you want to attract another monster here?" the moss green maned hunter asked with a stern look, Twilight shaking her head "Good, good... Now, let's try and figure this one, out together, okay?"

"Yeah, okay..." Twilight nodded with a smile "What do you propose?"
