Chapter 3: [Act 1] (Chapter 2) Equestria's Last Hope

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Twilight tried her best to regain her balance after the initial shock of what Princess Celestia has just said. Would she really have to become a Monster Hunter; a profession she never really had an interest in? Before she could complain and ask why Celestia would say this, the white Alicorn spoke again.

"I know this must come as a shock to you, Twilight," she spoke with as calm a voice as possible "but look around you. Most, if not all survivors here have been injured, and I too have been hurt by the debris left by the Gore Magala. Twilight, you might be our last hope."

"B-But... I know nothing ABOUT hunting monsters!" Twilight argued, trying her best to get her out of the pit the Gore Magala dug her "Why not just get somepony from another city to help us? I'm sure they'd be more than willing to-"

"My dearest Twilight" Celestia said a she stroked her student's mane to calm her down "You are the only uninjured pony in the world who knows what that beast can do, therefore, your can prepare yourself better than the other hunters of the world. You are this world's last chance should this monster be the bringer of the apocalypse."

Twilight was still slightly skeptical if she should agree to becoming a hunter or not. It was true what her mentor had said about the black dragon possibly having so much power that it could wipe all live off the face of the planet, and her friends needed help should they still even be alive by this point.

"If your agree, you can have a chance to get a closer look at monsters and study them..." Celestia tried to further the lavender Unicorn's decision toward becoming a monster hunter. As soon as Twilight heard this, her eyes grew larger and began to sparkle with excitement as a smile crept onto her face.

"I'll do it!" she nodded furiously "But, how will you be able to teach me how to do things when your ribs are broken?"

"I have an idea, so fear not, my faithful student" Celestia chuckled softly "Bring me back to the hospital and we will discuss my method of teaching."

"Right" Twilight nodded before taking the injured Alicorn on her back and heading off towards the hospital, albeit slowly due to the weight of her mentor stopping her from walking too quickly.

"Okay, okay, so lemme get this straight..." Rainbow Dash, who was still in her hospital bed, began to chuckle a bit "You're saying that the giant monster we saw is powerful enough to be considered the bringer of the apocalypse, and you're sending in Twilight, the mare who knows literally nothing about fighting monsters, in to save the day, am I right?"

"That is correct" Princess Celestia was resting in the bed right beside Rainbow's.

"No offense, princess," snickered the rainbow maned Pegasus "but don't you think that might be a tiny bit of a bad idea? I mean, this is the bringer of Armageddon we're talking about here. And you think somepony as untrained as Twilight will be able to defeat it? No offense, Twi."

"None taken..." Twilight rolled her eyes as a small sigh escaped her mouth.

"While I understand where you're coming from, Rainbow Dash," the solar princess spoke again "but nopony in Ponyville, from what I can gather, is uninjured from the attack. Twilight is the only one who is uninjured and has seen what it can do, thus making her slightly more prepared."

"Alright then, fine, she's our last hope and everything" the cyan Pegasus finally caved "But still, that doesn't make the fact that Twilight has no knowledge under her belt wrong! How is she going to get training done when you and I are in bed and seriously hurt?"

"I might know somepony that can help her" Celestia remembered "But the journey is a bit long and the path is filled with monsters of all shapes and sizes. It wouldn't be wise to let Twilight go that way. So, I'm letting her borrow my sword."

"You're what?" Twilight asked out of shock "Princess, I can't have that kind of responsibility! It's your sword! What if I lose it? What if it breaks when I'm fighting a monster?! I just-"

"Twilight, it's okay" the white Alicorn smiled and reassured her student "My sword is a symbol of your allegiance to me. Take it to the mare who lives on the treacherous path I will give directions to in a moment, and she will teach you the art of monster hunting. Besides, it was getting quite old anyway, and I needed a new one."

"W-Well, I'm honored then!" Twilight smiled before taking the Rathalos sword, which was until now leaning against Celestia's right bedside, with her magic "Such a refined and powerful weapon. I'll have no problem taking down anything now!"

"I'm glad to see my sword has filled you with courage, Twilight" smiled Celestia "But, if I may teach you a lesson right now, a hunter should never be overconfident in just their weapons. Skill is also needed to take down foes, especially if those foes are particularly stronger than you are."

"Understood, your highness" nodded Twilight "So, may I have these directions please?"

After Twilight left the hospital, she did her best to recite what her mentor had told her. A little past Ponyville, there should be a lone cedar tree, which was thankfully undamaged from the attack. After that, find the hand-like branch and follow where it was pointing. Keep following that direction until you came across a crossroad. Twilight was at that crossroad right now.

"...then you turn... left?" Twilight tapped her noggin with her front right hoof as she struggled to remember the correct way to the mare's home "Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was left. The other way was home to a somewhat docile Zinogre, if I remembered correctly..."

As Twilight turned left, she saw that she was now facing an unknown and seemingly darker forest than the Everfree forest. Swallowing her fear as much as she could, she entered the forest and hoped for the best. It was difficult to see, just as she thought. However, by a miracle, some bugs had begun to light up the way.

"Thank goodness!" Twilight breathed a sigh of relief "Now I can at least somewhat see my way forward."

Walking a bit more, the lavender Unicorn accidentally tripped over a rock and fell flat on her belly with a thud. Right in front of her was one of the glowing bugs that had lit up her way. She took a closer look and saw that these bugs were not only generating light, but electricity as well. She quickly deduced these were Thunderbugs.

"But, if there are Thunderbugs here, that means..." the gears turned in Twilights head before realization struck her hard "Oh no..."

Suddenly, there was a 'woosh' sound coming from the trees around her. The noise was fast, but it sounded as if it came from something very large. The lavender Unicorn looked around frantically to try and find whatever was tracking her down, until finally she felt something breathing down her neck. She slowly turned around to see two glowing red eyes staring directly down at her. A low growl emanated from the owner of the eyes and many blue, electrically charged striped appeared below the two red orbs.

The beast finally gave off a loud, ear-shattering wolf-like roar as the area around it was plagued with thunder, allowing Twilight to see the beast in all it's horrifying glory. It was large, quadrupedal and very wolf-like monster with two horn on its head, sharp fangs, and a turquoise hide with a few dark beige, rocky scales all over it's forelegs and backlegs. It also had a long tail with many of the same rocky scales protruding from the end of it, and dirty white fur on it's head, back, chest, legs and tail. It was called the Thunder Wolf Wyvern, otherwise known as a Zinogre. And as Twilight could clearly see, it was pissed.

"Um, nice doggy..." the lavender mare slowly walked backwards from the beast "Good doggy... stay, boy..."

The Zinogre, not technically being a dog, did not listen to Twilight and only wanted the purple maned Unicorn out of it's territory. It roared again before pouncing over Twilight, leaving some of its electrical charge behind to damage her. The Zinogre knocked over a few trees in one terrifyingly fast tail swing to allow some more room for the fight to continue. It then stared right at the terrified mare before charging right at her in a fit of anger.

Just as Twilight was beginning to think of her last words, the Zinogre was knocked to its side by a powerful weapon she had never seen before. It was an axe that appeared to just be a sword and large shield glued together, but it was exerting powerful energy. The weapon itself was dark blue with a green slime-like substance shaped like a diamond in the middle of the blade area. Holding the axe in her magical grasp was a mare wearing a full set of Brachydios armour. She turned to Twilight and jerked her head to the side, telling her to move out of the way of the fight. The Zinogre then got up and jump-turned to face the mare.

"Listen here!" the mare shouted "I though I told you to begone and travel back to Foal Mountain where you belong! You're terrorizing everypony in Hollow Shades!"

The Zinogre did nothing but roar at the mare before charging straight at her. In response, she rested her axe on her back and waited for the Zinogre to come closer. As soon as it was right where she wanted it to be, she swung her weapon has hard as she could. This attack hit the electrical beast in the face and sliced off half of it's left horn, leaving a scar across its left eye as well. The Zinogre quickly bounced back at this attack landed on it's feet before roaring. However, this roar seemed to summon some Thunderbugs onto it's furry back, giving the beast some more electrical power that it displayed in a show of lightning that came from it's body.

"So you wish to do this the hard way, hmm?" the mare spoke with a hint of cockiness "Very well then. Let's do this the hard way!"

The fanged wyvern roared at the mare before once again charging straight at her. However, this time the mare began to run away from it, but not in fear. No, instead, the mare ran slightly up a tree before jumping off and landing right onto the Zinogre's back. She then took out her carving knife and began stabbing the ever-living hell out of it. It struggled to shake her off, but she held on to it's fur whenever it did. Eventually, the mare won the bull ride and the Zinogre was sent tumbling down onto the ground. The mare then detached the blade from the axe to reveal the weapon doubled as a sword and shield. She then began slashing her sword at the Zinogre's head as much as she could. Finally, the beast couldn't take it anymore; it got up from it's position on the ground and ran off to who knows where.

(Music stop)

"Incredible..." Twilight spoke as she came out from the trees after witnessing such a battle "You're weapon is unlike anything I've ever seen before. You were able to drive off the Zinogre and save me. Thank-"

Before she could finish my sentence, the mare put her sword and shield on her side and rushed up to the purple maned Unicorn, brought out her carving knife with her magic and it placed right up to my neck.

"Who are you?" the mare asked "What business have you here?"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" Twilight tried to calm her down from doing anything too rash "Let's not be trying to kill anypony now, okay?"

After a tense few seconds with the danger of having her throat slit, the mare brought the carving knife down once she realized the Unicorn wasn't a threat.

"You didn't answer my question" the mare spoke again "Who are you, and what is your reason for being here?"

"My name is Twilight Sparkle" the Unicorn answered her "I come from a town a little ways away from here called Ponyville that was utterly wrecked with the appearance of a new species of monster called Gore Magala. I was the town's only uninjured survivor of the attack, and I've come here looking for somepony to train me to become a Monster Hunter so I can track the beast down and get rid of it once and for all. I'm also the student of Celestia, who-"

"Celestia..." the mare said "There's a name I haven't heard in a long time... You say you're acquainted with her? Then prove it."

"Oh, right!" Twilight remembered. She then whipped out the sword Celestia had given her as a sign of allegiance to her from her side holder and showed it to the mare. The mare inspected it for a moment before gasping and realizing it was indeed the princess's sword.

"Forgive me, Miss Twilight..." the mare bowed before taking off her helmet and shaking her medium-length blue mane to get it out of her eyes. She then stood back up, letting Twilight see her greyish blue coat and very familiar smile.

"My name is Luna" the mare greeted "I was once known as Princess Luna, Princess of the Night and sister to Princess Celestia."

Author's Notes:

Best princess has come! You may now all have a 10 minute clapping period! YAAAAAAAAAY!!!

So yes, Luna was indeed the pony Twilight was looking for to help train her. How will she train her? Well, first she needs a weapon, and I already have a good idea what weapon it should be.
