Chapter 8: [Act 2] (Chapter 2) The Serpent of the Ruins

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Twilight, Teal and Applejack had all entered the village elder's home which was thankfully two houses down from the train station. The elder's home had clearly seen better days with all the cracks and dust floating around his home, but so long as he didn't mind it, then everyone was okay with him. After a quick walk through his wreck of a home, the three mares finally found him sitting on a large red pillow, smoking a pipe. He was a scrawny old Earth Pony stallion with a dull green coat and long greying mane and beard. He was in fact so skinny that one could see his bones stick out from his flesh.

"Now Twilight," Applejack spoke "elder Crab Apple 'ere is mah great, great, great, great, uh... very great grandpa. Ah'm jus' gonna tell ya this now so ya dun freak out later, but he's so old 'at he's actually met with the original Monster Hunter."

"He what?!" Twilight's eyes sparkled with excitement.

"Yeah, now please dun remind him o' his age unless he jokes about it, understood?" the orange mare's voice got strict very quickly, to which her lavender friend piped down and nodded in agreement, as did Teal "Thank ya kindly, Twi. Ya too, Teal. He's blind too, so jus' a head's up..." the country mare smiled before turning to to Crab Apple "Hello? Great grandpa Crabby?"

"Eh? Who's 'ere?!" Crab Apple shouted "Show yerselves!"

"Mr. Apple?" Teal began, clearing her throat "I'm a representative for the town of WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT THING IN THE SAND?!!"

"Hmm?" the old stallion was a tad bit confused "Ah'm not sure ah've heard o' 'at particular town... Is it one of 'em new ones ya darn kids are buildin' 'ese days? Back in mah prime, we only had a simple name fer our towns, like this 'ere Appleloosa!"

"No, great grandpa, we're talkin' 'bout 'at monster y'all were tellin' me 'bout a while back" Applejack intervened "Y'know, the one from the great war?"

"Oh, ah think ah 'member now..." the elder recalled "Yer talkin' 'bout the Dah'ren Mohran, right?"

"Is that what the monster out there is called, sir?" Twilight asked Crab Apple, trying her best not to breath in the smoke emanating from the elder pony's pipe.

"Darn tootin'!" the elderly stallion cackled "The Dah'ren Mohran is as ancient as me, ah'm afraid! It was sealed up a long time ago 'cuz it did sum purdy bad stuff back in mah day!"

"Is 'at ALL ya know 'bout it, grandpa?" Twilight's country friend asked.

"Youngin', ah may have fought the darn thin' back when ah was in mah prime, but ah dun know too much 'bout it other than it's pure evil, it is!" Crab Apple chuckled "But, ah suppose ifin ya REALLY want ta know more 'bout it, ah'd suggest headin' off to some old ruins 'bout a few kilometres down south o' 'ere. Y'all should find somethin' o' importance 'ere."

"Thank you, sir" Teal spoke after being quiet for a while "Well, I guess it's time to go cave exploring with two very, very attractive mares..."

"Teal, do ya happen ta be a fillyfooler?" Applejack deadpanned her question.

"Take a wild guess and let your heart decide the answer, baby..." the teal Pegasus winked at the orange mare, making her blush a bit.

"L-Let's jus' git this overwith..." sighed the blonde Earth Pony.

"Before ya head off, can ah see 'at staffy weapon o' yers, ya purple filly?" the elder suddenly asked, surprising Twilight, not because his voice was sudden, but because if what Applejack said was true, how could he have known what Twilight and her weapon looked like, let alone that she even had a weapon?

"How did-"

"Ah may be blind, youngin'," Crab Apple smiled "but ah've lived so long, ah've grown somewhat o' a connection ta the world, lettin' me technically see mah surroundin's'. How else would ah know where ta pick up mah pipe, eh? Now, the staff, ifin ya will..."

Twilight nodded and let the elder pony take a closer look at her staff. In ran his hoof over the surface of it and the Kinsect before nodding and preparing to give his final verdict.

"A fine weapon indeed... jus' gimme a sec..." Crab Apple said before turning around and tampering with the glaive for a bit. Before the owner of the insect glaive could say anything, the elder turned around and revealed to her that he had upgraded her weapon to look a bit like a Zinogre if it had turned into a glaive.

"M-Mr. Crab Apple" the lavender mare said, amazed that he managed to upgrade a weapon he clearly hadn't seen before "Thank you so much!"

"Ah may be blind, but ah have some experience with tamperin' with weapons you youngin's' are wieldin' nowadays..." the elder smiled.

"Again, thank you!" Twilight said before she got a closer look at the old stallion's eyes "How intriguing... Would you mind if I asked you a few questions about your eyes and your past?"

"C'mon!" Applejack, despite being in crutches, pulled the lavender Unicorn out of her grandfather's house "Thank you, great grandpa!"

"Anytime..." the old stallion chuckled.

"Bu- Wait!" the curious newbie hunter struggled to break free "I have so many questions! How old are you? What's you're blood type? How did you defeat the Dah'ren Mohran? Did you have a relationship with the elder first hunter?"

"The elder first hunter?" wondered the town's elder "Oh, ah 'member 'er... What a beauty she was, ah tells ya!"

"WHAT WAS HER NAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaammmeeee...." Twilight's voice faded away from the old stallion's ears. He just wore a goofy grin across his face as the sound drowned out.

"What were we talkin' 'bout again?" he asked no one in particular.

Applejack had opted out of joining Twilight and Teal due to her injuries and hoped for the best of luck to them. After literally everyone in Appleloosa refused to take Twilight and her friend to the ruins, the two had no choice but to walk their way to the ancient site, and already they were exhausted and thirsty from the dryness of the desert.

"Twilight, I need water..." whined the teal hunter "It's hot and I'm thirsty... I wish those jerks back at Appleloosa actually let us get a ride there. It would have been quicker, easier, and not as hot. Seriously, I need something strong right about now... How about some mega juice?" she took out some mega juice from her saddlebag and took a swig "Ahhh... Das sum good ass crap right there..."

"Teal, you're not addicted to mega juice, are you?" Twilight asked her partner "If not, could I have some as well? We need as much energy as we can get on our way to the ruins."

"Hmmm? Oh, yeah, sure..." Teal Speck spoke before going through her bag, pulling out another mega juice and tossing it over to the lavender mare "Drink up and stuff."

"Thanks..." the lavender hunter smiled before she tilted the bottom of her glass up and let the juice come flowing into her mouth, giving her extra stamina "Ahhh... I needed that..."

"Race you to the ruins?" the moss green maned Pegasus asked as she prepared herself to run.

"Eh, sure, why not?" Twilight grinned before getting into position "Ready? Five, four... GO!" the lavender mare ran on ahead of a surprised Teal.

"H-Hey! No fair!" Teal laughed as she as well ran ahead to try and catch up with Twilight.

As they ran, they failed to noticed the long, serpentine silhouette staring at them from behind a rock formation, it's two glowing red eyes glaring at the duo in both hunger and rage. Slowly, the shadow began to dig underground and follow the mares to their destination.

Eventually, as the two mares traversed though the sand, they found something emerging from the great desert. On closer inspection, they realized that it was in fact two tall and decaying pillars, signalling that they found the ruins they were searching for. Getting even closer to their newly discovered location, they found a small natural-cave-like entrance to the ruins.

"You ready?" Teal asked her partner "If it gets too scary in there, you could always hold me..."

"I'll be fine, Teal" Twilight assured with a smile "No matter how hard you try, you'll never get me to like you."

"...damn..." the teal hunter sighed.

As the two entered the extremely dark cavern, Twilight cast an illumination spell to see a bit better. It was there where they found a long hallway going downwards deeper into the old building. The corridor itself was covered in cobwebs and more than likely littered with scorpions and snakes, which, once she realized might be down there, freaked Twilight out.

"Y'know, maybe we can find another way to defeat the Dah'ren Mohran..." she chuckled nervously "That train cannon seemed to do the trick, right?"

"Are you afraid of something, baby?" Teal Speck chuckled as she put one of her hooves over the back of her neck "Could it be the spiders? The scorpions?" she got close to her ear and whispered "The snakes?"

The teal mare felt a shutter down Twilight's neck as she held it. She just gave a quick smirk and proceeded to hug the terrified lavender, nipping her ear with her teeth lightly and sensually, which sent more shivers down her spine. Twilight let Teal have her fun for just a few more seconds before pushing her off and taking a deep breath.

"I-I'm fine..." she said "Maybe, y'know... They won't be so bad. Maybe I can get through this. Yeah, I can get through this!"

"If you insist..." Teal rolled her eyes "But remember, if you start to feel scared, you can always hold onto me, okay?"

"F-Fine..." Twilight blurted out her answer, blushing all the while as she turned around and began walking down the hallway "B-But... please don't n-nip my ear again, o-okay?"

"Fine, fine, I follow" the teal hunter nodded her head, not really making any promises.

Finally, after traveling down the hallway for what seemed like an eternity, the two mares found themselves in the heart of the ruins. The room was large and circular, with sand as the floor and a rectangular plaque in the centre. On closer inspection, Twilight was quite surprised to see that the word on the plaque were written in modern day Equestrian, meaning whoever wrote this was a time traveler, or the language hadn't changed much. The lavender hunter agreed that the latter was more likely.

"Teal, this is written in a legible language!" Twilight's nerd mode was currently turned on, as they say. Her eyes had lit up and her smile had expanded considerably.

"Well, what are you waiting for?" Teal grinned "Read it!"

"Right" Twilight nodded before turning back to the plaque and starting to read "By the power of the gods, I have blessed this place with a sacred weapon powerful enough and fast enough to defeat the Dah'ren Mohran should it ever arise in future generations. In order to awaken this power, one must-"

Before Twilight even got a chance to finish what the script had to say, a large snake-like monster dug out from the centre of the room, destroying the plaque and with it, the key to defeating the Dah'ren Mohran. The monster then placed it's body on the floor where it belonged. It had long green scales that came out of the back of it's neck that blended into yellow and red as they went up. Surprisingly, it had four legs for support, despite being a snake, and two teeth-like tusks coming out of it's lower jaw upwards. The scales running along it's long body were dark green, with the end of it's tail having five of the large yellow and red scales protruding out from it, and it's underbelly being brown in colour. It's most notable feature were it's red eyes with purple highlights around them, signalling it was infected with the Frenzy Virus.

However, instead of roaring like the other monsters Twilight had encountered, it stuck out it's tongue to 'smell' it's surroundings before slowly slithering around the edge of room before picking up speed and making moat of sand, preventing Twilight and Teal to escape. It finally stopped and turned to face them before glaring at them with it's piecing red eyes, striking fear into the mares, especially the lavender Unicorn.

"Nope!" Twilight shook her head "I don't do snakes! Not after the first time Pinkie Pie tried to get me into hunting monsters! We found a Remobra colony that was really pissed that we found them and they chased us until we left their habitat!"

"Twilight, snap out of it!" Twilight's teal partner shouted "Think of it as a, um... banana with legs!"

"What?!" the lavender mare shouted.

"Just do it!" Teal shot back. Sighing, Twilight tried her best to imagine that the beast in front of them was a banana with legs, as silly as that sounded. Though, it eventually did work.

"Okay, I'm good..." the purple maned mare sighed before looking at the snake wyvern for real and learning about it's species "It's a Najarala, if I recall. It's a snake wyvern with the ability to paralyze and squeeze the life out of somepony."

"Well that's-"

Before Teal managed to finish her sentence, the Najarala hissed and lunged forward at the moss green maned Pegasus, trying to bite her head off. Thankfully, she managed to whip out her dual blades with her wings and swing them at the snake monster's head, making it flip upward before facing the duo and hissing once again.

"C'mon baby, I wanna see how your weapon works!" the teal mare winked at Twilight. The lavender mare just rolled her eyes with a grin before taking out her recently upgraded insect glaive and Kinsect. Immediately, she sent her Kinsect flying at the snake, landing on it's head and taking a small nibble before flying back to Twilight and giving her an attack buff.

"Hey, nice one!" Teal praised "But let's see you try and do this!" she became enveloped in a red glow and started to attack the Najarala without thinking, but seemingly doing more damage to it. The snake wyvern hissed in pain before it decided to try and wrap the Pegasus hunter with it's body, giving her a good look at it's eyes.

"What in the..." was all she could say before Twilight jumped up and slashed the snake in the side, releasing her partner "Twi, what's up with the Najarala's eyes?"

"My guess it's infected with the Frenzy Virus" explained the lavender hunter.

"The Frenzy what?"

"I'll explain later! Try to stay focused!" she shouted. Teal Speck nodded and readied herself to engage the monster again. It gave off an enraged hiss before coiling around the two once again. However, this time Twilight wanted to see what new features on her weapon were given to her by Appleloosa's elder. She saw a new button on the hilt and, without hesitation, pressed it. The bottom of the insect glaive fired off a round of flame that, if used correctly by her calculations, could send her flying upward into the air. The lavender Unicorn grabbed onto her glaive with her hooves, pointed the hilt downward and pressed the button, sending her flying into the air and onto the Najarala's head. She took this time to stab the crap out of it with her carving knife, eventually knocking it down and making it flail on the ground, giving both Twilight and Teal a chance to attack it. After a while, Teal jumped up and forced both of her blades into the chest of the monster, letting purple blood fly and finally ending the life of the monster.

(Music stop)

"Wow, what a battle!" the teal hunter laughed "What do you think Twilight? Twilight?"

The dual blade wielder looked over to where Twilight was; in the centre of the room mourning over the absolutely destroyed plaque that was their only way of finding out how to defeat the Dah'ren Mohran. All the more reason for her to hate snakes.

"Twi, I'm sure there's another way" Teal, truly for the first time since she met the lavender pony, spoke in a reassuring and concerned tone of voice "Look, there's another room just up ahead. What do you say we check that out first before sobbing over a glass of spilled milk, okay?"

"Yeah, okay..." Twilight sighed before standing back up and following her partner into the next room. Said room was significantly smaller than the previous room, but in the centre stood a pedestal with a white potion sitting on top of it.

"You think that's the supposed sacred weapon?" Teal asked.

"Only one way to find out..." Twilight began walking forward to the vial, but Teal stopped her, turned her around to face her and kissed her on the lips. She only did this for a few seconds before pulling off.

"I know you don't have feelings for me, but I am a fillyfooler, and I'm obliged to kiss you" explained the teal hunter "Promise you won't die?"

"I-I promise..." Twilight said as she blushed as red as a cherry. She finally turned away from her partner and grabbed the potion with her magic, popped the cork off and started drinking it. After a few seconds, nothing happened.

"I don't feel any differe-" was all Twilight could get out before her eyes began glowing and she fainted onto the floor.

"TWILIGHT!!" Teal shouted as she ran over and checked her body "Oh thank goodness; she's still breathing... I wonder what that white stuff did to her..."

Author's Notes:

This one wasn't my best chapter and you could tell it was rushed in a few areas, but I think it turned out pretty well for the most part.

So, white potion? Glowing white eyes? Sound familiar to anyone?

Write in the comments below to ask what monster you want to have be seen in this story and I will put it in there without question.
