Chapter 5: Lightning Strings

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

The rest of the night was a blast for Midnight. This was his first party ever. Not only did he experience his first party, but he also realized why everyone was acting strange that day. They were planning the party for him and preparing his new house. Midnight thanked them all, but his thanks were not exactly heard as the party went on. Midnight also learned something that hard way; Pinkie Pie loves to party. She went nuts during the party. It lasted all the way till the moon was completely up. Twilight and the others offered to help clean up, but Midnight said they shouldn't. However, they helped anyway. After about an hour of cleaning, everyone said their goodbyes and left. Midnight collapsed onto his bed in slight exhaustion. For once in his life, Midnight fell asleep with a smile on his face, and tears not coming out of his eyes.

---

Midnight appeared in a completely dark area. It was pitch-black, barely capable of seeing anything. However, he seemed to be in the middle of a forest. The trees were outlined with white and the ground was slightly visible.

"Where am I?" he asked aloud.

You are not the only one who is alone…

Midnight looked around randomly, slightly confused and slightly scared.

There is yet another pony that has experienced the same pain as you. She feels alone, scared, and afraid…

A pink and green blur raced by Midnight's field of vision. Midnight ran after it with his legs and also using his wings. He landed in what seemed to be a clearing. The blur raced past Midnight in the opposite direction. Midnight continued to run and chase after it. Every time he thought he cornered it, the blur raced past him once more. Eventually, the blur raced by and entered a tree. Midnight stopped and looked at the shape of the tree. It seemed familiar to him, but Midnight couldn't place it.

Find the pony and help her…before it's too late…

---

Midnight woke up with a startle. His covers were all messy, tangling in his wings, claws, and spikes. He sat up and looked around. There was a knock on his door. Midnight tried to get the covers off but he ended up ripping them by accident. He embarrassingly tossed the damaged covers aside and walked over to the door. Using his magic, he opened the door and saw a familiar face. It was Twilight. But, the sun was in the middle of the sky at the moment.

"There you are…" she said, "I thought you would never wake up…"

Midnight rubbed the back of his head with one of his claws, "Yeah, I guess I was so used to running that I never had time to stop and rest."

Twilight laughed, "Well, you can get plenty of that around here."

Midnight left his home and closed the door behind him. He slowly walked beside Twilight as she led him to her home. Twilight's home was the library. The library also had a few spare rooms, but it was also was built inside of a large tree. As soon as Midnight walked inside, he was amazed by the amount of books. Shelves after shelves, books were piled on the large shelves. Midnight looked at each column, reading the cover's titles. He heard a slight tumble down the stairs and turned. That little dragon he met before, Spike, was lying down on the floor with several books all around him. He sat up and rubbed his head, "Uh…that's the last time I carry every book at once…" Midnight stepped up and his spike began to glow as well as the books. The opened books closed and all of them floated up around Spike. Spike seemed surprised but he got up. With Midnight's help, Spike was able to put all of the spilled books away. Spike dusted himself off and rubbed his claw against his chest, "Yep…nothing like a day's work to put some hair on your chest…"

Twilight walked over and smacked Spike's head with her hoof. "Spike…there are two things wrong with that statement" she said. "One…you're a dragon, you have no hair. Two, Midnight helped you. I believe you should thank him." Spike groaned but Midnight chuckled. It already seemed like he forgave him. "Now Spike" said Twilight, "Get a pen and paper ready. I think I need to write a letter to the Princess…"

"You mean…Princess Celestia…?" asked Midnight.

"Yes, my friends and I always send the Princess letters. That's one reason why I was here. Before I was one of her most loyal and experienced students. Then, I was sent here to advise a celebration. And after a few events and moments, I was ordered to stay here. Every now and then, I send a letter to her about what I learned about friendship."

Midnight seemed slightly confused by her explanation, but he took it. After the letter, the trio set off for Ponyville. As soon as they entered the main street, they were greeted by Pinkie Pie and Applejack. Pinkie Pie was hoping around as her usual energetic self. "Twilight, Twilight!" shouted Pinkie Pie. "You won't believe what we saw!"

Twilight rolled her eyes but answered, "Won't believe what Pinkie?" The way she said it sounded like she heard this reaction from Pinkie a lot.

"There's this new stand in town! The owner that runs it has magic unlike anything I've ever seen!"

Hearing magic immediately caught Twilight's attention. Now to Pinkie, any form of magic would be amazing to her. But if it really showed this much of a reaction, it must be very unique magic. "What kind of magic is it?" asked Midnight. His voice now had a hint of enthusiasm. Pinkie Pie hopped in the opposite direction with the rest of them on her trail. Once they got within town square, they all looked around. "That's amazing…" said Midnight as he caught sight of the stand. Twilight turned around to see her friends gathered around something beside the stand. She broke the circle, and slightly laughed at what she saw. What she saw was very small; no bigger than half of Spike's height. It looked like an eel made of wood. Its body and bottom part of its jaw was black wood. The top half of its head was white. It was glowing as it floated in the air. Twilight rolled her eyes once more.

"It's just a floating puppet…" said Twilight. "It's just a simple levitation spell."

"It's really small" said Spike as he walked up to it. It floated lower to the ground and turned towards him.

"But Twilight, its alive!" shouted Pinkie Pie.

"I know you find it a bunch of hooey, but she's right this time Twilight…" said Applejack.

Twilight looked at them like they were both nuts. "Alive?" asked Twilight, "How is that even possible?" She looked around, mainly at the booth, for the pony who is casting the spell. "A puppet can't be alive, it's not possible…"

"Stormstrike, get back here!" said a voice. "I need your help at the stall!"

The puppet suddenly turned around, causing Spike to stumble back from shock. It seemed that the puppet's eyes landed on the stall. Everyone else followed its gaze as a pony stepped out. A black stallion walked out from the stall. His mane and tail were a bright neon green, as well as the circuit-like markings along his side. The mark on his side seemed to be a marionette board with lightning bolts coming down from it. "Coming Lightning!" shouted the puppet. Twilight, Midnight, and Spike looked shocked. The puppet known as Stormstrike seemed to swim in mid-air as he went into the shop. The other walked up to the new pony and the new pony noticed them.

"Hello there ponies…" he said. "Who are you…?"

"My name is Twilight Sparkle" said Twilight. "This is my assistant Spike" as she gestured to him on the ground. "And this is Midnight." The stallion's eyes landed on Midnight, but he never reacted like others do. "My name is Applejack mister" said Applejack, "It's a pleasure to meet ya."

"Hi I'm Pinkie Pie!" Pinkie shouted causing everyone to step back. "Oh…you look neat! You look like a party I once went to! It was so techie! There were so many lights and fancy designed decorations and…" Applejack covered her mouth with her hoof before she kept rambling on. Everyone else made a nervous laugh but Lightning. Lightning looked confused but faced Twilight.

"I have two questions" he said. "One, what is she on and two, can I have some?"

Pinkie Pie randomly pulled out a bag of sugar and offered it to Lightning. He was about to accept it, but something crashed within his stall. "Sorry, but I have to go" he said. "It was nice meeting you all!" Lightning rushed back to the stall after a wave from everybody. Applejack had to leave for the farm and Pinkie Pie had to go back to Sugarcube Corner. However, Midnight managed to see Pinkie Pie pour a large amount of sugar into her mouth. Before Twilight left with Spike, she turned to Midnight. "I heard that Zecora wanted to see you" she said. "I don't know what it was about, but she sounded like she really wanted you."

Midnight thanked her and headed for Zecora's place. On the way there, he took note of the path he was taking. It looked similar to the one in his dreams. The trees bent the same way, the bushes were pushed back, and even the ground seemed the same. He finally reached Zecora's, but something hit him mentally. Zecora's hut looked like the final location in his dream. He shook it out of his head and walked into the open door. However, he crashed into someone else. He thought it was Zecora, but he saw a blur of pink and green. His vision cleared, revealing a pony with strange features. She looked at Midnight and gasped. She immediately backed up, "W-Who are y-you…?"
