Midnight's Lesson in Friendship
Chapter 6: The Oracle of Beauty
Previous Chapter Next ChapterBoth the pony and Midnight instantly backed up to the opposite ends of the hut. They were both in the same position; backs against the wall, crouched on the ground, and both had something blocking them. Midnight had his wings, and the other pony had a large feathery tail. After about a few minutes of hiding, both of the strange ponies unblocked themselves. Midnight had a better chance to look at this strange pony. It was obviously a girl, because Midnight seemed enchanted by her beauty. Her body was pink while her hooves were green. Her long mane was a brilliant mix of dark pink, green, and blue with green ears sticking out from the top. One single feather swirled out in front of her face. The pony's eyes were blue with a small pair of glasses in front of them. Her tail however, was the most distinct feature about her. The pony had a long tail of a peacock, several long green feathers each ended with an eye-like design. The area where her feather met her body was this yellow feathery growth. The mark along her side was a peacock. The two slowly stood up straight and stared at each other. Midnight wanted to take a step closer, but he was afraid. He wasn't afraid of the pony, he was afraid of her being afraid of him. The girl did have a look of fear in her eyes, but what it was towards was unknown to Midnight.
"Are…are you afraid of me…?" he asked calmly.
The girl leaned back, "Are you…scared of me…?"
Both ponies ended up in a dead silent stare down. The door opened and Zecora walked in. She appeared in the dead center of the two's eyesight. "Zecora, who is this?!" the two shouted together. Zecora laughed slightly when she heard them both speak at once she walked out of their line of sight so they could both see each other. "You two may not see, but you're both more alike than any pony" she said. "You both live in fear, sadness, and regret. But do not be scared of each other just yet. I will be back in a moment's time, but you will both realize that this meeting is a sign…"
Zecora left as shortly as she entered. Midnight was left all alone with this strange looking pony. Silence passed through the hut once more. No one could take a step closer because of the other's reaction. Eventually, Midnight decided to speak up.
"H-Hello…" he said, "M-My name is M-Midnight…W-What's yours…?"
The pony saw the way Midnight acted and sighed at the result. "You're afraid of me…just like all the others…"
Midnight's fear vanished as she said this. Her statement triggered something in his mind. Memories of his past he wished he forgotten, moments in his life where he was all alone. Midnight walked up close to the girl. Her closed eyes were starting to form tears. Gently using his claw, Midnight wiped a tear away. This startled the pony, causing her to stumble backward and run into a shelf. Some pots and other items toppled over and began to fall. The girl did nothing prepare for the impact. Midnight's spike glowed and every item falling followed suit. The girl opened one of her eyes to see each item floating harmlessly above her. He focus landed on Midnight as he concentrated to put each item back where it belonged. The girl, still flabbergasted, stared at Midnight with her faded eyes. Midnight saw her look but confused it with fear. He sighed and started to head for the door. "…w-wait…!" said the pony. Midnight stopped, half afraid and half confused. He turned his head, only to see her head rush towards his body and rub against him as a thank you. Midnight's blue face flushed red when she returned the kindness.
"…I-I'm sorry about before…" she explained. "The…last few years of my life were…hectic…"
"My life has been nothing but misery every since I was born…" replied Midnight. "I think know we should start over. My name is Midnight, and you are?"
"I'm Oracle" she replied with some confidence. "Might I ask what you were doing here?"
"I was told that Zecora wanted to see me."
Oracle gasped, "…that's…what she told me…"
Another long drawn out silence filled the hut. Both ponies now had a shocked expression on her face. But, Midnight changed and looked at her tail. "That is a very beautiful tail…" he said. "Is it…really feathers…?" Oracle moved her tail closer to Midnight. With a careful claw, he slowly stroked her tail. It was indeed a feather, same texture, same feeling. Now, Oracle seemed interested in Midnight's features.
"Are those…wings and spikes…?" she asked. Midnight nodded, getting ready for the next question. "Are they real?" Midnight stretched his wings out to their fullest extent and lowered his wing towards her. Raising a hoof, Oracle felt the rough rubbery texture of the wing. Midnight tried to not react to her touch as much, but she only felt it for a little bit. "What…happened to you…?"
The next hour or so, Midnight and Oracle explained their pasts. Midnight explained the horror and sadness of his cutie mark and the loneliness he felt. Oracle explained how she got her tail and mane. Apparently, it has here in Zecora's hut where her transformation started. She accidentally spilled something that was in Zecora's cauldron on her by accident. Whatever was inside the large pot, caused her to look like this. But this happened to her as a filly. Midnight was even more surprised when Oracle explained what others called her; a demon, a curse, an accident. Midnight understood her pain and stretched his wing over her in comfort.
"I'm just glad Zecora had a kind enough heart to forgive me" she explained. "I just wish I didn't have these stupid feathers…"
"You're making your feathers sound like a disease or curse" said Midnight. "To me, they could possibly be the most beautiful thing about you."
Oracle blushed, "My feathers are a curse…I can't go anywhere…"
"Your feathers are a gift. And I can cross through town without being yelled at. Here, let's go into town."
Midnight got up but Oracle did not. She stayed in the hut with her ears down and her attention focused on her tail. Now, without her tail, Oracle could possibly at least go out. Her mane would just be unique. But her tail really did stand out. Midnight looked around and noticed something hanging on the wall. He used his levitation magic to pull it off the rack. It seemed to be a full body cloak with a hood. Slowly, Midnight maneuvered it over Oracle's tail and fit it on her body. Once it fit, you couldn't see anything of Oracle except for the tips of her hooves and her muzzle.
"I'm still not sure about this…" she said. "What if someone sees me…?"
Midnight thought it over, and an idea came into his mind. "I think I know someone who can help."
Midnight wrote something on a piece of paper and then left Oracle out of the hut. As soon as they left, Zecora walked in. She was slightly surprised to see no one around. She saw the note left on her table. It read:
"Bringing Oracle to town had to borrow your cloak. Will return it later…
-Midnight"
Zecora smiled as she went back to organizing a new potion. As for Midnight and Oracle, the first few steps were the easiest. Oracle did not mind walking through the Everfree Forest. The light was nearly blocked from coming down through the treetops. The path was relatively clear, it had a few bushes and rocks, but it was basically clear. Everything was silent as they walked. "…Midnight…" said Oracle, breaking the silence. "There's…something I forgot to mention about me…" Midnight was curious but he let her continue. Oracle seemed sad, "Whenever I see a new pony, I sometimes get these…"
Oracle suddenly broke down and collapsed onto the ground. Midnight managed to catch her before she fell completely. He pulled the hood back, revealing Oracle's glowing eyes. She stood up straight and looked at Midnight. Her gaze scared him a little. "Be thankful to those around you that are willing to be a friend" she said in a different tone, "Because soon all of their lives will surely end."
The glow in her eyes faded, returning her faded pupils. She shook her head and rubbed it a little. She noticed Midnight's scared look and realized what happened. "I…I did it…didn't I?" she asked. Midnight was slightly scared, but confusion came onto his face. "Whenever I meet a new pony, I sometimes have a vision of them. I sometimes cannot hear what I say when I'm like that. What exactly did my vision say?"
Midnight stayed silent, with the slightly scared look stuck on his face. Oracle took this as a bad time and pulled her hood up. The moment they stepped out from the edge of the Everfree Forest, Oracle became instantly nervous. But, with Midnight at her side, she managed to move on. Everypony that passed gave Oracle a strange look, but said hello to her nonetheless. After a few hellos, Oracle began to say hello back. After a while, Midnight and Oracle reached their destination; the Carousel Boutique. The store was empty but was filled with several dressed decorated with gemstones. Oracle gazed at these as Midnight talked to Rarity.
"Hello Midnight, how may I be of service?" she asked.
"Hello Rarity" he replied. "I need your help. You know everything about beauty, right?" This comment caused Rarity to blush, something Midnight did not try to do. "I met this pony who is absolutely beautiful! But, she thinks her beauty is a curse. Maybe you can help convince her…"
"Well…since you consulted the expert of true grace and beauty…" she said, "It's the least I can do…"
Midnight rolled his eyes from her self-recognition and went back to Oracle. She still kept her hood up, which startled Rarity a little. They introduced themselves and shook hooves. "Now dear…" said Rarity, "Midnight has told me that you have beauty but find it as a curse. Now then, I would like to see what you look like."
Oracle became nervous and turned to Midnight, "You didn't mention anything about this! She'll tell everyone for sure!"
"It's alright dear, I promise not to tell anypony."
Silence ran through the shop for several minutes. "At least take off your hood" whispered Midnight. Oracle sighed and reached for her hood. As soon as she took it off, Rarity gasped. "Oh my stars darling, that mane is simply magnificent!" she gasped. Oracle was instantly surprised. "What wonderful colors! They match perfectly with the nice tone of your coat! Please tell me this is what you were talking about a curse!"
Oracle smile disappeared when she said that. "No…my mane isn't the problem…it's…my…tail…" Midnight used his magic to remove the rest of the cloak. Rarity gasped at what she saw. Oracle's peacock-like feathery tail was spread out fully. Oracle looked down in sadness, but what she didn't see was Rarity rushing over to her desk. "Oh…where is my camera?! Those feathers are the most beautiful thing I have ever seen!" Oracle was surprised by her statement, but even more surprised when she saw a flash. Rarity was almost fussing over the picture, "Those feathers would make such a wonderful design for a dress. You have true beauty my dear."
"See Oracle, you features aren't a curse, they're a gift" said Midnight.
The door opened and the pair turned. The rest of Midnight's friends were standing out there. But that wasn't everypony. Zecora was out there, as well as Lightning Strings, and Sparkplug! Everypony circled around Oracle in awe. Oracle was scared out of her mind but Midnight helped her calm down.
"That's one pretty tail you got there sugar" said Applejack.
"That tail's even cooler than mine!" shouted Rainbow Dash.
"Om my gosh! They're just like a bird's!" shouted Pinkie Pie. "There so green, and blue, and yellow. They're almost like a rainbow! Except it doesn't have the other colors. How did you get them?! And your mane is colorful too! Was your mother a bird or was your father a…"
Twilight covered her mouth, trying to silence her. Sparkplug walked to the center to get himself some attention. "I know I'm not as important as feather face over here, but I have something to say" he said. "I would like to apologize for what I did yesterday. I should not have tried practicing my lightning spells by Cloudsdale. Can you ever forgive me?"
Everypony nodded and Sparkplug let out a sigh of relief. Lightning Strings seemed content with himself at the moment and made small talk with everypony. Oracle walked up to Midnight, and kissed him on the cheek. "Thank you Midnight" she said. "Now I have some faith into returning to Ponyville."
Midnight blushed but was lead away from the group by Twilight. She explained to him that she never has written a letter to the Princess yet. So, she was wondering if he would like to. Midnight said he would be honored.
"Dear Princess Celestia" Midnight said aloud as he wrote on the paper, "Today, I have learned something about making friends. It's harder than what it seems. Ever since I came to Ponyville, all of my friends were ones that I simply had to say hello to. But today, I earned these two friends. Sometimes, showing your aggressive side isn't always a bad thing. Heck, it helped Ponyville from a storm. But, the opposite is also true. Showing kindness towards others will also not only help you, but also help them.
Sincerely,
Midnight"
