Midnight's Lesson in Friendship

Chapter 4: Sparkplug's Power Surge

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Midnight woke up to the call of a rooster. Although it was early to others, Midnight was wide awake now. He has never slept for so long on something so comfortable. He got up, stretched his legs and wings, and left the barn. Applejack was already up and preparing for the day. Midnight walked towards her as she ran about the farm. He entered the house after her, but he ran into her instead. Applejack took a while to recover but she managed. "Sorry Applejack" said Midnight.

"It's alright there Midnight…" she replied. "I'm just in a hurry because…" Applejack stopped after that and looked around nervously. Midnight was confused by her actions, but then she pushed Midnight into another room. "I forgot to show ya to my family!" she said with enthusiasm. Midnight walked after about a few minutes of being pushed. First pony he met was an old pony in a rocking chair. Her mark was an apple pie. She seemed to be asleep while rocking in her chair.

"This here is Granny Smith" said Applejack. "She here started the farm way back when. Granny Smith! Wake up!"

Granny Smith's eyes suddenly opened and she quickly turned her head in several directions. Midnight backed up slowly as Granny Smith's sight landed on him. Granny Smith smiled, "Aww…it's nice to see another pony 'round here to help out my little Applejack…" Midnight calmed down and smiled back at her. Applejack led Midnight out of the house and they encountered another pony. This one was much larger and taller than Midnight, causing him to crouch to the ground and open his wings. His wings were fully extended and covered Midnight's entire body.

"Midnight…what in the hay are you doin'?" asked Applejack. "Big Mac here wouldn't harm a fly…" Midnight slowly closed his wings and looked up. Big Mac had a friendly smile on his face. Midnight eased up and slowly stood up straight. Big Mac wore a horse collar around his neck and his mark was an apple cut in half. "Midnight, this here is Big Mac. He may be big, but he's as gentle as a butterfly. Aren't ya Big Mac?"

"Eeyup" he replied.

Midnight briefly introduced himself and helped Applejack some more. He still didn't get the hang of apple bucking; all of the apples still fell on top of him. Applejack laughed at this some more but stopped when Midnight was beginning to leave.

"W-Where are ya'll goin?" she asked.

"Can't I go into town?" he asked. "After all, I need to get used to the other ponies."

Applejack seemed like she wanted to protest but she said nothing. Midnight turned and headed to town with a confused look on his face. It wasn't that far of a walk to town, so Midnight could be back before dark. Immediately, Midnight was greeted normally. No one shouted at him, no one threw things at him, and no one even screamed and ran. If Midnight never saved Scootaloo, he probably would still be treated as a monster. But there seemed to be some caution in the air. Some ponies were sealing their windows shut and placing outside stands inside. He saw Rarity and Fluttershy, but they avoided him for some reason. It made Midnight worry, but he ignored it. A wondrous smell hit Midnight's nose and he followed it to the source in a daze. Midnight entered a building without even realizing it. He bumped into a counter and accidentally knocked over a glass display case. The cupcakes inside were now crushed and ruined. Midnight backed up but ran into someone. He turned around suddenly to see a pink pony with three cupcakes as a mark and a multi-shaded pink mane. She looked at the mess and then looked at Midnight. Midnight backed against the wall and covered himself with his wings. "Please don't hurt me! It was an accident!" he shouted.

He heard the sweeping of a broom and looked out from under his wing. The pony was sweeping the broken glass and crushed cupcake into a small pan. "Oh it's alright dear" she said. "Accidents happen…"

Midnight cautiously returned to his normal self and walked towards her, "Y-You're not s-scared of me…?"

The pony laughed slightly, "After what I have heard from you dear…I'm not afraid. Besides…it's your first time here in Ponyville. I just don't want you to be afraid anymore dear."

Midnight smiled and his horn began to glow. The broom and pan began to levitate and sweep the mess on their own. The pony backed up as the task was done for her. She turned and watched as Midnight completed the job and threw the mess away. "There you go miss" said Midnight, "Everything is all cleaned up." "Thank you dear" she replied. "I'm Mrs. Cake and I…"

They were interrupted by Pinkie Pie quickly rushing in and shutting all of the window shutters. At first Mrs. Cake was confused, but then she joined Pinkie Pie. Midnight was in a complete loss of what they were doing. But, he didn't want to interrupt them. Obviously it is very important and he didn't want to bother them. He stepped out of Sugarcube Corner and began walking somewhere else. But, everypony was still placing things inside and shutting their windows. Suddenly, the town was blasted with the sound of thunder. Midnight jumped along with everypony else outside. A lightning bolt ran through the town and struck the ground in the center of town. Midnight rubbed his eyes because he thought he saw a pony standing there. The light dimmed and revealed a unicorn. His skin was brown with tan hooves and had a green mane and tail. His mane was cut short and messy, while his tail seemed to be edged like a lightning bolt. His horn wasn't whole; it was fractured to where he only had about one to two inches of horn left. His eyes seemed to match the color of his hooves and showed no sign of the gentle sense like all of the other ponies. They weren't evil looking, but they didn't seem normal. The mark on his side was a lightning bolt.

"Good evening ponies and gentlecolts…" the unicorn said. "This evening we have a very special performance planned. I will shoot electrical discharges from my horn, and then YOU will run in the other direction. Have fun!"

Everypony began to run as the unknown unicorn shot electricity out of his fracture of a horn. Midnight ran before he even faced him. A flash of light and a crash of thunder boomed behind Midnight, causing him to run even faster. Suddenly, the unicorn from behind him appeared in front of him. Midnight tried to stop himself but he ran into the unicorn instead. Midnight quickly recovered from the crash and got a fair distance from the unicorn. A bolt of lightning shot up to the sky as the strange unicorn. He glared at Midnight, causing Midnight to nearly collapse from fear.

"Who do you think you are?!" he shouted.

Twilight and Applejack ran in beside Midnight. Midnight already felt safer around them. Twilight's horn began to sparkle but the mystery unicorn smiled. Lighting suddenly struck behind her and Twilight lost her concentration. Applejack galloped towards him with her lasso twirling. But, the unicorn simply smiled again. In a flash of light, he disappeared from sight but reappeared behind Applejack. Applejack quickly turned, only to be kicked by the guy's two back hooves. Now Midnight was mad. His claws dug into the dirt and his eyes slowly began to glow. His horn began to glow black but he quickly shook his head and all of his evil thoughts vanished. But, he still wasn't going to sit there and watch his friends get hurt. His horn glowed black again as well as the unicorn. Midnight lifted the unicorn up and prevented him from moving.

"Who are you and why are you doing this?" asked Midnight. "Can't you see your scaring the other ponies?"

He snorted and turned his head, "My name is Sparkplug freakshow. And of course I'm scaring them; I'm trying to help them. There is a…"

Sparkplug's body became surrounded in purple energy and was slammed into the ground. Twilight came up beside Midnight and glared at Sparkplug. Although Twilight had him under, Midnight's horn continued to glow. "That's enough Midnight, I'll take it from here" she said.

Sparkplug only laughed, "Yeah, take this!" His horn glowed and lightning shot out. But, the lightning swirled around in the air slowly and lazily. Everyone was surprised as the electricity slowly hit the ground a few feet away from them. Sparkplug tried to fight Twilight's spell but it was too powerful. "Let me go!" he demanded. "You don't know what's going to happen!"

Suddenly, the sky turned dark and the wind picked up. Twilight, Applejack, and Midnight all looked up. Dark thunderclouds were beginning to roll in. Rainbow Dash flew into town and landed beside them. She saw Sparkplug under Twilight's spell and she glared at him. Sparkplug smiled sheepishly, "Oh, hey…Rainbow Dash…how is the Weather Factory…?"

"Damaged no thanks to you!" she said coldly. Her friends turned their head to her for an explanation. "Thanks to our little friend, the Weather Factory keeps emitting thunderclouds. He was firing rapidly and one of his stray bolts hit our machines. That's why we told everyone to hide inside. Didn't you guys get the notice?"

Lightning struck down beside the group and rain began to pour down. The wind started to pick up, causing the rain to sting a little. The group separated as they all ran for cover. Sparkplug stayed where he was and stared up into the sky. The sun was entirely blocked out and the clouds were filled with lightning. Midnight saw Sparkplug standing there and stopped. Another lightning bolt hit the ground but this one hit Sparkplug. Sparkplug stood there, unaffected and electricity discharged off of him harmlessly. Midnight had an idea.

"Sparkplug, I think I know how you can fix this!" he told him.

"Why would I help you ponies?" he said. "It's only a thunderstorm…buildings will get destroyed and ponies might get hurt, but it will only last about a few minutes."

Midnight wasn't usually a rough pony, but something in his eyes flashed and he walked up to Sparkplug roughly. Midnight grabbed Sparkplug's neck and turned it so that their faces met. "You better listen to me you living battery" he said. This "little storm" was your fault to begin with. Ponyville could be destroyed from this storm. This isn't something you can just ignore. Now, I know you can control lightning. So, I suggest you do something to attract this storm away from Ponyville, otherwise you will not only learn a lesson from everypony that lives here, but you will also have to deal with me! So, what's going to happen?"

Sparkplug looked at Midnight with some fear. He didn't expect such behavior from a pony that ran from him. Midnight looked slightly threatening, but he sure wasn't a monster. Sparkplug looked at the black sky. Rain was pouring down in sheets and the powerful winds were causing the rain to sting. Sparkplug faced Midnight boldly, "This is my mess, and I will fix it."

Sparkplug charged with electricity as he galloped out of town. Lightning struck but they struck behind him; missing every time. The rain seemed to slowly settle and the clouds seemed to be following Sparkplug as he ran away from Ponyville. The sun soon appeared through the cloud layer as the storm moved. Twilight and the others stepped out from cover as the skies became clear. Midnight smiled as everypony else were now able to come outside. Midnight was about to walk back to the farm but Pinkie Pie popped up in front of him.

"Hey, where are you going?!" she said enthusiastically. "You're going to miss the party!"

"Party…" said Midnight, "What's a…party?"

Everyone gasped, but Pinkie Pie was the one most surprised. "Oh my gosh, you've never been to a party?!" she rambled on. "Well, it kinda makes sense since you were never invited to one because of your looks. But that's really no excuse to even get an invitation. What a bunch of jerks. They were probably the same jerks that bullied you when you were little. They probably got an invitation and you didn't because…"

Applejack covered her mouth, but Pinkie Pie kept speaking. Her voice was muffled as she kept talking past the hoof blocking her mouth. Twilight rolled her eyes but smiled. She told Midnight to follow her and the others. Pinkie Pie finally stopped talking and walked beside the others. Midnight was not only getting a better view of the rest of Ponyville, but he was also excited to see this "party." Soon, they walked along a dirt path that led to a building. It was strange because this building seemed to be built within a large rock. Although, it was more natural, so it seemed like a small hill. What was the actual building it was black and blue. One door and one window were visible. Midnight was curious to see whose home this was. He opened the door with his magic and walked in. Immediately, Midnight gasped in disbelief. The entire ceiling looked like the clear sky at night. There was a wooden table, cabinet, and bed arranged perfectly against the walls. Midnight wished he lived here, it would be perfect.

"Do you like it?" asked Twilight.

"It's amazing…" said Twilight. "Who lives here?"

"I believe y'all find the answer right over there…" said Applejack.

Midnight turned to where she was pointing to and walked over. There was a scroll on the bed nicely rolled and tightly kept. Using his magic, Midnight levitated it and flattened the scroll. He began to read,

"Dear Midnight,

We all know you haven't been in Ponyville for long. But, we all decided to give you something to show you our true friendship. We decided the best way to show you is by giving you something you have never had, a home. So please enjoy your new home that we prepared for you and have a wonderful time here in Ponyville.

Signed…"

Midnight didn't finish reading the letter because of two reasons. One, was because he was too shocked to continue reading. The second reason was that everyone behind him shouted "Surprise!" Midnight was basically in tears when he returned to the group. Everyone thought something was wrong, but Midnight raised his head a smiled, "Thank you…my friends…"
