Chapter 3: The First Day
Previous Chapter Next Chapter“So let me get this straight.” Matthias stated taking the bottle of soda away from his mouth. “There are three types of these ponies.”
“Four if you count the princesses.” Mike stated.
“So my roommate is a… unicorn.” Matthias stated in disbelief.
“If she zapped you out of your room then yeah, I’d imagine she is. She is a ‘she’ right?”
“Judging by the voice and how angry she was when I got into her sock drawer, I’d say it’s safe to assume so.”
“Wait. That’s why she’s mad at you?”
“Yeah, but I was just curious.” Matthias defended.
Mike immediately began laughing uncontrollably gaining some weird looks from those around him. “Geese I’d hate to see what you would do if you were creeping on her.”
“Ha, ha, ha fuck you.” Matthias stated rolling his eyes. “And what about you huh, what are your roommates like?”
“Well one’s a neat freak the other is a party animal.” Mike began. “Haven’t met the others.”
“Lucky you.”
“Come on man. This is going to be a long year if you start it off like this.”
“Well then Jimmnie Cricket, what do I do next?”
“Apologize, it’s not rocket science.”
“Oh yea, ‘hey, so I’m sorry about invading your personal belongings, perhaps we can kiss and make up and become the best of friends.’” Matthias stated rolling his eyes.
“Good start, but I think your moving a little fast, kissing usually happens on the second date.”
“Dude shut up. I still hate the fact I’m going here but the last thing I need is to make an enemy of my roommate who I only just met on the first day.” He explained. “Besides, kissing a pony…really?”
“Hey come on man, I’m just fucking with you.” Mike stated slapping Matthias on the back.
“Whatever. The point is that she thinks I’m a creep and the chances of me getting back into that room are not all that great at the moment.”
“Well at least the hallways are carpeted.” Mike joked earning yet another hairy eye from Matthias. “Okay, okay I’ll let you crash on the couch if push comes to shove. But don’t think you’re going to be my new roommate, you have to go back into that room sometime.”
“Deal.” Matthias stated with a nod relaxing back in the cafeteria chair.
Matthias stood outside of the pure white door with his room numbers the color of gold. Several times he went to knock but fell short before his fist hit the wood. He had no idea what to say, how to look her in the eye and tell her he was sorry; he was never good at that sort of thing, and when push came to shove he would always avoid pissing people off so he would never have to apologize.
Taking a final breath of courage Matthias raised his hand again, when suddenly; the door opened just before his fist collided. Having being used to seeing humans Matthias was stunned at first; no one was there.
“Down here.” A familiar female voice said, obviously annoyed.
Looking down Matthias saw the same angry pony as before looking up at him with the same annoyed expression that cut into Matthias soul. Now that she wasn’t angry with him took time to look at her.
Roughly the height of his waist, the unicorn pony had a long purple mane with a single stand of pink standing out as well as a small purple horn coming from her head. A long tail similar to the color of her mane coming from her flanks (which had a mark similar to the one on her bed spread on either side.) Matthias had to admit; looking at her now there was some sort of…admirable characteristics about her.
“Well?” she said again getting Matthias’ attention back on track.
Matthias met her gaze looking into her unforgiving purple eyes. “Listen...” He started “I’m not… great at this whole… apologizing business.” He scratched the back of his head nervously avoiding her gaze completely. “So I guess what I’m trying to say is…”
The unicorn let out a light chuckle making Matthias turn his gaze back to the small pony. “We both did something we’re not proud of. I apologize for yelling at you and teleporting you out of the room; if I were you I would be curious about meeting a new species as well.” The unicorn stated. “My name is Twilight Sparkle, I am pleased to make your acquaintance, and judging by the only human name on the list you must be Matthias, am I right?”
Matthias nodded as the unicorn stood aside and let him in the room. Different from the last time he once silent dorm room was bustling with sound. All around electronics were turned on from the TV, to a stereo in the other room with the bass turned up to make the room shake.
“These walls have to be thick to block out that bass” Matthias said aloud.
“Or you have a magic sound barrier to limit it to this room.” Twilight stated with a smile. “Girls we have company!”
Suddenly the music stopped, the game playing on the TV paused and whatever activity in the room suddenly stopped and all attention focused on him. Hopping off the couch Matthias saw two ponies Twilights size come into view. One was all white with a dark electric blue mane with a single light blue steak amongst the mane and tail with a brilliant white horn sticking out from atop its head. The pony also wore a large pair of purple sunglasses in front of its eyes preventing Matthias from seeing her eye color. Matthias looked towards the white mare’s flanks curiously finding a single black eighth note on either side “That mark must be different for each of them.”Matthias thought to himself turning to face the other pony.
The other pony was entirely different from the others. While this one was a single solid color like Twilight; cyan blue, this mare had wings coming from the her sides folded neatly to where the ends pointed towards her flanks where a rainbow lightning bolt stood against the blue fur. Her mane made her stand out as well; where Twilights and the other white mares were like a two tone blend, this one was literally every color of the rainbow.
“Matthias, may I introduce you to our dorm mates; Vinyl Scratch, and Rainbow Dash.” Twilight stated gesturing towards the white mare and then the other.
“So you’re the one who broke into Twi’s sock drawer huh?” The white mare stated while chuckling. “I’m going to go out on a limb and say that you have no idea why ponies wear socks do you?”
“I was kind of wondering yeah.” Matthias admitted earning a laugh from the white and cyan mare.
“I think I’m going to like you Matthias.” She stated reaching out her hoof as if to shake.
Matthias knelt down and began reaching out to shake but fell short not knowing the proper edicate to go about shaking it merely stood there for a moment dumbstruck.
“You hoof bump it dude.” Rainbow stated walking over and bumping her hoof against Matthias unsuspecting hand popping several joints in the limp fingers. “It’s not that hard.”
Matthias clenched his fist and slowly reached out until it bumped against Vinyl’s waiting hoof, and then to Rainbow who had been holding hers up to do the same.
“See. Like I said it’s not that hard.” Rainbow stated with a smile.
Matthias smiled back still fairly uneasy about the whole ordeal. Suddenly the front door open and a loud voice carrying an unmistakable southern accent came through the door.
“I tell you Twi, Shy is as un-easy as a colt in matin’ season.” Suddenly the voice fell short and a sudden “Oh” came from behind.
Turning around Matthias saw yet another pony, this time orange with no wings or horn, it literally was just a pony. However what it lacked in extra appendages it made up for in physique, her muscles were toned and way more muscular than any of the ponies Matthias had seen thus far. Looking to her flanks he saw three single red apples roughly the same color as the ties she had in her blond tail and mane which was under an old looking Stenson hat atop her head. Her emerald green eyes were fixated on Matthias almost as if she was hesitant to approach him her face showing obvious signs of being un-sure of the whole ordeal, even behind the freckles on her face.
“Applejack, this is Matthias. Matthias, Applejack.” Twilight stated.
“How do you do.” Matthias stated.
“Howdy.” Applejack greeted. “So you’re the human that’s rooming with Twi?”
Matthias gulped fearing that out of all the ponies in the ponies in the room this one probably could ‘literally kick his ass’.
“Yeah.” Matthias said avoiding her gaze.
Applejack slowly approached him getting back into his view. Seeing he was slightly nervous of her face straightened up and a small grin appeared on her face. “Easy there partner, jus’ never talked to one of y’all before.” She stated.
“Applejack, you said something was wrong with Fluttershy?” Twilight asked. “
“Just nervous is all.” Applejack stated. “Somethin’ about leaving Angel behind or somethin’ like that.”
“Who is Fluttershy?” Matthias asked.
“She’s my roommate.” Applejack stated. “Lives up to her name you might say.”
“That’s Fluttershy for you.” Rainbow sated with a laugh returning to the sofa and un-pausing her game making Vinyl scrabble back next to her and pick up her controller in her hooves restarting the music with her horn making the bass echo through the room again.
“Dang it Rainbow you cheater!” Vinyl complained as her character was shot to death on screen, making Rainbow laugh.
Matthias shook his head looking at each of his new dorm mates as they talked amongst themselves. Although he still wasn’t used to the whole idea of being roomed with ponies; he had to admit, it wasn’t at all like he thought. At first he pictured just your generic dwarf horse; unable to communicate well and completely oblivious to the occurrences around it. But after meeting Twilight and the others, he was happily proven wrong, and he was starting to get used to the idea of sharing the room with this new species… even if they were all mares.
Twilight wrote slowly in her black leather journal looking at Matthias every so often to see the humans sleeping behavior taking note of every little movement he made whilst sleeping. The human exhibited very curious behaviors much like a ponies but at the same time very different in nature. Every so often he would let out a relaxed groan as he would move again, getting into another position before settling back down and wrapping himself in the blue sheets.
The Human exhibits very similar sleeping behaviors similar to a pony, almost a mirror image in the way it presents itself during the first night. However due to lack of fur it must cover itself in order to keep warm yet takes the top half of his clothing off to gain more comfort. The human’s bed is also completely different as well, instead of one simple light sheet he has put on three, the sheet, a blanket and the comforter.
Matthias was an interesting specimen of a human, at first Twilight didn’t know what to think of him at first. Although their first meeting wasn’t exactly had she had planned, she couldn’t blame him for being curious… I mean she was curious about him as well. She turned towards him again, looking at his bare upper body that wasn’t covered by the sheet, taking note of the completely different colored skin alien to her own. A lazy arm hung off the bead dangling from the side of the bed with his fingers inches from the ground almost grazing the red carpeted floor. Twilight took extra notice of his hand; from where she was she could see five individual fingers coming from the muscular palm. She had read what she could about the appendage from the books the princess had gotten for her, but seeing it now was completely different than she would have imagined… she had to get a closer look…just for a moment.
Getting up from her chair Twilight crept over to Matthias’ bed slowly leaning in and looking at the skin of his hand as well as the muscles of his arm. She inched closer almost touching the hand with her snout, looking at the nails and other curious marking she had missed before. She looked towards Matthias who looked to be still asleep before touching the hand briefly with her snout wanting to know the feeling of his skin, rubbing along the muscular palm. She had to admit, skin was a lot softer than she’d imagine. Matthias let out a tired groan before lifting his arm away from Twilight and turned over to face the wall with his bare back to Twilight, who looked on in amazement, and she thought the human hand was fascinating. Seeing his back she could see individual bumps along his spine just there for the counting.
Putting her front hooves up on the bed she reached up with her muzzle and put it against the first one behind his neck and then sliding down slowly counting as she went. “1…2…3…” A muffled groan came from Matthias as his head looked over his shoulder, looking to Twilight with tired eyes.
“Twilight. What are you doing?” he asked, his voice groggy and hardly understandable.
Twilight instantly blushed realizing the situation she was in instantly jumping off the bed. “Nothing!” she stated avoiding his gaze as he sat on the edge of the bed rubbing one of his eyes with his fingers before turning towards the clock.
“Twilight, it’s two in the morning. I know we don’t have class tomorrow but it’s still late.” Matthias stated. “What were you doing anyway?”
“I… was… uh…” She started trying to think of an excuse as to why she was basically feeling Matthias up. Coming up with nothing, she let out a sigh. “I was examining your skeletal structure, I was looking at your hand but then you turned over and put your back to me… and so I worked with that.”
“Well ok then.” Matthias stated. “That’s either the truth, or the absolute worst pick-up line I’ve ever heard a girl…mare use.” Twilights blush intensified making Matthias grin slightly. “Get some rest Twilight, we’ll talk more tomorrow about my…’skeletal structure’.”
Laying down again Matthias covered himself completely before almost instantly going to sleep again leaving Twilight just standing there looking at his figure underneath the covers. Looking to her work desk she used her magic to turn off her lamp, filling the room with darkness as she walked to her bed and pulled back the purple covers. She looked over to Matthias one last time before hopping up into her own bed letting her mind wander as she closed her eyes attempting to fall asleep.
“Did he really think I was hitting on him or something?” She mused to herself. “I mean really, a human and a pony. A relationship like that would never work…would it?”
