Chapter 2: How Does One Start Off In A Cross Species College?
Previous Chapter Next Chapter“Matthias, Matthias honey we’re here.” Matthias’ mom said shaking him a little by his shoulder, waking him from his light slumber.
Matthias raised his head to look out the window of the now parked car, taking note of the lush green field he had seen in the brochure, as well as the large tan buildings surrounding it.
“Why not go explore a bit? I’ll go take care of administration and check-in and text you when I’m ready to meet you at your dorm.” Matthias’ mom stated hopping out of the black sedan.
Slowly Matthias exited the vehicle as well slamming the door behind him as he trudged towards the field taking note of all the people talking all around amongst themselves. “Strange.” Matthias mused. “For a college that mixes with ponies, where are all the ponies?” Shrugging it off as a gift from God (of sorts) he made his way to a solitary hill with a single tree separated from all the others, standing alone and providing an ideal place to sit in the shade. Scanning the area once more Matthias sat down under the shade of the tree leaning against the bark as he looked up at the clear blue sky. “This sucks.” He said aloud to no one in particular.
“Tell me about it.” Another voice came from behind.
Turning around Matthias saw a boy roughly his age slowly approaching the tree, his hands shoved into the pockets of his blue jeans. His long black hair flowing faintly with the light breeze as he starred down to Matthias with his green eyes.
“Let me guess, parents made you come here?” he asked.
Matthias nodded turning away from the boy as he stared back up to the sky.
“Mind if I join you?” Again Matthias nodded allowing him to sit down. “I’m Mike by the way.”
“Matthias, are you new here too?”
“Yes sir, first day. What are you here for?”
“Drama. What about you?”
“ Mechanics, not to overly thrilled about it though.”
“Why?”
“I have a pony for a teacher, probably a class filled with them too.”
“Are you against this too?”
“More or less, in all honesty it’s just another thing I’m going to have to get used to.” Mike stated with a sigh. “What about you, you happy about this whole thing?”
Matthias shook his head. “Not whatsoever. Where are they anyway? I haven’t seen any of them yet.”
“In an assembly, they got here a day or two before we did so they’re going through orientation and stuff.” Mike explained getting up from his seat and dusting himself off. “Well Matthias, it was nice meeting you, guess I’ll see you around?”
“For sure.” Matthias stated with a friendly nod watching as Mike began to walk off. Suddenly his phone began ringing in his pocket; it was a text from his mom. “Hey start heading to the East Dorms, second floor room 234.” Then it hit him; he had no idea where anything was on campus. “Hey Mike!” Matthias called running to catch up to him making him stop dead in his tracks.
“What’s up?”
“Do you know where the East dorms are? I have no idea where anything is…”
“Sure, follow me. I’m rooming there too; room 235.”
“I guess we’re neighbors then.” Matthias joked.
Slowly the duo made their way to one of the many buildings on the other side of the courtyard, ironically marked “East Residence Hall” in bright gold letters above the staircase. As they entered the building Matthias could see the almost castle like feel to the lobby alone. It almost reminded him of a mansion with its marble floors and columns. Several paintings covered the walls varying in size; some showing a detailed picture of the two headmasters of the school; one being human the other being an old looking Aqua colored pony standing at his side with an unmistakable grin behind his bushy white mustache, a small gold plate screwed onto the bottom of the frame which read “Headmaster’s William’s and Open Book.”
“Matthias.” His mother called from across the room where she stood at the reception counter.
“That’s my cue; I’ll catch up with you later then.” Matthias stated as Mike began walking up the marble staircase just to the right of the desk.
“See ya Matt.” Mike stated before disappearing from view.
“New friend honey?” Matthias’ mother asked. He nodded. “Well that’s good. Your room’s up on the second floor, why don’t you start heading up there while I register you. Here is your room key. We’ll worry about your bags a little later.”
Following his mothers orders, Matthias went up the large marble staircase up to the second floor going through another door and entering a large hallway well lit and almost welcoming with its ruby red carpet stretching the entire length of the hallway. Looking to a sign he began making his way towards his room going down the left of the hallway and counting each of the door numbers until he reached his; room 234 which was at the very end of the hallway next to yet another staircase not too far away. Sliding the key into the door, Matthias took a final breath of courage before pushing the door open and walking into the room.
The room itself was extremely large, holding two couches and a love seat near the middle with a large flat screen up against the wall on a stand which held several gaming systems inside. To his immediate right there was a large black refrigerator along with a matching electric stove backed up to the wall with a countertop not but a step away, a small room which looked like a pantry at the end of the tiled floor. There were three other doors spread across the room which Matthias guessed to be his roommates; one to the back of the room by a window, and the others on the right and left of the room, each was closed and probably locked which made Matthias wonder if his roommates were ponies or human. Judging by the TV he would at least have one human roommate he could talk to.
Suddenly the door opened behind him and Matthias’ mother stepped through carrying some of his smaller bags, a blue sheet in her hands. “Here Matthias.” She stated handing him the sheet as well as yet another set of keys. “The sheet has your room, and dorm mates names on it, and the key’s are to get into your room, the other is one is a spare in case you lose it.”
Taking the sheet Matthias began to look over the sheet finding his name at the top just over another. “Rainbow Dash, what kind of name is that?” he mused to himself before moving on down the list. “Twilight Sparkle, Fluttershy, Applejack, Vinyl Scratch, you’ve got to be kidding me, these aren’t names there some sick joke or something.”
“Now your roommate’s have already moved in so you’re all that’s left. Help me get your things from downstairs and we can get you all set up.” Matthias’ mom stated putting his bag down on the sofa.
Matthias grunted as he dropped the last of his bags on his bare bed. His mom had left after a drawn out goodbye leaving Matthias alone in this hell-hole they called “A School”. Matthias wanted to just get out of there as soon as possible before his roommate came, he didn’t want to deal with whatever was about to share his room with him.
“Look on the bright side Matthias, at least its tidy.”
It was true; the bed was neatly made covered in a lavender bed spread with some sort of pink star sewed into the comforter. While the rest of its side of the room was as neat as the bed, books on the desk were upright and put evenly on the shelf. In truth wherever you looked it was in perfect order making Matthias side look worse than it actually was.
Slowly he unzipped the first of his bags and pulled out the first set of his clothes before walking over to one of the dressers and pulling out the drawer to set them inside. Slowly Matthias looked to the other dresser on the other side of the room. “What exactly might a pony need a dresser for?” he thought to himself. Looking towards the door once he slowly walked over and pulled out the top drawer, revealing nothing but the wood it was made out of. “Maybe it’s not tall enough to put anything up here.” Moving on down he pulled out the second drawer, again there was nothing. “Two drawers down.” He stated preparing to pull the next drawer out. “Two to go.” Slowly he pulled out the oak drawer and peered inside at the contents.
Inside were several rows of what looked like socks stacked in even levels and divided by color; and while the primary color of them all was purple there was also several other various colors spread out as well. “Apparently ponies wear socks.” Matthias stated taking a single purple sock from the drawer and holding it front of his face.
“What are you doing!?” a voice said from behind. Immediately Matthias turned to see a small purple horse like figure standing in the door way. It’s face stricken with anger while its cheeks were slightly blushing. He turned to the single sock before looking at the purple horse again.
“Nothing!” he stated dropping the sock back into the drawer and slamming it closed. The small horse scowled at Matthias before a nearly blinding light emitted from the small horn protruding from its head.
“Get out!” it yelled before suddenly Matthias surrounded in a light purple aura and in the blink of an eye he was zapped into the hallway landing hard on his ass outside the door.
Matthias was stunned for a moment examining his surroundings. “What the hell was that?” Matthias stated before getting up and dusting himself off.
“Making friends with your roommate I see.” A familiar voice said from behind. Turning around Matthias immediately saw Mike standing in the doorway across the hall from his room leaning against the door frame with his arms crossed over his chest.
“You could say that.” Matthias said jiggling the doorknob which was now locked. “Shit. My key’s are in there.”
“Locked out?” Mike asked chuckling slightly.
“More like zapped out. I’m still not sure what happened.”
“Magic probably.” Mike stated
“Okay what!?” Matthias stated in disbelief.
“You don’t know?”
“Know what?”
“Come with me. I’ll explain it on the way.”
