Adagio Dazzle stared up at the sign, hanging above the salon. Breezy Beauty, was the name of the place. She had never stepped into this salon before, but as desperate as she was, she was gonna risk it. Her hair was growing out of control, and she needed someone to help cut it.
Walking inside, she could see the place looked like any usual salon/barbershop. Plenty of sinks, mirrors, hair supplies, the place had everything. Including a checkered style of floor, a small fountain with plants growing on the top and some water pumping. Everything on the desk had been neatly organized, didn't look like a clutter or a mess. And on the desk, she could see a small personal picture which seemed rather odd at first. Her eyes squinted and then she looked again.
The picture showed two kids, a boy and a girl. One had yellow skin with pink hair, with a very nasty look on her face. The other was a little boy; much younger than the girl, and with turquoise skin and blond hair. She tilted her head, and just shrugged. Thankfully in a nick of time, the one person on duty came out of the bathroom, approaching the front desk.
"So sorry to keep you waiting, Missy. I wanted to freshen myself up before I dare set my hands into your beautiful hair," a boy with a flamboyant tone of voice said.
To a surprise, the person who came to the desk wasn't who she had expected. He looked like a more grownup looking version of the little boy in that photograph. Clean face, brushed back hair, dressed nice and neatly, with an apron on. Very professional looking, he was.
"You would be my 11:00, appointment then," The boy said, looking down at the schedule. "Adagio Dazzle?"
Adagio nodded. "That would be me."
The boy smiled. "Hey, I know you. You're one of the Dazzlings, aren't you?"
Adagio blinked. "Yes, indeed I am. How do you know?"
"My sister keeps on ranting about her defeat from you guys. But hearing all of that just makes me happy that someone was there to stop her."
Adagio listened closely. And then, it hit her like an anvil. The picture, his look, a ranting sister? Suddenly it all made sense! Sort of.
"Wait a minute... you're Fluttershy's brother!"
"Yes I am. My name is Zephyr, Zephyr Breeze," he opened his hand to shake hers.
Adagio smiled. Very gentleman-like of him. Kindly, she shook his hand back.
"Very nice to make your acquaintance, Zephyr."
"And to you too, Miss Dazzle. So please, have a seat, and we can get started."
Adagio plunked herself down in the salon chair, and allowed Zephyr to put the cover tarp around her body to collect all that hair that would be cut.
"So tell me, what are we doing today?" Zephyr asked.
"Well, I'm afraid I have a lot of ends back here that are growing out of control. I swear, every time I look at myself I feel like I'm wearing a rat's nest," Adagio shivered.
"Mmm, I see. Well I can honestly say your hair is not at all a rat's nest. It only needs some some grooming and cutting, that's all."
"Just do what you have to do," Adagio cringed, looking at herself.
As Zephyr started to spray some water onto Adagio's hair, he spoke.
"Anyways... oh, right! I know this seems rather awkward, but I personally want to say thank you for saving our world."
Adagio chuckled. "What?"
"You, your sisters, and those friends of yours saved the planet. If it wasn't for you nine, we would be in eternal slavery right now, and that is not a life I wish to live."
Adagio nodded, agreeing with him. "I suppose that's true. But wait, hold on, so your sister told you everything that happened?"
"Sort of. She tried to explain everything, saying that Sunset Shimmer had used her for her own personal gain and how she and those other girls wished they could have taken her down when they had the chance. I tried to warn Fluttershy, but Sunset had already put her plan into motion," Zephyr said, starting to make a few cuts into the ends of Adagio hair that she wanted removed. "Oh, and don't get me started on Rainbow Dash..."
"So, you don't have a crush on her?"
"No, I don't. That girl had dug deep into Sunset's plans, and at that point, I just didn't have any feelings for her anymore. Not to sound disrespectful, of course."
"No, of course," Adagio said. "You still love your sister, right?"
"With all of my heart," Zephyr nodded, with a sincere look.
"Well that's good," Adagio said, sighing in relief, and a mixture of disappointment.
"Hey, what's wrong?"
Adagio sighed. "I don't know, its just... I guess I feel a little on edge. I mean they're down, yes but... I don't know. I've been trying to find means to raise money to pay for the damages done to our school, but I haven't found any means of doing so! There are barely any job openings here in Canterlot that can help me or my sister!"
She slumped a little in her seat, a visible frown on her face and quivering eyes. "Sometimes I swear, I just want to throw myself into a hot bath and cry..."
"Oh, no..." Zephyr sympathized, patting her shoulders. "You're not giving up just yet, are you?"
"Well, I don't know what to do! I know its probably not my responsibility to fix the damages but... I don't know. I just... I just want to help fix it all."
Zephyr smiled, looking in the mirror with a friendly face. "You have a good heart, Adagio. But hey, if you're looking for some money, I did find something that may be of some help."
"Yeah?"
"I was checking the daily news just this morning, and I found a studio over in Hollywood that is in need of some assistants for an entire week. Very good pay, I must add."
"Really? What's the studio?"
"Hmm, if I recall, I believe it may be Hasbro Studios. The people there are working on a Daring Do adaptation. Looking for some people to help assist with the props, sound design, costumes, you name it."
Adagio beamed. "Zephyr, you're a life saver! What's your secret?" She asked, wiggling her eyebrows.
Zephyr only chuckled. "I just need to know the right advice for the right kind of situation."
"I like it!"
Adagio and Zephyr looked into the mirror, gazing at the reflection.
"And I like where this is going!"
"Oh, trust me, you have the beauty for it!"
After Adagio took her leave, Zephyr continued to keep the place tidy, keep it running as usual. And soon enough, a new customer came by.
"So, Miss Blaze, what are we looking to do today?" Zephyr asked.
Aria slumped in her chair with a blank face. "Um... well... I guess I just wanted to shorten some of my hair a bit so it wouldn't get stuck in any gears or cranks and such."
"No problem, lets take a look!"
As Zephyr went to work, cutting some of her hair, he noticed the visible grouch on Aria's face.
"Hey, what's the matter? Is something wrong?"
"I guess..."
"Well, hey, if you want, you can tell me. I'll listen."
"I don't know... I'm not sure how much help you'll actually be," Aria groaned.
"Why not? Try me."
"Alright, look... My sister's started a new relationship and I've been getting kinda... jealous. She has a nice girlfriend, and here I am with no one! I'd like to date someone but... ugh, I scare away everyone I talk to! All because of my grumpiness! Sometimes, I swear, no one ever wants to be near me because they're scared of me..."
"I wouldn't think they're scared of you, Aria," Zephyr replied, applying some more hairspray.
"Really?"
"You're talking to me, aren't you?"
Aria nodded, shrugging. "I suppose I am."
"Then you can't scare someone away. But I suppose if I can, I'm trying to understand what your overall issue is."
Aria sighed. "I want to start dating but... I don't know if I have to change everything that I am in order to get a date, or if I'm just going to be alone for the rest of my life..."
"Now, now, listen. You should not, should not, change who you are. You should be happy being the girl that you are. If you want to change some things to try and find a man... or woman, I won't judge, then that's okay. Sometimes we change ourselves to make the significant other happy."
Aria smiled. "That... actually is pretty good advice. How do you know?"
Zephyr smiled back. "Girl, its just a thing I learned to do. Helps pass the time during the appointments, and it allows me provide any advice I can offer."
"Oh. Well, thanks!"
Aria looked back at the mirror, seeing the final results.
"And thank you for the haircut."
"Oh, its my pleasure," Zephyr nodded.
"Sometimes, I swear, I wish I wasn't so... stupid!" Sonata cried.
Zephyr frowned, patting her shoulder as she helped try to make her hair a lot more lively.
"Let it out... let it all out..."
Sonata whimpered. "I mean... oh, I know I'm really naive but sometimes I just wish I wasn't! I'm too trusting, and then that's how we were nearly hanged, set on fire, and held hostage by the worst German man ever!"
Zephyr froze. He took a moment or too, trying to take in what had been said.
"Well... okay then. I'm not much of an expert on this kind of situation, but the best thing I can say is you can't shut yourself out from everyone around you. You'll run into a few bad seeds here and there, but its a part of life. The best you can do is to keep on pushing and don't let anything take you down."
Sonata could only nod, and give a friendly smile back.
"Thanks."
The very next day...
"So what seems to be the issue today?"
Trixie frowned, feeling the shampoo running through her hair.
"I don't know... I guess I'm feeling like... I'm nothing."
"Hey now, don't say that. You're not nothing. Talk to me, what's going on?" Zephyr said, assisting in the hair washing.
"I guess... I don't know. I picked a place for me and my girlfriend to go to tonight, and its a dancing kind of restaurant. Only problem is I can't dance, and I'm afraid of being out there in front of those people!" Trixie cried.
"I see. Well, let me ask this, does your girlfriend know you're anxious?"
"She always does. But, I want to help build up my self-confidence. I want to show her I'm not afraid to give her a great time but... at the same time, I'm scared of what she'll think if she knows I can't dance."
"Well, let me ask you this, Trixie," Zephyr said, brushing some of the hair. "Does Adagio love you?"
"Yeah, she does. But I... I don't want to disappoint her."
"Well, luckily for you, this problem is an easy one. Tell her exactly what you told me."
"What?" Trixie blanked.
"Just tell her how you feel, and I'm sure she'll help you. Maybe even a little proud of you for trying to be a little more bold. Relationships are like... well, plants. They'll grow over time, if you talk about these certain things."
A small smile came onto Trixie's face, with genuine content and appreciation.
"I suppose I could try talking to her about it."
"Exactly. Tell her how you feel. I can guarantee, just tell her how you feel, and I'm sure you two can make a great night!
"I have problems..." Bon Bon whimpered.
"Talk to me, what's wrong?" Zephyr said.
Bon Bon sighed, letting her head lay back so she could get her hair washed.
"I... I have a lot of anger issues that unfortunately remain resolved. Specifically with people, irritation, patience... a lot of other things."
"I see, I see. Well, if you want, I do have a few possible techniques for how you can handle some of them."
"What's that?" Bon Bon asked, her eyes looking up to Zephyr.
"Well, one thing that you may want to try is a few breathing exercises. Whenever I'm stressed out or really upset, I like to take a few deep breaths to try and calm down. Always better to talk and express yourself when you're calm."
Bon Bon stopped, her eyes moving around as she thought. "Hmm... I could give that a try."
"Always best to remain calm should you have any issues that you need to address."
"So what's the style we're going for?" Zephyr asked, looking at Amethyst's face in the reflection.
"Well, I can't exactly wear dated clothing everywhere I go so... Any chance you can make my hair stick up like a mullet?"
"I believe I can," Zephyr replied, getting some hair gel. "So, lets get started."
As he started to put the gel into her hair, he spoke. "So, how are things with you and your father going? Last time I heard, you finally reconciled and made things up?"
"Yeah, we have. Although..."
"Although, what?" Zephyr asked.
"I don't know... I guess I kinda wish I didn't run away... I scared him really bad and," Amethyst sighed in between, filled with shame and disappointment, "I guess I wish I could undo what I had done."
Zephyr nodded. "Well your father still loves you, doesn't he?"
"He does."
Zephyr smiled. "Then I think you're okay. We cannot change the past, but the best we can do is keep looking forward to the future, and strive to make ourselves better. To move past our mistakes, and to make new people."
The last smudge of gel was added, and Zephyr finished spiking up all of her hair. "Okay, its done! What do you think?"
Amethyst looked back in the mirror, seeing the final result with a grin.
"Oh yeah, the 80s will never die!"
"A little scary when you say it like that..." Zephyr said, rubbing the back of his head.
Zephyr was finishing the clean up of the back of Octavia's hair, hanging below her head just under her mohawk.
"Alright, we're almost done back here..."
Octavia sighed with a little discontent. "Thank you, mate. The back's been bothering me for weeks without end."
"You don't sound very happy. Is something bothering you?"
Octavia nodded a little bit. "Do you think I made the right choice, picking this style of hair?"
"Well, its not my place to judge people's taste in hairstyles, but I think you should be happy with the style that you want. Why do you ask?"
"Well, this mohawk that you're seeing right now... that was the last straw before my father officially went nuts. He was so upset because I wasn't the 'prim and proper' lady he wanted me to be. Oy... sometimes I swear, I'm glad he's away in prison where he belongs. Blasted man..."
To say Zephyr was a little disturbed at what the British rocker was telling her would be an understatement. Although he was more confused than he was disturbed.
"So if I understand correctly..."
Octavia groaned. "My father is an absolute, pretentious pile of scrap! Its one thing if he's trying to protect me, but all he's done is drive my friends away from me, and drive us further apart. I'm just thankful my mother isn't as daft."
Zephyr's only idea of any way to respond was with just a simple nod. "I see..."
Octavia felt her cheeks heat up a bit, a bashful of embarrassment. "I'm probably the worst client you've had, aren't I?"
"No, no, no, you are not. Don't you worry about a thing. Its normal to vent about your frustrations. Heck to be honest, every customer that I tend to always lets out many of unresolved frustrations. Nothing to be worried about."
Octavia smiled. "Well, thank you."
"No problem. I gotta say though, I do dig your mohawk. Brings out the rockstar in you."
Octavia chuckled. "Well aren't you a charmer?"
"I just know what to say in the right kind of situation," Zephyr shrugged.
"So just a simple trim for you today, Miss Heartstrings?"
Lyra nodded. "Yes please."
"Then lets get started."
Zephyr immediately started to apply some hairspray, getting Lyra's hair damp enough for him to begin the cuts.
"Alright, so what's new with you? Any new exciting adventures that await you, or any problems you need to vent about?"
Lyra shook her head. "I can't say I have any."
Zephyr raised a brow. "Really?"
"I miss Japan!" Lyra broke down, comically at that.
Zephyr was completely taken by surprise. But then again, he did have to deal with a various amount of issues.
"I miss my home... I miss the cities, I miss the nature, the food, oh..."
Zephyr frowned. "Hey, its okay. Believe me, I understand."
"You do?" Lyra sniffled.
"Yeah. Believe it or not, I really miss Cloudsdale. Sure the place isn't great, but it was practically home to me before I ever settled down here in Canterlot."
"W-Well, what helped?"
Zephyr smiled to the Japanese-American. "What helped was finding the right people to talk to. Finding friends who could understand you, even help you make the place you were in now feel like home away from home."
"I suppose so but... I guess it just doesn't feel the same," Lyra hung her head.
"Well, perhaps you should talk to those friends of yours. Its always better to be to be with those who make you happy to get you out of any depressing mood."
The last appointment of the day, was none other than Vinyl Scratch. Just a simple cleaning and freshening of her hair, before she would have to go out for dinner.
"Alright Miss Scratch, your style has been brought out once again!"
Vinyl smiled, getting out of her seat.
"Thank you, Zephyr. I cannot express my gratitude enough."
"Helping people with their styles is what I'm all about."
After paying her bill, Vinyl headed out.
"Wait, do you have any issues you need to vent about?"
"Nope!"
"So nothing, uh--"
"--Not a thing!" Vinyl said, walking out of the store.
Zephyr just stood and watched as she left.
"Huh. Well alright then. Another day, another haircut."
And with closing time approaching, he flipped the closing sign around, and began to clean up.
