Chapter 12: Two Retro Girls Walk Into A Store...
Previous Chapter Next ChapterAuthor's Notes:
I like to thank user/follower Scholary-Cimmerian for the suggestion of this idea. And if you can, go give him a follow, he's got good ideas.
Anyways, so two girls who are into retro stuff walk into a bar...
Saturday at the Canterlot Mall was one of the best days of the week for any teenager who attended CHS, CPA, or any student for that matter. The Canterlot Mall had everything they could ask for, and it was a great way for them to take some time off from the stress of the work they had to do.
They had arcades, fashion stores, geek shops, video stores, toy stores, food courts, movie theaters, it had everything! There was no limit to this place, it was big enough for everything.
And spending Saturday at the mall was one of the favorite past-times for Amethyst Star. She always enjoyed kicking back and relaxing at the mall. Plenty of space, lots of stuff to do, people to hang out with, everything. And as a plus, she was happy with openly parading around in her dated 80s clothes. No one really picked her out for that, compared to everything else that the mall had seen. The mall had seen celebrities gone wild, attempted robberies, flash mobs, really, nothing was shocking or surprising at this point. A girl in shoulder pads and parachute pants wasn't anything new here.
Amethyst cracked her fingers as she stretched her body, preparing for an incoming run inside. She put a headset on, and moved her fingers down to her media player. Her exposed fingers through the fingerless gloves tapped the screen, and began to sliding through her music. Her index finger pressed a playlist, and her mix began to play.
Her foot made a single tap onto the ground. Followed by another tap, and she began tapping her foot on the ground, dancing to the beat. Her hips and her arms began to dance as well, and her hands clapped together. Then with one foot back, moving forward, she began to walk through the food court, on her way towards the main center of the mall.
Your butt is mine
Gonna tell you right
Just show your face
In broad daylight
Amethyst spun herself around, and started to moonwalk along the ground. Her sneakers perfectly sliding idly across the clean floors, and she held the top of her head like she was hiding her face under a hat. A few boys watched as she moon-walked on by, to wit a small grin on her face as she performed her dance moves.
She spun herself around and jumped right up onto the escalator step, dancing as she was taken straight up to the top floor. Her feet kept tapping and jumping as she continued to dance, letting out a few cheers.
"Shamone!" Amethyst cried out.
As she reached the top, she jumped off the stairs landing on the floor. She shuffled along to the right, moving briskly down past more stores. She waved at a few of the store owners, and a few of her friends that she passed on by. They too waved her back, grinning at her upbeat dancing and energetic movement.
Well they say the sky's the limit
And to me that's really true
But my friend you have seen nothin'
Just wait 'til I get through
Because I'm bad, I'm bad come on
You know I'm bad, I'm bad come on, you know
You know I'm bad, I'm bad come on, you know
She spun around in front of a single store, raising her arms up and yelling 'Shamone!' again. She hit her finger on the stop button on her music, and put her headset away. She'd need to be able to hear if someone were talking to her. She walked inside, and her eyes instantly glued to the disco ball that was hanging above the ceiling, reflecting all of the light that bounced on it.
She flashed a grin on her face as she walked inside.
"Hey, hey, hey! If it isn't my favorite customer," the man behind the counter called out.
"Hey, Blank Check! Good to see ya," Amethyst grinned, fist bumping him.
"So what can I get ya for today? What 1980s nostalgia are you looking for today?"
"Just thought I'd look around, see if you've got anything new." Amethyst grinned.
"Ah okay. Actually, I do have something you may like," Blank said.
"Yeah? What'd ya got for me?"
The manager reached under the counter he stood behind, and handed an item to the purple-skinned girl. A single neon blue visor, big enough to hide her eyes.
"Whoa..." Amethyst ogled the visor.
"Should be able to hide your eyes, and if you turn the lights out and flip the switch, it'll help you see in the dark. Plus it'll provide you some light."
"Sweet!" Amethyst clutched them out of his hands. "How much do I owe you?"
"That'll be 21.76."
Amethyst dug into her pants pocket, pulling out her wallet. Reaching in, she pulled out the cash needed and paid the man for the glasses.
"Oh, and before I forget," The man pulled out a box, handing her a plastic bag with had a bunch of square looking shapes seen through the plastic, "Your newest shipment of Rubik's Cubes have arrived. I take it you ran out of them?"
"Yeah, kinda wasted them on making traps," Amethyst chuckled. "Seriously though, thanks! This is sweet!"
"Its not a problem. Though maybe don't waste all of them? Maybe save them for when you actually need them?"
"I don't waste my ammo. Besides, I'm lookin' to probably make some more weapons as backups. But the problem is what to do... got any suggestions?"
"Super sticky encasing bubblegum?"
"Not smart enough," Amethyst shook her head.
"Yo-Yos which have melting strings?"
"Too stupid to even conjure up."
"Remote control cars?"
"Nope." Amethyst shook her head. "Wait... what if I made my keytar into a sonic powered keytar?"
The man raised a brow at the spandex wearing girl, looking less than impressed.
"Okay, I don't want to rain on your parade but how exactly are you going to do that? You're not that smart."
"Well, I... okay you got me there, I didn't think this all through," Amethyst admitted.
"Look, don't go over the top. At the very best, maybe cover up your keytar in something that makes it unbreakable, or even impossible to destroy. Use it like a bat or something, that'll work."
Amethyst shrugged with a few expressions switching on her face. "I suppose I could give that a shot."
"Just go for somethin' simple. Last time I checked, you told me you hurt your brain trying to figure out how to turn those Rubik's cubes into bombs," Blank stated.
"That was before though!"
Blank chuckled, "Well, you've come a long way, I can say that."
"I'll figure something out, I'm sure of it."
And politely, Amethyst stepped away from the desk so she could go wander. The man chuckled, watching her ogling the 1980s pop culture toys and memorabilia. Of course she would go look at that stuff...
And turning his head, he saw a new person walk into the store. Well, not really new, he knew her. But to others, she was new.
"Lemon Zest," Blank smiled, "There's my other favorite customer."
Walking inside was a girl with pink skin and punk styled green hair. She wore yellow short shorts, black sneakers, a dark pink tank top with a graphic of lemon slices, and on her hands were neon blue fingerless gloves. But the biggest detail that Blank Check could pick out was the cassette player that she had strapped to her right side.
"Hey, wazzup dude?" Lemon grinned.
She gave the man a high five.
"Nothin' much, how have you been? School's treating you okay?"
"You bet. Not a problem, not a worry in the world," Lemon smiled. "Say, you got the uh... you know?"
"Of course."
He reached under the desk and pulled out a single stack of cassette tapes.
"Surprised there are still people who even like this stuff. I thought everyone would just be going for digital now," Blank remarked.
"Oh, I would never do that!" Lemon said, waving her hands, "Not my forte, honestly."
"Glad to see there's still some young people who respect the older days," Blank chuckled. "Anyways, your cassettes all together should be about $25."
"Kay!"
Lemon Zest paid her bill and clutched the cassette tapes. She jolted her head to the side, and caught the girl with the neon spandex staring back at her. The two had their eyes locked onto each other, like deer in the headlights.
Complete silence fell through the store, and Amethyst quickly broke it. She slowly walked towards her, stopping midway across from her, providing space in between. The two looked at each other awkwardly. The attire, the materials that they were carrying on each other.
"So... you're an 80s geek too, huh?" Lemon asked.
"Mmmhmmm." Amethyst nodded.
"I could tell from the spandex that's hugging your hips," Lemon winked.
"And its pretty easy for me since you've got a Walkman attached to your hip," Amethyst crossed her arms with a smirk.
"What can I say? Love 'em cassette tapes."
"Where are you from, anyways?" Amethyst asked.
"CPA."
Amethyst's eyes widened. "Crystal Prep?"
"Eeyup."
Amethyst's eyes slowly furled, glaring right at her. "I've only got one thing to say to you..."
"Yeah?" Lemon said, trying to look as intimidating as she could.
The two gave each other heavy glares. The manager only stood there unamused and watched the two awkward geeks look like they were about to have a throw down. He could easily tell where this was going to go in 3. 2. 1.
"You gonna be hanging here later today?"
"Yeah dude, where else would I go? Got nothin' better to do," Lemon shrugged.
"Maybe we could meet later down in the food court?" Amethyst asked.
Lemon flashed a grin. "I'd like that."
Amethyst giggled. "See you then, Lemon Zest."
"You too!"
Lemon was about to run off with her purchased items but she grinded to a halt. "Wait!" She turned around. "I didn't get your name."
Amethyst tapped her foot, then looked back at Lemon. "Just call me Amy."
"Okay! See ya Amy!" Lemon giggled.
Lemon skipped out of the store, going off on her merry way. Amethyst just shook her head, grinning a stupid grin on her face.
"Heh. Cute girl."
The store manager looked at Amethyst. A cheeky smirk came to his lips.
"So... you going to ask her out?"
Amethyst's cheeks blushed. "Dah, no! No, I'm not! I'm just simply going to have a meal with her, no romantic interest whatsoever!"
"Your face says otherwise. I know that look a mile away."
Amethyst grabbed her already paid belongings and started to walk away. Her face was now on fire.
"I'm not going to ask her out! Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go shop some more and go on a 'totally not a date' interaction!" Amethyst ran out of the store. For two seconds. "And for the record, I don't think I bend that way!"
The manager just chuckled and shook his head as she ran out again. For two seconds.
"I'm 90% sure I don't bend that way!"
Blank Check just rolled his eyes as he went back to work. This would make an interesting meeting for sure.
