Chapter 10: If You Give A Bon Bon A Knife

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Author's Notes:

Okay, so this doesn't really explain anything, but it's just something I came up with on the fly. I'll write a proper backstory later in the shorts. :raritywink:

Til then, enjoy some random slice of life fluff:rainbowwild:

Lyra and Vinyl hid behind the counter. They watched as their chef friend went violently insane against the cutting board. Every single piece of vegetable and ingredient she needed to cut was met with the cold steel of the cutting knife. The scowl on her face remained permanent as she continued to cut away.

"Uh Bon Bon, maybe you should--"

The knife went straight down, digging into the wooden board. Vinyl gulped and looked Bon Bon in the eyes. Those scary... angry... heartless looking eyes. It was said if she looked straight into the center of her eyes, she'd see the devil sitting and laughing. And she was scared to even imagine that thought.

"Do not distract me. Got it?"

Vinyl nodded quickly. "Okay, okay! Sorry!"

Not even a micro-second later, Bon Bon went straight back to chopping the food like a madwoman. It was like she was going to flip if someone said one wrong thing. But what made her even more scary was seeing the amount of food that went flying everywhere as she chopped it violently.

"Geez, have you ever seen Bon Bon this mad?" Vinyl asked.

"Trust me, I've seen this before. Best thing to do, well as a start, just leave her be and don't distract her. Let her wear herself out, she'll get tired eventually." Lyra said, ducking behind the counter as more and more food was sliced and diced.

Peeking around the corner, Aria Blaze and Sonata Dusk watched the scene in horror. Bon Bon's angry cooking, the cowering Lyra and Vinyl, it was a scene that was so new to the eyes.

"Um, girls? Is everything okay?" Aria asked.

Lyra chuckled nervously. "Oh, Aria, hey!" Lyra's voice grew shaky, "Say uh, you know Bon Bon's a chef, right?"

"Right."

"And did you know she's about to sign on for a job?"

"Um, no." Aria shook her head.

"Yeah, neither did I..." Not even a second later, Lyra's shaky voice turned a complete 180 and she screamed, "Until she went completely mental! Now she's slicing everything she sees in front of her!"

She listened to a loud slam of the knife against the cutting board. She looked behind and saw Bon Bon's attention was on her. She made a few slams against the board, nudging her head towards one of the counters.

"Oh, you think you should slice another onion? No no, that's fine, I know you're okay with that," Lyra said, smiling nervously. One wrong move and she'd be the one who'd be used against the cutting knife.

"Can I just get a piece of that shrimp?" Sonata asked.

Bon Bon threw her knife down again, flashing her pearly whites.

"Stop cutting already Bon Bon! You're slicing them into ribbons now!" Sonata whined.

"Okay, Lyra, question. First of all, still rocking that kimono. Second, just what the flying feather is going on!?"

Lyra took a deep breath, and then looked to the two siblings.

"Bon Bon has applied to work in a kitchen at a restaurant. Unfortunately what she failed to understand is that she needs to show the head chef she's more than capable of cooking. And, well... Bon Bon started to freak out."

Lyra looked back at Bon Bon, watching her continue to tear apart the vegetables in front of her.

"You know, Bon Bon's dangerous enough when she's stressed out or mad, but give her a knife and its Goodnight Gracie!" Lyra exclaimed.

Looking back, she saw Bon Bon's attention was back at Lyra, and she slammed her knife against the cutting board. Heavy emphasis was put on the peppers as she nudged her head towards them, still giving that rage face.

"Oh you want to slice the peppers, oh sure, the pieces have been getting a bit big, go to town!" Lyra said, trying to sound as calm as possible. Aria could see her trying to put on her best calm face but then the minute she turned she was back to her stressed face, "There's about a 1 out of 4 chance of us coming out of this house alive!"

"Bon Bon." Sonata tried to say over Bon Bon's slicing.

She didn't reply.

"Bon Bon."

Still nothing.

"Bon Bon!!!"

Sonata groaned. "That's it. Aria, shall we?"

Aria looked to Sonata who gestured to the red pendent around her neck. Seeing how Bon Bon wasn't letting up, the choice was made clear to them.

"Alright. Lets try it."

Their pendents let out a little hum, and the two of them together began to sing.

Ahhh, ahhh ahh... ahh ahh...
Ahhh, ahhh ahh... ahh ahh...

Bon Bon's slicing began to slow down, and she began to calm down. She panted a bit from how hard she had been cutting up the food, and she let out a few breaths. Her hand shakily let go of the knife, letting it lay on the cutting board. She looked to Aria and Sonata who's eyes glowed as they sang, and she started to calm down some more.

"You feel better now?" Sonata asked.

Bon Bon cleared her throat and sighed. "No..."

"What's got you stressed?" Aria asked. "You're an excellent cook."

"I know, but... I'm just, I don't know if I will do well at this job. They expect me to be able to prepare something good to show my skills but---"

"Bon Bon."

The chef looked up to Sonata who held her shoulders. Looking into her eyes, she gave a small smile.

"Its going to be okay. You know you're good at what you do, you know you've got the skills. But freaking out isn't going to help you or anyone."

Bon Bon took a deep breath. Inhale... and exhale. Inhale... and exhale.

"You're right. I got this. I just need to keep it together."

"And hey, maybe we can help you. Is there a specific meal you have to prepare?" Aria asked.

"No. They just want me to make something, but I don't know what I should make. Will they like it, will they not, I don't know."

Vinyl snapped her fingers. "I have an idea."

Bon Bon looked to her friend. "You do?"

Vinyl nodded with a smile.

The following week came, and Bon Bon was finishing stirring up the food she was told to prepare. The hot steam rose from the pot, hitting her nose and making her mouth water. It smelled like heaven. Carefully, she put a spoon into the bowl and gave a quick taste test.

Her lips smacked together, and she had a smile on her face. It was done, and ready!

"Alright, I'm done!"

Preparing the bowls, she poured some of the soup into the bowl, carefully as possible. The head chef sat at a small table, waiting for her to bring the food she prepared. Carefully setting it down in front of them, she made a single bow, and backed away.

The head chef took his spoon, and sipped some of the soup that she had made. Bon Bon nervously stood and watched, sweat running down her head, and her heart pounding against her chest. This one moment could change everything for her. Would she be allowed to apply, or not?

The chef set the spoon back down into the bowl, and looked Bon Bon in the eye.

"Miss Drops. After analyzing how you handled things with what we gave you, and seeing how well you put this together... you're hired."

Bon Bon gasped with a big grin. "You mean...?"

"I mean it. You passed the test."

Bon Bon felt like screaming to the world, squeeing in delight. But she wasn't going to do that. She had to keep her professionalism intact. Clearing her throat, she looked the chef in the eye with a straight face.

"That's good to hear sir. I'm glad I passed. When would you like me to start working?"

"I'll send you an email regarding the schedules we have here. We'll let you know when you can start working. I think you may need some time to prepare yourself for this job. After all, you have school, don't you?"

"Mmmhmm."

"I thought so. Anyways, great job, and we'll let you know when you can start working."

"Thank you, Chef." Bon Bon replied, grabbing her belongings. She waved goodbye and she left the kitchen, walking out of the exit as calm as she could. Once she was outside, she found the two former Sirens and some of her friends.

"So, how'd it go?" Lyra asked.

Bon Bon looked back to the building, making sure no one could see her. Then once it was clear--

"I'm in!!!" Bon Bon squeed. "I passed, I passed, I passed, WHOO!!!"

Lyra and Vinyl chuckled, seeing Bon Bon's excitement.

"See, what did we tell you?" Sonata smirked.

"I knew I got this, I knew it! I just knew it!"

Aria chuckled, "Okay, easy up there Chef B.B. Now come on, what do you say we go find the others, tell them the good news?"

"Or better yet, tonight, I'm cookin' for every one of you! Cause this is the best day ever!" Bon Bon cheered.

And with an overly excited Bon Bon jumping and prancing about like a little kid, the girls giggled and followed her close behind. Boy, they were going to be receiving a lot of strange looks from people...
