Chapter 3: Warning Signs

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Author's Notes:

Warning: Some inappropriate humor may ensue.

In regards to the conversation with Indigo and Sour, I wrote that bit because that is what I remember from shop class so, so I wrote that part from my own experience with the course. Its been 7 years since I took it so, just warning you ahead of time, it probably won't be a good conversation.

And in all honesty, this chapter is a little discombobulated. Hopefully I can get back on track with the next one.

Final thing, and I can't believe I'm asking this, with the lowbrow humor and things I'm saying in this, do you all believe it should stay for rated T?

As time went by over at Crystal Prep, the hours turned to the lunch break. And nowadays at Crystal Prep, the girls would always eat outside in the parking lot if their robot companions were ever outside. Today they saw their temporary transforming guardians were still here so they decided to eat outside to hang out with them during their break. All except for Sour Sweet who didn't join them.

Sunny Flare pushed the door open, holding it open for her friends while they walked through the door with no issues whatsoever. Once they made it out, they greeted their Guardian friends who were all sitting in some of the parking spots in their robot forms waiting for the girls.

"Afternoon girls," Good Knight said with a cheery voice.

"How are your classes going?" Sparky asked.

"Our classes are fine, but remember this is our lunch break. We've still got a few more left to go," Sunny replied as she took a seat down on the curb, near one of the Guardians.

As the girls all took seats on the concrete curb, Smallfoot who was in vehicular form pulled up towards them slowly so she didn't scare them.

"Smallfoot? Dearie, what are you doing here? I thought you would have other things to do today," Sunny Flare replied.

Smallfoot's truck form began to convert. Her arms slided out from her sides, her legs folded out from the back end of the truck and her head popped out from the grill, followed by the front grill guard sliding down over her chest. The grill guard shined with a glimmer of sparkles.

Lemon began snickering as she looked at the grill guard that was on Smallfoot's chest. Smallfoot rolled her eyes.

"What's so funny Lemon?" Smallfoot asked.

"*snicker*, nothing. I just wanted to say...," Lemon snickered some more and there were some tears coming from her eyes, she was really trying not to laugh.

"--Nice rack, Smallfoot," Lemon burst out laughing and she fell on her back laughing like a hyena. It wasn't until long that Indigo began laughing too, she finally caught on the joke Lemon told. The only ones that weren't laughing were... everyone else. Everyone else around them were either groaning, shaking their heads, or facepalming from Lemon's cringe-worthy joke.

Smallfoot looked at Lemon and Indigo with an unamused look. While she would sometimes find some humor in some of Lemon's crude jokes, she wasn't having it today. Sour Sweet's sadness was the one thing she was focused on.

"Ha... ha. Very funny..." Smallfoot said sarcastically. "And just where did you get that joke?"

Lemon giggled, "I'm sorry. I only now noticed that the grill guard flips over your breasts so... I couldn't resist!"

Smallfoot rolled her eyes, "Is there ever a time when you're not making extremely crude humor?"

"Nope!" Lemon laughed.

"Lemon! Behave yourself," Sunny scolded softly, "Just because you notice something you find humorous doesn't mean you need to say it out loud."

"Sorry, sorry," Lemon said, "please, continue."

"Anyways... I need your help girls, on a particular subject."

"Name it... big rack," Indigo joked, still trying to calm herself down from laughing. Smallfoot just groaned to herself.

"And I'm here trying to get advice from teenagers...," Smallfoot groaned, "Okay, well... have any of you noticed Sour Sweet's unusual sadness, recently?"

The girls all looked to each other, and then back at Smallfoot delivering agreeing nods.

"Okay, question number 2. Has anyone picked up on when it started? I know it began last week but I think something from you girls might have set her off," Smallfoot said.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa. What makes you think we caused this? How do we know you aren't the cause of her sadness?"

Smallfoot looked at the girls with a frustrated look and huffed, "Come on."

"Okay, okay, lets not be too hasty here. Lets try and think about this. Okay, we all talked with Sour at some point during last week, and that was when her moodiness began to spring into her step. Something we must have said might have got her upset," Sunny Flare interrupted.

"But what did any of you say to get her sad or upset at?" Sparky asked.

Sunny scratched her chin as she thought, "You know, I do remember a conversation I had with her a while back last week..."

Sunny Flare stood in the hallway with Sour Sweet as the two of them were grabbing their belongings before they had to go for next class.

"So do you have any plans for the weekend?" Sunny Flare asked.

"Nope, I'm all free. Hopefully no fugitives or Renegades will ruin it though," Sour grumbled. "What about you?"

"Oh, I'm sorry Sour. I'm busy this weekend, I'm going to meet my boyfriend's parents," Sunny Flare said urgently as she rushed to grab her things.

Sour immediately pulled away, and rubbed the side of her arm, right up near the border where it met with the shoulder.

"Oh, okay, I guess...", Sour said.

"We can still hang out though," Sunny said reassuring her friend.

"No, its alright. I don't want to be intruding on you or your plans," Sour said backing away, "I think I'm just gonna go head to class."

Sour didn't say another word, but instead grabbed her books and ran off down the hallway to her class. She didn't even look back to see Sunny Flare looking back at her, very concerned. Did she say something to set her off?

"... And she never said anything after that. She didn't say anything, she never talked to me, she was silent the rest of the week as far as I've seen," Sunny Flare explained.

Smallfoot scratched her chin as she pondered what was explained, "Okay... Did anyone else have a talk with her?"

"Ooh, me! Me me me!" Lemon said, raising her hand up high as she could.

"You talked with her too?" Smallfoot asked.

Lemon nodded, "This was after school. But while I was walking with Sour..."

Lemon skipped happily down the sidewalk with Sour all the while her headset was blasting at a very high volume. The sound bleeded from the earphones and it went outside, at a decimal that even Sour and passing bystanders could hear it.

But all that came from Lemon's vision were the few emotions that were changing on Sour's face as she spoke. But as they walked, Lemon turned her head forward and while she didn't hear Sour from the headset she could read emotions and she continued to speak over the rock and roll.

Once she turned again, she saw a bit of a depressed look on her face. Why was she suddenly sad? What did she say to upset her?

"Wait, wait, wait..."

Lemon looked back at Smallfoot to see her hand raised up and with an unamused expression on her face.

"So let me get this straight, you were with her, and you didn't hear anything she had to say nor did you even hear anything that came out of your mouth?" Smallfoot asked.

"Uh... no," Lemon blushed.

Smallfoot's hand scrunched her face, "Lemon, for the thousandth time, you can't keep your headset at a volume normally reserved for movie theater sound commercials. This is why Principal Cinch keeps stealing your headsets."

"Well Cinch isn't here anymore is she?" Lemon said slyly.

Smallfoot groaned, "No..."

"So I can blast it up loud!"

Smallfoot just felt her hand on her face as she was shook her head. What was she going to do?

"Does anyone else have something to share about their encounter with her?" Smallfoot asked.

"I have something that might add a little more clues to your problem. While we were changing back into our regular clothes in gym class..."

Sugarcoat slammed her gym locker closed as she was getting her final things all together to get going to her next class. Sour Sweet was on the other side of her, grabbing her belongings as well.

"So, uh, are you busy for the weekend?"

"I am. I have to attend my sister's wedding, and apparently she'll get very feisty if I don't show up," Sugarcoat replied flatly.

"Oh... a wedding, that's, that's nice...", Sour said quietly. Sour muttered something to herself which wasn't understandable, but Sugarcoat could hear a bit of what she said.

"Are you okay?" Sugarcoat asked.

"I'm, I'm fine Sugarcoat. I... I hope you have a good time at the wedding," Sour said.

"Sour--"

"I said I'm fine!" Sour yelled, silencing Sugarcoat. Without anything else to do, Sugarcoat continued to get the rest of her things so she could go to her next class.

"After that, she didn't say another word to me," Sugarcoat replied.

Smallfoot scratched her chin as she soaked in what Sugarcoat had given her. Two possible ideas came to mind. Either she was feeling extremely lonely, or maybe there was something else she wasn't getting.

"Okay... I think I'm getting close to an idea on what her problem is, but its not enough. Indigo, did you pick up anything from her?"

"You bet. And I think I might have something that might just give us the answer...", Indigo smirked.

Indigo walked with Sour Sweet as the two of them were going down the hallway, on their way to shop class. The two of them had been working on making wooden cars to participate in a small little race.

"You know what kind of car you're gonna make?" Indigo asked.

"I'm thinking of making mine into a truck," Sour said, "I kind of want a part of Smallfoot to be with me."

"If you say so. I won't stop you. But mine's gonna be a hot rod, I guarantee I'm gonna win that competition," Indigo beamed.

Sour giggled a bit, "I hope so. Anyways, uh... are you or anyone else busy this weekend?"

"Oh I'm sorry, I'm taking Night Ranger out for some target practice and then I'm meeting my boyfriend for lunch," Indigo replied.

"Oh, that's... that's okay I guess," Sour said quietly.

Indigo stopped to look at her, "Are you okay?"

"I-I'm fine, lets... lets just get to class," Sour said rushing off towards the door leading to class leaving a confused Indigo behind. She stood for a moment, her lips curling into a questioning curl and her eyes lowering to watch her enter the classroom urgently. Something wasn't right...

"After that, she didn't say anything else. Just like with Sugarcoat, Sunny, and Lemon," Indigo said.

Smallfoot nodded as Indigo finished her story. She had all of their stories, now it was time to see about what the answer was. Smallfoot paced back and forth tapping her chin and holding one hand behind her back as she was thinking.

"Okay, so lets see what we have so far. She retracted away from Sunny because she mentioned going to meet her boyfriend's parents, Sugarcoat said she was attending her sister's wedding, and Indigo was planning on meeting her boyfriend... I think I'm starting to sense a rhythm here," Smallfoot said as she continued to pace.

"No gee, you think?" Sugarcoat said sarcastically.

Smallfoot stopped pacing to glare at Sugarcoat who stared blankly at the Guardian's green visor covered eyes.

"Sorry. I turned into Sour Sweet for a second there," Sugarcoat replied.

"At this point Sugarcoat, I'm used to people acting like that to me. But lets think here, what is she sad about? Lets see... wedding... boyfriend's parents... boyfriend...", Smallfoot droned off. A click went in her head. She had the answer.

"Girls, I think I've got a definitive conclusion," Smallfoot said with determination.

"Oh really? Regale us, Sherlock," Sugarcoat said.

"After everything you girls described to me I've got a possible conclusion. She's upset because she doesn't have a boyfriend, that's why she's been acting moody and sad around you girls whenever you brought it up," Smallfoot said.

"I don't really think Sour would be the type to be looking for a boyfriend," Sugarcoat said.

"And why do you say that?"

"She's shown no signs of interest in one, she quickly changes the subject when she's asked about it, and she pushes herself away from any guy we've tried to set her up with but surprisingly has no problem being closer with any girl," Sugarcoat replied.

Smallfoot's finger drooped, "Okay then... So that's out the window. Maybe she's just upset because she has no one to love."

"That could be an answer. But I don't see why she would be upset about that, she seems to take her anger out on almost everyone whenever they get on her nerves, now suddenly she's desiring for for a romantic partner?" Sunny said.

"I know its strange Sunny, but I can't let her stay sad like this."

"And why do want to help her on this?" Indigo asked, "You're a machine."

"Cyborg, Indigo. I'm a cyborg. And I want to help her because I don't like seeing Sour sad. I want to make her happy, she deserves the best. I just... I hate seeing her this down," Smallfoot said.

"Aw, that's sweet of you," Sunny replied.

"I guess... but how can I help her? I want to make her feel loved but... I don't know how," Smallfoot said. "I've tried reminding her that I'm always there for her but... it doesn't seem like she feels it. I think I might need to kick things up a notch."

"Well I have an idea!" Lemon grinned.

"Don't listen to her, its a trap," Sugarcoat bluntly replied.

Smallfoot wasn't sure how to respond to what Sugarcoat had said. But Lemon got up on her feet and moved up close to where Smallfoot was.

"Down lower, I'm gonna whisper it in your ear," Lemon said.

Smallfoot hesitantly lowered herself down so Lemon could reach up close to the side of her head to whisper into her audio receptor. But what Smallfoot was being told wasn't something she wanted to hear. Lemon whispered something highly disturbing and her response was her eyes widening and her jaw dropping.

"What did you say!?" Smallfoot shrieked.

Lemon burst out laughing and she fell on her back while clutching onto her stomach. Sunny and Sugarcoat groaned and shook their heads. They could only imagine that Lemon said something very inappropriate.

"Lemon, must you say such things?" Sunny said.

"Come on, she's an old robot!"

"I'm not that old! In comparison with your human years, I'm basically 19! Why would you tell me something like... never mind," Smallfoot said.

Lemon giggled some more, "So... you gonna do it?"

Smallfoot glared at Lemon with glowing eyes, "Lemon, there's a line between trying to do something nice and going too far. That is way too far, and I think that only goes if a couple is in a deeper relationship. I'm trying to make her happy, not... that."

Smallfoot looked to the other girls, "Let me try this again, does anyone have a suggestion for how I can make Sour happy without being too inappropriate?"

"Well, maybe you could--"

Sunny didn't get to finish her sentence for at that moment the bell went off, signalling the end of lunch.

"Oh shoot, we've got five minutes until we go to class! How about this, we'll talk about this once school's over, we can discuss it then."

Smallfoot nodded, "Okay. Perfect. I just hope Sour doesn't find out. Promise you won't speak about this?"

"Our lips are sealed... big rack," Indigo laughed as she began walking to the door with the rest of the girls.

Smallfoot's arms crossed each other and she snarled, "That's not funny Indigo."

"Yes it is!" Indigo shouted before the door closed behind them. Smallfoot just shook her head and groaned. Maybe getting advice from a few immature teenagers wasn't such a bright idea.

"You okay Smallfoot?" Street Heat asked, observing Smallfoot's distress.

"I'm fine. I just hope Sour will be okay," Smallfoot said with worry.
