Chapter 31: Dark Yo-kai (Part 1)

Kin and Gin appeared high above the sky. They looked down on Ponyville and all of the houses blanketed by the moonlight's glow. A small grin crept onto their faces as they swooped down towards Twilight's castle.

"I still don't know why King Void trusted the Dark Yo-kai to us, Kin," said Gin as they flew.

"King Void's Dark Yo-kai are beyond anything we could've ever imagined." Kin made a claw out of her left hand, letting black lightning bolts streak between the prints of each of her fingers. "Not only are they much stronger than our old leader's Wicked Yo-kai, but they are far more erratic. In that sense, they can move in much different patterns than their regular counterparts."

"Was that why they were twitching back at the king's castle?" Gin raised a brow.

"That is simply their stable forms. Dark Yo-kai don't like staying in one place too long." Kin landed on the rooftop point of Twilight's castle. "When Dark Yo-kai are unleashed, they bounce and jump around like pinballs, driving their claws and dark energy into everyone and everything that they can find. They can't take control of mortals like the Wicked Yo-kai can, but they amplify their victim's powers by a much more considerable margin than the Wicked."

"Is that all?" Gin hovered beside her.

"There's much more than that." Kin nodded. "But we should really find out for ourselves. What's the point in ruining the surprise anyway?"

Kin and Gin gathered dark energy in their hands and channelled it to create a massive orb of black energy. Once it was big enough, they threw the orb down on the town, coating it with darkness. The blast was only momentary and nothing had been destroyed or damaged, but there were black puddles beginning to form all over the town.

"Rise, our pets..." Kin chuckled and thrust her claw skyward. "Bring this wretched village down! Eliminate Twilight Sparkle and her prissy pony friends!"

From the black puddles, Dark Yo-kai began to rise. Hands erupted first, before their bodies and heads, with their legs following after. They all got up and groaned in a similar matter to zombies as they took on their physical forms. Yo-kai that Twilight had met already and ones she had yet to meet were all gathering to obey Kin and Gin's orders.

"Let's see how Twilight deals with this..." both Kin and Gin said together, sharing chuckles between each other before they created a black portal. They flew through it and vanished without a trace, leaving the town covered with Dark Yo-kai.

The next day, Whisper and Twilight examined a destroyed applecart in the town. Apples had been spilled everywhere and the cart itself had been completely destroyed beyond all repair. There were traces of black and purple slime on the splintered pieces of wood. The sludge glowed and radiated a black spore that faded into the air.

"And you're saying that a Yo-kai might be the cause of it?" Twilight asked Applejack, who was busy picking up all of the apples.

"Ah don't see anything else that could've caused it." Applejack shook her head and scooped up another batch of apples. "Nopony could've just rammed into my applecart in the middle of the day and caused such a strike like that. Heck, not even Rainbow Dash could've destroyed this. It's the sturdiest wood the Apple Family has."

"Maybe we should check out the scene of the crime in more detail, Twilight." Whisper gently tapped Twilight's shoulders and retrieved a magnifying glass. "Who knows? If we look hard enough, we might just find something important."

"Good idea, Whisper." Twilight walked back over to the wrecked cart. "Best to know who we're dealing with, after all."

Twilight and Whisper examined as many pieces of the wood as possible, looking for the slightest bit of a clue as to how the cart could have been totalled. Unfortunately, their search proved fruitless as they could only find toothpick-shaped pieces of the cart and more apples.

"Whisper? I think I found something..." Twilight noticed a piece of shattered wood with the black goo on it. She slowly walked forward and picked it up. "What is this? I don't think I've ever seen something like this before..."

"Hmm. Maybe I should get a better look at it." Whisper took the wood and reached into his belly, retrieving a microscope.

"Can I just ask where in the world did you get a microscope?" Twilight watched Whisper set the apparatus down on the ground and place the wood beneath.

"What? A butler must be prepared for any and all circumstances!" Whisper retorted. "Also, you did kind of leave your lab open the last time I was in there, so I seized the opportunity."

"Whisper! That's mine!" Twilight shoved him aside and looked down the lens herself, modifying the scope to increase the zoom on the substance.

The black goo upon closer inspection was pulsating ever so slightly. Faint whispers of screams could be heard every time that it bubbled up. Aside from that, there was nothing else special about it other than the spore it was radiating.

"What is this thing...?" Twilight zoomed in even more, to the point where she couldn't see anything else anymore through the lens of her microscope.

"Twilight! Mind your manners when you push someone!" Whisper got back from the ground and floated back over to her. "There was absolutely no reason for you to push me like that! You could've just asked, you know."

"Whisper, I can't make anything out of this black slime." Twilight gave the microscope back to Whisper with her magic. "You might want to take a look at this yourself."

Whisper looked through the lens of the microscope at the dark substance for a while, watching the slime move around ever so slightly. After he observed it, he gave the microscope back to Twilight.

"Now this is odd," he said. "It has faint marking of Yo-kai energy, but it seems to have been all but blotted out by the goo."

"You're saying that it's some new Yo-kai thing that neither of us have ever seen before?" Twilight cocked a brow and looked at the black substance herself.

"Yes. Not only have I never seen this sort of stuff before, but it's never been recorded in history at all! This a brand-new discovery for both my world and yours!" Whisper pulled his eye from the microscope. "It's rather ominous and quite ghastly, but it's something new nonetheless."

"Do you think it could be linked with the destruction of Applejack's cart?" Twilight asked.

"It's very likely. It was on multiple pieces of wood, as I recall..." Whisper looked at the other wood pieces lying around on the dirt road.

"SKRRAAWWWW!"

"What was that?" Twilight looked around and readied her Yo-kai Watch.

She found absolutely nothing when she looked around. No matter where she pointed the Yo-kai Watch, she couldn't find any Yo-kai nearby that could be her culprit. Sweat began to run down from her brow as the noise was repeated, sounding similar to that of a bald eagle's cry.

"Twilight! Black Yo-kai alert!" Whisper pointed in the exact same direction Twilight was looking.

"But where?! I can't see anything!" Twilight responded. "My Yo-kai Watch isn't picking anything up!"

"Oh dear. Don't tell me that the Wicked Yo-kai have been re-introduced..." Whisper fished his belly one more time and pulled out the glasses that Twilight had worn when she found Sgt. Burly. "Here you go, Twilight."

Twilight put the glasses on and could immediately see the new Yo-kai flying before her. It was similar in appearance to Buhu, only its' entire body was black and glowed purple, similar to how the slime looked. Instead of a crying face, an evil face with a wide grin and piercing red eyes was on its' stomach, while its' floppy head grew some fangs.

"Gyahahahahahaha! Fear me, mortals!" said the Yo-kai. "I am the last thing your world will ever see! I am none other than the fiendish Miseraven!"

"Miseraven?" Twilight looked at the Buhu clone. "Whisper? Do you have any knowledge on this Yo-kai?"

"No!" Whisper tapped on his Yo-kai Pad as fast as he could. "He's not a normal Yo-kai, nor a Boss Yo-kai. Heck, he's not even a Wicked Yo-kai either!"

"Then what is he?" Twilight barked.

"Fight me, puny pony and flying egg!" Miseraven glared at Twilight and Whisper. "I shall destroy your pitiful village, just as I took down that flimsy applecart!"

"Twilight! What's going on?" Applejack asked as Twilight took a few steps backward.

"Applejack. There are some more Yo-kai around here. You'd better get out of here before you get hurt!" She called over to her.

"No way. We've faced danger like this before, haven't we?" Applejack stood right next to Twilight. "And I'm sure we can handle something like a single little—" before she could even finish, she was blasted into the distance by a black wingbeat formed from Miseraven's wings "—Yo-kaaaaiiiiiiiiiiggghhhhh!"

"Pathetic, really." Miseraven snarled and jolted around, his body shaking like a jelly in an earthquake. "Now then. Shall we battle?"

"Guess we don't have a choice." Whisper retrieved Twilight's Yo-kai Medallium. "I mean, he called me an EGG! I AM NOT AN EGG! Fried, scrambled, sunny side up, boiled, or even poached! I. Am. Whisper! W-H-I-S-P-E-R!"

Twilgiht rolled her eyes and retrieved her Yo-kai Medal. "Come on out, my friend! Calling Darumacho!" Twilight threw the medal high. "Yo-kai Medal, do your thing!" She shoved it into the slot.

"SUMMONING: TOUGH!" The watch summoned Darumacho in flashes of orange light.

Gruff stuff!
Rough bluff!
Red ban, jacket stand, bling-blang
TOUGH!

"Darumacho!" He banged his knuckles together and appeared before Miseraven.

"Weak." Miseraven fired off another black wingbeat towards Darumacho, who put his fists forward to repel the attack.

"Darumacho! Attack!" Twilight pointed at Miseraven.

Darumacho charged in and tried to punch Miseraven, but the small bird's form was so unstable that it warped right out of the way of the attack and clawed at Darumacho's back twice, leaving deep cuts in his back.

"Hurt..." Miseraven drove its' claws into Darumacho's back, causing the Yo-kai to scream as loud as he could. "Kill..." Miseraven then lifted him high into the air and threw him towards the fountain. "DESTROY!"

"Darumacho!" Twilight reached out and reclaimed his medal from the watch. "Guess we're gonna have to try something else."

"It would seem that way." Whisper looked at how Miseraven hovered in the air. "Though, I must say that I've never seen something quite as vicious as Miseraven before..."

"Guess it's time to see what you can do, eh, Whisper?" Twilight pulled out his Yo-kai Medal.

"What?! Me?!" Whisper stumbled backwards at the sight of his medal in Twilight's hooves. "Twilight. Let's think logically about this—"

"Come on out, my friend! Calling Whisper!" Twilight threw the next medal up.

"Twilight! Please be sure to rethi—"

"Yo-kai Medal, do your thing!"

"I HAVEN'T HAD A FIGHT IN MY ENTIRE LIIIIIIFFFFFEEEEE!" Whisper cried out as he disappeared into a black hole with a light-blue ring around it.

"Huh. Guess that's what happens when I summon a Yo-kai on their end of the spectrum." Twilight watched the ring disappear.

"SUMMONING: SLIPPERY!" Light-blue rays of light poured out of the Yo-kai Watch this time.

Glippery!
Trippery!
Slimey-wimey-do, SLIPPERY!

"Gah!" Whisper crashed into the ground and pulled his head out of the dirt.

"C'mon, buddy. I'm counting on you." Twilight gave Whisper a smile as he climbed out of the ground and brushed the remaining dirt off of his arms.

"Alright. It has been a while, hasn't it?" Whisper cracked the muscles in his neck and hands as he eyed up Miseraven. "I might be a rusty old ghost, but I still know a trick or two. Try this!" He took in some air, causing little pink balls of light to fly off of Miseraven.

"OUCH!" Miseraven said as the balls left his body.

"Nice hit, Whisper! Now hit him again!" Twilight smiled.

"Grr... Lucky hit." Miseraven swooped down on Whisper and jittered some more before fazing straight through him. He was about to launch a counterattack when Whisper somersaulted underneath him and dealt him a strong uppercut.

"Haha! I'm not just some flimsy little companion!" Whisper declared as he grabbed Miseraven's feet and threw him towards Twilight. "I'm Whisper! And you shall not forget my name, little Yo-kai."

"Enough of this! Dark Soultimate Charge!" Miseraven flapped his wings hard enough to avoid being impaled by Twilight's horn.

"Dark Soultimate?" Whisper froze up at the name. "What the heck's a Dark Soultimate?"

"THIS!" Miseraven gathered enough black energy and shot towards Whisper like a comet. Black slipstreams followed him as he flew towards the Yo-kai. "MISERY MAELSTROM!" With a stronger wingbeat than before, he launched a stronger gale that sent Whisper flying through the town, crashing into multiple houses before busting the doors of Town Hall open.

"Ngghh. What strength!" Twilight fought against the backblast from the heavy winds and watched Whisper struggle to get back up. "I've never seen a Yo-kai that strong be so powerful before."

"Time to finish you!" Miseraven flew towards Whisper, claws unfurled and ready to strike. "DIE!"

Whisper got back up and drew his fist back. He watched Miseraven get closer to him and waited for the perfect moment to strike. When he was close enough to him, Whisper thrust his fist straight at Miseraven so hard that it went straight through the bird's body, causing its' physical being to break up and disperse across the town before vanishing for good.

"That was a close one." Twilight ran over to Whisper and helped him get back up into the air. "Are you alright, Whisper?"

"Yes. Yes I am." Whisper coughed up some green slime and wiped his mouth. "Though I must say that that battle took a lot more out of me than I expected. I've never seen any Yo-kai like that before in my life, let alone that strong!"

"What do you think it was?" Twilight asked once she pulled the Yo-kai Medal out of the watch and put it back into her Medallium.

"Well, they definitely weren't related to the Wicked Yo-kai. I know that for sure." Whisper shook his head. "But where they did come from intrigue me..."

"So, what now?" Twilight asked.

"We should check on the rest of the town, make sure no-one else had to deal with Miseraven or any other Yo-kai related to him." Whisper looked at the destroyed fountain and how it was spewing water everywhere. "But most of all, we should check on the rest of your friends. If Miseraven could blow Applejack away with ease, then I worry what could happen to Pinkie Pie, Rarity, Rainbow Dash, and Fluttershy."

"Then what in the hay are we standing here for?" Twilight unfurled her wings and took to the skies. "Come on! We've gotta get to Sugarcube Corner fast!"

Whisper followed closely behind Twilight, on the lookout for any other Yo-kai with similar colour schemes and menacing designs.

"And so it begins." Venoct watched from the rooftops. "Dark Yo-kai befall this world."

"King Void's infantry will soon reduce Ponyville to rubble if Princess Twilight doesn't fix this." Kyubi crossed her arms and shot a ball of fire at another Dark Yo-kai, causing it to disappear in a similar manner to Miseraven. "Venoct. We should provide support. Make sure that there's not too much damage."

"Good idea." Venoct nodded. "I shall take the market while you handle the suburbs." He felt his dragon scarf thrash about wildly, letting out muffled roars as both heads craned skyward. "Come, Orochi. Now we shall sate your hunger."

Venoct and Kyubi dashed in separate directions to aid with fighting the Dark Yo-kai. Neither of them looked back at each other as they jumped from rooftop to rooftop, looking for their targets.

Author's Notes:

As a disclaimer, most of the Dark Yo-kai will have their names changed so that they are all more negative forms of their original Yo-kai. For example, Miseraven is the Dark Yo-kai form of Buhu, and his powers are more geared towards making people suffer extremely painful misery.

If you like this idea, than be sure to help me out with naming other Dark Yo-kai. It can be as clever or as unclever as you want, just as long as it's not something like Dark Fidgephant or Dark Faysoff or even Dark Lady Longneck...

As always, like, comment, subscribe, all that usual jazz, and just talk to me. I like hearing you guys talk.
