Chapter 30: Weathering the Crystal Empire

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Twilight, Whisper, and Jibanyan rode together on the train up north towards the Crystal Empire. The Yo-kai were looking out the window to look at all of the sights while Twilight flipped through the pages of her Yo-kai Medallium.

"Whisper, Jibanyan, calm down." Twilight waved her hoof towards the two of them. "It's just the Crystal Empire. Nothing really special about it nowadays. Well... at least for me, that is."

"I hardly doubt how such a place named after crystal could be boring to you, Twilight." Whisper pulled his head out of the window. "For me and Jibanyan, I have to say that this has been a rather riveting trip up to now."

"Nyeah! I'm super excited for this trip too!" Jibanyan leapt up to Twilight's shoulders as well. "But, I gotta ask, why are we going up here in the first place?"

"Well, I got this letter from Shining Armour and Cadence." Twilight pulled it out from her saddlebags and showed it off to Jibanyan. "You and Whisper should take a look at this."

Dear Twilight.

We'd like you to come up to the Crystal Empire with your friends. There's been an issue involving the weather in the Crystal Empire. And before you ask, it's not Flurry Heart's doing this time. Sunburst's been doing a great job controlling her powers. But more to the point, the weather in the Crystal Empire's extremely out of control. It's sunny, then rainy, then snowy, then back to sunny, then rainy and sunny, and then all three at once.

Do you think you could fix this?

—Cadence.

"Hmm. Perhaps there are Yo-kai behind these weather-related occurences." Whisper read through the letter one more time. "Me and Nate have had to deal with many weather-related Yo-kai back in the past..."

"Including one super-nasty Yo-kai capable of causing typhoons!" Jibanyan added.

"There are Yo-kai that cause typhoons?!" Twilight lurched backwards to the sound of the train's brakes. The second the train came to a halt, she was flung forward with the Yo-kai Medallium resting gently on her flanks when she landed, spilling most of her Yo-kai Medals over her hair and face.

"Crystal Empire, everyone!" The conductor called from the carriage door. "Gather all your belongings and watch your step when getting off of the train."

"Are you okay, Twilight?" Whisper asked as he picked the book off of Twilight's haunches. "That was a rather sudden stop, wasn't it?"

"I'm fine, Whisper." Twilight cleaned herself up and began putting her medals back into the book as she walked towards the exit. "It's just a train stop. Not like it's some big nasty weather Yo-kai or anything."

Twilight, Whisper, and Jibanyan walked off of the train and stepped down onto the platform. Before they could even take another step forward, however, something glimmer in the corner of their eyes. They turned their heads and let out massive gasps at what had happened.

The train had arrived at the station normally, but the conductor's cabin had crashed into a massive pile of snow. The miniature mountain of twinkling snow was half the size of the train but extremely thick. The nose had rammed right into it and it was only getting covered up by even more snow falling from the sky.

"A snowdrift on the tracks?" Twilight walked over towards the pile and rubbed her hoof across the snow. She shivered in doing so as she took a sample and licked it gently, smacking her lips. "It looks genuine enough, but do you really think that this much snow could've fallen that fast? And if that's the case, then why isn't the rest of the train line covered in it, or the station for that matter?" She scratched her chin with her hoof. "There's definitely something going on here. Yo-kai or not, it's up to us to set it right."

"Mayhaps an Alhail caused this." Whisper looked at the snow pile. "Alhails are known for causing freak blizzards whenever they're around. Even summer's not safe from these dastardly things."

"Alhail?" Twilight gave Whisper a smile. "Now that's a clever Yo-kai name. He sounds like a vicious ruler."

"Hey! Aren't we forgetting something? Like a visit to that girl Cadence you were talking about?" Jibanyan cut into Whisper and Twilight's conversation.

"Oh yeah! Sorry about that, Jibanyan." Twilight gently petted him on the head and let him climb up onto her back. "I got a little distracted. Let's move on, shall we?"

"Yes. Lets." Whisper nodded as he and Twilight turned towards the town. "We don't want to keep this Cadence waiting. If the whole town's like this then it's best we get to the source of the problem."

"I'm sure this is one storm we can weather." Twilight nodded. "I mean, we've dealt with much worse than some snow, rain, and sun. How bad could it be?"

"It's pretty bad!" Twilight exclaimed as she watched the state that the empire was in. Rain, sun, and snow domiated the area and sent ponies all around into a panic as they tried to take shelter from all of the elements.

"Oh my..." Whisper looked around at all of the different erratic changes to the weather. Every few seconds, the clouds in the sky rapidly changed or disappeared, allowing a different weather to replace the other. "I've never seen such sporadic weather change like this before. It's like the world can't decide what kind of day it's meant to be!"

"Twilight!" Cadence flew down from the balcony of the castle towards Twilight when she was suddenly struck by a bolt of lightning. "GAH!"

"Cadence!" Twilight ran over towards the thunderstruck alicorn and caught her before she could collide with the crystalline roads. "Are you alright?"

"Y-yeah. I'm fine." Cadence stood back up and brushed her feathers. "Did somepony catch the number of that wagon?"

"Is this Cadence, Twilight?" Whisper asked as he watched her help her sister-in-law back onto her hooves. "In all the years that I've been a Yo-kai butler, I've never seen someone quite as ravishing as she is." He waved his hand over his face, and all of a sudden, he became handsome. "May I ask our lovely princess out on a date later, Twilight?"

"Fat chance of that happening, Whisper." Twilight shook her head. "She's married and has a daughter. Sorry to say this, but she's taken."

Whisper's heart shattered like glass as his original face returned. "Oh... I see how it is." He hung his head. "Twas now meant to be, was it? Oh, no-one will ever want to marry such a gorgeous and dashing butler such as myself! Oh, the yo-manity!"

"C'mon, Whisper, I'm sure that there's a Yo-kai out there waiting for you." Twilight gave him a calming smile. "You've just gotta find her, as she has to find you too."

"Whisper?" Cadence asked, looking at Twilight. "Who are you talking to?" She then looked down at the Yo-kai Watch on Twilight's hoof. "And what's that little thing on your arm? I didn't know you were a fan of watches, Twilight."

"This isn't just any ordinary watch, Cadence," Twilight began. "This is a magical watch known as the Yo-kai Watch. It has a built-in ultraviolet light that detects invisible creatures known as Yo-kai, which we can then talk to, fight, and even befriend."

"Befriend?" Cadence raised a brow. "Are these Yo-kai things dangerous?"

"Not all of them." Twilight shook her head. "There are some big, nasty Yo-kai known as Boss Yo-kai. They can't be befriended and exist only to cause pain and suffering to others. You can't miss them. They're the only Yo-kai that are the size of a house or with greater power than usual."

"I get the feeling that you've got a lot to tell me, haven't you?" Cadence raised a brow as she walked with Twilight towards the castle, through the howling wind, rain, and snow. "But first, we should take shelter! The weather's getting worse!" She had to raised her voice as the weather slammed against her.

"Rain, snow, wind, sun, rain, sun, wind and rain, it's all too much to take in!" Whisper had difficulty flying against the heavy winds. He had to push his arms out to move against the weather. "Aren't there some ponies that should be dealing with this?!"

"We'll discuss that later, Whisper!" Twilight shouted, getting close to the castle's doors. "Right now, we've just gotta get inside!"

Cadence, Twilight, Whisper, and Jibanyan continued to battle against the hostile forces of nature. Groaning and grunting, the four of them soldiered on against the will of the wind and past the Crystal Heart to arrive at the castle door. Jibanyan got blown away by the weather, but Twilight was able to catch him with her magic before she opened the door and got everyone inside. Once they were out of the weather, she closed the door as quickly as she could.

"Phew..." Twilight brushed her forehead with her hoof. "I wasn't expecting it to pick up like that."

"What do you think could be causing this?" Cadence asked, trotting up the stairs towards the castle's corridors. "Could Sombra be trying to make a return?"

"I highly doubt it. The Crystal Heart is still active, remember?" She pointed back towards the door. "As long as it's there, King Sombra cannot resurrect, nor can the frozen winds of the north strike the empire. My best bet is that there are Yo-kai causing the weather to change."

"Right now, we could be experiencing a full-scale attack from Drizzles and Alhails, but given how there's also sun involved in this wacky weather changing crisis, there might be even more Yo-kai here than I thought." Whisper looked at his Yo-kai Pad and went through the images, swiping them away by gliding his finger over the screen. "No problem, though. I'm sure that the ever-capable Princess Twilight Sparkle will be able to handle this, right?"

"Of course, Whisper." Twilight looked at him as they made it to the top of the stairs. "I'd be glad to help the empire get over the weather issues."

"Pardon me, miss? Are you the one with the famed Yo-kai Watch?"

"Huh? Who's there?" Twilight's head jolted as she looked down the corridors and all around her. No matter where she looked, she couldn't see the person who spoke to her.

"I'm right here." He said. "Just point your Yo-kai Watch at me and this'll be much less awkward."

"Oookay?" Twilight flipped up the lens of her Yo-kai Watch and pointed it towards the direction of the voice. The twelve segments lit up and with another blast of smoke, a new Yo-kai appeared before Cadence and Twilight.

Before them stood a Yo-kai with a head that looked identical to that of a sun, with seven points sticking outward. He wore a white tuxedo with a yellow carnation in the collar, had brown shoes, and wore a cloudy veil around his wrists that slung down around his back.

"Who are you?" Cadence asked, approaching the Yo-kai.

"My name is Ray O' Light." He bowed before the two of them. "I am a Yo-kai capable of bringing a sunny day wherever and whenever possible. No matter how harsh the weather might be, just summon me, and the sun will clear it all away."

"A Yo-kai responsible for sunlight?" Twilight smiled and examined Ray O' Light. "Interesting. I thought that only pegasi were capable of making days clear and sunny, but here you are."

"Yes. Though, I am in a bit of a predicament here." He looked out towards the window down on the sunlight-covered Crystal Empire. "You see, my bride-to-be, Drizzelda was taken away from me by some horrible Yo-kai capable of controlling rain and snow. I've been scouring this place trying to find her, but I've had no such luck."

"Rain and snow... It's DEFINITELY Alhails and Drizzles." Whisper showed Twilight pictures of two similar Yo-kai. They both looked like massive piles of slush with red and yellow eyes, but one was blue and was accompanied by rainclouds, while the other was followed by snowfall. "Drizzle, much like Ray O'Light's bride, Drizzelda, can control rain. Maybe he stole her because he was feeling jealous?"

"I suppose that makes sense. Why have two rain-causing Yo-kai when you could have only one?" Twilight said. "Drizzle must be doing this out of jealousy. But, then why would he want to partner up with Alhail to snatch Drizzelda?"

"Perhaps he's simply trying to marry her himself. But I won't allow it!" Ray O' Light put his hand to his chest. "I swear that I will make it my duty to save my love from that dastardly pair, Drizzle and Alhail!" He looked down at Twilight and Cadence. "Can you two help me out with this, ladies? I promise that I'll make it worth your while."

"Yes. As a Princess of Friendship, it would be cruel of me to leave two lovebirds separated." Twilight readied her watch. "We'll take on Drizzle and Alhail together!"

"As someone who's had their wedding disrupted by an evil force before, I know what you're going through, Ray O' Light." Cadence nodded and walked up to him. She wrapped her hoof around his shoulders. "I'd like to offer my help as well. And when we're done, I could personally wed the two of you myself."

"Thank you ever so much, ladies." Ray O' Light smiled and took their hooves. "Come! We must hurry before Drizzelda's forced to marry that slushy brute, Drizzle!" He began to run towards the door with Twilight and Cadence close behind him.

The two ponies ran with the Yo-kai back out the way they came and through the weather. No matter how strong the rain, snow, and wind was, Ray O' Light's very presence caused a sunspot to appear around the three of them, protecting them from the harsh weather conditions.

"This must be the place." Ray O' Light stopped at a market that was now completely swamped with rain and snowfall. It was far heavier than the rest of the town and was even accompanied with a few thunderbolts streaking down from the sky. "The weather here is absolutely foul. Drizzelda's here somewhere, I can just feel it!"

"Time for the Yo-kai Watch." Twilight used the lens and looked through it. She pointed towards the clearest part of the market, causing the twelve segments of her watch to light up and cause three smoke explosions to appear before her eyes.

Drizzle and Alhail were tightly holding onto a female Yo-kai with a massive puddle by her feet. She wore an umbrella atop her head that was missing a few segments and had long black hair with a plain grey dress. She was thrashing about in the two other Yo-kai's grips as she tried to break free. However much she tried, though, the Yo-kai were holding onto her incredibly tight.

"Soon, my wife Drizzelda, you will marry me and not that stupid sunburn, Ray!" Drizzle tugged on Drizzelda's right arm. "Two rain Yo-kai are meant to be together! Not a rain and sun Yo-kai!"

"Ngggh! Somebody help me!" Drizzelda yelled, trying to get free of Drizzle and Alhail's grips.

"Drizzelda! My darling!" Ray O' Light ran forward and confronted the two slush Yo-kai. "Release her, you vile fiends!"

"Back off, sunstain!" Alhail breathed on Ray O' Light, causing a hailstorm to slam into his face and knock him backwards. "Drizzle and Drizzelda were meant to be together! I will ensure that my partner has his wedding!"

"Twilight. There's no reasoning with them." Whisper pulled out Twilight's Yo-kai Medallium. "You know what must be done."

"I understand." Twilight reached into her Yo-kai Medallium and pulled out a medal before giving the book back to Whisper. "Let's brighten up Ray's day."

"Ray! Get out of here!" Drizzelda called. "The weather's getting too strong!"

"No, Drizzelda! I'm not leaving you again!" Ray O' Light defiantly stood proud before Drizzle and Alhail. "These horrible Yo-kai that stole you away shall feel the full force of my sunshine powers!"

"You don't understand, Ray! Me being with Drizzle is causing the rainfall to get stronger by the second!" Drizzelda cried out. "What should be a simple rainstorm is turning into a monsoon! You have to run before you get completely overwhelmed!"

"Come on out, my Yo-kai friend! Calling Gargaros!" Twilight tossed the medal skyward and caught it with her magic. "Yo-kai Medal! Do your thing!" She rammed it into the slot.

"SUMMONING: TOUGH!" The Yo-kai Watch declared as Gargaros began to take shape before the Yo-kai.

Gruff stuff!
Rough bluff!
Red ban, jacket stand, bling-blang
TOUGH!

"Gargaros!" He roared skyward, brandishing his spiked club.

"An Oni, eh?" Drizzle smirked as he thrust his free hand towards Gargaros, swamping him with a rainy tornado. "Guess it's time to see just how strong the Drizzle-Drizzelda combo really is!"

"Ngggh! What power!" Gargaros used his spiked club to defend himself from the rain. "I've never had such a problem with weather before!"

"Ahah! Perhaps you need my help!" Ray O' Light raised his hands high, causing the storm around Gargaros to turn into a sunny day. "Now then, shall we deal with these monsters together?"

"Yes. Let's do this, guys!" Twilight thrust her hoof towards Drizzle and Alhail. "Attack!"

"Gladly." Gargaros smirked and ran towards Drizzle and Alhail with his club raised high. He slammed it right down onto Drizzle, turning him into a large puddle.

"Prepare yourself, Alhail." Ray O' Light clapped his hands together and shot fire out of both of them. "The forecast today calls for sun!"

"Graagh!" Alhail was struck by Ray O' Light's attack and began to melt. "Pesky fire attacks..."

"Drizzelda's MINE!" Drizzle roared and reformed himself. He clapped his hands, causing the rainfall to get even heavier. "Waterfall!" He raised his hands high, causing a massive torrent of water to soak Twilight, Cadence, Gargaros, and Ray O' Light. A bolt of lightning struck the water too, sending electricity through the bodies of all of them.

"Clever. But not good enough!" Gargaros shrugged off the attack and stomped on Drizzle, once more turning him into a puddle

"Just you wait, Drizzelda. I'll save you shortly." Ray O' Light ran towards Alhail and gave him a flip kick and another fire attack. "Take this, you cretin! Blaze!" He said as he shot fire once more from his hands.

"Enough of this! It's time for the finishing move!" Drizzle gathered energy for his Soultimate attack. "Alhail! You too! Let's really give them a storm to fight!"

Alhail nodded in compliance and took in energy as well. Together, the two of them charged their attacks, causing the weather behind them to get even more heavy, to the point where there was nothing but rain and snow instead of the market. The rain and snow was so strong that it completely concealed Drizzle and Alhail and made them invisible.

"HEAVY SQUALL!" Drizzle roared.

"HEAVENLY HAIL!" Alhail added.

The two Yo-kai punched forward with their fists, sending the entire storm in the direction of Cadence, Twilight, and the Yo-kai. It was so powerful that to them, it felt like they were getting hit by a tidal wave of ice-cold water and snow instead of simply being caught up in a rainstorm. The torrent was so powerful that it swept everyone off of their feet and even sent a few buildings flying into the distance. All of them crashed into the castle and fell to the ground when it eventually died down.

"Urrgghhh... Why doesn't the Crystal Empire have a weather team of their own?" Twilight asked with her eyes swirling from the impact. She stuck her tongue out and fainted.

"Now you've got my attention." Gargaros stood up and picked his club off of the ground. He swung it around and charged at Drizzle and Alhail roaring at the top of his voice, "NIGHTMARE BEAT!" Leaping high into the air, he brought his club down on Drizzle, erasing him from the face of the Crystal Empire permanently.

"Drizzelda. No amount of rain and snow will keep me from loving you!" Ray O' Light gathered his own Soultimate energy and ran towards Alhail as fast as he could, throwing his arms back him. "SUNNY SHINY FLARE!" He jumped as high as he could as well, raising his hands skyward.

The storm that Alhail and Drizzle commanded had been completely destroyed by a blast of golden energy from Ray O' Light. Intense heat from the sun pounded down on Alhail, causing him to melt and turn into water. With a final somersault, Ray O' Light landed on top of Alhail's watery remains and splashed some small drops of water onto Drizzelda.

The second that Alhail disappeared back to the Yo-kai World, the weather returned to normal. The rain and snow had been completely removed and the winds had died down to a simple summer's breeze.

"Ray... You did it!" Drizzelda gave him a smile as he helped her stand back up on her own two feet. "You've saved me!"

"Of course, my darling." Ray O' Light gave Drizzelda a small hug and looked her in the eyes. "I would never let anything bad happen to you. And no matter what the weather, the two of us were meant to be together."

"Oh, Ray!" Drizzelda threw herself into a hug and wept into Ray O' Light's shoulders. "I'd never let anything happen to you, either!"

Twilight's legs wobbled as she got back onto her feet. Her head was still spinning from Alhail and Drizzle's Soultimates. She shook her head to re-orient herself and found that everything had returned to normal.

"That was a good fight." Gargaros came back up to Twilight with a smile on his face. "For such tiny Yo-kai, Alhail and Drizzle had really good co-operation. Made me break a sweat."

"You did a good job in dealing with them, Gargaros." Twilight nodded and took his medal out of the Yo-kai Watch. "That'll be all for now. You can return home."

"Very well." He bowed before her. "It was an honour being able to fight such strong Yo-kai under your command." Then, he disappeared back to his home.

"I'm just glad that that's over." Cadence got back onto her feet as well, brushing off all of the rain and snow that had fallen onto her wings. "Now the Crystal Empire's weather should begin to stabilize." As soon as she finished speaking, rain began to fall behind Drizzelda. "Or not."

"No. It's perfectly fine, Cadence." Twilight looked at Ray O' Light and Drizzelda. "Drizzle was amplifying his own powers with Drizzelda's. Now that he and Alhail are gone, the rain's gone back to a more non-lethal state."

"Indeed." Whisper nodded. "Having two rain Yo-kai together would be chaos on a massive scale. Drizzle was going to risk everything just for love."

"He's not the only one. Ray O' Light was willing to throw himself right into the thick of it just to save Drizzelda." Twilight smiled at the two Yo-kai reuniting with one another. "Now that's some devotion."

"Twilight, I can't thank you enough for rescuing Drizzelda." Ray O' Light came up to her and Cadence. "As a reward for saving my beloved, I think it only fitting that you deserve some form of medal." He reached into his pockets and pulled out a Yo-kai Medal, giving it to Twilight immediately.

"Oh! I think I deserve to spread my thanks as well." Drizzelda gave Twilight her own Yo-kai Medal. "Any friend of Ray's is a friend of mine."

"Thank you. Both of you." Twilight took both medals and put them into her Yo-kai Medallium.

"I may not know about Yo-kai weddings, but I'd be glad to help you two get wed right now." Cadence approached Ray O' Light and Drizzelda. "As the Princess of Love, I'll take up the honour of marrying you two right on this spot." With a powerful flash of light from her horn, Cadence generated an altar with flowers hanging around it, and lots of chairs for an audience to occupy

"Whoa." Twilight looked at what Cadence had pulled off with a single spell. "You've been practising, haven't you?"

"You could say that." Cadence gave Twilight a smile. "Now then, I think we need some guests for this wedding of ours."

"I know just who to call..." Twilight opened up her medallium once again.

Eventually, Twilight and her friends had set up everything for the perfect wedding. She had filled up all of the seats with her Yo-kai friends, other townsponies, and even a few Yo-kai that she had never even seen before. All friends of everyone involved with her, Cadence, Ray O' Light, and Drizzelda.

Whisper was the ring-bearer for the occasion while Jibanyan threw flower petals down the aisle with Drizzelda following close behind him. Twilight had the position of best mare while Cadence was the one who would speak the vows for both of them.

Using her magic, Twilight had been able to briefly extend the Yo-kai Watch's power so that even the ponies could see what was going on. It took her a great deal of concentration to maintain, but once she got the spell just right, she was casting it with ease.

"Dearly beloved," Cadence began. "We are gathered here today in the Crystal Empire to join these two Yo-kai, Ray O' Light, and Drizzelda, together in holy matrimony." She motioned to Whisper to bring the rings over to her. "This is a special kind of union that's only seen once in a generation. When two common souls come together and share their love for one another, it is truly a wonderful sight to behold.

"Ray O' Light. Do you take Drizzelda to be your lawfully wedded wife?" Cadence asked.

"I do." Ray O' Light bowed before Drizzelda, producing a bouqet of flowers.

"And do you, Drizzelda, take Ray O' Light to be your lawfully wedded husband?" Cadence turned towards Drizzelda, who had a slight tear in her eyes.

"Yes! Yes! A thousand times yes!" She exclaimed and gave Ray O' Light a massive hug.

"then by the power vested in me as the Princess of Love, I hereby prononuce you two man and wife." Cadence slipped the rings on both Ray O' Light and Drizzelda's fingers. "You may kiss the bride."

Ray O' Light and Drizzelda immediately kissed one another, causing an uproar of cheering from the crowd.

"I'm so happy for them." Twilight shed a small tear herself at Ray O' Light and Drizzelda's marriage. "I promised myself that I wouldn't cry, so why am I?"

"Marriage is a complex thing, Twilight." Whisper floated over to her. "It's so moving and yet so saddening. As two noble souls become one, we can only imagine on where their adventures will take them in the future."

"Maybe you nyeed to get married too, Twilight!" Jibanyan walked up to her. "We knyow who you love nyow, thanks to Tattletell, so maybe we could set up a few dates with—"

"No, you two. I'm fine." Twilight brushed Whisper and Jibanyan's hair with her hoof. "Let's not ruin the moment right now. We're witnessing a real Yo-kai wedding." And with that, she watched on as Ray O' Light and Drizzelda walked down the aisle together with their arms linked together.

"Yeah. You're right. It's better to save those thoughts for another day." Whisper nodded. "After all, a true relationship takes time to blossom."

"Someday, you'll get married yourself, Twilight!" Jibanyan jumped up. "I'd love to throw flowers for you someday!"

"And I would be more than happy to be the ring-bearer once more." Whisper bowed.

"Guys! Stop!" Twilight tried to get Whisper and Jibanyan to think about something else, but it was all lost in a conversation about flowers, cake, and the perfect groom. Letting out a groan, Twilight hung her head.

Author's Notes:

So, I finally managed to get my hands on Yo-kai Watch 2: Bony Spirits! Yay!

I'm doing well so far. I've befriended a fairly decent amount of Yo-kai in the first parts of the game. I haven't even gotten the Model Zero yet, either. Also, you wouldn't believe that I own a Lie-in-Heart and a Siro before I've even met Hovernyan, but it's true.

Anyway, as always, leave comments, thumbs up, favourites, share it with your friends, anything to do with this story. I'd love to hear it.
