Chapter 26: Yo-kai Training

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

"Pardon me, Twilight, but whatever is this?" Whisper looked at what Twilight had built. Various different punching bags, training equipment, and obstacles for a makeshift course covered the field. "It all looks like a mess."

"This, Whisper, is a Yo-kai training ground." Twilight approached Whisper. She wore a black and white striped shirt with a cap of the same colour, with a red whistle hanging around her neck. She had a clipboard held up in her magic with pictures of all of the Yo-kai she had befriended so far. "Ever since King Void decided to rear his ugly head in both Equestria and the human world, I decided that it's time that my Yo-kai got a bit of a workout."

"Doesn't this seem like too much?" Whisper looked at all of the equipment. "And on another unrelated topic, how in the world did you afford all of this? It's like you practically have your own fitness gym at this point!"

"Whisper. You can't skimp on training." Twilight raised a brow. "This course is designed to test the strength of my Yo-kai and make them stronger. Have them face tougher and tougher obstacles in preparation for when King Void decides to attack. "Didn't your last master ever try this with his own Yo-kai?"

"No. But at the same time, Nate was more into discovering and befriending Yo-kai, not training them rigorously to prepare for regicide." Whisper shrugged and watched Twilight retrieve the Yo-kai Medallium. "He also wasn't faced with something like a king before. Either an evil dame, a maniacal squid man, or a deluded godfather."

"Sounds like this Nate had some crazy adventures with the Yo-kai Watch." Twilight looked into the sky. "I really should meet him someday."

"I'm sure he's keeping well in the human world with his friends." Whisper nodded.

"Anyway, let's get onto training." Twilight put her each of her Yo-kai Medals into the watch one at a time, bringing out all of the Yo-kai friends that she had befriended on her travels. Everyone from each rank that she had met so far was now on the training ground, looking at her.

After she had everyone, she found Jibanyan's medal last in the book. "And last but not least, we have Jibanyan!" Twilight threw the medal skyward. "Yo-kai Medal! Do your thing!" She rammed the medal into the slot.

"SUMMONING: CHARMING!" The watch declared and fired off the pink beams of light.

Alarming!
Boom, boom! Walla walla, dance, dance
Charming!

"Jibanyan!" He somersaulted and landed before Twilight.

"Looks like everyone's here." Twilight smiled and ticked off the Yo-kai that she had befriended on a register. After she marked every box she turned the paper over to show the training regimen. "Now, let's get you all started."

"Started for what?" Roughraff raised a brow.

"We're running this course to make you Yo-kai stronger and stronger so that we can fight better enemies." Twilight showed them all the obstacles, training areas, and equipment that she had gathered. "This will test your speed, strength, endurance, and many other things. Best case scenario, you'll get so strong that it'll take mere seconds to beat Boss Yo-kai."

"Exercise?" Cutta-nah looked at all of the different parts of the track and let out a small yawn. "Not my type, bro."

"Yeah. I D'wanna do that." D'wanna stretched his arms high and bent his neck, hearing his bones crack. "I'd much rather sit here."

"And just what are you going to accomplish by sitting on your flank and doing nothing?!" Twilight immediately ran over to D'wanna and Cutta-nah and threw away her calm attitude. "Do you want Boss Yo-kai running all over you like you two are stairs?!"

"No! Of course not, dude!" Cutta-nah threw his arms out.

"Then get off of your lazy butts and run that course ten times without stopping. You don't get to rest until you do!" Twilight thrust her hoof and used her magic to place the two of them at the start of the course.

"Alright, alright, jeez!" D'wanna picked up his coat and started running with his stumpy feet. Cutta-nah stood up and started the course as well.

"And the rest of you! Run the course too. Ten laps, then you'll get to rest!" Twilight blew into her whistle as loud as she could, getting the other Yo-kai to stampede past her and begin the course. "I don't want to see any of you struggling because it's too hard! I wanna see you lift up your legs and run like your life depends on it!"

Whisper was about to fly off himself until Twilight raised a hoof to stop him.

"Not you, Whisper. I want you to help me out in keeping these Yo-kai in check." Twilight looked down at her papers. "I don't want any of them slouching until their training is done, got it?"

"Twilight, might I say that you're acting an awful lot like Sgt. Burly right now?" Whisper tapped on his shoulders. "I've never seen you go from zero to drill sergeant like that."

"King Void is approaching, and I don't want to be liable for any damage that my Yo-kai suffer because of his malice." Twilight looked at Whisper and banged her chest with her left hoof. "I do genuinely care about them, but in their current state, it's like a bunch of teenagers fighting against a five-hundred foot tall giant." She then looked back at the course. "Dimmy! Climb faster!"

"But still, don't you think that this is a bit too much for them?" Whisper dug into his body and gave Twilight a bunch of orange orbs with a red center. "You could always just use these Exporbs to make them stronger, you know. It's the alternative for Yo-kai that either aren't battling, don't like fighting, or are just plain lazy."

"Whisper, this isn't some cheesy arcade game where you can just level up your teammates by giving them consumable EXP items." Twilight put the Exporbs back in Whisper's body, unaware that he glowed once they had been put back. "This is the real world. And in this real world, we train vigorously to strengthen our muscles, move faster, do more impossible things, and save the world from destruction."

"I know, I know. It still doesn't help to try it out, though." Whisper looked at all of the Yo-kai and flew over to one who was falling behind the others. He pulled out a yellow megaphone and spoke into it. "Noway! Move! Do you want Twilight to be angry with you?!"

"No way!" He shot back.

"Then pick up your knees and go faster!" He pointed to the next part of the course. "This is the only way you'll become an Impass, you know!"

"Roughraff! Punch that training dummy!" Twilight barked.

"No need to tell me twice!" He shot back and dealt a combination of left and right hooks before giving the training dummy a powerful kick, shattering the wood into splinters.

"Fight! Push harder! Run the course again! Faster!" Twilight shouted various different orders, stomping hard on the ground as she watched her Yo-kai begin to sweat. She herself was getting red in the face and her mane and tail got moist. "Do you want King Void to defeat you in battle?!"

"NO!" The Yo-kai shouted as they continued their training.

"Then stop walking and get to running!"

Twilight had been cut off by a newcomer. He had orange skin, a single horn, and long curly eyebrows. He wore orange gloves without the finger holes and a green vest and loincloth combo. Both of his knees were bent and his muscles were incredibly huge.

"Uh, hello?" Twilight looked around for the person who said that, but didn't even realise that he was right behind her.

"You too, little missy. On that course!" The man kicked Twilight hard in the flank and she face-planted right at the start of the course that she had set up.

"Excuse me, but I'll have you know that I'm running this course, and you have no right to take over for—" she couldn't even see who had kicked her away when she pulled her head up from the dirt "—me..."

"Well, this is a surprise." Whisper looked over at the person. "I didn't expect to see you here. Especially not when she's still on her D rank."

"See who here?" Twilight looked around once again. "If it's another Yo-kai, my watch would've been able to pick it up by now."

"It is another Yo-kai, but it's far too high a rank for you to see right now." Whisper reached into his belly and retrieved a pair of glasses with a rainbow-coloured frame. "Here. Try these on." He slipped them down over Twilight's eyes, revealing the Yo-kai that had kicked her onto the course.

"What the heck is that thing?!" Twilight looked at the orange Yo-kai.

"That is Sgt. Burly." Whisper pointed him out. "In the Yo-kai World, he's the ultimate fitness instructor. He encourages others to get stronger and stronger through lots and lots of exercise, stretches, and other such things." He nodded, watching Sgt. Burly oversee the other Yo-kai. "He can sometimes appear in Terror Time, but unlike Gargaros, Ogralus, and Orcanos, he wants you to get stronger by standing up to your fears, instead of running away from them."

"A sergeant?!" Twilight gulped and tugged at her collar.

"Something the matter?" Whisper asked.

"No." Twilight took some deep breaths and flicked at the air with her hoof. "I just didn't think that there were sergeants in the Yo-kai World. I thought it was all crazy creatures who just like causing mischief."

"Well, then you thought wrong." Sgt. Burly approached Twilight. "Yo-kai aren't just known for causing chaos. Some of them are very strict on keeping everyone in order." He slammed his left fist into his right hand. "Just for that little remark, I want to see you do twenty-five laps of this course without using those wings of yours!"

"Seriously?!" Twilight lurched back.

"NOW!" Burly thrust his right arm out, and Twilight dashed off down the course.

For the next hour, Twilight Sparkle was training alongside the very Yo-kai that she wanted to make stronger herself. Sgt. Burly had hijacked her entire regime and made it his own and the more she tried to fight against it, the harder that her own workout got. She eventually gritted her teeth and brushed away the sweat as she did the course for the one-thousandth time that day, nearly collapsing when she made it to the end without her wings or horn.

"Keep moving, horsey!" Sgt. Burly called out as Twilight fell to her knees. "I don't want to see you rest until those flabby legs of yours are as ripped as my biceps!"

"This is too much!" Twilight whined as she slinked back to the start of the course.

"Aww. Does the widdle baby need me to change her diaper?" Burly taunted as Twilight brushed away the waters in her eyes and on her head. "MOVE IT!"

"I swear, I am so close to punching that Yo-kai right in the face..." Twilight gnashed her teeth and ran the course once more under Burly's private watch.

When Twilight continued the course, Burly went back to the rest of the Yo-kai and pulled out some exercise mats. He gave one to each of the Yo-kai with feet before he went back to his original position. Burly went on to perform a sequence of rhythmic exercises that were much easier than what Twilight had been doing.

"Hey!" Twilight groaned as she got to the end of the course once again. "How come they get the easier stuff and I don't?"

"Because you don't know jack about the Yo-kai traditions, horse." Burly crossed his arms. "That's why you're getting another hundred laps, and these Yo-kai are getting my personal workout. NOW LET'S KEEP GOING!"

"Alright, that's it!" Twilight teleported behind Sgt. Burly and shot a powerful blast of magic at his back, sending him flying straight into the course, causing it to collapse on him. "As the Princess of Friendship, I am issuing you with a warning, Sgt. Burly. Leave this world now, or I'll have to use force!"

"Alright then. Guess there's no other way to teach you..." Sgt. Burly climbed out of the wreckage and ran up to Twilight. "You want to get stronger, widdle baby? Then come at me! No Yo-kai allowed! Prove you're strong enough to defeat me!" He kicked Twilight, who put up a forcefield. His kick was so powerful that it broke through the shield and sent Twilight flying against a tree.

Twilight snarled and teleported behind Burly, firing off a powerful spell. She would've hit him if not for him bending down to avoid the spell. He gave Twilight a pony-like kick and shot her off towards the rubble of the now destroyed fitness course.

"Stubborn Yo-kai, isn't he?" Twilight brushed off some of the dirt that she had accrued and flapped her wings high into the air. She circled around Burly and fired spells down on him. This time, they hit him square on the chest, but he took each and every strike like it did nothing to him.

"C'mon! Is that really all you got?!" Burly demanded. "Flap those wings harder and harder like a soaring eagle, NOT A CHICKEN!"

"CHICKEN?!" Twilight fumed and deluged Burly with more and more spells. Her emotional state caused her spells to get even stronger and begin to push him back by a few paces. "YOU'RE THE JERK WHO STOLE MY TRAINING REGIMEN FROM ME!"

Whisper pulled out a tub of popcorn and covered it with salt and butter before allowing the other Yo-kai to gather around as they watched Burly and Twilight fight.

"Cast those spells harder! Like you're facing the final boss of an arcade game!" Burly picked up a piece of the earth and threw it at Twilight, who countered with another blast. He pulled out even more and watched her began to struggle trying to shoot them down. "I can do this all day, you know!"

"Is that all?! Give me a challenge!" Twilight warped underneath Burly and shot up at his butt, sending him high into the air. She flew out of the way and saw him land on his feet.

"Grraaggh!" Burly clapped his hands, causing bolts of lightning to strike Twilight's back as she took to the sky once again. In seconds, the alicorn was grounded just long enough for him to run over and deliver a strong punch to her face.

Twilight had trouble getting up after Burly's last attack. Her legs were as shaky as jelly and she felt like she was bruised all over. Even trying to concentrate to use a spell was a chore now due to the damage she had taken.

"You want some advice little baby horsey? Take that pain and turn it into fighting spirit!" Burly began to take in energy for his Soultimate. "Let the attacks from your enemies make you stronger! Let every bruise, cut, and scar educate you on your enemies battle tactics! Turn your injuries into energy and use it to fight back!" He threw his arms out and glowed an extremely bright shade of orange. "VICTORIAAAAN!"

"He's... right." Twilight was still shook up from the attacks, but she managed to get back onto her feet. She watched as Burly ripped a tree from the ground and swung it around like a baseball bat. "I can't just accept defeat. I need to keep fighting! How am I meant to stop King Void if I can't beat Sgt. Burly?"

Burly came in with the tree and was about to strike Twilight down when she teleported out of the way and kicked him in the eyes. This time, he reeled with her strike, and she hit the other one with her magic. Burly was blinded and could only recover as Twilight flew towards his face and kicked it as hard as she could, sending him flying back to the ruins of the course.

"Now's the time that I kick it up a notch!" Twilight rained down bolt after bolt on top of Burly, dealing him a great deal of damage. With every spell she cast, her breathing got heavier and heavier. She wanted Burly to be defeated, to prove that she could defeat King Void. "I won't stop fighting! Not now, not ever! And if you want to get in my way, then I'll just have to tear you down as well!"

Twilight gathered her energy and created a massive globe of alicorn magic. She threw her hooves down and screamed, "I WIN!" sending the ball crashing down on Sgt. Burly, enveloping him in light and leaving a massive crater where the fitness course used to be.

"Nnngh..." Burly climbed out of the rubble and flopped down onto his chest, stars in his eyes as he stuck his tongue out.

"Whoa." Whisper flew over to Sgt. Burly, checking his pulse after Twilight's barrage of attacks. "I say, Twilight. I've never seen anything like that before. You took on Sgt. Burly and actually won? He equates to the same level of power and strength as Gargaros!"

"Nyeah! He's really, really, REALLY strong and you managed to beat him?" Jibanyan ran over and helped Burly get back onto his feet with great difficulty. "That mean King Void doesn't stand a chance now!"

"Gotta hand it to you there, horse." Burly shook his head and got back onto his feet. "I've never met a human or pony with the guts to fight me, let alone win."

"I was just protecting my friends." Twilight lowered her brows and glared at him. "You stole my workout regime, treated me like I was in the army, and worst of all, you almost brought the fight to Ponyville, endangering lots and lots of citizens. I was so close to killing you, y'know."

"But you can't kill a Yo-kai." Whisper wagged his finger at Twilight. "They're already dead, you know."

"Well, I can't help it if the world is full of weaklings." Sgt. Burly crossed his arms and sat down. "If people don't work out, they get fat and lazy, unable to do their work and just end up hurting themselves. That's where I come in. To help get their lives back on track and to make the weak strong, so that they can face any adversity. I'm not like your Terror Time Oni, who only wants to be a bully for the sake of scaring the pants off of them."

"Well, I would punish you, but I am in dire need of some help." Twilight Sparkle nodded. "King Void has had two lieutenants of his attack both this world and the human world. Felycan and the Puppet Brothers. We need all of the help we can get if we're going to defeat him."

"Believe me, I know." Burly put his hand on Twilight's shoulders. "The queen, her right hand man, and even the two gatekeepers are having trouble fending off King Void's army. Forget about Dame Dedtime and her Wicked Yo-kai, King Void's Dark Yo-kai are putting them all to shame with their intent to hurt, kill, and destroy."

"Dark Yo-kai?" Everyone else parroted.

"I'll explain more later, but right now, I believe that Twilight needs this." Burly reached into his pants and pulled out a Yo-kai Medal. "A medal not just to show that we're allies, but also for standing up to and defeating me in battle."

"Uhh... Okay?" Twilight took the medal and slipped it into her Yo-kai Medallium.

"Now, shall we get back to our training?" Whisper asked. "There's still plenty of time to burn, and we need to get stronger before facing King Void."

"Whisper? I can't move again!" Twilight tried moving her hooves, but they wouldn't budge.

"Oh boy..." Burly looked at Twilight's watch.

The Yo-kai Watch counted down from three to one, projecting the big red numbers as a massive drumbeat played. Once it hit zero, the picture changed to show Garagos's face on the watch. It was Terror Time once again.

Author's Notes:

I pre-ordered Yo-kai Watch 2 from Amazon UK just yesterday. The scheduled release date is between the 29th of October and the 9th of November. I'll inform you all in a blog post when it comes and maybe even do a let's play of it. And truth be told, I can't wait for this. Dame Dedtime and the Wicked Yo-kai will fall before my hands, just as Mckraken and his albino Yo-kai did in the first game.

Also, I just want to ask you all this. Have I written Sgt. Burly properly? I've not seen the anime, and I've only gathered snippets of info from Yo-kai Watch 2 and Busters. And even then, that's not enough to get a full characterisation of him. If I haven't, then be sure to let me know.

Next Chapter: Terror Time Again Estimated time remaining: 7 Hours, 48 Minutes
