Chapter 18: Yo-kai Fusion

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

"Whisper?" Twilight pulled her head frmo the Yo-kai Medallium and looked him in the eyes. "Can I ask you something?"

"Sure. Anything you want to know, Twilight." Whisper bowed before Twilight. "I am your butler, after all. It's my duty to serve."

"You mentioned something about Yo-kai Fusion a few days ago, right?" Twilight looked at the empty spots in the book again, rubbing her throat at what could fill them up. "What did you mean by that?"

"Well, when there are two Yo-kai who fill the criteria, then they can be fused together to make an even stronger Yo-kai." Whisper pointed at some of the empty pages of the book. "This transformation is known as Yo-kai Fusion, and can be triggered whenever you have two Yo-kai that go together.

"The Yo-kai that you create from fusion will immediately hand you their Yo-kai Medal and be at your beck and call whenever you feel the need to bring them out." Whisper nodded. "But if you want to use any of the two Yo-kai that made the fusion in the first place, then you still retain the old medals, so don't worry about this whole fusion thing being permanent."

"I see." Twilight nodded. "So by combining two regular Yo-kai, I can create a super-powerful one to fight in their place. Quite handy, especially considering how much hassle Felycan was back in Town Hall."

"But be careful, Twilight. It's not just any two Yo-kai that go together." Whisper wagged his finger. "They have to be very specific Yo-kai in order to fuse. You can't just throw together two rocks and see if you make something new out of it, after all."

"So... you and Jibanyan don't go together, I'm guessing?" Twilight raised a brow.

"U-uh... w-well..." Whisper began to sweat and rub the back of his forehead. "About that..."

"No way." A massive grin plastered itself onto Twilight's face. "You and Jibanyan can fuse?!"

"Yes, but I'd rather not talk about it." Whisper shuddered as he remembered the time when he fused together with Jibanyan. "I mean, it was interesting, yes, but both me and Jibanyan were quite taken aback when it first happened."

"Nyeah." Jibanyan jumped onto Twilight's back. "Being Buchinyan was a bit shocking for us, and I felt really uncomfortable. I nyormally wouldn't want to do it again, but if you want us to fuse, then I guess we should."

"Whisper and Jibanyan fused into one Yo-kai? That I've gotta see." Twilight stood up and walked out of the room. "Follow me. I know the perfect place where we can fuse you two."

"This isn't going to be very pleasant..." Whisper gulped as he and Jibanyan followed Twilight out of her room.

"Tell me about it, Whisper." Jibanyan nodded as he slowly crawled out of the room.

Twilight Sparkle, Whisper, and Jibanyan walked into a room full of test tubes, beakers, electrical equipment, and research notes sprawled out across the tables. The sound of machines filled the silence as Twilight used her horn and cast spells on them, activating them and making them conduct electricity as the pistons pumped and the liquids bubbled.

"What is this?" Whisper looked around at all of the machinery and scientific equipment in the room. "Centrifuges? Distillers? A semi-functioning super-computer?"

"Yeah. This is what I tend to do in my spare time." Twilight blushed as she looked around at all of her machinery. "Science is an interesting subject, isn't it? Who would've guessed that machines and liquids would've been able to make such sufficient changes to Equestria?"

"I didn't even let the thought cross, Twilight," Whisper said. "I thought that Equestria was a world made up of magic, where you could solve problems easily if you had the right spell in order to do it..."

"Not every spell can be solved with magic, Whisper." Twilight looked into some drawers to find something. "Magic is only meant to be used as a last resort, and even then, there's no guaranteeing that it'll be a good last resort. Especially not in the other world, at least."

"Other world?" Whisper raised a brow at Twilight's response. "What do you mean by other world?"

"I'll have to show you someday, just as you'll have to show me to the Yo-kai World." Twilight jumbled and pushed away certain bits and pieces in each of the drawers. "Now where in the heck did I leave it... Is it here? No. Not there either. I can't this unorganized, can I? Hmm... Aha!" Twilight pulled out something that looked like the letter Y with electrical pylons.

"A good old fashioned gene splicer!" Twilight smiled as she held the device in the air. "With this little beauty, fusing the two of you should be a cinch!"

"I appreciate the effort, Twilight, but there's really no need." Whisper took Twilight's gene splicer and put it back away, tousling her mane. "Yo-kai simply have to touch together and combine their powers. In a similar manner, you have to take both of their Yo-kai Medals and put them together, one on top of the other."

"Nyeah! Try bringing out one of your other Yo-kai first, Twilight." Jibanyan nodded as he flipped the medallium to another page. "Why don't you start by fusing me with Coughkoff?"

"Coughkoff?" Twilight's head gently moved back as she looked at the medal for Coughkoff. "I didn't think you two would go together. I mean you're quite squishy and adorable, while he's more of a coughing nightmare."

"Still, it works." Jibanyan plucked the medal out and handed it over to Twilight. "Go on. Give it a shot, Twilight."

"Alright. Guess there's no real harm in trying, is there?" Twilight took Coughkoff's medal and closed up the book. "Come on out, my Yo-kai Friend! Calling Coughkoff!" She threw it skyward. "Yo-kai Medal! Do your thing!" And she shoved it into the slot.

"SUMMONING: EERIE!" The watch cried out as Coughkoff appeared before Twilight.

Lookie-lee, lookie-lee,
flippidy-dee!
Lookie-lee, lookie-lee,
Bubba Eerie!

"Coughkoff!" He called out, before letting a chesty cough fly.

"So, shall we get fusing?" Jibanyan smiled as he bounced off of Twilight's shoulders and next to Coughkoff.

"I suppose so." Twilight took Jibanyan's medal and put it on top of Coughkoff's.

The second she did so, a powerful light emanated from the Yo-Kai Watch, and both Jibanyan and Coughkoff began to glow the colours of their respective tribes. Magical tornadoes burst out of their bodies, grabbing them both and spiralling them around each other before they landed directly into the Yo-Kai Watch, causing another bright light to form.

"SUMMONING: CHARMING!" The watch declared as the two medals transformed into one brand new one. It let loose another bright pink blast, sending out a new Yo-kai.

Alarming!
Boom-boom, walla walla, dance, dance,
Charming!

"Thornyan!" A Yo-kai resembling Jibanyan appeared before Twilight. Its skin, instead of being red, was now bright green, and had lots of little thorns poking out of it. Before he could say anything else, though, he let out a sneeze.

"Oh my." Whisper looked down at Thornyan's body. "I suppose a little bit more of Coughkoff when into him than I had expected, didn't it?"

"This is amazing..." Twilight's smile grew wider and wider the more she looked at Jibanyan. "The spikes of Coughkoff, plus the body of Jibanyan, combined into one super-powerful package! Whisper, can you believe this?!"

"Yes I can, Twilight." Whisper gently touched the points of the spikes on Thornyan's body, making sure not to prick himself. "Thornyan is quite an interesting fusion to begin with, acutally. When Jibanyan gets a cold, he would normally turn into this form regardless. But you've managed to force it by fusing him with Coughkoff. An interesting turn of events, I must admit."

"Nyeah. I might have a cold, but I'm still good to go in combat." Thornyan snuffled and blew his nose into his fur before wiping it off with a handkerchief that Whisper provided. "Just make sure to hold onto that medal, alright? I can't really become Thornyan without it." He let another sneeze fly, shooting out thorns in all directions that punctured some of Twilight's equipment.

"Aggh!" Twilight yelped when she saw the damage done to her machines and immediately took the medal out, causing Thornyan to disappear. "Alright. I think that's enough Thornyan for today, right, Whisper?"

"Indeed." He nodded. "I would have liked to see what he could do in combat, but those machines that you have are quite valuable, and it would simply be atrocious to just leave them damaged or destroyed like that."

"I'll have to get something to fix them later." Twilight put Thornyan's medal into the medallium, right next to Jibanyan's original medal. "Now, let's see who else we can fuse together..."

Twilight put Jibanyan's medal into the watch, and he simply reappeared in a puff of smoke, shaking his head as he reappeared.

"Man. I really nyeed to learn how to control the Coughkoff part of Thornyan..." He rubbed the back of his head as he looked back up at Twilight and Whisper. "At least you got a new Yo-kai Medal out of it, though, right, Twilight?"

"Yeah." Twilight showed Jibanyan the medal for Thornyan. "That Thornyan is going to be quite handy when I'm facing Boss Yo-kai. But it's still not going to be enough."

"Huh?" Both Whisper and Jibanyan looked at each other as they came up to Twilight again.

"Felycan managed to cat-ify me, even when I was fighting alongside my Yo-kai friends." Twilight raised her hoof. "If I'm going to ever take on something like that again, then I'm going to need to become even stronger and befriend more Yo-kai."

"But how, Twilight?" Whisper threw his arms out. "Yo-kai can't be found unless you get out of this castle and go and find them yourself, or if they inspirit someone!"

"I just managed to fuse Jibanyan and Coughkoff together into Thornyan. I'm sure that I can handle making another one." Twilight looked at all of the medals in her book. "Let's see here... Who would do well with Jibanyan?"

"Twilight, I think you're missing the point here." Whisper gently tapped her shoulders. "It's all well and good, but you'd need a Slippery Yo-kai to upgrade the Yo-Kai Watch. And forgive me for sounding a bit rude, but there's no way that Jibanyan could ever be fused with something else to make a Slippery Yo-kai."

"Either way, there's no sense in just leaving out some important factors here, Whisper. Fusion's pretty new to me, and I want to see just what else I can fuse with the Yo-kai that I have." Twilight's gaze was now fixated on Roughraff. "Actually... I want to try something.

"What, Twilight?" Jibanyan looked at the medal that Twilight put into the watch.

"Brace yourself, Jibanyan. You may feel a bit tingly..." Twilight watched her watch generate Roughraff, who flicked back his pompadour as both he and Jibanyan glowed their tribe colours.

"What?!" Whisper looked at Jibanyan and Roughraff get pulled in by the tornadoes and into the watch. The two medals collided and sank in together, creating a new Yo-kai Medal. "Twilight? Can I just say that you've gone cra—"

"SUMMONING: CHARMING!" The watch cut Whisper off as another bright pink vortex created another medal for Twilight.

Alarming!
Boom-boom, walla walla, dance, dance,
Charming!

Another Yo-kai that looked identical to Jibanyan appeared before Twilight. It had purple fur and a pink pompadour haircut sticking out above its' forehead. It wore black 'V' shaped sunglasses and a black leather jacket on its back. It gave both Twilight and Whisper a mean smirk as it stood up.

"Name's Baddinyan." He crossed his arms. "The roughest, toughest, and most cool cat you'll ever see."

"Uggh... I was hoping this day would never come." Whisper face-palmed as he looked at both Baddinyan and his medal.

"Baddinyan. Interesting..." Twilight got closer to Baddinyan before she was slapped away.

"Hey! Hands off the merchandise, bub." Baddinyan turned his back to Twilight. "I don't let lame-os like you touch me, K?"

"He certainly isn't as friendly as Jibanyan." Twilight rolled her eyes.

"WELL WHAT DID YOU EXPECT WITH A NAME LIKE BADDINYAN?!" Whisper yelled, shaking his arms frantically. "Just get that medal out of the watch and into the medallium, alright?!"

"Geez, Whisper. Don't throw your toys out of the pram." Twilight took the medal out, causing Baddinyan to disappear in purple smoke.

Whisper caught his breath and leaned against one of the machines as he watched Jibanyan re-appear before him and Twilight. "Thank Enma that that's over."

"Why? What's wrong, Whisper?" Twilight looked over at him. "I thought you wanted to show me how fusion works. I didn't think you'd get so worked up about it."

"I did want to show you how fusion works, but not see you go power-hungry with it!" Whisper shouted. "I might be a simple ghost Yo-kai, but I'm still your butler. And as your butler, I have the right to tell you what's right and what's wrong!"

"Whisper! What's gotten into you?!" Twilight flinched at Whisper's tantrum and watched him huff and puff as he tried to grab his breath.

There was a long silence while Whisper recovered from his fit. His body had turned red out of his fury, and only when his breathing got shallower and light did it revert back to pale white. He let out a weary sigh and hung his body over Twilight's back.

"Sorry, Twilight. I didn't mean to snap at you." He rubbed his heat, feeling the sweat coming off of it from his ranting. "I was just so worried that Baddinyan would've inspirited you. You would've become a true bully; a ruthless miscreant; a downright despicable hooligan. I just didn't want to see you go from good to bad like that."

"Whisper. I'm an alicorn princess. I don't succumb to being mean and unjust like Roughraff and Baddinyan." Twilight shook her head as she put both Roughraff and Baddinyan's medals back into the book. "I may have been inspirited by Dummkap, but we were just caught off-guard. That won't happen again."

"Uggh. I'm not feeling very well after all of that." Whisper slumped back on Twilight's back and pushed his belly out. "I think that I need some time off."

"Yeah." Twilight nodded. "How about one more fusion for the day, then we can call it a night?"

"Another fusion?" Whisper looked over Twilight's head and down at her Yo-kai Medals. "But who would go well with who? Yo-kai don't just simply go together because you want them to. There's certain criteria that they need to meet for a fusion."

"You and Jibanyan can fuse together, right?" Twilight gave him a small grin.

"Please, Twilight. I've had too much stress today. I don't need anymo—" Before Whisper could finish, Twilight put him down next to Jibanyan and picked up her gene splicer "—Twilight! What are you doing?!"

"Nyeah! What's going on?" Jibanyan added.

"Just hold still for one second." Twilight picked up the gene splicer and turned it on. The two pylons that poked out of the end glowed bright blue and channeled energy between each other before making an electrical orb appear inbetween them. "This won't hurt a bit."

"Twi—" both Whisper and Jibanyan called out before they were both hit by the energy from the gene splicer.

They both felt something weird inside of them as their bodies collided together and stuck. They tried to break apart, but the more that they fought against the device's effects, the stronger that it became. Eventually, both of them were broken down into little molecules which collided together and made a giant burst of light appear from where both Yo-kai were standing.

When the light died down, a third Yo-kai that looked similar to Jibanyan was standing where both he and Whisper once were. This time, the Yo-kai was white with red spots and red ears. The last detail was that Whisper's little white tuft of hair now poked out of the top of its head.

"I'm Buchinyan! Nyice to meet you! Charmed!" Buchinyan spoke in both Jibanyan and Whisper's voices and changed between the two of them inbetween gasps of breath.

"Whisper? Jibanyan?" Twilight slowly stepped forward to Buchinyan and petted it on the forehead. "Are you both in there?"

"Of course we are! Nyeah! What did you think was going to happen?!" Buchinyan bounced up and down on the spot as Twilight looked at the new Yo-kai Medal.

"And why do you sound like both Whisper and Jibanyan, Buchinyan?" Twilight asked.

"Well, first, because there's not enough leg room in this body for two Yo-kai," Buchinyan spoke in Whisper's voice. "And secondly, it's because you fused us together with that weird thingy!"

"I'm so sorry. I didn't expect it to turn out like this..." Twilight looked at what she had done and glanced down at the medal. "I thought that together you'd be able to have like a top-half and bottom-half situation, not just be a simply Jibanyan with white skin and red spots."

"Oh, never mind that. Just get us out of this predicament. It's beginning to smell like fish in here. It is nyot! Oh give it a rest, Jibanyan! Nyo! You give it a rest, Whisper!" Buchinyan spoke as both of its sides wrestled against each other, throwing itself around wildly like a frenzied animal.

"I'm not gonna hear the end of this." Twilight took Buchinyan's medal out of the watch and slipped it into the medallium along side Baddinyan and Thornyan's medals.

Both Whisper and Jibanyan were thrown to the floor once they appeared, their arms and legs sprawled out as Twilight picked them both up with her magic and gently set them down by an empty table.

"I don't think I can ever be forgiven for what I did to both of you." Twilight gently tapped her hooves together as she looked at both Whisper and Jibanyan. "I let myself get carried away, and I think I really hurt both of you in the process. If you want to hate me, then that's fine. I deserve it."

"Twilight." Whisper floated up. "What you just did was not only insane, but it also worked. You made a brand new Yo-kai without needing the other medal to fuse with." He looked down at Buchinyan's medal. "Usually a two Yo-kai fusion requires both medals, but you managed to fuse both me and Jibanyan together without that medal.

"While I should be mad at you, I'm actually quite proud." Whisper's smile came back. "You're only still on an E rank Yo-Kai Watch, and look at what you've done. You've made two Yo-kai combine into one without the medals. That's never happened before."

"I know. I was just—" Twilight realized what Whisper said and jumped "—what?! B-But I went against your pleas! I force-fused you without properly consulting you! I don't deserve your sympathy!"

"Hey. You got a Yo-kai Medal out of it, and you did turn us back to nyormal, right?" Jibanyan came back up to Twilight. "Nyo harm, nyo fowl, right?"

"B-b-but... but... but..." Twilight looked at both Whisper and Jibanyan, groaned a bit, and flopped to the ground, blacking out once she landed.

"Are you alright, Twilight?" Jibanyan pulled Twilight's head up and saw her sleeping.

"Best not to wake her, Jibanyan." Whisper whispered into Jibanyan's ears. "It's been a long day, and Twilight probably needs some rest and relaxation from all of this fusion business."

Before anyone else could say anything, another bright flash of light appeared before Twilight, Whisper, and Jibanyan, and a new medal appeared when the light died down. The medal graciously hovered about for a few minutes before it fell and rolled into Twilight's hooves.

"Another Yo-kai Medal?" Whisper flew down and examined the back of the medal. The logo belonged to the Slippery tribe. "But who could it bel—" Whisper let out a massive gasp when he saw who was on the front of the Yo-kai Medal "—It's me! I have a Yo-kai Medal!"

"You have a Yo-kai Medal, Whisper?!" Jibanyan almost fell over as he looked at Whisper's medal. "But how?! I thought you were a special Yo-kai that didn't belong to the tribes!"

"I suppose I thought wrong." Whisper looked at how his face on the medal glistened off of the light. "But either way, this is fantastic news." He then looked at the pages where the Slippery Yo-kai were hiding. "Oh! Twilight found a Noko? Well, that's even better! Now she's got three medals from each tribe! She can upgrade her watch to D rank!" He listened to her begin to snore and felt how humid she was. "But, we'd better let her sleep for now. We'll give her the big surprise tomorrow."

All of a sudden, the door opened, and Spike walked into the room with Starlight Glimmer.

"Hey, Twilight. What's going—" he just noticed Twilight sleeping peacefully "—on?"

Starlight ran towards Twilight and felt her pulse. "Phew. She's not dead. She's only asleep."

"Guess that all those experiments finally got to her." Spike went around Twilight's back and grabbed onto her, struggling to lift her up. "C'mon... Twilight. If you're gonna sleep, you've got a bed to do it on, not the lab!"

"I'll help her out." Starlight levitated Twilight with her magic and carried her out of the room. "Spike, you should probably get to bed too. It's been a long day."

"What're you talking about? You're not my mum." Spike followed Starlight out, with both Whisper and Jibanyan following close behind. Together, the five of them went off to Twilight's room to lay her down for the evening.

As Twilight slept, she dreamt of dreams where she was frolicking with her Yo-kai friends, solving problems and helping other ponies by doing good deeds for them, or inspiriting them with Yo-kai when they wanted to feel or do something specific. As she slumbered, she smiled in the real world and didn't even notice her friends lay her down into her bed and tuck her in.
