Chapter 19: The Three Puppeteers (Part 1)

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

One late night at Canterlot High, the statue that held the portal to Equestria was emanating an eerie glow. It had been a few weeks since the events at Camp Everfree, and there had been a crack in the portal spreading magic everywhere. It was only a tiny crack, but it was still leaking nonetheless.

In addition to the rainbow-coloured magic that was pouring out, there were dark purple Yo-kai flames pouring out of the crack as well that stayed invisible, but still trickled down the side of the statue and over the portal. The flames floated and wrapped around the statue, and the portal turned from a clear glass pane into a purple swirling vortex.

Hundreds of different Yo-kai stampeded out of the portal and ran off in all directions. Some charging through the town, and others flying high into the air. Yo-kai of all different shapes, sizes, colours, and even ages burst out of the vortex. The rush eventually stopped a few minutes later, with three simple teenage boys stepping out of the other side.

The three teenagers had white skin and black hair, and were all wearing t-shirts and jeans. The shirt designs ranged from red with yellow stripes, a black and white diamond checkerboard, and even a plain blue shirt. The three of them were wearing black trainers with velcro straps, and their eyes all glowed dark purple. They were also carrying something with them. One of them was carrying a marionette, the second had two sock puppets on his arms, and the third was carrying a purple crystal that glimmered in the moonlight.

"Yes. This world will do nicely." The boy with the string puppet smirked.

"But I don't really understand." The boy with the sock puppets turned to his ally. "Why would we be sent here of all places? Isn't Equestria a lot different than this?"

"Anything that we can do to make Twilight Sparkle suffer is worth it." The one with the crystal spoke. "And besides. This world would have been otherwise sealed off if not for the crack atop this statue."

"These humans are a rather... defensive bunch." The boy with the string puppet walked towards Canterlot High's doors and gently rubbed them. "Mckraken, Dedtime, and Gogogo Godfather were all slain by some simple ten-year old boy named Nate. We must make sure that we do not suffer the same fate as those three.

"And we shall start with the faculty of this... high school, I think?" The boy looked back and examined all of the windows, peeking into all of the classrooms. "It has the same look as a human world high school, but I can't tell for sure. It's the middle of the night here."

"Either way, we must set up our base of operations." The boy holding the crystal joined the one with the puppet. "We shall use this world as a beachhead for the king and his Yo-kai. Once we have enough resources, humans, and Yo-kai devoted to our cause, we shall invade Equestria, flatten it, and give Princess Twilight the pain that she so utterly deserves."

"And if that little horse decides to come to this world and protect it, then that's another win-win." The sock puppet boy also joined his comrades. "It's like getting room service."

"Enough talk. Let's set up shop here at this high school." The first boy walked through the door, fazing invisible and returning to normal once he made it through. He looked back at his friends, who did the exact same thing. "It's been a while since these humans have seen a puppet show quite like ours..."

Twilight was busy re-organizing the books in her library, putting them in alphabetical order of both author name and title. She hummed a little tune to herself as she flew and used her magic to gently place each book in the right place.

Spike, Whisper, and Jibanyan were helping out too, taking the books and putting them on the low shelves while Twilight handled the ones on top. They were working at a slower pace, though, as they had to carefully look at each name of the book and the pony who wrote it.

"Thank you for helping me out, everyone." Twilight put the last of her books on the top shelf and turned towards her friends. "Re-organizing books isn't really something I thought you would be interested in, but I'm still glad to see you working nonetheless."

"Why, of course, Twilight." Whisper nodded. "A butler has to undergo many different trials and tribulations to please their master. And if those include re-organizing books, then I have no objections to it."

"Nyeah. I'm glad that I'm getting to spend time with you, Twilight." Jibanyan put another one of the books away. "If I didn't I wouldn't have known you were into, uh..." He quickly glanced at the cover of one of the books. "Secret Shipping Patterns of the Ponyville Ponies? Huh?"

"Oh! That's from my personal stash!" Twilight quickly snatched the book away from Jibanyan. "How did it ever get into library like that? I have this book in my room privately!"

"Mayhaps a Yo-kai might've moved it." Whisper looked at the book himself, flipping through the pages. "Though, I don't know who'd want to read something like this. It's all just how certain ponies in the town might be romantically involved with one another."

"Whisper! Didn't your last master tell you it's rude to look at someone's private stuff?!" Twilight closed the book and moved it away from him.

"Not really." Whisper shrugged. "I can't even remember the last time that Nate called me out when I looked at his private stuff."

"Well, I don't know, he should've maybe told you that sooner or later." Twilight rolled her eyes and turned away from him. "Now, let's get back to re-organising these books."

"Uhh... Twilight? What's with this glowing book?" Jibanyan bounced over towards a book that was shaking and glowing pink, vibrating like a human world cellphone would.

"Oh, that's just the book that I use to connect with Sunset Shimmer." Twilight flew down to the book and opened it up to the latest unfilled page.

"Sunset Shimmer?" Whisper looked at the words that were written into the latest page. "Who is that?"

"She's one of my other friends I have in another world." Twilight looked at the message that had been written down.

Hey, Twilight.

I know that this sounds a bit weird that we're calling you when there's another of you here in this other world, but there's something going on that not even we can control.

See, these three boys came to Canterlot High the other day, and they won over the entire school in seconds, similar to how the Dazzlings did when they first showed up. Only instead of singing, they just shared their love for sock puppets, marionettes, and mind control, and the entire school just fell head over heels for them.

I don't know what's going on, and the rest of my friends couldn't resist them either, not even the other Twilight.

Can you help us?

—Sunset Shimmer

"Sounds like something's going on in the other world." Twilight closed the book and put it away. "But should I go back is the real question? There's another me there, and I get the feeling that if we stayed together for too long, it would cause a paradox that would spell trouble for both of our worlds."

"Whatever do you mean, Twilight?" Whisper looked at the message himself. "From the way she worded it, this Sunset Shimmer sounds desperate. Given how she mentioned how they made the whole school love them, I can only draw the conclusion that there were Yo-kai involved in this."

"But who?" Jibanyan asked, leaping up onto Twilight's back.

"I can only assume that it was Casanuva for the time being, but I can't be sure." Whisper floated back over to Twilight. "And besides, how could a paradox possibly make things worse? This king that Felycan mentioned is already trouble enough, so there's nothing else that could possibly be worse than him."

"We'd better get going. And fast." Twilight ran out of the room towards the portal. "If there are Yo-kai plaguing Canterlot High, then Sunset and the girls might need me now more than ever!"

"Can I come too?" Spike chased after Twilight, Whisper, and Jibanyan

"Sorry, Spike. But there's a version of you in this other world as well, and I don't want there to be even more paradoxes. One is enough." Twilight looked back at Spike and saw his ears droop. "Hey. Don't worry about it. You can be in charge of the castle until I get back."

"It still wouldn't feel the same now that Starlight's here." Spike slowly walked in the other direction, hanging his head.

Twilight burst into the portal room and activated the device that allowed her to freely access the portal to the human world. She saw the machine buzz to life and generate a pink gateway that lead to Canterlot High.

"What is this thing?" Whisper got closer to the portal and stuck his hand through it, seeing it vanish into the light.

"It's a portal. More specifically, one that leads to Canterlot High where Sunset and her friends are." Twilight nodded as she examined the portal for herself. "I went through this thing a few times before, and the last time I went, I saw that there was another version of me on the other side."

"Anyother Twilight?" Jibanyan's eyes were fixated on the portal. "But how is that possible? There's only one Twilight Sparkle."

"Technically, there's one Twilight Sparkle here in Equestria. What I meant to say is that this world is like another dimension where we all stand on two legs, use these weird things called fingers, and where magic wasn't commonplace." Twilight thought back to the times where she had to fight Sunset and the Dazzlings. "Until now."

"Two legs? Fingers? I can only assume you mean humans." Whisper floated down onto Twilight's back. "The human race is quite a marvellous species, actually. My last master, Nate, was a human himself."

"Nyeah! He was pretty awesome!" Jibanyan nodded vigorously. "He gave me chocobars, let me sleep with him, and he was probably the bestest friend I ever had!"

"So, whatever happened between you three?" Twilight asked.

"Hard to say, really. The events are so foggy now that I think about it." Whisper scratched his chin and looked up to the sky. "What I do remember is that Nate saved the human world three times before. First Mckraken, then Dame Dedtime, and then again with Gogogo Godfather. He really was a miraculous boy..."

"And now Yo-kai are running amok there again." Twilight stared at the portal some more. "If we're not quick, then the humans of the world could be in some really big trouble."

"Before you go, Twilight, have you remembered to upgrade the Yo-Kai Watch yet?" Whisper pointed at the medallium. "You do have twenty-four medals now, so you can bump it up to D rank right now and be prepared for some higher-level Yo-kai problems."

"Okay, well, how do we do that?" Twilight opened up the medallium and took out three medals from each of the tribes.

"Simple." Whisper took all of the medals and set them down around Twilight, separating them into eight different sections for each of the tribes.

The medals all glowed when they were placed around Twilight's hooves and hovered into the air. A magical rainbow-light chained all twenty-four medals together and generated the eight Yo-kai tribe symbols by Twilight's feet, with her standing in the middle of a brand new seal.

The eight logos then created large columns of light that danced around Twilight and crashed down on her, bathing her in the radiant energy. The light then drained into the Yo-Kai Watch, making it blast a powerful light to Twilight, Whisper, and Jibanyan's eyes, temporarily blinding them.

When the light died down, the Yo-Kai Watch looked relatively unchanged, until a little hatch on the clock opened up showing the letter E. That letter was quickly replaced with the letter D before the hatch closed up.

"Good. We're now up to Rank D, and many more Yo-kai can be found." Whisper smiled at Twilight's newly upgraded Yo-kai Watch. "That should help you to detain some tougher threats and make stronger Yo-kai friends."

"Let's get going, then." Twilight took the medals and slipped them back into the medallium. She closed the book back up and put it securely on her back. "Are you two ready for this?"

"Of course." Whisper nodded. "After many different jumps between the Yo-kai World and human world before, I think I'm quite well acquainted with interdimensional travel."

"What about you, Jibanyan?" Twilight looked back to him.

"Nyeah. I'm ready." Jibanyan tightly clutched onto Twilight's sides, bracing himself for the jump between worlds.

"Then hold on tight. Things are about to get rough..." Twilight charged through the portal and jumped through it, with Whisper and Jibanyan right by her side.

The three of them found themselves spiralling through a rainbow-coloured vortex, being thrown around in many different directions like clothes in a washing machine. Whisper himself was unfazed, but Twilight and Jibanyan felt themselves getting dizzy with how violently they were thrown around the light tunnel.

Twilight felt herself transform as she made it towards the light at the end of the tunnel. Her wings and horns vanished, and her hooves grew fingers and toes. Her muzzle shrunk and was replaced with a human nose, and she felt her clothes magicallt appear around her, smothering Jibanyan and making him lose his grip.

He was about to fly all the way back out of the portal until Whisper grabbed a hold of him and carried him through the light with Twilight.

"Thanks, Whisper," he said.

"Don't mention it, Jibanyan." Whisper put him back on Twilight. "Now brace for impact!"

The three of them all looked into the ever-shining light and disappeared into it entirely. They couldn't even see the rainbow anymore as they vanished into the other world.
