Chapter 14: Break-in Bedlam/Applejack, Asleep on the Job

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Twilight and Whisper walked down the street carrying bags of groceries, when something caught their eyes. One of the houses on the road had its' front door pried wide open, but no-one came out of the other side. The two of them exchanged glances before they walked over to the door and began to investigate.

"You think a Yo-kai could have done this?" Twilight rubbed the open door, accidentally pushing it open wider.

"Either that, or Ponyville's got someone trying to burgle the poor ponies out of everything they own..." Whisper scratched his chin as he looked inside. "I do wish it didn't have to be either of those things and that it was an accident, but who in their right mind would leave their front door unlocked and leave?"

"If it was another Yo-kai, then that takes me one step closer to upgrading the Yo-Kai Watch to 'D' Rank." Twilight nodded flipped up the lens and started searching around the house for the Yo-kai. The watch's noise echoed throughout the building as Twilight throughly searched every room, but she ultimately found nothing. "Well, if there was a Yo-kai here, they're gone now...

"Whisper? Is there anything in your little computer that shows a Yo-kai that picks locks?" Twilight closed the watch and turned towards him.

"Yes there is, Twilight." Whisper pulled out the tablet and showed a picture of a Yo-kai with orange skin, war paint on its' face, a frying pan on its' head, a white loincloth around its' waist, and a giant toothpick. "If I'm not mistaken, this was the work of a Brave tribe Yo-kai called Pandle."

"Pandle?" Twilight examined the Yo-kai throughly.

"Pandle is... a bit of an oddball really." Whisper flicked his finger across the picture, showing more images of Pandle breaking locks and fighting other Yo-kai. "Despite his tiny stature, Pandle still packs quite a punch. His only downside is his carelessness. He often leaves a massive trail behind after breaking into someone's house, and it's very easy to track him down."

"He's a Brave tribe Yo-kai, though. So what he lacks in covering his tracks, he probably makes up for in combat, right?" Twilight raised a brow.

"Yes, but not all Brave tribe Yo-kai are quite as strong-willed and determined fighters as Blazion," said Whisper. "In fact, there are some Yo-kai who are so lazy or so out of it that it's a wonder that they even made the Brave tribe in the first place..."

"Well we've got time to think about that later." Twilight walked out of the house. "Right now, there's a Yo-kai on the loose breaking into houses and leaving the doors wide open. We need to find some way to find it and stop it."

"And befriend it?" Whisper smiled.

"Yes. And befriend it." Twilight nodded as she walked down the road, looking at the rest of the houses.

With each and every house that Twilight walked past, it was the same deal. Houses had been broken into and their doors were left wide open. It would be child's play for anyone to walk inside and steal something unless she and Whisper caught Pandle. Locks were broken, chains that helped keep unlocked doors shut were snapped, and even some side windows had their locks picked and were opened wide.

"How many houses are there in Ponyville, Twilight?" Whisper asked, looking at the damage that Pandle had done to the locks. "Surely, he can't keep this up forever."

"Which is exactly how we're going to beat it." Twilight nodded. "We're going to go into one of the houses, lock it up again, and then when Pandle comes by and unlocks it, we pounce on him with the Yo-kai."

"Which one?"

"How about Jibanyan?" Twilight smiled and pulled out Jibanyan's medal. "He's been a great Yo-kai so far, and he's devoted to me in more ways than one. Might as well give him another time to shine."

"Well, we shan't waste any more time, Twilight!" Whisper spun round and pointed off down the street, leaning forward as he did. "Let's go lay our trap!"

Later, Twilight, Whisper, and Jibanyan were inside one of the houses that hadn't been broken into yet and were quietly perched up against the door. They placed their ears next to it and listened as closely as they could for footsteps of any description. All they heard were the hooves of the ponies from the outside, though, as Pandle was invisible.

"Are you sure that he'll come?" Jibanyan quietly whispered to Twilight.

"I'm sure that he will, Jibanyan." Twilight leaned down and stroked him. "Whisper can sense whenever a Yo-kai's aura is present, so when Pandle gets close, he'll alert us both."

"Remember to point the watch as he's breaking in, Twilight." Whisper raised his finger again. "Pandle won't be tackle-able until he's exposed. Once he is, feel free to double-team him with Jibanyan."

"Sure thing, Whisper." Twilight gave him a gentle nod and went back to watching and waiting by the door.

Eventually, a small shadow appeared by the crack that let in the light from the bottom of the door, and the sound of the lock being picked could be heard by all three of them.

Silently, Twilight opened up the Yo-Kai Watch and pointed it at Pandle as he cracked open the lock. All twelve segments of the watch lit up, and in seconds, he was revealed to all of them in a blast of purple smoke.

"BUSTED!" Twilight, Whisper, and Jibanyan threw the door open, causing Pandle to fall onto his butt and scamper backwards.

"Darn it!" Pandle got to his knees, took his toothpick, and ran away as fast as he could—which wasn't much considering that he was no bigger than Jibanyan, and his legs were very small. "I'm outta here!"

"After him!" Whisper yelled, causing both Twilight and Jibanyan to leisurelyjog after the Yo-kai.

The chase was over relatively quickly, due to Pandle's small size and stature. His small and stubby legs made it hard for him to get away, and it wasn't long before both Twilight and Jibanyan cornered him on all sides, with Whisper overhead.

"Honestly, you should learn to be more careful next time, Pandle." Twilight stepped forward. "I mean, breaking into people's houses is one thing, but then leaving those doors wide open afterwards? That's sloppy if ever I saw it."

Pandle grunted and poked Twilight in the eye with his toothpick. "Shut up! All my life I've been called careless and reckless! Well, now's the day that that changes!" He puffed out his chest as Twilight grabbed her poked eye. "I'm gonna beat you down, and prove that I'm not some weak Yo-kai like you think I am!"

"Urrgh..." Twilight pressed against her eye with her hoof and saw Pandle step towards her. "Jibanyan! Get him!"

"Take this!" Jibanyan gave Pandle a sharp scratch on the face with both of his claws.

"I'm brave! I'm strong! I'm not as weak as I look!" Pandle used his toothpick as a spear, poking and prodding at Jibanyan at every chance he was given. Every time he thrust his pick, it went straight into Jibanyan's body and pricked him hard. "Size doesn't matter if you're a Brave Yo-kai like me!"

"I've never seen a Pandle physically attack someone with a Yo-Kai Watch before..." Whisper watched as Jibanyan and Pandle hit each other with their claws and pick. Both fighters were beginning to show their wounds as the fight progressed, and it didn't seem to end. "I guess this one must be really riled up..."

"Enough of this!" Pandle gathered up energy for a Soultimate. "It's time to really pick away at your health, Jibanyan!"

"Fine with me!" Jibanyan also charged up energy for a Soultimate.

As soon as Twilight felt the pain from her initial stab disappear, she opened her eye—which was still blurry from when she had been hurt by Pandle—and saw that both Yo-kai were preparing to unleash their ultimate moves. With how she had been keeping an eye on Pandle's fighting style and his undying resolve, she simply stood there with a smile as she watched both of them unleash their attacks.

"PAWS OF FURY!" Jibanyan called out, jabbing at Pandle at light-speed.

"POINTY TOOTHPICK!" Pandle responded in kind, thrusting his pick at the same time as Jibanyan struck with his paws.

Both of the attacks were connecting with each other, and none of them were actually breaking through to the other Yo-kai. Jibanyan and Pandle both fought long and hard, keeping up with each others' attacks, until finally, Pandle's stance started to falter as he bent one of his legs. This allowed Jibanyan to strike as hard as he could, breaking the toothpick in half, and sending Pandle crashing into Twilight.

Twilight caught Pandle and stood him back on his feet, gently rubbing where he had been hit the most by Jibanyan. She looked down at his pan helmet and saw that it had been dented and battered out of shape by the assault.

"Are you alright?" Twilight asked once Pandle climbed out of her care and shakily stood on his own two feet again.

"No..." Pandle fell back down onto his knees, clutching what remained of his toothpick as he looked up at Jibanyan. "No matter how hard I try, I never defeat anyone!

"What use is there for me in the Brave tribe if I can't even defeat a small opponent like Jibanyan?" Pandle started to tear up. "Maybe I should just go away and throw myself into the river of fire at Hooligan's Road." He slowly limped away, sniffing and rubbing his eyes. "At least that's the one thing that I'm good at. Losing..."

"No, no, no, no, no. Pandle. You're getting it all wrong." Twilight came up to him and gave him a small hug. "You're not weak. You're not smart, and you're not a loser."

"Yes I am! I can't do anything right!" Pandle screamed. "I can't break into someone's house without being noticed, I can't defeat Yo-kai in battle, and worst of all, I can't even live with these facts! The world's better off without me. I'll just go and get out of your hair now..."

"No matter how much you want to deny it, deep down, I know that you're a strong Yo-kai, Pandle." Twilight kissed him on the forehead. "You just need more practice, more determination, and maybe some other armour." She looked at his body. "I mean, a pan on your head isn't really the best defence. You just protect your top and leave everything else open to attack from enemy forces.

"Second, a toothpick is a sharp tool, yes, but it's pretty flimsy, as Jibanyan demonstrated earlier." Twilight picked up the second half of the toothpick and gave it back to Pandle. "Now, if you had an actual spear made out of steel, then that would be ten times as strong, and possibly twice as sharp."

"What good is all that now?!" Pandle cried into Twilight's fur. "I'm still going to be the weakest Yo-kai in the tribe, so what's the point?"

"Pandle," Twilight whispered into his ear. "If you promise not to break into someone's house and pull yourself out of this funk you're in, I can be your best friend and show you how to win. No matter the size of the enemy, the speed they can muster up, or the power that they have tucked away."

"You promise?" Pandle's tears had withered down, but they were still flowing.

"Cross my heart and hope to fly, stick a cupcake in my eye." Twilight performed the Pinkie Promise, poking the eye that Pandle had jabbed her in. "Ow. Still gonna take some time to fully recover..."

"Thanks, Twilight..." Pandle looked up at Twilight, reached into his loincloth, and handed her his Yo-kai Medal. "I hope that you use me lots..."

"I will, Pandle." Twilight gave him a gentle smile as he disappeared back to his world.

"Twilight. That was a great fight between Jibanyan and Pandle." Whisper came over and looked at the Yo-kai Medal. "I do hope that you stay true to your promise in the future, though. Pandle sounded like he was desperate back there."

"He just wanted to prove that he was a strong fighter, and we cruelly denied him a victory..." Twilight clutched the medal as tightly as she could, and shed a single tear.

"I highly doubt that our actions were cruel, Twilight," said Whisper. "He tried breaking into people's houses and failed miserably, left a huge trail for us to easily follow him, and despite the fact that he did fight in the end, Jibanyan was just too strong of an opponent for him."

"Which is why I'm going to use him every time I go into battle." Twilight nodded. "Him, Roughraff, and Jibanyan together make an unstoppable team, I'm sure."

"Usually, I don't condone using many Yo-kai that break into places, steal stuff, or are just general criminals, but to each their own, I suppose." He crossed his arms. "It's not my decision on which Yo-kai you bust out. You freed me, and you possess the Yo-Kai Watch. It's all in your hooves on who you bring out, Twilight."

"You don't even have hooves, Whisper." Twilight looked at his hands.

"Hands, hooves, potato, tomato. You get the idea!" Whisper shook his arms around. "Whatever. You solved the problem and got a Yo-kai Medal from it. So, all in all, it's another brick in the wall."

"Yeah. A wall that's only just a bunch of bricks laid in a line at the moment." Twilight looked at all of the empty slots as she put Pandle's medal into the Yo-kai Medallium.

"But you're making smooth progress, Twilight." Whisper looked at the slots that she had filled with her medals. "I've never seen someone get that many Yo-kai Medals that fast. You have a real knack for this friendship thing, don't you?"

"Well yeah. That's why I'm the princess of it, after all." Twilight blushed and let a small chuckle slip, which was soon accompanied by the laughter of both Whisper and Jibanyan.

"I'm so glad ya'll decided to help out today." Applejack was bucking apples into carts which Twilight, Whisper, Jibanyan, and the rest of the girls were hauling off towards the barn. "The harvest season's almost over, and Applebloom twisted her ankles at tap dancing practice, so I really appreciate it."

"No problem, Applejack." Rainbow Dash gave Applejack a salute as she moved the cart towards the barn. "I'd never let you or the others down for anything."

"It still seems odd that you can remain so calm with all of the Yo-kai running rampant around Ponyville." Fluttershy walked forward and brushed some hair out of her face. "I thought you'd be worried stiff with everything that's happened recently."

"Yes. Pinkie Pie becoming negative in a heartbeat, Twilight becoming the dumbest pony on the planet, Applebloom turning invisible..." Rarity tapped on her hoof with her other hoof for each occurence.

"Don't forget the time that Buhu turned all of us into sad sacks because Twilight went missing!" Pinkie blurted out.

"Yes, and that, Pinkie." Rarity turned to face her as she delicately picked out some of the rotting apples and threw them away with her magic. "And judging from how many spaces are left on that medallium Twilight has, it's safe to say that there are many, many more Yo-kai out there, just itching to inspirit other ponies..."

"I'm not so worried 'cause of Twilight and her Yo-Kai Watch." Applejack pointed over to Twilight's watch as she used her magic to pick off some more apples from the trees. "Ever since these Yo-kai came into Equestria, Twilight's been busting 'em left, right, and centre."

"Yeah! We should totally make a theme song for her about it!" Pinkie bounced up. "I'm already working on the lyrics, but I'm having some trouble. What's a good rhyme for Yo-kai?"

"Pinkie. I'm glad that you're all pleased with my progress, but there's no reason to get so obsessed with this whole thing." Twilight had a cart strapped to her back that was filled with apples. "Just because some invisible creatures are moving into Equestria and are probably going to change our lives in a massive way, that doesn't mean that Yo-kai should become your life. And if they do, just come to me, and I'll be sure to exorcise whatever Yo-kai might be inspiriting you."

"What about that giant cat Yo-kai that inspirited the whole town a few weeks ago?" Rainbow Dash asked. "No-one could stop it; not even you! You got turned into a cat like the rest of us, and Whisper was worried sick."

"Hmph! I was not." Whisper turned his head and blushed. "I was... simply concerned. It's not like I'm falling in love with this Twilight pony or anything."

"You sure about that, Whisper?" Twilight took notice of her friend's changing expression, and the nervousness in his voice. "You're blushing so much, your whole body's turning pink."

"I-I-I..." Whisper was at a loss for words with Twilight's statement. He blushed some more before he violently shook his head and hands. "L-Let's not let those thoughts fester, Twilight. Best to get on with the job and help out Applejack in any way."

"You're doing a great job, by the way." Applejack smiled and tipped her hat over her head as she bucked another tree, causing the apples to fall. "We're just halfway done now. I'll take the ones by the east side. You just deliver those apples to the barn and come back to me A.S.A.P."

"Sure thing, Applejack." Twilight gave Applejack a nod before she went off with the other ponies and their carts.

"Yep. Ya'll just get along now, and I'll... take things easy." Applejack walked off, not noticing that the inspiriting flame had descended upon her, and that a Yo-kai had taken control.

Eventually, the girls finished their work on the western side of the orchard, making multiple stops back and forth with their applecarts and barrels, transferring the fruits of their labour from the trees to the barn. It had taken them quite some time, despite their large numbers and magical powers and Yo-kai aid, but even so, they powered through the work easily, and were moving on to help Applejack on the east side.

"Hey, Applejack? How's it going on the east side?" Twilight saw Applejack in the distance and walked up to her. "I couldn't help but notice that there were still so many apple trees still to be bucked on this side of the field. If you want us to take over for the day, that'd be great."

"Sure thing, Twi." Applejack reclined against one of the trees, chewing on a piece of grass. "In fact, you and the girls can take all of the jobs at Sweet Apple Acres. Not like I'm going anywhere, after all."

Twilight stood there, mouth agape at what Applejack had said. "What? That doesn't sound like you at all..."

"Well, let's just say that after so much time workin' on a farm, ya tend to wear yourself down pretty quickly." Applejack sunk down onto her back. "So, I decided that today's gonna be my day off. Just me, this tree, my hat, and this lovely feller here to keep me company."

"Feller?" Twilight raised one of her eyebrows at that word.

"There must be a Yo-kai at work here." Whisper pointed over to Applejack and saw the inspiriting flame. "I don't know much about Applejack, but she looked like she had tons of energy left. Heck, she could've even swept this whole orchard if needs be!"

"Well, let's see what we've got here..." Twilight flipped up the lens and pointed it over to Applejack's side. Seeing the segments light up, the new Yo-kai was revealed.

The Yo-kai could only be described as a katana that had somehow become floppy from unknown reasons with arms, legs, and a face. The sword was silver and magenta, with the handle of the katana being green with purple diamonds. The Yo-kai let out a hearty yawn and put its' hands behind its' head.

"That is Cutta-nah." Whisper pointed at the floppy sword. "If he inspirits you, you become the laziest person on the planet. Someone who wants to relax and not do anything." He flew up to Cutta-nah and pointed at the pattern on his front side. "Oh, and these diamonds on his body? Those actually determine how strong his laziness powers are, kind of like the numbered switches on a fan."

"Of course. It all makes sense now!" Twilight slapped her head and looked at Cutta-nah. "Applejack's a hard worker, so the best way to counter this is with a Yo-kai that can make her feel lazy and unwilling to do anything."

"It's still your choice, Twilight. Negotiation or confrontation as usual." Whisper flew right back to her.

"Let's try talking first." Twilight walked up to Cutta-nah. "Because with such a name like that, and the power to make anyone lazy, I imagine that Cutta-nah's gonna be easy to reason with."

Cutta-nah looked up at Twilight and yawned again.

"Excuse me? Cutta-nah?" Twilight kneeled down to his height and looked the Yo-kai in the eyes. "My name's Twilight Sparkle, Princess of Friendship, and bearer of the Yo-Kai Watch."

"Sounds good," Cutta-nah responded deftly.

"Anyway, can I just ask you to stop inspiriting Applejack?" Twilight said. "See, she's got an awful lot of apples to buck from the trees around here, and I don't think she'd like to be lazy."

"Nah." Cutta-nah slid down onto his back side, making his floppy sword straight. "Just chillax, take it easy, and before you know it, the day'll be over."

"Well, I tried." Twilight pulled out a Yo-kai Medal from the medallium. "Guess there's really only one other way to fix this...

"Come on out, my Yo-kai friend! Calling Hungramps!" Twilight threw the medal into the air and caught it with her hoof. "Yo-kai Medal! Do your thing!" Just like before, she shoved it into the slot on the watch.

"SUMMONING: HEARTFUL!" The Yo-Kai Watch spat out green beams that danced together, generating Hungramps.

Speedy artful!
Sing la-la-la!
Everywhere Heartful!

"Hungramps!" He landed on his feet before Twilight and Whisper, sticking his tongue out.

"Hungramps, can you inspirit Applejack and Cutta-nah?" Twilight spoke into his ears.

"Why, of course, Twilight. But there's no need to yell." Hungramps stepped forward slowly and looked at both the Yo-kai and the pony. "I might be an old man, but I'm not deaf yet."

Hungramps' inspiriting flame went straight over both Applejack and Cutta-nah, and it looked like Applejack was consumed by the invisible flames, while Cutta-nah's stomach began to rumble.

"Aww man, dude. I'm pretty hungry right now..." Cutta-nah slowly stood up and looked towards the apples on the tree. "But I'm too small to get those apples."

"We're just gonna keep you like this until you stop inspiriting her, Cutta-nah." Twilight gave him a coy smile and crossed her hooves, while Hungramps just stood there and did nothing.

Cutta-nah bit his lower lip as he looked up at the apples hanging on the branches. He could already taste the succulent juices of the fruit landing in his mouth as he licked his lips. He gave one last look at Twilight, Whisper, and Hungramps before he closed his eyes, put his hands on his temples, and said, "Alright! Alright! Geez!" And with a click of his fingers, Applejack's first flame vanished, while the one from Hungramps still lingered.

"Huh?" Applejack stood up herself and bucked one of the trees, taking a bite into one of the apples that fell from it. "When did I get so hungry?"

"Gimme! Gimme!" Cutta-nah dived into one of the apples and cut it up with his sword's edge. He cut it into quarters and shoved them into his mouth one by one, ripping and tearing at the fleshy exterior and the juicy interior.

"I still don't know how he does that, comparing how floppy his sword edge looks..." Twilight watched Cutta-nah slice the apples and put them into his mouth.

"You might be suprised, Twilight." Whisper smiled as he took an apple for himself. "Cutta-nah, despite being a lazy little sword, is actually quite sharp. He never really uses his sword much, though. He just sits around on his butt all day, yawning and making others lazy."

"Why am I still hungry?!" Cutta-nah cried out after eating a third apple. "Make it stop, dude!"

"Alright, Hungramps. That's enough for now." Twilight gave Hungramps a gentle rub on the head, causing him to let out a lengthy sigh, making the inspiriting flames vanish.

"Okay, dude. I understand you've got some real power, y'know?" Cutta-nah stepped forward, his sword drooping down over his back. "And like, I'm not just gonna pass up an opportunity to be friends with you just because I'm lazy, yeah?

"So here's the deal, k?" Cutta-nah handed Twilight his Yo-kai Medal. "I'm gonna give you this Yo-kai Medal, alright? That way, you can, like, summon me at any time to fight your battles for you. Sound good, bro?"

"Yeah. That's totally fine with me." Twilight took the Yo-kai Medal and popped it into the medallium. "But I have to say that this is all too easy, don't you think?"

"Well that's how we Cutta-nah like to live, yo?" Cutta-nah slicked his sword back, managing not to cut himself despite driving his palm over the sharpened blade. "Take it easy, Twi. Besides. Easy solutions mean easy life." He walked away. "Alright, I'm out. Peace." He gave Twilight a peace sign with his fingers and vanished in a purple smoke burst.

"He seemed like a nice fellow once he opened up a little." Whisper put down the apple and looked at the Yo-kai Medal for Cutta-nah. "But I do have to agree that this is far too easy. But it is what it is, after all. Who am I to judge what Yo-kai think and how they befriend you?"

"Cutta-nah..." Twilight looked at the medal, and then at the Brave tribe emblem on the back. "Hard to believe that there exists something that can make you lazy as can be, but here he was, proving me wrong. I really need to take a lesson from some of these Yo-kai."

"Living life on the free and easy is a good thing, but only when the time and place is right." Whisper nodded his head. "Why, imagine what would've happened if Cutta-nah inspirited ponies in the middle of a hurricane, or if they were so close to finishing off something really important and needed all of the horsepower they could get! That would've been truly atrocious..."

"I swear, there's some kind of pattern going on with these Yo-kai..." Twilight looked down at the medal. "Buhu making everyone sad when I left; Heheheel making Rarity laugh at her own designs; Negatibuzz turning Pinkie Pie mean; Dummkap making me stupid; and now Cutta-nah making Applejack lazy? Something's not right here, and I need to find out what it is before it's too late..." She clutched the medal tighter before she put it into the Yo-kai Medallium, along with Hungramps' medal.
