Chapter 13: Hungry for More/Upgrading the Yo-Kai Watch

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Twilight was walking down the street with Jibanyan and Whisper, looking to see if there were any new Yo-kai in town. After hearing what Red Snow had to say the other day, she was even more curious to know what else could be lurking about, inspiriting helpless ponies, and causing general mischief.

"Twilight, let me ask you something," said Whisper. "Is it a problem to be obsessed with an impending crisis, or is that just me?"

"Whisper. Calm down." Twilight gently stroked his back. "Remember that we not only have the Yo-kai at our side, but me and my friends can use the Magic of Friendship to defeat this king if he ever rears his ugly face in Equestria."

"The thing is, though, I've seen many great and evil Boss Yo-kai throught my existence, all of which with the power to cause the end of the world." Whisper shuddered as he flashed back to those days. "Between the chaos with Mckraken and Ubaune, I'm really, REALLY worried what this king could do to Equestria and the Yo-kai World..."

"We also have Red Snow on our side now." Twilight looked over and saw a house unlike the others. It had white walls made of concrete with Japonese windows and sliding doors leading into it. There were blue curtains at the door, with a waving cat figure standing outside. "She's taken up residence in Ponyville in case some bigger threats like Felycan show up. But in our spare time, we could try to make friends with her."

"Friends are helpful, resourceful, and in some cases quite powerful together, so I'm all for this idea." Whisper nodded as they walked over to the house. "Plus, she has a Yo-Kai Watch and her Sailornyan, so she could help out if you're stuck in a jam."

"But that's probably nyot gonna happen with me on your side, Twilight." Jibanyan pointed towards his puffed out chest. "If anything tries to lay a finger on you, I'll bring out the Paws of Fury on them!" Jibanyan practiced his move by jabbing into the air in different diretions, grunting with each strike.

"He's certainly determined, isn't he?" Twilight smiled at Jibanyan's antics.

"Jibanyan is one of the most loyal Yo-kai I know," Whisper said. "When he gets a master, he does everything that he can to keep them. Why, after those heartbreaking words that his first master left on him when he died, it would break his heart if he were abandoned again..."

"What do you mean, when he died?" Twilight asked as she opened the doors to Red Snow's house and walked inside.

"Jibanyan was once a normal house cat, living with a human girl named Amy. They had a good life together, full of games, exercise, and food," Whisper's tone started peaceful, but slowly dropped. "But then, the unthinkable happened.

"Jibanyan was run over by a truck one day. In short, he didn't survive." Whisper looked over at Jibanyan, who was still jabbing the air with his paws. "Instead of feeling sorry for him, Amy cruelly called him weak and left his rotting corpse behind."

"What?! That's horrible!" Twilight recoiled at the story's ending. "He got run over by a truck! That's the saddest and most sudden way anyone can die! And she just called him weak for it?!" Twilight gnashed her teeth together and went red in the face. "I'd like to see that Amy and give her a piece of my mind someday..."

"Ever since then, Jibanyan was resurrected as a Yo-kai, denying what Amy said, hoping that she still loved him deep down," Whisper continued. "He goes out onto the road and picks a fight with literally every truck that comes his way, no matter how big or small. He won't stop until he finally defeats one and gets revenge for what happened that day..."

"Well, I can't deny that he's got guts." Twilight saw him finally finish, sweating heavily as he walked into Red Snow's house and caught up to her and Whisper. "Not only does he want to fight against every truck that he sees, but he also took on Felycan—who was probably thirty-five times his size—and won. I've seen bravery and I've some some extraordinary things, but considering that Jibanyan's a regular cat taking on the world and refusing to give up, now that's something that I can admire..."

"Even more so when Kin and Gin threw him back in time and tried to separate him from Nate by changing the past," Whisper saw Twilight pick Jibanyan up and stroke him. "Jibanyan managed to fight back and save Amy from being killed, and that time, she was actually genuinely sorry for him."

"Kin and Gin?" Twilight raised a brow.

"They're evil twin Yo-kai, and underlings to the insidious Tokio Ubaune who tried to conquer the world many years ago." Whisper showed a picture of two old ladies. One with golden hair and a red coat, and the other one with silver hair and a blue coat. "Ubaune might be dead, but it's unclear on what happened to those two."

"I'd better be prepared for if they do show up, then." Twilight gently clutched her Yo-Kai Watch. "With everything that's happened to him, Jibanyan needs all of the help, support, and love that he can get, and I'm happy to give it to him." She gave him a hug.

"Aww... Thanks, Twilight." Jibanyan nuzzled into Twilight's neck as she cuddled him.

"By the way, I have to say that this is a rather nice house." Whisper looked around Red Snow's house. It was very well-kept with pictures hanging on the wall, the floor devoid of any kind of mess, and books neatly organized on the bookshelves. There were cushions on the floor with a table barely taller than it, with a Japonese tea set sitting on top of it. There were no stairs, but sliding doors were seen in front of, and to the sides of him and Twilight. "Do you think she'll mind us just dropping in?"

"I think she might." Twilight walked towards one of the sliding doors and opened it. "I am the Princess of Friendship, after all. Red Snow looked for me exclusively, so I'm sure that she'll be fine with me coming around to check on how she's doing."

She opened another door to see a room much different to the ones that she had seen before. It was filled with posters of Japonese bands and singers, along with a few other bright pink knick-knacks. There were ramen cups scattered all across the ground, and plastic drink bottles laid across the bed.

Red Snow herself was stuffing her face with food, unaware that there was a purple inspiriting flame around her. Sailornyan was also there, and she had been watching Red Snow eat ravenously for a while now, and it wasn't until Twilight, Whisper, and Jibanyan opened the door that she turned towards them.

"Twilight! Help!" Sailornyan jumped on the spot, flailing her hooves all around. "She just started eating like this out of nowhere! I don't know what to do!"

"Another Yo-kai, Whisper?" Twilight looked back at him.

"Yes. But I suppose I could be wrong and that Miss Snow here has a very, very savage appetite for being a Japonese pony..." Whisper watched her continue to rip and tear into the food and drink. "Ah well, worth a shot, isn't it?"

"Yeah. I guess." Twilight flipped up the lens and pointed it at a corner of the room, causing the twelve segments to light up and reveal the Yo-kai inspiriting Red Snow.

The new Yo-kai looked very much like a human elder, with a long pointy head and a grey robe. He had short thin arms and looked like an oversized seed, but he just involuntarily hanging his tongue out and stood there doing absolutely nothing.

"That is Hungramps." Whisper pointed over to the Yo-kai in the corner. "As the name implies, he's an old man who can make you quite hungry. Having him stand in a corner of one's house is actually quite low-key, as they're often seen standing outside of restaurants, enticing people to go in and get something to eat."

"But why would he ever want to come here and inspirit Red Snow?" Twilight raised a brow as Hungrams continued to stand completely still. "It makes no sense."

"As I said, Twilight. Yo-kai work in weird and sometimes wonderful ways." Whisper hovered over to Hungramps. "Actually, now that I think about it, you'd better deal with Hungrams before he makes me hungry too."

"He doesn't really seem like much of a fighter..." Twilight walked up to Hungramps and raised a hoof. "Uhh... Hello? Can you see me?"

"Yes. Yes, I can see you." Hungramps' voice had a lot of age behind it as he turned to face Twilight. "You haven't got any food for this old man, have you?" his stomach rumbled. "I've been dying to get my hands on something that isn't Japonese, but I must've come to the wrong house, as there's sushi, rice balls, and ramen everywhere. It's all so boring and bland, I hope you understand."

"Well, if you wanted to eat something that wasn't Japonese, then why did you come to Red Snow's house instead of going to the local Hayburger?" Twilight knelt down to Hungramps and looked him in the eyes.

"My eyesight's been failing me in recent years." He sighed and drooped his head. "Oh, how I pine for the days when I was a young and strapping Hungorge instead of a senile old Hungramps..."

"Trust me, Twilight. He was definitely not strapping in his youth, considering that Hungorges are even worse with their hunger powers..." Whisper whispered into Twilight's ears.

"He's just hungry for some food that isn't relative to Japony. I'm pretty sure that we can get him something Ponyville-themed." Twilight gave Whisper a gentle nod before she looked back at Hungramps. "Why don't I take you somewhere with some new and exciting food. Wouldn't that be exciting?"

"I suppose it's worth a shot." Hungramps slowly nodded, walking out of his corner like a penguin. "If it means I don't have to look at another rice ball, then it's fine by me. Lead the way, miss."

"See, Whisper? It wasn't that hard..." Twilight took Hungramps by the hand and gently flapped out of the house with Jibanyan following close behind. They closed the doors on their way out and didn't even look back to see the inspiriting flames vanish from Red Snow.

Red Snow looked around when she recovered from the curse and saw that she was still halfway through a sushi piece. She inwardly shrugged and finished it off before she went over to the nearby desk and wrote in her diary some more.

Twilight and Hungramps arrived at the Hayburger and walked inside, the smell of the company's commercial Hayburgers wafting through the air and hitting their noses. Both of them drooled slightly before Twilight went over to the line and waited patiently.

"Twilight! I didn't expect to see you back so soon!" Pinkie Pie came up to Twilight, wearing her Hayburger uniform and carrying a tray of food. "What's going down with you and your Yo-kai friends?"

"Oh, hey, Pinkie!" Twilight gave her a small wave. "I just came here to feed me, Whisper, Jibanyan, and a potential new friend. Nothing new, really."

"Well, my Pinkie Sense knew that you were coming around, so I already decided to whip up your favourites." Pinkie showed the tray off to Twilight and the group, and they all stared with their mouths wide open at the food. "Yep-aroonie! Just go up to the counter, tell the guys what you want, and I'll be there to serve you immediately."

"Sure!" Twilight eventually came to the end of the line and pulled out her money. "A Hayburger Smorgasboard, please."

"Certainly, Princess Twilight." The pony working at the counter nodded and had Pinkie Pie give her the tray. "It's on the house."

"Oh, there's no need for that, Deep Fry." Twilight put the bits on the counter regardless and walked off. "I don't really want to see this company struggle or for other ponies to get jealous just because I'm royalty." She left a small extra before turning back, saying, "And a tip for your services."

"Looks like my wife was wrong. I am in the right line of work!" Deep Fry smiled as he put the bits into the cash register and continued to serve the line.

Twilight, Whisper, Jibanyan, and Hungramps eventually finished their food and patted their bellies with big smiles—and a bit of ketchup—on their faces.

"Well, I really need to come here more often." Twilight looked at Whisper, Jibanyan, and Hungramps, who were quite satisfied with what they had been eating.

"Indeed! I never knew such a fast food joint could have such amazing food!" Whisper cleaned his lips with the back of his hand. "Usually, they're quite greasy and not very healthy for you, but this place is something special altogether."

"Yeah! I've nyever eaten here before, but I'm definitely coming back!" Jibanyan chirped, licking his lips to get the last of the ketchup off.

"Me too." Hungramps slowly nodded and got up from the table. "I might be an old man, but I know an act of kindness when I see one. You don't see much of that these days, considering other Yo-kai and humans, but you, Twilight, are a kind and gentle soul."

"Thank you, Hungramps." Twilight looked down at him and gently patted his head, not even noticing that he was holding a Yo-kai Medal.

"I'm just glad that I'm eating some new stuff, instead of all that bland Japonese nonsense." Hungramps let out a chuckle as he handed the Yo-kai Medal to Twilight. "Here, Twilight. You might need this. If you've ever got a food problem but can't seem to finish what's on your plate, just give me a call."

"Really?" Twilight's eyes lit up as she put the medal away in the Medallium. "Thank you again, Hungramps."

"It's no problem. If anything, I should be thanking you, for helping an old man in his time of need." He began to vanish. "I hope you'll give ol' Hungramps a call some day, Twilight."

"I will." Twilight gave him a gentle nod and watched him disappear. "See you soon."

"Your negotiation skills are improving, Twilight." Whisper gave Twilight another smile as they walked towardsd the exit. "You may even be able to talk down a Tough Yo-kai soon."

"I simply heeded Hungramps' words, and I delivered what he wanted." Twilight examined Hungramps' medal, looking at the green flower on the back of it. "It's one the easier way to resolve problems like that. You simply give to the person in need, and they not only show you mercy, but they may also want to be with you some more. I'm sure that even Tough Yo-kai have their wants and needs, and they might be hard to satisfy, but I'll do it nonetheless.

"That, and I'm not really one who wants to fight unless the opponent is just a jerk in general." Twilight shook her head. "Fighting's not really my style, but when the fate of the world comes down to it, if I need to take up arms, then I'll just have to fight."

"Wise words, Twilight. You'll want to hang onto that sentiment when that evil king comes to Equestria and tries to destroy it," Whisper said.

"Trust me, Whisper. We're all in this together." Twilight walked out of the building and pulled out her medallium. "Me, my friends, Red Snow, the Yo-kai, Jibanyan, and you. We'll face whatever comes our way and be victorious!"

"I just hope you're right, Twilight..." Whisper looked up at the clouds in the sky and gulped. For once in my life, I am scared stiff about what this king could do. Oh, why am I still obsessing over him? Who, or what is he?!

The next day, Red Snow and Twilight were sitting on top of a hill looking out at Ponyville from a distance. They saw the trees, the pegasi organizing the clouds, and the overall peace that the town was in. Both of them had been sharing conversations about what they did for fun, what their cultures were like, and how many Yo-kai that they had met overall.

"So, where does the name Red Snow come from?" Twilight asked.

"My father gave me the name to remember his days on the battle fields of Hoofujima back in 1987 AC." Red Snow looked down at her Cutie Mark. "The red part was the blood that was spilled in that great clash, and the snow part comes from how delicate the snow was beneath his hooves."

"What does AC mean?" Whisper asked Twilight.

"After Celestia," Twilight told him.

"Needless to say, he wanted to remember that battle for all of time, as it was his overall favourite. So, it was only fitting that he named me Red Snow, to remember that great battle between the Maneizo and Hoofinza clans that ultimately saved Japony from political turmoil." She showed her Cutie Mark once more. "The kanji you see represent honour, delicacy, and free. In Japony, Cutie Marks are not some silly little pictures that decide our fate. It is instead written down in small symbols, so that we have the right to choose our own paths; to carve our own destinies."

"You must be pretty glad to have a Cutie Mark that represents multiple different things, Red." Twilight nodded as she gazed at the characters. "Here in Equestria, Cutie Marks are unfortunately put in concrete, and cannot be changed once they're put there. It represents the key part of who we are, and once its' there, there's no going against it."

"How saddening." Red hung her head and let a small sigh slip. "To be chosen a destiny based on your characteristics is no real destiny at all. It is one that you make, not one that is decided."

"I completely agree, Red. I know that my Cutie Mark represents magic and a love of stargazing, but is that really all that I'm known for other than my role as the Princess of Friendship? There's gotta be something more that's out there, and I'm just not seeing it yet..."

"Well, you have the Yo-Kai Watch, so that's already a headstart on that new outlook on life." Red Snow pointed down to Twilight's Yo-Kai Watch. "Have you increased the rank yet?"

"Not really." Twilight shook her head. "With everything that's been happening to Ponyville recently, it's been hard for me to find the time to upgrade it, not to mention all of the resources that go in to improving this thing."

"Upgrading a Yo-Kai Watch is not that easy, Twilight." Red Snow looked down at her own Yo-Kai Watch. "Back in Japony, you had to see a very specific watch handiman to have the watch upgraded, and even then, you had to go through a proficiency test to improve your Yo-Kai Watch. Here in Ponyville, though, I'm not quite sure if anyone knows how to fix a watch, let alone one handed down by a species from another universe..."

"Well, Twilight, I'm no expert on the Yo-Kai Watch, but I do know that there are much more different, complex, and quite possibly even insane ways on upgrading the watch." Whisper pulled out his tablet again and showed the two ponies. "You see, a Yo-Kai Watch isn't just something that you can bang a few upgrades on in order to improve the output. The ability to see Yo-kai isn't really depicted by what you did to make the EX mode. Instead, it all comes down to how much power is put into the watch as a whole.

"But yes, as Red Snow mentioned, the first method on improving a Yo-Kai Watch is to go and see someone who knows what Yo-kai are, and how to make powerful adjustments to improve their capabilites." Whisper looked around at the buildings off in the distance. "I don't suppose that Ponyville has a Timers and More shop somewhere?"

"Nope. Sorry, Whisper," said Twilight.

"Then it looks like we're going to have to do this the old-fashioned way..." Whisper cracked his knuckles.

"Old-fashioned?" Twilight raised a brow and tilted her head to the side slightly. "Whisper, you're not making any sense here."

"As you're probably aware, there are eight tribes of Yo-kai that are known in existence." Whisper showed the tablet, revealing the eight tribes and their logos again. "Brave, Tough, Mysterious, Heartful, Slippery, Shady, Eerie, and Charming.

"Before watch repairmen existed, there was an old-fashioned way of fixing up the Yo-Kai Watch and making into a much more powerful version. And that involved collecting the medals of the eight tribes." Whisper pulled out Twilight's Yo-kai Medallium and opened it up, revealing all of the Yo-kai she had met so far. "You've befriended twelve Yo-kai as it stands, Twilight, but that's only halfway towards completing your test to getting the next Watch Rank, as we like to call it. Since you're only on 'E' rank, the Yo-kai Watch simply asks for three Yo-kai from each tribe.

"Once you have the Yo-kai you need, the watch will autmatically upgrade into 'D' rank, enabling you to see slightly stronger Yo-kai." Whisper looked at the medals for Heheheel and Jibanyan. "Now, the only reason you have Jibanyan and Heheheel's medals was because of two different reasons. A: Heheheel inspirited Rarity. B: Jibanyan rescued you from Felycan's powers. Those are the two exceptions the watch made."

"With stronger ranking Yo-kai, their powers are usually harder to break, and it may take some real talking to get through to them in the end," Red Snow carried on Whisper's explanation. "From 'D' rank all the way up to 'S' rank, the watch demands more and more Yo-kai for you to befriend, and it can get a little taxing at times. That's why we have watch repairmen all the way in Japony who kindly do it and only ask that you defeat those Yo-kai in battle."

"But since I'm not from Japony, and getting there would take a few days at least, I guess I'm stuck with the old-fashioned way." Twilight picked up her twelve medals and laid them out. She looked at the fronts, and then the backs, eyeing up all of the portraits and which tribe they came from. "Huh. I've got all these Yo-kai, but I've not made friends with any Brave Yo-kai yet."

"Brave Yo-kai are easy to befriend, Twilight." Red Snow gave her a gentle nod as she pulled out a Brave medal of her own. "Most Brave Yo-kai befriend you on the spot if they are defeated in battle. But even so, you will have to push them to a near-death state so they admit it. They don't give up for nothing, and would rather die in combat rather than of old age.

"In fact, let me test your skills out with a battle." Red Snow stood up and picked up the Brave medal. "One-on-one. Your Yo-kai versus mine." She spoke in Japonese and threw the medal into the air. "Yo-kai Medal! Set! On!" And she shoved it into the slot.

"SUMMONING: BRAVE!" Red's watch called out as red streams generated her fighter.

Sumo Shave!
Flamo engrave!
Flash team a Brave!

"Blazion! Rragh!" A lion with hair made of fire and a black jacket appeared on the battlefield, taking up a fighting stance as it landed in front of Red Snow.

"Blazion?" Twilight looked at the new Yo-kai.

"Blazion is a Yo-kai who can make people get fired up and invigorated to do even the most backbreaking and tedious labour of all." Whisper nodded. "Unlike most other Yo-kai who normally inspirit for the heck of it, Blazion is actually a kind-hearted Yo-kai who knows how to get people ready for stuff they'd otherwise shy away from doing. How fitting that he'd be used to get you to face Red Snow in combat."

"A battle, huh? Well, there's no point in fighting the opponent if they're not fired up for it!" He cast a golden inspiriting flame onto Twilight. "C'mon! Let's see some enthusiasm!"

"Alright, then, Red. You ready for this?" Twilight smiled as Blazion's powers took hold of her.

"Whenever you are." Red Snow bowed as Twilight plucked out her medal.

"Come on out, my Yo-kai friend! Calling Roughraff!" Twilight took the medal and tossed it into the air. "Yo-kai Medal! Do your thing!" Just like Red Snow, she slammed it into the slot.

"SUMMONING: TOUGH!" The watch cried out as orange beams caused Roughraff to appear.

Gruff stuff!
Rough bluff!
Red ban! Jacket stand! Bing Blang
Tough!

"Roughraff!" he slammed his fist onto the ground and eyed up his target.

"Let's do this, Red!" Twilight bowed back at her as Roughraff took his position.

"Yes. Let's do this." Red had a coy smile on her face as both she and Twilight jabbed their hooves towards each other.

"Fight!" they both said, sending their Yo-kai into battle.

"Sparring practice, eh? Sounds good to me!" Roughraff charged at Blazion.

Roughraff and Blazion both exchanged blows with each other. Powerful punches and kicks came from one another as both of them tried to beat the other in combat. They both took hard hits and recoiled at times, but the match was still fairly even.

"That all you got?!" Roughraff shouted after another power struggle between him and Blazion.

"Nope. I'm just starting to heat up!" Blazion's fiery mane got even hotter. "Yeah! I feel my spirit burning white hot! Let's get the real battle started!"

The battle resumed, with Roughraff and Blazion striking harder and faster. Both of them were even more determined than before. At first they thought they had both been inspirited, but they soon realized that they were having general fun in battling each other and being able to get stronger in the process.

"C'mon! Let's go!" Roughraff began to charge energy for his Soultimate, again weaving out of the way of Blazion's attacks by the skin of his teeth. He eventually gained enough energy and gave a malicious look to the lion. "STARE DOWN!" he said, his gaze striking Blazion with an unnatural power.

"A Soultimate, eh? That's more like it! Show off that true blazing spirit of yours!" Blazion encouraged as he too began to take in energy for his own Soultimate. "Let it burn hotter, and hotter, and hotter, until it becomes so hot that your opponent won't be able to take it!" The charge-up was complete, and his fist lit on fire as he sent it flying towards Roughraff. "BLAZING FIST!"

"Let's end this!" Roughraff roared and threw his most powerful kick at Blazion's stomach as he came in with his ignited fist. Both attacks collided, and both Blazion and Roughraff were sent flying into Twilight and Red Snow, knocking them onto their backs.

Twilight and Red Snow stayed silent for a bit, but then started to chuckle slightly as Blazion and Roughraff recovered from the impacts. The laughter gradually grew until they were guffawing at how great that the battle was.

"Oh, wow! I've never had such a fun battle in my life!" Red Snow smiled as Blazion climbed off of her.

"Me too!" Twilight slowly got onto her feet again after Roughraff climbed down from her belly. "Your Blazion's got a lot of power behind it, hasn't he?"

"As does your Roughraff." Red Snow stood up as well and gave a smile to Twilight's Yo-kai. "What a great match-up for Blazion. Undying spirit against raw power. That's what I wanted to see from you."

"Indeed." Whisper flew in front of the two Yo-kai. "That was an excellent battle between you two, Roughraff and Blazion. You should go over and give yourselves a pat on the back."

Both Roughraff and Blazion were breathing heavily, their bodies lightly bruised as they eyed up their opponent. As they looked into each others' eyes, they saw something special about them. They couldn't tell what it was, but deep down, they knew that they had become friends in their own way.

"That was a good fight, Blazion." Roughraff slicked back his hair and stood upright. "Really had me on the ropes there for a sec."

"You too, Roughraff." Blazion nodded. "I've seen some Yo-kai who don't really have much spirit when it comes to fighting, but you're something else. Once you start a fight, you're committed to it until you defeat your opponent. It's a spirit that burns on the same level as mine."

"Sparring partners?" Roughraff held out his hand.

"Sparring partners." Blazion walked over to Roughraff and shook hands with him.

"Well, that certainly blew away the cobwebs, wouldn't you agree?" Whisper came over to Twilight as she saw Roughraff and Blazion become friends. "Nothing like a good old duel between two strong Yo-kai to wake up and invigorate you, right?"

"Yeah. Red Snow's been training that Blazion pretty good." Twilight watched both Roughraff and Blazion walk over to her.

"Hey, Twilight. I have to thank you for that battle with Roughraff today." Blazion came over to her and bowed. "Not only did I get a good workout, but I saw someone who's spirits for battle burns quite hot, which is quite rare among Yo-kai these days."

"You're quite welcome, Blazion." Twilight sat down and got to Blazion's level. "Feel free to spar with my Roughraff any time you like."

"Sounds good to me." Blazion jumped up and slapped Twilight's hoof, leaving his Yo-kai Medal in it." If you need someone's spirits firing up, just let me know, K?"

"I sure will." Twilight gave Blazion a salute before he vanished along with Roughraff.

"Well now, this is certainly quite peculiar..." Red Snow looked at Blazion's medal sitting in Twilight's hooves. "I thought Yo-kai Medals were only one per Yo-kai."

"That's not entirely true, Red." Whisper came up to her. "Yo-kai can hand out their medals to everyone that they befriend, not just be resigned to one single entity. After all, do people exist just so they can have one friend, or many?"

"Many. But how would Blazion be able to be in both Twilight's place and mine at the same time?" Red Snow raised a brow once more.

"Well, Yo-kai can be pre-occupied with some things, and if Twilight does find the need to call Blazion, he has the choice to accept or decline." Whisper pointed at the watch. "Think of the Yo-Kai Watch as a phone. If they accept the call, they spring into action. They can just as easily choose not to come and leave a voicemail behind saying why they're unable to appear."

"What Yo-kai would ever want to avoid being with their mortal friends?" Twilight smiled as she put Blazion's medal into the Medallium. "It wouldn't really make any sense for a Yo-kai to say no."

"I'm sure that they would have their reasons. Be it a wedding anniversary, intense combat training, general laziness, or anything else that is more important, Yo-kai aren't just things that you can pull out of a hat. They actively choose to come to your aid and fight alongside you."

"How interesting..." Red Snow once more wrote in her diary about what Whisper was saying. "So, that makes thirteen Yo-kai you've befriended right now, Twilight. Eleven more and you'll have a 'D' rank Yo-Kai Watch."

"Well, then what are we waiting for?" Twilight slammed the book shut. "Let's go out there and make some new friends!" She ran off back into the town, cheering with Whisper by her side.

"H-Hey! Wait up! I've still got a lot to learn!" Red Snow hurriedly shut her own book and chased after Twilight and Whisper back into the town.
