Darkness Bathing
Chapter 53: Chapter 48: Pawns Go First
Previous Chapter“So what did they do again?” Artoria asks a guard who had escaped from Senbasa to come to see her.
“They executed two of the six major houses in the city as a message for who defy and break their laws.” The guard answered.
“Already? And here I thought he would keep the peace. Seems like he is living up to his title.” Artoria thinks smiling.
“What next ge…” The guard started before there was the sound of steel cutting flesh and the bloody gurgles that followed.
“I have no more use for you.” Artoria says very interestedly now in the overlord as the guard bleed out from the slit throat. Artoria thought to herself as she paced. This wasn’t like when she fought the general named Moonlight when the war started. Her opponent had advanced swiftly and took the city without even having attacked it. If it were Moonlight, the army would have to take a more cautious and longer time to get to the city and then hunker down for a siege. That was the plan anyway. She was going to let the enemy exhaust themselves and provisions sieging the city then she was going to judge if they were weak enough to charge in and slaughter them all. She cared not if the city survived or not or how much damaged her tactic had done to the kingdom in the long term. But this overlord had defied her expectations. She was unsure if it was because he was reckless, brave, foolish, or a combination of the three to advance so quickly. Surely his supply lines couldn’t have kept up with him.
Then there was this overlord. He had scared the population into revolting and doing his dirty work before surrendering. Mostly, she chalked it up to the slaves who wanted freedom and the fear his crushing of two of their armies gave him. But it was after he took the city and waited for his supply lines to reach him. He had brutally put down those who were trying to kill him, not that she blamed him. He saw a threat and dealt with it. He had punished them a lot like she would have when she was a king, but now what was he thinking? Would he chase her northwards or is it like her former father had thought. He will push east more and take some forts to allow his navy to land and deliver reinforcements, opening a third front on them again. She also was wondering where Moonlight was as they had lost track of him and his army.
Artoria was roused from her thoughts by an officer who came in. “Ma’am, our scouts have seen scouts come from the south.”
“Have they done anything yet?” Artoria asks.
“No, but we are sure they spotted our’s.” The officer informs.
Artoria hummed as she thought. ‘We can’t move north or to meet him…then I will do that.’
“Oh, this one is clever.” Sky says thinking aloud as his vanguard had returned to tell him for the sixth time they couldn’t find the enemy. “You keep feigning me, huh?” Sky asks.
“Try looking for the place where others would never expect a force to be.” Maud suggested.
“I know. She also wised up quickly too. She hasn’t been burning any of the lands as that drew us to her troops like dragons to gold…oh wait. Heh heh, he.” Sky chuckles evilly, getting a very good idea.
Maud just rolls her eyes and goes back to her book.
“Strike camp. We are marching straight north.” Sky says.
Maud closes her book now.
“What is he doing?” Artoria asks watching the army marching north, not even bothering to chase the two feigns she had launched. “He isn’t…that sonuvabitch. He is going to force me to attack him and fight or he will hit our northern army and destroy it with a two-pronged attack between him and Dark Tail’s army.” Artoria says.
“Orders?” An officer asks as Artoria tried to think she had dispersed her army to keep feigning or, in case the opportunity presented itself, hit and run, but this. This changed everything. If he ignored her completely and attacked the other army, there was a very real chance that it would be beyond use win, lose, or draw and she couldn’t do much with her forces so dispersed then it dawned on her. “So that is it, huh? Either fight me how I want it to be or I will just ignore you? Hum I wonder how your supply line will do with this?”
“Or stay in one place long enough and we would track you down!” Someone yells and, with a battle cry, attacked Artoria’s small group of soldiers with a command of his own.
‘He used himself as a decoy?’ Artoria thinks in horror as her guard and officers try to hold back the northern warrior as she spotted a mage behind their lines. ‘So that is it, huh? You knew that our magic signature is like theirs so you drew my focus with yourself as they came closer so I wouldn’t outright flee.’
Vandrad fought as hard as he could, cleaving ponies with his great axe. He was determined to complete the mission he was given. To capture this general. He didn’t question why he wasn’t ordered just to slay her. He figured the overlord wanted to grill her for information like he sometimes does. Then he tossed one away as Artoria’s steed reared about to run off away from him into the woods when he chucked his great axe as hard as he could at the steed. The next moment, Artoria fell off as it collapsed, missing its head and the axe lodged into a tree.
“Overlord would like a word with you.” Vandrad says in a gruff voice as he walks up.
Artoria knew she had lost and couldn’t escape now. So when he grabbed her, she made no move to resist before Vandrad escorted her to the army. Sky didn’t even turn to look at them approaching. He just sat on Celebrimbor smiling, knowing his plan had some form of success from the sounds of the fighting a bit away.
With the capture of Artoria, her army either dispersed or were mostly captured without an experienced commander in this type of warfare. Artoria was also quite interested to talk to Sky even for as little of time as she got. She was very helpful as well, telling him that none of the other main targets he had for this trial were here, but instead fighting Dark Tail in the north. This unnerved Sky greatly as he had noticed she had little cavalry. When he questioned one of the few officers who survived Vandrad’s attack, he had learned almost all the knight orders were with that army as they all dislike Artoria in general because of her methods. Sky wanted to start marching north immediately again, but he was forced to withdraw a few fiefs back south, knowing full well that almost all the water source in the area had to have been poisoned by Artoria like she had done all this time. In the end, even without being told, Sky could tell from her actions and everything she was trying to delay him as much as possible, not truly trying to defeat him.
By the time they were able to get north, they found Dark Tail’s army very battered from fighting the enemy who they couldn’t find having retreated to the east again, this time for the last stand. Sky also gathered that, unlike Alexander, this general was more of a warrior than a tactician like Artoria the second and not as much of a strategist as Alexander. She was more like Dark Tail in command, but what is more, she had the last remaining heroes that Fumel had sent to challenge him. One he knew nearly nothing about except what she looked like and she was a master swordsmare and then there was Jean da Arc. She was the mare who rallied the knights to their cause and served as their morale booster. The three of them together made a very dangerous combination of offensive fighting.
“Okay. We can do this.” Sky paces as he looks to Maud reading a book still while watching him. “Oh! Who am I kidding!?” Sky yells as he holds his head with a massive headache.
Maud closes her book and walks over and starts rubbing it.
“Thanks.” Sky says leaning back.
“In the end, despite our setback and those we have lost. We have held over most of the province now.” Maud says continuing.
“We are very behind though. We need to end this soon and what is more, now they will be fighting like zealots against us because of one of their three remaining heroes.” Sky says trying to think hard about how to defeat three heroes at once.
“You can do this. I have faith in you. Your men have faith in you. They know you will never put them in harm’s way unless they could win, and the people of this province are starting to rally behind you, though mostly the former slaves.” Maud says trying to soothe him. A skill she had developed over the year they had campaigned.
“I just need a plan of attack for each one.” Sky sighs in relief as he leans his head into her hooves.
“Hum…” Sky says starting to think of past battles when something came to his mind and it seemed so obvious now to him.
Maud stops a bit and looks at his expression. “You have something.”
“Maud the forecast for the next few weeks shall be foggy. Those orders go directly to our mages.” Sky says.
“And?” Maud asks.
“Get as much oil as possible.” Sky says smirking.
Artoria the first sat on the throne in the castle she had chosen for their rallying point. It had been months since their scouts had confirmed that the Overlord had met up with his army and still he had not attacked them. This she found interesting. Maybe her child Artoria the second had inflicted more damage onto his army than she had thought. She had failed to delay him before they could wipe the army out, but they had inflicted much damage on that one army. On the plus side, they had used this time to let their wounded heal and recruit some more militia, but most had been drafted. Artoria could tell the kings were scared out of their minds now. The overlord was clearly winning and they knew it. They had expected him to agree to their terms after she had won that victory so many months ago, but when Artoria had heard the terms she had hit her own head against the table she was using at the time for how ludicrous the terms were. They had acted like they had occupied most of the Overlord’s territory and his armies were destroyed.
Artoria sighed. She didn’t blame the Overlord at all for killing the envoy after hearing how he acted to him, let alone the repercussions. From what she had heard, Overlord Sky wasn’t a tyrant. In fact, he had been very generous she though all in all in the past, by letting houses keep their fiefs if they just acknowledged him as their lord. He could have just exterminated all who oppose him like that king of the slave city, but even then, he and his men didn’t kill the king. His own people did and he didn’t even kill the heir or the king’s family, he had let them live. This was, in the end, honorable in truth, but that mattered little to the side she was fighting on in the end. Just yesterday, she had heard one of the kings was found dead and they claimed it was assassins sent by the overlord who did this, but in truth, Artoria and Okita had seen right through this. One of the kings had betrayed the other and killed him for his own greed. The Overlord had no need to kill one of the kings whose territory he now held. Jaune though didn’t know this as she had busied herself too much with keeping the spirit of the knights up. And that was the problem. The knights were getting so zealotry, they were demanding they attack the Overlord and every day these demands were getting louder as they convinced more and more of the rest of the army to do this. Jaune was doing her best to control this, but by now, it had spiraled completely out of her control.
The kings had also recently caught word of this and they demanded them to attack as well. To sally out and face the overlord at his camp. This is the last thing Artoria had wanted to do. The reason is that a letter she had received from Alexander who was captured not long after sending it. It detailed how Alexander believed that Overlord Sky was a careful stallion and always looking for an advantage and to fight on ground of his choosing. She had warned her that to fight him, you want to either force his hand or make him fight where you want to fight. Artoria had taken her advice quite seriously. That is why, unlike the knight orders, she didn’t want to sally out and attack, but she knew soon she would be forced to despite her better judgment.
Artoria’s thoughts were interrupted suddenly by a scout coming in. “Report. What have you seen?”
“I apologize my lady, but this fog is too thick. I can’t get close enough to see what they are doing. A few of us tried, but they were found and ridden down.” The scout says as there was a lot of cheering starting to come from the courtyard.
“What is going on?” Artoria mutters as she walks to the window and sees the courtyard. Down below, she sees one of the knights really rallying them now and she knew this was it. They are in such a frenzy for battle they were going to charge and attack the Overlord, no matter what she would do now. “And so it begins. Order everyone to prepare for battle.” Artoria says, knowing this would be the battle to determine the war. If they win, then they would push back to Overlord’s armies and possibly impose a treaty on him in favorable conditions or they would falter and be defeated.
The march was short as the Overlord was just over the border of the two fiefs. “My lady, no sign of the enemy still.” A rider calls from the vanguard, having come into view.
“That is strange. Are we sure they are still there?” Artoria asks.
“My lady.” A wounded pegasus says crashing landing near her, many arrows embedded in his body.
“What happened?” Artoria asks concerned at the state of him.
“The overlord and his army are just north.” The pegasus says, his voice becoming quieter. “My lady, you mustn’t…” The pegasus tries to say, but his voice and his life slip away before he could finish his message.
Artoria had no time to wonder what she mustn’t do as the rest of the army hearing this started to give the order to charge forward. Then it started. The vanguard started to form up and was joined by another knight order so zealous to fight the ‘evil’ overlord, they had forgotten to wait for orders and then, when they were all lined up, they would charge. Jaune was about to go join them to boost their morale to as great as it could when Artoria held her sword out in front of her, baring her way. “You stay here for now.” Artoria informs, not liking this.
Ser Quill was smiling. This was it. They were about to face the Overlord himself. They had hurt one of his little minion’s army so much, he was forced to show his cowardly face. They were going to ride through his army and cut him down, banishing his army of evil from their lands. Ser Quill looked to his right where there was squire Flint. Ser Quill smiled as he recalled just last night the young squire boasted he would be the one to slay the Overlord.
Ser Quill knew he was in fine company and knew after they defeated this evil, they would ride and free all of the enslaved lands and even save their fellow knight orders from their brainwashing the Overlord had to have done. He was sure, today, the power of righteousness shall see them to victory and glory and a new bright golden age would dawn.
Ser Quill then heard the bugle sound. “This is it! Charge!” The knight captain calls and Ser Quill spurred his steed on, charging with the rest of the knights and lowers his helmet’s visor and steadies himself so is lance would strike true with whatever enemy they come across. They kept charging further and further, this fog making it impossible to see how far the Overlord’s army was, but he knew they were close, then it happened. Ser Quill was falling to his confusion as his steed cried out in futile surprise before both hit the ground hard. After a few moments of falling, Ser Quill’s stead died instantly from the impact and from the weight of him and his armor. Ser Quill himself wasn’t faring much better he could already tell one of his hind legs was broken as he calls out in pain as, all around him, more knights fell into this gorge with him. Hundreds of knights kept falling in the gorge. Some even killing others when they or their stead landed on them. But the worst was yet to come one somepony yelled, “THIS IS OIL!” to anyone who could register that, which weren’t many with so many deaths from the fall and those not most likely in great pain.
“Begin.” Sky says as they hear the commotion and cries of pain.
“Archers, loose!” An officer call and a few archers fired flaming arrows into the gorge they had been digging for weeks now.
All the soldiers on the other side of the gorge watch as the arrows went inside before pillars of flame came up, almost in the form of hellfire from Tartarus itself. The flame was so strong, it was visible even through the fog where Artoria and the rest of the army were. Instantly, she knew something bad had happened.
“Quickly! Around the side!” A knight calls as they tried to ignore the screams of their burning comrades. Soon the knights that were doing this, were met with a hail of arrows as siege towers started to come into view, leaving them with no cover. Then, to their horror, boulders started to fly through the inferno that burst into flames, having been covered in oil and started crushing the vanguard and some rolling right into the main army, the fog making it next to impossible to avoid them crashing or setting ablaze many of the knight and infantry.
“Mages! Clear the fog!” Sky orders after a few minutes of his catapults firing, making them stop.
Artoria and her army were stunned as the fog clear magically fast and, to their shock, the enemy camp looked more like a fortress from what little they could see as they now clearly saw the inferno and the siege towers just slaughtering their vanguard.
“First wave! Charge!” Sky orders and Dark Tail lets out a battle cry before he charges the salamander riders forward to the inferno before the Salamanders jumped over the gorge and through the fire to the other side. Thanks to the mages, they were protected from the inferno as they jumped through, although to the salamanders the fire was nothing, but to Artoria’s army, it was as if they were demons bursting through the flames from Tartus.
“For a moment there, I had thought our plan was discovered.” Sky says looking to Rainbow, Maud, and Bloom.
“Shouldn’t.” Bloom says watching the battle unfold.
“I must admit, I thought that scout wasn’t going to make it back as well.” Rainbow says as Dark Tail slammed into the enemy’s army who were scared senseless by this tactic.
“Good job you two on the temporary fire proof spell.” Sky says to Twilight and Raven.
“Only the best.” Twilight says as she kept watching.
“Send the second signal.” Sky calls and a horn was blown loudly into an opening of a tunnel in the middle of the camp.
Black Tail sliced through one knight after another, demonstrating his martial might as he was unchecked most of the way before suddenly blocking.
“What?” Dark Tail calls in shock and looks to see a robe wearing mare with a long sharp blade as she holds back his sword from cutting through her. “And who might you be? Oh. It is you.” Dark Tail says recognizing the white coat and mane pegasus mare wearing light blue and white robes.
“I see you still live.” Okita says reading her sword.
“Indeed I do. I can not die before fulfilling my duty to my lord.” Dark Tail says pointing his spear at her.
“How honorable. Shall we pick up where we were last battle?” Okita asks shifting stances.
“Dark Tail’s assault has been stopped. It must be the hero he told us about.” Sky says watching now.
“It has to be. What now?” Maud asks.
“Get to the dogs and lead them in their attack. Rainbow, get your command and take the right flank. I shall take the left. They can not be allowed any time to reorganize.” Sky informs.
“I’ll see what I can do.” Rainbow says flying off to the right.
Maud nods before heading to the tunnel before running into it. “Bloom, take command here.” Sky says before riding off on Celebrimbor to the left flank. When he arrived, every single soldier was ready. “Soldiers, are we ready?!” Sky address facing them and gets back a thunderous warcry in response from all of them. “Then on me and charge!” Sky instructs wheeling Celebrimbor around and charges. The soldiers he addressed charged with him as the ballistas fired, slamming into the enemies in range, exploding and disorienting them more as the infantry started to surge around the inferno to finish the vanguard and the archers stopped firing and moved to the next position while Rainbow and Sky charged to pincer the enemy.
Rainbow huffed as she and her soldiers slammed into the knights on the side who reeled from the attack at first, but soon rallied and started to try and push them back in a desperate melee. Immediately Rainbow knew what this meant and searched for her hard before spotting a white flag with flowers in it. “There!” Rainbow calls before her soldiers focused where she was pointing, throwing themselves desperately into the fight, making a path for their lady and selling their lives dearly if they have to. Trying to take down the knights who got them with them.
Soon Rainbow was upon her target. Jaune rode there, her appearance matching perfectly how Bloom described her as a long blond pegasus mare with a silverish coat and armor under a purple cloak riding on a wildebeest in white armor surround by a few knights who were acting as her bodyguards.
Rainbow’s course was clear and she charged forward alone, her soldiers holding back the other knights fighting for her to the last breath.
Sky sliced into the infantry who had just tried to stab him with a spear with his flaming sword Peruro. His royal guard and soldiers running rough shot over them, their morale incredibly high being lead by their leader at the front while the infantry of the enemy had been severely shaken by what had happened. The salamander and their riders burning, slicing and piercing their way forward. The cavalry of the Wildebeests doing the same minus the fire of course. Then there were Gilda’s mercenary band’s riders pelting them with arrows, javelins, and the occasional throwing axes. The three groups were both confusing and charging right through their lines where they could. The only thing was the infantry that was still not fully caught up but was about to come crashing down upon the enemy like the flaming boulders the catapults had fired earlier.
Sky smiled under his helmet as he had achieved his first two objectives. First, lure the enemy into battle on the plains. While second, stop their offensive in its track, undercutting their confidence having the tables turned on them so quickly.
Sky then started to search with his royal guard when they knew their objective. They were looking for one of the enemy’s most powerful officers or the general herself. If they couldn’t find either, they resolved to push to the main camp as close as they could to apply pressure to the enemy as much as possible to make them make mistakes.
“Overlord, look. It’s the general’s banner. It’s coming right at us!” A royal guard suddenly calls.
“Right. Royal guard, meet them head-on. Charge!” Sky calls and the royal guard immediately turned their salamanders towards the banner. They were then all spotted and when charging, they terrified the infantry of the enemy as the heavy salamanders lead the way, crushing them as they trampled over them and set them alight with their fire breath. As the two banners met, it happened. A sudden flash of silver and red met and face to face was the helmeted heads of Overlord Sky and Artoria the first. The king of the round table and the conquer who sought to end a war that is a millennium old.
“So you are Artoria the first. I am honored to meet you oh holy king.” Sky says as they disengaged and the entire fighting immediately around them stop and started to back off to give both their general and their Overlord room to fight.
“It is also a pleasure to meet you Overlord of the north, but pray tell, how do you know of me?” Artoria says as their mounts circled one another.
“I grew up hearing tales about your valor and honor. Your legacy helped inspire me to learn how to fight as a foal. You were and I dare say are still an idol I look up to.” Sky says as Celebrimbor hissed at Artoria’s wildebeest, wanting to eat it now. “Though I would like to talk more the circumstances will not allow as we are at war and I have vowed to crush Belgica and unite the entire realm under one rule and end this millennium-old war.” Sky declares catching Artoria off guard with that statement and Celebrimbor lunges at her wildebeest.
“From what I see, everything is going well.” Raven says showing Twilight and Bloom images of Rainbow, Sky, and Dark Tail fighting with a spell.
“Yes, they will be fine, but we must now deal with them.” Bloom says as the polearm soldiers and archers prepare as knights burst through the fire, obviously copying Dark Tail’s charge and aim to take the camp. “Loose!” Bloom calls and the three queens watch as their soldiers fought and died to protect them. Twilight, in particular, letting it etch into her soul for reasons that they can not fail in this war.
“You certainly haven’t gotten worse.” Dark Tail says now on the ground facing Okita as they both showed no signs of tiring, despite having fought hard for ten minutes now.
“You are not either considering you charged through our vanguard and broke our frontline.” Okita compliments, watching how bravely the Overlord’s army fights. While in the back of her mind, wondering how great a ruler he was to have his soldiers fight for him with such resolve. These were not the same soldiers they fought last time. They were fighting with fury and will that match the zealousness of some of their knights and infantry who believed this to be some divine war.
“We aren’t done yet. Phase two isn’t complete yet.” Dark Tail informs, planting worry into her mind before she felt the ground rumble a bit. “But it feels like it will be soon.” Dark Tail says before close by to them, the ground collapsed in certain places then a pause followed before the things bursting out of the holes came diamond dog warriors yelling at the top of their lungs, attacking all who were not apart of the Overlord’s army with such savagery, it pushed the infantry back immediately whether inside or outside their formation
Immediately, Okita realized what they were doing. They were trying to break the will of their forces and she was unable to do anything as if she moved to help she would give Dark Tail the opening he needs to press an advantage, if not win this duel altogether. Okita knew she had played right into Sky’s plan.
“Give up! We have you!” Rainbow calls as her sword slams into Jaune’s as she tried to defend herself against Rainbow who was clearly the superior swordsmare, having just knocked her off her mount.
“Save the lady!” Some knights call trying to charge in to save Jaune though some were stopped by the diamond dogs who jumped onto their mounts and either stabbed them to death or more horribly where one ripped off the knight’s head entirely. But for those who made it by kept charging. They were so close to attacking Rainbow then their perspective changed and were now flying through the air as Rainbow watched the wildebeest run by, the flanks and hind legs still in the saddles.
“I could have handled it you know.” Rainbow says looking to Captain Daisen, his massive greatsword covered in blood on his shoulder now.
“I know, but the overlord told me and my raiders to crush the knights and make sure you can capture your target, my queen.” Daisen informs before riding into battle, swinging his greatsword and every time he swung another knight died as a consequence. And with each kill, the raiders and Rainbow’s soldiers felt a surge of energy and morale and threw themselves back into the fight.
“Surrender.” Rainbow instruct and without even waiting for a reply jumped down and started tying Jaune up before giving her to one of her soldiers to take back to the camp to demoralize the soldiers she was facing.
“I must admit, I am thoroughly impressed.” Sky says breathing hard with a few bleeding wounds in his armor as Artoria didn’t look to have a scratch as she stood there, her wildebeest being torn apart and eaten by Celebrimbor a bit away.
“You can not beat me.” Artoria says as her soldier’s morale started to soar.
“I know. I knew going in I couldn’t beat a legendary sword master like yourself in a one on one fight. Especially with that holy sword of yours. But it doesn’t matter.” Sky says.
“You resigned yourself to death?” Artoria asks curiously now.
Sky just smirks. “If I die here, so be it.”
Artoria looks at him with interest now. “Your dream has that little meaning to you?” Artoria asks making Sky laugh.
“My dream. Even if I fall here, it shall live on. I have shared my dream with those who I call my personal friends, my queens, my people. Even if I fall here, I will have no regrets for my dream will live on and someday, someone will realize it even if it is one of my enemies here today. I have already set the wheels in motion for true unification. Even if I do not live to see it and it is still centuries away.” Sky says taking off his helmet and gets back in his stance.
‘Such conviction.’ Artoria says starting to understand now why his men fight so hard.
“But even if I fall here, the war is also mine. As we speak, my General, Moonlight, moves through diamond dog tribe territories or has already reentered Belgica lands and marches to the north. It is over. The war has been decided already.” Sky informs, unnerving all the enemy army of this before word starts traveling, starting to break what morale they had now with the worry of their families.
“…how long have you been planning this?” Artoria asks, seeing no deception in his eyes.
“After I defeated Alexander, the plan was finalized. As long as you had three powerful armies with capable leaders I knew it would not work. That is why I gambled on that siege, revealing the hidden siege ability my salamanders had to the world.” Sky says as it dawned on Artoria now.
Artoria quickly considered her options with that. If she retreated, her army would be wiped out. If she stayed and fought, there is no guarantee they would even win at this point, especially with soldiers starting to break and run from the news. And even if she did win, they would no longer have the strength to beat back the army that Moonlight would be bringing to the last bastions of their forces. Her only option to win is to take the Overlord in front of her prisoner and force a peace on him. This was Artoria’s thoughts before stopping. “Even if I captured you. You wouldn’t call off your army, would you?” Artoria asks.
“I have given Moonlight the order to step over my corpse if need be. This is checkmate.” Sky informs.
Artoria stares at him for several moments and sees within him what her master Fumel has seen before uttering words she never thought she would utter. “I surrender. Everyone disarm.” Artoria says before sticking her holy blade into the ground.
“I accept. Your surrender is worth more to me than any from those pathetic so called kings in the capital of this kingdom we are in.” Sky says before his soldiers start to yell the enemy general had surrendered to the Overlord.
The news traveled like wildfire through the army that many couldn’t believe their ears. The general had surrendered and Jaune had been captured. What little moral in the infantry shattered immediately especially those who were newly drafted and they all started to flee from the battlefield. The knight orders, however, didn’t surrender as they threw themselves in a suicidal charge at the Overlord’s army and camp. In the end, all the orders were wiped out to a stallion. Some even killing themselves instead of being captured.
A few weeks later, the last capital was under siege from both Sky and Moonlight’s armies which nearly had grown to three times its numbers from all the dogs. Sky immediately gave his demand for an unconditional surrender which the garrison didn’t immediately do. The kings though immediately start to plan to flee with the treasury from the providence all together, only to start infighting with each other over who would get it. While they fought amongst themselves, the commander of the garrison saw how hopeless the situation was and chose to surrender to Sky and open the gates on the condition Sky spared the city.
The look on the kings’ faces was a grand thing when Daisen, Dekmus, and Vandrad burst in with a few of their men and capture all of them in one fell swoop, ending the war.
Sky kept his word and spared all of the city and its citizens. For their part of unprovoked attacks against his empire, Sky forced all the kings to abdicate to those of his choice and commanded them to see to their kingdoms and obey his laws. The kings, having lost all power, were forced into retirement with the vampires secretly sending thralls to watch them carefully so they don’t plot treason. After that, the dog tribes formally swore their loyalty to Sky as Moonlight had done such a good job recruiting them to the overlord’s cause which Sky awarded them well for.
As for the dwarves, now that the war was over, Sky set upon them. Offering a full alliance to them and offering them a place in his growing empire and a seat on his council. Though a bit reluctant at first, the dwarves eventually agreed to it, seeing the benefits in this and they were allowed to keep self-governing themselves within the limits of the law.
As for the six heroes, Sky quickly put them to work as well discovering they were stuck on this plane until their bodies die. Le Chevrier was put her to work helping his spymaster, managing his spy network, and helping train new spies. Jean da Arc was asked to help tend to the populace and heal the rift she had help spread between Belgica and the rest of his empire. This task she was more than happy to do. Okita Souji was asked to be his bodyguard for now, unsure how to best use her at the time. As for Alexander the great, Artoria Pendragon the first and second, he talked with them whenever he could, learning what he could and ask questions that anyone who knew their stories would want to know like how they felt going into legendary battles and seeking their advice on topics they would have knowledge on.
Thus, Sky truly became Overlord of all of north of the mountains, much to Celestia’s displeasure.
