Chapter 42: Chapter forty one: The hunt

Nathan lay down on his side if the bed in his stallion form and sighed as Sonata curled up beside him, the eggs sitting safely on a small mountain of pillows. The two parents looked at the eggs in thought, just staring at their unborn children. "It ain't gonna be easy balancing parenthood and saving the world from a group of psycopaths and universe destroying entities." Nathan spoke while gently rubbing Sonatas side with his hoof.

"It'll be fine, we've handled Sapphire and Lyric, how bad can these five be?"

"They're all babies and some of them are gonna have a crazy aspect of my personality." He stated with a hint of sadness.

Sonata paused for a moment before closing her eyes and snuggling into her fiancé. "You're right, it's gonna be hell."

"I've been to hell Nata...it's gonna be nothing like that..."

"What?"

"It was an odd week for everyone..."

The next day

Ruby, Metal, Lyric and Twilight all walked around the city of Detrot, looking for any sign of Maniac activity. While walking past an alley Meyal saw a group of stallions surrounding two young mares at knife point. He growled and jumped into the alley. Ruby rolled her eyes and kept walking as she heard the screams of the stallions as Metal took care of business. "Aren't you gonna stop him?" Twilight asked concerned. "I mean, I know they're criminals, but surely they don't deserve...whatever he's doing to them."

They paused as they heard the sound of a saw revving up and heard the stallions scream out in pain. "They'll be fine. They'll be missing a few...important parts, but they'll be fine." After Ruby said this the stallions all ran out, their fur completely shaved off and blood between their back legs. They just ran for it as fast as they could, holding some...sensitive flesh in their hooves as they ran towards the nearest hospital. Metal walked out of the alley with the two mares riding on his back.

"Yep...just like Earths Detroit." He mumbled as the two mares jumped off of his back and planted light kisses on his cheeks before walking off. He just shrugged and kept walking.

"You sure this is where The Maniacs are gonna strike next? Seems like too low of a population for their next move." Lyric asked with concern, worried they were in the wrong city.

"I'm sure, The Maniacs seem to be random in their methods, but there is a specific pattern you can follow to see where they'll strike next." Ruby reassured her younger brother. "You have to cross out every possible option that makes sense and pick the one that makes the least sense, but then you have to do it in reverse again, they'll expect us to go to the least likely place and focus on some random target. I won't get into details, but I stayed up very late last night to plan this, just trust me."

"Is that why I kept hearing someone yell 'No that's not it! They'll expect that, they expect everything!' last night?" Twilight asked as she looked up at Ruby who had bags under her eyes.

Ruby blushed while Metal and Lyric shook their heads. "Don't you think it would be better if we split up? Cover more ground?" Metal asked.

"Only Lyric and Ruby can turn into ponies, you're always like that, you'd attracted more negative attention if you weren't with me." Twilight pointed out.

"Then have them two go one way and have us go another. We cover more ground and I don't get any more negative attention than a young white boy can get in the streets of Detroit."

Ruby covered her mouth as she tried not to laugh while Twilight just looked at them confused. "Earth hunour...too much to explain." She managed to get out in between giggles.

"Ok then...lets go Metal. If you two find anything make sure to give us some kind of signal." Twilight instructed as the two others transformed into ponies.

"It'll most likely be an explosion of some sorts given our family nature..." Lyric said unamused while he walked off with his older sister.

Metal and Twilight walked side by side in silence, Metal constantly scanning for Apocalypse Magic while Twilight made sure to keep track of anyone who looked suspicious. After a few minutes of awkward silence Twilight tried to start a conversation. "So, Metal, what was yoir world like?" She asked.

Metal looked at her then went back to looking straight ahead. "It was fine, constantly under threat of something that I away's ended up dealing with, although Luna and Dash were there to help me most of the time." He answered.

"Your worlds princess Luna and Rainbow Dash? How close were you too them?"

"Yes...they were two of my three wives...I loved them dearly and still love them. But now that I am trapped in this timeline, I am unable to see them or ascend to that timelines afterlife. I will never see my family again." He spoke darkly with his eyes closed.

"You came here to stop that timeline from happening right? But if you're still here...doesn't that mean you already failed?"

Metal sighed. "The future can't change until the events that change it actually happen, we didn't enter a parallel universe when we traveled, we went back in time, reversed the world around us, but a link to that old timeline is still there and always will be, but we cannot enter."

Twilight looked away for a moment before placing a wing in his shoulder. "I'm sorry...I didn't mean to bring up painful memories."

"It's alright..." Metal looked around and finally locked onto a strange energy source. "...Just being in a city like this brings back bad memories."
