Chapter 2: Two
Previous ChapterPonyville Cafe
Saturday, 8:25 a.m.
Ponyville Cafe. The citizens of Ponyville loved what the cafe had to offer. Hot latte coffee, chocolate mud cakes, macarons, you name it. Ponyville Cafe was established not long ago. It was run by a pegasus mare named Mocha Delight. Her mane was medium length and deep black in colour, with a bit of cream white on it. This was the same with her curved tail. Her skin was, well, mocha coloured. Mocha's eyes were two glowing emeralds. Her cutie mark resembled as a simple mug of coffee with a teaspoon in it. Mocha was well admired for her appearance and many of her customers would act flirty around her, but she would usually reject them.
However, there was one stallion who would grab her attention most of the time. It was Nighthawk, the sporty pegasus stallion who was coming through the cafe's door. Nighthawk was one of the wrongly accused Synergy Inc. agents who were fired. He was tall and a dark brown colour. His mane was short and was almost the same hue as Mocha's body. Nighthawk would often wear his favourite accessory and that was his right white arm band. His cutie mark was a figure of a bird, ready to catch its prey. You couldn't call him Nighthawk for nothing.
As he came towards the counter, he took a deep breath, ready to talk with her. Nighthawk was usually flirty with other mares, especially pegasi. 'Hey, um, hi Mocha.' Nighthawk started, trying to stay in character.
'Nighthawk. Hey there.' Mocha replied with a smile.
'Um, I just want you to know that I wish you well on your new career.'
'Thanks. I appreciate your support for me. How's you career going? I heard you were fired from Synergy.'
Nighthawk felt utterly humiliated inside, but managed to maintain his calm face on the outside. He kept his sacking from Synergy a secret for a very long time. If anypony dare found out what he was currently doing other than work in order to gain money, he would be in deep, deep trouble.
'Oh, about that, I'm in a different career at the moment. I'm officially working with... The Wonderbolts! How do you like that?' Nighthawk lied.
Mocha gasped in amazement and her eyes grew wide. 'Damn! Really? That career suits you, a lot. Anyways, what would you like, my little Wonderbolt?' she said seductively.
Nighthawk chuckled nervously. 'I'd like one blueberry muffin please.'
'Sure! That's for two bits.' Mocha opened the small glass window of the food storage, grabbed the muffin and handed it to Nighhawk. He then gave two golden coins with a letter B engraved on one side, and Princess Celestia's head engraved on the other in return. This was Equestria's currency.
'Um, Mocha. There's something I wanted to tell you and I've been keeping it a secret for a long time.' Nighthawk took a deep breath. 'I...I...I love you're tasty treats you have for sale! Hehe! They're sweet, like you, m'lady.' He was meant to confess his crush on her, but chickened out.
'Aww, how charming!' Mocha replied.
'Anyways, see you later!' Nighthawk said, as the headed out of the cafe through the door.
Mocha Delight just stared at him as he walked out. 'Isn't he gorgeous?' she she said to herself.
Nighthawk sighed in relief. If Mocha found out that he was part of a street racing club in Canterlot, he would lose his respect from her, and all of his other pony friends. 'Well, that went smoothly. Me? With the Wonderbolts? That sounds ridiculous. I'm more of a bodybuilder than a nimble flyer. I might as well be just... you know, an earth pony!' Nighthawk said to himself. He began to take huge chomps out of his delicious blueberry muffin and devoured it in seconds, along with moans of deliciousness.
'So, Hawk. How are you and your love bird doing at the moment, eh?' teased a voice from behind. Nighthawk turned around with his muffin held in his mouth, to see a red unicorn with a brighter red and yellow mane and tail. The unicorn had a speedometer cutie mark. He was also leaning his back against the smooth grey brick wall.
'Redline. Long time no see pal.' Nighthawk then walked over to Redline. 'Yeah. Mocha and I are doing well thank you. What about you and Beats?'
'What about Beats and I?' said Redline, pretending not to remember about his crush on Beats, a mare who was fired with him and Nighthawk. Redline abhorred being teased about his relationships with other mares.
'Are you two officially dating?' Nighthawk teased back.
'Hell no! We're just friends, okay?!'
'...with benefits?' he teased once again.
'NO! Stop it you!' Redline snapped, but in a somewhat comical manner.
'I know for sure that you like her. Stop denying it already and just express your true feelings for her!' said Nighthawk.
'Like you've done that yourself.'
'Right, right. I suppose so.' Nighthawk responded, embarrassed.
'So now, coming to the race tonight?' questioned Redline. 'It's gonna be like our own mini festival, you know? Loud music, drinks, dance performances and most importantly - all those badass looking tuners ready to burn some rubber. What do you say?'
'I'm totally in.' answered Nighthawk, without hesitation. He always looked forward to those street racing events in Canterlot. It was a guilty pleasure for both of them, since stuff like that was illegal, but they had no choice. Racing in the streets of Equestria's capital city once every month to win thousands of Bits was a breathtaking experience for them.
'It's a deal, right?.' agreed Redline, as he shook Nighthawk's hoof. Keeping their hooves held together, Redline put his head against Nighthawk's and stared into each other's eyes. 'We're gonna do things the hard way tonight. In the past, I've been taking it easy on you guys. But now, you'll witness my insane driving skills in its full glory.'
'I know that you're a challenging and enthusiastic unicorn, but you'd better prepare for the worst.'
'Pfft. You think I need preparation for the worst? I doubt that I'll be facing "the worst".' They separated their heads. 'I got everything I need! My badass-looking Toyota and my skills.' said Redline.
'You probably haven't tasted defeat before, have you? Is that all you got? I have my skill, strategy to win, persistence, confidence, modesty, sportsmanship and my one and only deadly racing machine.'
The two friends were hard working ponies. They would work day in, day out in order to achieve their dreams. However, there was a difference in between the two. One pony was full of vanity and pride, while the other pony was smart enough not to underestimate the obstacles, and you could guess who was who.
'Bringing your date along with you Romeo?'
'Yes, and I told you to STOP PAIRING US!' Redline yelled.
