Chapter 7: The Scientist Part B: We're saving this district!
Previous Chapter Next ChapterSpike crossed his arms at the guard.
"Listen," Spike said "you're stuck here until this quarantine is over. That can take weeks. What you need is to get this problem solves ASAP. That's what I do: I solve problems. Let my crew and I in, and we'll get this district straightened out."
"You think you can fix this?" the guard replied. "Sure, why not? The quarantine is more to keep infected people in, anyway. I'll radio ahead, tell them you're coming in."
"Wait," the woman spoke "you're stopping me but not them? You son of a bitch!"
"You don't a gun with you, lady. Now get lost!" The woman grunted to herself and marched away. Spike turned around to his companions.
"I'm just glad we're immune to this plague." Diamond Tiara stated.
"Eeyup." Big Mac added.
"Come on." Spike said, leading his two companions into the district.
The district looked almost like everything else inside, but there was a lack of people around. Spike and the crew turned the corner to see a make shift barricade in the middle of the hallway. One of the guards held his sniper up, but another came up.
"Don't shoot!" the guard yelled "They're cleared to come in." Spike nodded and continued his path to the district. A guard stood next to the door to the district, but he nodded his head to let them in.
"Good luck in there." He said "The Wizards and the Lycans are shooting at anything that moves." The three entered the plagued district, Spike taking cover behind some crates while Diamond & Big Mac took cover behind some railing. Standing were two men in blue armor and had white, ancient looking patterns all over their suit.
"Wizards." Diamond Tiara whispered.
Group Profiles:
The Wizards are a group of mercenaries that are mostly made of Mages, certain humans, and certain mutants. The title wizards are given to people who have really high G.P.A's, but due to the Galaxy's low employment on 'smart people', these people use the second bast option to earn bits: organized crime. They've been known to hack through security and blackmail people through intel they've collected about them, making them one of the three most powerful gangs in the galaxy. If not for the security & intel, they've also been known to completely delete someone's history both life wise & money wise, making them a force to be reckoned with for anyone trying to make a business or any celebrity.
"Take them out quickly." Spike said. They quickly got out of cover and fired at the two guards. The two turned, only to be shot with bullets, then fell to the floor, dead.
"Got them." Spike commented to himself. The sound of someone groaning got their attention. Turning to his right, Spike saw a lone raptor, resting on the wall, couching to himself.
Species:
Raptors were originally made by Angels, using volunteers & criminals of their own kind to gain more bird like attributes. The process was a success in a way, though many feel that Raptors are just Angels born from eggs and have eagle talons for hands & have lion like legs with tails. When the war ended, the Raptor population skyrocketed, and though they aren't necessarily an original species, they are now a subspecies to Angels. Raptors can fly like an Angel, though they're not as fast, which is made up in both their strength and combat. They're known to have short tempers, are greedy, and are stubborn, but can be caring for one another and still care for their young, even they don't show it.
Spike walked to the raptor, who coughed to himself.
"Y-You're a Draco... with humans." The Raptor stated, coughing hard. "Bad enough your follower's kind infected us with this plague. Now you lack the decency to wait until I die before you can steal my stuff... greedy bastard."
"I'm not here to do that." Spike replied, kneeling to the Raptor "Is there anything I can do for you?"
"GET AWAY FROM ME!!!" The raptor pulled a pistol out at Spike "You've done your part! Their plague did this to me. Your feigned pity is the final result."
"Are you sure? The Humans didn't create this plague."
"...Lies drip from their mouths like the blood from my sores. The proof is all there to see. Their species is the only one that didn't succumb to the virus. Them, and the wretched Lycans."
"They didn't create this! Anyways, I'm looking for a doctor here, said to come in some sort of blue box."
"Looking for that other human? I hope the Lycans burn that clinic with him to the ground!" He began to cough more frequently "I hope you... I hope... damn it. Damn you... can't-" Spike kneeled down and slapped his face.
"HEY!!! Stay with me! This won't cure the plague, but it might help a bit." Spike handed the Raptor some Medi-Gel. He accepted it and rubbed it all over his bleeding areas. He got up to his feet, though weakly.
"You... you helped me. Why?"
"It's what I do. I don't know if I can find a cure for this plague, but I'm gonna try."
"Your words... sincere. Maybe it's the fever, but as you said, what have I to lose? What do you want to know?"
"Well, why are so convinced that the humans are behind this?"
"The plague is too potent to be a naturally occurring virus. Airborn transmission across numerous species? Near-perfect Mortality rate? Had to be made in a lab. And since the humans aren't affected by it, it's only a logical conclusion."
"But aren't the Lycans immune to the plague? What if they spread the virus so they could take over this district?"
"The Lycans are immune. A Human created plague wouldn't affect them, but if the Lycans created the plague, why wouldn't it affect humans? Besides, the Lycans are too stupid to create something like this: they're scavengers. Sorry, Draco. You may not believe it, but all the evidence points to the humans."
"I still don't believe it. But you were talking about the Lycans?"
"Yes. Before the quarantine, the wizards controlled this district. But as their numbers fell, Lycans moved in. The Wizards are fighting to protect their territory, but as the plague spreads, it's only a matter of time until the Lycans overwhelm them."
"Makes sense. But I need to find that human called 'The Doctor'."
"He has a clinic on the far side of the district. He's taking in refugees and offering help to those infected with the plague. I was afraid to go to him before. Seems dangerous, but perhaps he can help."
"What makes him dangerous?"
"The Wizards tried to press him for protection money. He killed them by trapping them in a room and used a toxin. He's not a doctor doctor. Real Docs don't execute people and display their bodies as warnings."
"Don't worry. When we find him, we'll tell him about you. If he has a cure, I'll make sure someone gives it to you."
"...Thank you. My time is running short, but at least you gave me a flicker of hope to brighten the darkness of my final hours. I don't want to die. Whatever his is, I'll risk it, if he can reach me."
"Thank you for that information."
"Goodbye, Draco. What shall I call you?"
"...The name's Spike." Spike, Diamond Tiara, and Big Mac all walked away with the Raptor having a surprised look on his face.
"He's... alive!?"
The three walked into a larger room with a second floor, but stopped and took cover behind a pillar, seeing some Wizards behind a makeshift cover.
"We can attack them upstairs." Diamond suggested.
"Sounds good." Spike replied. They all walked upstairs and took cover behind a wall that served as a window for people to look down, or in their case, an easy way to pick off their targets below. Spike gave the countdown with his fingers as his helmet went up & prepared him for combat. They all got out cover and fired at the mercs below, most stammering backwards as their shields were lowered and others fell to the floor, dead from a clean shot to the head. Some of the Mercs ran to the other wall on the bottom floor, though a good half fell from Big Mac's quick draw headshots. The rest of the mercs fought back, but were quickly downed by the Draco and the two humans.
"Let's head back downstairs."
"Yup." Big Mac replied. The three went downstairs and around the makeshift wall, but stopped.
"Are they gone?" A woman's muffled voiced asked on the other side of a door.
"Quiet!" A man's muffled voice replied "They're probably looking for us."
"Survivors?" Spike asked. He walked to the door and tried to open it, but nothing happened. "Dammit!"
"Allow me." Diamond Tiara replied. She went to the computer and began to type some stuff, humming to herself. "And... there!" The door opened.
"Good work."
"Thank you, Commander." Spike and the others entered the door, seeing it lead into a private apartment. They walked inside, hearing some footsteps running from them. They turned a corner and found a couple, a human male & female, together.
"Oh thank God!" the woman yelled "Two humans and their Draco!" Spike grumbled to himself as his helmet opened to reveal his face.
"When we saw that door open," the man added "We thought those mages found us." Spike walked to the couple, holstering his weapon. "Ever since this plague started, the wizards have been sent out to get us. They're killing as many people as the disease."
"Why are the Wizards hunting you?" Spike asked
"We didn't do anything!" The woman practically yelled "Pretty much every Non-Human in this district wants us dead!"
"They think we caused the plague." The man added "Humans aren't getting sick and that's the only evidence they need. God only knows how many of us they've killed already."
"They should be looking at the Lycans, not us! Ever since the plague hit, they've been taking over Wizard territory."
"You said the Lycans moved in after the plague hit?" Spike asked
"Right after the district was quarantined." The woman corrected. "Lycans are immune to diseases, so they're not getting sick."
"I'm not sure where they came from," the man added "I've never seen so many Lycans before. Sure seemed like they were ready for this."
"Only nobody thinks the Lycans are smart enough to create a virus like this. The wizards needed someone else to blame, like us."
"Hold on," Spike began to ask "You said the Lycans are taking over wizard territory?"
"Trying to." The man corrected "The Wizards don't go down easily. The plague softened 'em up, but they still have enough firepower to hold some of their turf. The Mages are getting pushed back. The deeper you go into the district, the more lycans you'll see... unless they see you first."
"I'll keep that in mind." Spike replied "What else can you tell me about the plague? When did it start?"
"The first cases cropped up to two weeks ago. Nobody paid much attention to it until it began to spread. Usually takes about a weeks to kill you, but it spreads fast. Three days after the first outbreak, there were over fifty known cases."
"That when everyone noticed humans weren't getting sick." The woman added "Then the quarantine came down, and everything went to hell."
"Any idea how the victims got sick?" Spike asked
"Not sure." The man answered "Probably airborne. Even after the wizards started sealing victims up inside their apartment, the plague kept spreading. Now they just gun victims down and burn their bodies on the street. Doesn't seem to be helping, though, people are dying by the dozens."
"There's a lot of things with the Wizards in these things. Can you tell me about them?"
"They're a mercenary gang, mostly mages. They used to run this district, kept everything nice & stable, for the most part."
"As long as you paid your monthly fees," the woman added "everything was cool. Rates were pretty reasonable, for here at Manehatten's slums at least."
"Then this damn plague hit! Everyone started to die, lycans started to move in, wizards lost control, and this whole district turned into a warzone."
"That's crazy." Spike commented "Anyways, I'm looking for the man that calls himself 'The Doctor'. He appeared in a blue box."
"Oh, yeah, him. He's got a clinic on the other side of the district."
"Heard he's taking in refugees now," the woman added "trying to help plague victims; offering protection from the wizards and the Lycans."
"Sure: A doctor with military-grade mechs helping people for free, here? Grow up."
"Sounds like you don't think much of the doctor and his clinic."
"The lycans tried to muscle in. He trapped them in a containment unit and gassed them. Didn't even use his mechs."
"Then the wizards heard he was sheltering other humans," the woman added "And they went to burn down his clinic. He killed them too! He just went back inside and went back to work. He must've been with someone from a special task group on earth to be like that."
"He does sound dangerous," Spike replied "but you can't stay trapped in this apartment. If you get to the Doctor, you might at least survive until the quarantine is over."
"Are you nuts!? We'd never make it: the streets are crawling with Wizards & Lycans. We don't have any pistols!"
"Besides," the man added "I'm not risking my life on a rumor that some stranger might offer me sanctuary."
"Look," Spike replied "I know you're scared, but your only hope is to get to the Doc's clinic. I'm going to be under fire from Wizards and Lycans, so I can't take you with me. But I will promise you this: I'll do whatever I can to lave a safe path for you to follow me. It's risky, but it may be your only chance."
"...Okay... you're right. We probably won't make it if we stay here. We'll try. We'll wait here for a while and give you time to clear the way, then we'll head to the Doc's clinic. If we're lucky, then maybe we'll meet you there."
"Good to know." Spike turned around and began to walk away.
"Wait!" The woman yelled. Spike stopped and turned his head.
"Yeah?"
"What is your name, Draco?"
"... It's Spike. Commander of Division M6." Spike walked away, snickering to himself as he heard the two whisper to each other, asking how he's alive.
The two walked into a hallway behind the makeshift guard, but stopped as they heard gunfire.
"Upstairs." Spike ordered. The two went up the stairs and took cover behind, peeking to see the battle below. The Wizards used their Mage abilities to throw the Lycans around, but the lycans outnumbered them easily, and, though a bit unexpecting, the Lycans had two Behemoths in armor & wearing gas masks on.
Species:
Behemoths are considered, next to Drakes, the most largest & heaviest species of the galaxy. The average behemoth is around eight feet tall and can weigh up to half a ton, already making them more intimidating than they are. They're known to live on planets that are mostly barren deserts & survive, and are usually seen in tribes very similar to that of Earth's Native Americans. Despite their large size, they're able to lift object weighing up to a ton and can run speeds up to 40 Miles per hour for a few minutes. They aren't the most intelligent species of the galaxy, but have a sense of honor to themselves & their group, and have a warrior like spirit in combat, choosing death rather than living with loss. Most Behemoths think of all other species as infidels, easily taking over Lycan groups for their own needs, but they respect Drakes, as history finds that both Behemoths and Drakes were mutualistic.
The Wizards all fell dead, and the Lycans & two Behemoths cheered.
"Looks like we're going to crush their victory!" Dimaond Tiara spoke with a grin.
"Eeyup." Big Mac agreed.
"Yeah." Spike replied, his helmet going up. "ATTACK!!!" All three fired at the lycans & behemoths below. Many of the Lycans below died upon impact, but the Behemoths took the bullets and fired at them with shotguns.
"Focus all firepower on those two!" Diamond yelled
"Are you giving the orders, or me?" Spike asked
"Just shut up and do it!" All three fired at one of the two behemoths, his shields going down easily and soon, after many shots to his body, he fell to the floor, dead. The other behemoth saw his ally fell and ran back, taking cover behind some crates. Spike jumped over the balcony and rolled on the floor.
"Commander!" Big Mac yelled. Spike grabbed the shotgun from the dead behemoth and cocked it. The live behemoth got out of cover and fired at Diamond Tiara & Big Mac above. Spike rolled out of cover and fired at the behemoth, catching him off guard! With the help of Big Mac & Diamond, Spike quickly finished off the behemoth with his new shotgun. A door opened and more Lycans came in, all firing at Spike and his allies. Both Big Mac & Diamond jumped off the balcony, rolled on the floor, and took cover behind some crates as well.
"You're an idiot!" Diamond yelled, firing at a lycan near them.
"At least I didn't say 'I call shotgun'." Spike replied, firing and killing a lone Lycan, blowing it's head entirely off! Big Mac took the other Behemoth's shotgun and fired at the Lycans after them.
"Eeyup." He simply said. All the Lycans were dead.
"That's the last of them."
"We better hurry," Diamond said "don't want you killed by some idiot move until we head to the Doppelganger home world. They walked downstairs until they heard voices in another room.
"You think this is good?" A male voice asked
It better be!" Another man's voice replied. Spike entered the room, a bit surprised that it wasn't locked at all. They walked down until they entered another apartment, seeing one man looking over and another man kneeling & looking for something.
"Hey, hey, hey!" the standing one yelled "Back off, we got here first!"
Looters. Spike said to himself. He walked to the man and holstered his weapon. The kneeling man was searching a dead mage, male by the looks of it.
"Hey, what did I say!? We found this stuff, it's ours!"
"Forget it," the kneeling one spoke, getting up "nothing but junk in here. This place is worse than the last one."
"What are you doing it this apartment?" Spike asked with a low growl. "Did you kill that mage?"
"What?" the first man asked "The guy on the floor? Nah, the plague took care of him. We're just here to take a full accounting of all his other worldly possessions."
"By stealing from the dead? That's pretty low."
"What's the big deal? It's not like he's going to miss anything. We're just showing a little... entrepreneurial spirit. The plague doesn't affect humans, so we may as well cash in."
"Besides," the second added "if we don't take this, the lycans or wizards will. Better us than them, right?"
"No." Spike replied "I want you both to stop looting, got it!?"
"Or what?" the first man asked "You gonna shoot us?"
"I've killed people for less, does that answer your question?" The two began to sweat a bit, seeing Spike was serious.
"Uh... I don;t think he's kidding." The second spoke.
"You bet your ass I'm not!"
"Hold on!" the first yelled "Nobody needs to shoot anybody! We're stopping, okay? We just wanted to make a quick buck. It ain't worth getting killed over! We're done, seriously, I swear!"
"Good. Now with that over, do you know of a man called 'The Doctor'? Appeared in a blue box?"
"Yeah, we know him. He's right around the corner. Take plenty of ammo if you go that way: it's crawling with wizards and lycans."
"Thank you for that info."
"Your welcome. Let's go man, we better hide before more come." The two men rushed out of the room, then followed by Spike and the others.
The three entered a hallway and saw a clinic sigh above. They holstered their weapons and entered the hallway, seeing two mechs standing at the door and a lone human guard.
"No funny business once you're inside the clinic," the human spoke "unless you want to deal with these mechs."
"Got it." Spike replied.
"Of course." Diamond added with a bow.
"Eeyup." Replied Big Mac. The three entered, seeing a couple of human doctors around, though not a lot to tend to the other injured species.
"Who do we tell is 'The Doctor'?" Diamond asked.
"Doctor!" Another Doctor yelled
"'Allo?" A man in a blue suit but wearing a brown trenchcoat replied.
"One of the patients is losing oxygen!"
"Not on my watch!" He ran ahead, wearing red sneakers, and went to a lone mage, breathing hard as her heart monitor beeped everywhere. He pulled a strange device out that looked liked a metal pen, but it began to glow blue. in a few seconds, the heart monitor beeped normally, and the mage began to calm down. "There you go. Please, relax, I'm here to help."
"That answers our question." Spike said to Diamond. He walked to the man. "Doctor?" The man turned around.
"Commander Spike!?" He asked in shock "How did you-? Wait! Hold still!" He pulled his machine out and aimed it at Spike. "Ah! Of course! Simple rewiring and some cybernetics! Classic! Have full control of your body as normal, normal mind, some extra parts... hmm... F.I.S.T. made? Of course! That woman! Diamond Tiara, is it?"
"... Did he drink coffee before?" Diamond asked
"And you! Big man! Big Macintosh! Tall, strong, but silent; never boasted about yourself at all. Good man! Smarter than how you make yourself look!"
"...Eeyup?" Big Mac replied, though a bit freaked out.
"All of you, sent here to clear plague? No, can't be, not enough people, need something to bigger and more-"
"For the love of God!" Spike yelled "Take a breath! I came here to find you, okay? I'm Commander Spike: I'm on a critical mission and I need your help."
"Oh... sorry. Got excited. But I have to stop this plague first."
"This is far more important than these people!" Diamond yelled "Sombra has an army of Doppelgangers and he's abducting humans, mages, and angels alike!"
"Hold on... OF COURSE!!! How'd I forget! Crucial moment in history! Please, though, you need to help me out here. If I leave with you, all of these innocent people are going to die, so I'm sorry to say, but we need to stop this plague right now! I already have a cure ready (had to examine particles) and I'm sure you three can help me on that. I need to stay here and help these people out. The Oxygen carrier is a bit down the lane: place the antidote in the oxygen machine and turn on the power on both sides. And... if you can... my daughter... she's out there and I will forever be in your debt."
We'll take care of this.
You're coming with us.
We're leaving them.
