Dragonfire
Chapter 6: The Scientist Part A: A Distraction.
Previous Chapter Next Chapter"Spitfire?" Spike asked
"Yes, Commander?" Spitfire replied through the intercom.
"Take us to Manehatten. We're going to get the scientist."
"Got it! Hold on tight everyone, this is going to be a bumpy ride! Let's see how this baby does." Spike held his grip on the map, looking at the map. A large force was felt in his gut, as he was pushed back a bit, but nothing too strong to throw him back to the wall. All around him, he could see the various people holding on to the rails around the walls, but some of the people were sitting down in seats, only being pushed back a bit. He could only think that Big Macinstosh only stepped a foot back & standing or leaning against the force, Diamond wasn't exactly faded & was still typing her stuff down, Mrs. Cake may be holding the counter to her kitchen from support, Mr. Redheart may be sitting down almost like Diamond, but holding onto her seat for life, and the brothers below holding onto either their consoles or the rails. After a few moments of holding on, the ship stopped, forcing the opposite reaction of everyone being pushed forward. Spike walked to Spitfire, seeing, out of the window, Manehattan.
Locations:
Manehattan is considered second rate to Canterlot: it's a booming planet that holds many businesses & political power, but it's filled with a lot of crime & corruption than to Canterlot's near to none rate. The planet itself is divided into three sections: the top & most visible is the more welcoming & holds the most richest civilians. The second section is below & is where most families, along with people who have started their business & are doing well. The bottom is the slums area & is considered to be both the most dense area and is where most of the crime happens. Despite the high crime rates, Manehattan still receives a large amount of tourists who wish to see what was the human's planet sized & famous city, Manhattan.
Both Big Mac and Diamond walked right behind Spike, looking at the planet ahead.
"So we're getting the Doc?" Big Mac asked
"We need some countermeasure against Sombra's fear gas." Spike replied "I don't want to relive that nightmare I had before."
"Very understandable," Diamond replied "I'm pretty sure most of us don't want to live our nightmares at all."
"Care to tell us who our Scientist is?"
"Can't really say," Big Mac replied, pulling out the files "He calls himself 'The Doctor' and he, along with our Archangel, are in the slums section."
"Why are they both there?"
"My Scanners show that 'The Doctor' is helping patients out with a disease here." WOONA replied.
"And our Archangel?"
"I do not know."
"We'll find out soon enough." Diamond spoke, pulling out a pistol and cocking it.
"I've got to find some parking first!" Spitfire yelled in anger. "If you want to jump out, the door's to my left! If not, shut up and wait!" Everyone stood silent.
"Where... do I get my armor?" Spike asked, breaking the silence.
"Near the exit's door." Diamond answered "Don't worry, WOONA will put it on for you." Spike crossed his arms
"I'd rather put my armor on rather than be babied."
"With what we're going to do," Big Mac spoke "you may want to consider it. Plus, while you did put it on & used it in combat, it can't hurt just to get help from an A.I."
"Plus, you'll still be in your clothing." Diamond added. Spike looked at the two and sighed in defeat.
"...fine."
Spitfire eventually found where she can park the ship & allow the Celestia to recharge. Spike, Diamond Tiara, and Big Mac all got out of the ship, only to see what was the slums of Manehatten: Though not a lot of light came down, the sky looked as if it were blood red after a war & troops were tending to their wounds, as all around them were homeless people begging for some bits, a couple of people publicly doing drugs, run down buildings that looked very ancient, and ships that were barely operating with only one or two good looking ships flying by. Surprisingly, the thing Spike took notice of was the species that occupied this area the most: Lycans.
Species:
Although Lycans look a lot like medieval werewolves, they are not as feared as the fictional depictions of a wolf-human monster, and are laughed at by most of the galaxy, though not nearly as much as Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" books' depictions of werewolves. There is no real origin to their species, nor any home planet they call, but it's theorized that in early Equestria, they were a primitive species that were taken from their planet and made into slaves until Celestia declared it illegal. Though free, Lycans have poor intelligence, tend to live underground, and work at any job, never thinking about the risks and rewards with such dangerous tasks. Very few break this boundary, however, as Lycans have a life expectancy of only twenty years, the oldest ever recorded being 32 years. Becuase of how Lycans act, they have few employment options with the exception being scavengers, miners, and becoming the galaxy's criminals.
"What a pisshole." Diamond commented "I had to make some business trips here to find the scientists needed. Felt like I needed a shower afterwards."
"According to my scanners," WOONA spoke "While the police has very low numbers, they are all currently making sure anyone doesn't enter nor exit a contained area that is approximately a 2 miles long. It seems that they want this plague to pass and make everyone inside die."
"Why the hell would they do that?" Big Mac asked "Ah though the police were meant to protect and serve."
"Obviously," Diamond replied "some group bought off the police here and is doing whatever they're doing in the quarantined area. Obviously, it's to kill, and perhaps loot, but my real question is simply why?"
"We're going to find out." Spike spoke.
"Hold on just a second!" A disgruntled sounding voice spoke. The three turned to see what was a human, about as tall as Big Mac but not as built, had black hair, and wore a gamboge vest with blue pants. "Ah! Big Mac! It's been a long time since you've been here. Everything good?"
"...Eeyup." Macintosh replied
"Ah! Still the same silent man, even after all these years."
"And who are you?" Spike asked, crossing his arms
"Excuse me, Mr. Draco. The Name's Cherry Fizzy, or Cherry Coke with friends. Please, you three are needed to my boss's V.I.P. Lounge."
"And if we don't?" Diamond Tiara asked. At that mention, small, red lasers were pointed at their heads, helping whoever is aiming at them, waiting to kill them.
"Then your first visit here will be your last. Please, come."
"Looks like we don't have much of a choice." Spike sighed to himself, following the human.
"You really know this man?" Diamond asked to Big Mac.
"...Business." He replied.
"Did I hear something other than a 'Yes' and 'No'!?" Cherry asked "HA! Your words are getting better! Who knows, you can probably buy something at any fast food restaurant now!"
The three entered what was a nightclub with a brighter shade of red than the outside land, with a couple of bars serving to patrons, dancers from not just patrons, but some strippers as well, some tables where people were sitting at & talking with each other, and security around with weapons ready. They walked upstairs, still following Fizzy, and with his back turned & looking at the club below, was another human male, with two other guards next to him. From what Spike could tell, this was an elderly looking man in his 50's, has gray hair, is wearing a beige polo shirt with gambogeish gray pants.
"That's close enough." He spoke. Just hearing his voice, Spike recognized now, from Twilight & her friend's adventure & some autologs from A.K. Yearling/Daring Do herself, this was Dr. Caballeron!
Profiles:
Dr. Caballeron was once a famous archaeologist & trader who, after years of exploring temples, allowed his greed to get the best of him. Originally the father figure to Daring Do, who trained her how to survive many booby traps & taught her the history of various, extinct cultures that have since been extinct, he became one of the many great Enemies Daring has battled in her adventures. With his old age & frail body, he now relies on cunning strategies, the best equipment, & a cheap source of labor to find any treasure and sell it on the black market. Now, he runs a nightclub in the wards of Manehatten, keeping a tight fist over both it's money and it's people.
One of the guards walked to Spike and began to scan him.
"If you're looking for weapons," Spike spoke, pulling out his pistol "then you're not doing a very good job."
"Can't be too careful with dead soldiers." Caballeron replied "That can be anyone wearing your face."
"Hold on, you know I'm dead!?"
"They're clean." The guard simply spoke, walking to the left side of the room. Caballeron turned around, showing his much longer beard and clear, wrinkled face.
"I paid good money to get a copy of your DNA." Caballeron spoke
"So you run the slums?" Spike asked. Caballeron chuckled to himself.
"I am the slums. But you need more, everyone needs more, and they all come to me. I'm the boss, CEO, King (if you're dramatic). Doesn't matter. These slums have no ruler and only one rule." He took a seat down on a chair & table, placing his arms on the table. "Don't fuck with Caballeron."
"...Easy. I'll follow."
"I'm so glad you will, Spike. Please, take a seat." Spike lazily dragged a nearby chair with his feet and sat in front of Caballeron. Diamond and Big Mac stood next to Spike. "So, what can I do for you?"
"One scan and we're doing business? I figured people will be concerned or freaked out to see me walking around."
"Your death was live and not a secret at all. You're special, so people will bring you back to life or follow your footsteps. I hate seeing people acting like their heroes, especially at those Comic Con conventions."
"Not comfortable seeing people in costumes other than Halloween?"
"Yes. Listen, whatever you need will come out on its own. I'm curious how you're alive, but no one else will know nor care."
"Well you must know what's happening in these parts."
"Only things that are worth knowing. I don't give it out freely, after all, knowledge is power. Everything else is up to you: take a walk in the back alley, buy a merc a drink, or talk to the entertainers here. Just don't waste my time."
"Alright then. With that out of the way, I'm actually looking for someone called 'The Doctor'."
"Doctor Who?"
"Just the Doctor. I haven't heard a different name for him, but he's in the quarantined area here."
"Oh! That loon? I have no idea how, but he arrived about a week ago in some... blue box. He's immune to the plague, and he's helping the people inside to the best of his abilities. He seems nice, he's as likely to help you as he is to kill you. Just don't get him talking; he never shuts up."
"Any idea where he is inside the quarantine zone?"
"Most likely at the med-bay area, surrounded by patients. If you really need him, take a shuttle bay to the quarantine zone. No guarantee they'll let you in though."
"Thanks for the information."
"Yes. Just don't bring the plague with you."
"Well... I do have a couple of questions."
"Is it about how I got here?"
"... Pretty much." Caballeron sighed to himself
"Well... I won't give you much details, but I bought this place with all the bits I had and I'm growing in a more... peaceful way. Though I'll get that bitch Daring Do someday, I might as well enjoy the money rolling in here." Spike got up from the table in a respectful manner.
"Thank you, Caballeron, I'll probably come back here."
"And I'll probably be here." The three made their way out of the club
"At least that's one step to our goal." Diamond Tiara spoke
"Eeyup." Big Mac added.
The three went around the slums, seeing and passing by the locals and the 'landmarks', such as a destroyed statue that may have had explosions on it, a store that's been shot at multiple times, and a group of Lycans huddled together, blocking their path.
"Excuse us." Spike simply spoke. The supposed leader of the pack snarled at them, walking up to Spike.
"Leave, Draco!" It snarled "Tall Norovag we kill no one today!" Spike stopped and stood there, curious on what they were saying.
"I don't know anyone under the name Norovag. Why would I tell him anything?"
"We not trust you! Tell Norovag we know his tricks! We not kill anyone today!"
"Like I said, I don't know anyone. There seems to be a lot of Lycans around here, though. What are you all doing here?" The Lycan snarled at Spike
"Draco talk too much! We no kill today! We leave!" The small pack left in a rush, heading into an alleyway and disappearing.
"I'll take a note on that." Diamond Tiara spoke.
"And I think we're here." Big Mac added, pointing to the right. Spike and Diamond Tiara looked to the right: a lone guard (a mage) stood in front of a door that had blinker reading 'Caution: Quarantined', as a human woman stood there. Spike the others walked to the guard.
"Complaining is useless, human." The Mage spoke with irritation "There's a plague. No one get in or out."
"But my stuff is in there!" the Human woman spoke
"I told you to get lost, lady! The plague has the whole area quarantined! No one gets in!"
"I'm a human, you ass! Humans can't get the plague! Now let me in before the looters take me stuff!"
"This thing affects all other races out there! We're not taking chances; nobody get in until the plague has run it's course!" Spike walked and stood next to the side.
"I didn't think the slums had any law enforcement. Who gave the order?"
"Ah! A typical Draco. That would be Caballeron. If you don't know, he has his hands on every business here, and the plague is bad for business."
"So this zone is completely sealed off?"
"Finally! Something that can hear! That's exactly what I'm saying."
"You can't keep me out!" The woman yelled "I'm going to lose my stuff!"
"I'm doing you a favor, human. Everybody inside will either be dead by the plague or the gangs in a few weeks."
"There's an individual called 'The Doctor' that I need in there." Spike spoke
"That guy!? Crazy bastard that popped out of nowhere!? Yeah, the Wizards weren't too happy when he moved in. I hear he's trying to deal with the plague. I wish him luck, but the area is still locked down. Our orders are to wait until either the plague or the Wizards kill everyone, then go in & clean up."
"And what would happen if my crew and I entered?"
"Without permission? We'd have to kill you."
"Well then," Diamond Tiara spoke "that sounds like fun."
"Nope." Big Mac replied.
"I hope you don't plan on doing it," the guard replied "It would be embarrassing for me to die before getting a sandwich."
What will happen?
We're going to cure the plague!
[Lie] We'll watch over for you
We're going in.
