Chapter 43: Chapter 43 - Back there again

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Cold stone walls of Canterlot castle carried the quiet steps of a lone batpony, as he aimlessly travelled through the hallways. His gaze focused on the stone tablets under his hooves, while his mind wandered away, Nova tried his best to take his thoughts off the reason of his current state, but to no avail. No matter how much effort he put in, he would always end up going back to her. That endless rollercoaster of merciless thoughts would have undoubtedly led him to insanity, had it not been for the sudden explosion of golden light before him.

Celestia stood before him, covered in a puff of smoke, she looked around and noticed him, staring back at her quizzically, "Good night dear Supernova, the sky is quite marvellous tonight isn't it?" she asked nonchalantly her posture rocking back and forth, Nova simply stared back at her, "Quite." he eventually blurted out, his stare once again finding its way to the floor. "Well then, while I wholeheartedly enjoyed our small talk, I must take my leave as I'm needed somewhere else, farewell." She said and turned away, only to be snatched back after a couple of steps by Nova's suddenly booming voice.

"Wait for a second, please!" He suddenly shouted, his voice reverberating throughout the stone hallway. With her ears perked and wings slightly raised she quickly turned her head. Nova moved back a step, "Sorry, but I actually need to ask you something." another step, "Do you know, if maybe Luna has, I don't know - " his front leg moved to scratch his temples, -"Said anything about me?"

Celestia settled down on her haunches and for a few moments blankly stared at her interlocutor, with her eyes closed she quickly pondered on her options, what answer should she give him? Should she beat around the bush, hope for the best? Or tell him the truth.

What truth

Her eyelids shot open with a realization, she doesn't know what Luna has ultimately decided on, "I believe my dear that even if she were to tell me anything, I shouldn't pass such an information any further without her approval."

His ears suddenly flattened on the sides of his head, "I suppose you're right, I'm really sorry to have asked." He said and resumed his walk, slowly moving down the stone hallway as the Princess of the Sun stared at him with regret, her mouth opened, but no sound came out. She looked down and noticed, her lips were sealed, with a zipper no less.

"I think you've done enough sweetie." A booming voice came out from behind her, she quickly turned around only to boop into the face of the lord of chaos hovering in mid-air, behind her. "Now, don't get me wrong, not telling him anything was the best choice you could've made, as far as I'm concerned at least." She tried to speak up but to no avail, a magical zipper proved to be an unmovable obstacle, irritated she pointed with her hoof towards her mouth as the draconequus continued his speech, completely unswayed.

"But this part requires an approach quite different to what you are used to, well then I'll be off." He said and with a snap of his finger disappeared, leaving Princess of the Sun in the middle of the hallway, her cheeks red with rage and her eyes twitching, had her mouth suddenly opened, this story's rating would have to be changed to mature.

Nova eventually found his way into the royal gardens and wondered through the bountiful flora as his thoughts wandered about, his front hoof suddenly froze in space as he spotted a familiar colour peeking out of the bushes. These dark-blue waves with dazzling dots that outshone the stars themselves, he wouldn't have mistaken it for anything, in a second he broke into a mad dash and crossed the boundaries of the green walls, "Luna!" he shouted as he landed on his feet right behind the bush.

"Nova my love! I missed you so much." Discord sang out as he ran his claw through an extremely detailed wig of Luna's hair.

Supernova stood slack-jawed, staring at the draconequus spread down, in what some would call an alluring pose, right before his eyes. He shook his head, "I could really do without that right now." he said as he turned around, ready to quickly leave.

"Going already?" Discord said as he pressed his face right into Nova's, "I thought you wanted to talk to your beautiful girlfriend." His claw suddenly jumping to Supernova's mouth, sealing them, "So, what will you do?"

"I'm really not in the mood right now." He said as he slowly pushed the claw away, Discord backed off and with a snap of his fingers Luna's hair disappeared into the night, he sighed and with his arm crossed on his chest he said, "Well aren't you a party pooper."

"I'm asking you one last time Discord, please, just leave." Nova said, his left eyelid twitching and his nostrils flaring, "Before I'll lose my patience." He said in between his quickening breath.

"And do what?" Lord of chaos mockingly asked as he levitated around the batpony, "You can't even muster up some confidence to check on your loved one but think you can stand up to me?"

"You!" He shouted, his front hoof shoot into the air, and just as quickly as it had risen it fell down, stomping on the ground, "You don't understand, do you know how much this waiting is killing me, this isn't that simple I-"

"It is that simple." Discord cut in, "It's just that simple, you told her the truth, bravo, everypony come and congratulate our little hero." A small rain of colourful confetti dropped down as the lord of chaos clapped his hands, "Now go and tell her again."

Nova took a step back, he fell back on his haunches and raised his hooves up, after a while his stare went back to Discord, he took a deep breath and with a sigh of relief said, "I will." He dashed off into the gardens, and into the castle, leaving the satisfied draconequus behind.

He travelled through these hallways many times in the past but never had he closed that distance as quickly as tonight, in what felt like mere seconds he was already at the door to his lover's bedroom, with one last deep breath he loudly knocked on the door.

To no avail.

No response, he knocked again, and again. After what felt like an eternity of silence, he gently pushed the door open and walked into the now empty bedroom. Without too much thought he ran out and galloped forward, with a single question flooding his mind, Where are you

Void was on his way to his post for today, he walked by the gardens and, still a bit groggy after the early wake-up, allowed himself for a moment of relaxation, he stared at the breathtaking scenery until his ear picked out a rather worrying noise. He tried to identify the danger, but suddenly he felt his entire body tumble around as his vision went awry.

Once the chaos stopped he could feel pain all over his body, he looked to his side, "You sure do have a way of waking others up, let me tell you that." he said to Nova, who quickly raised back to his feet from the crush and shook his head.

With his vision blurred from the crush, it took Supernova sometime before noticing his friend on the floor, "Have you seen Luna?" He asked quickly.

"That's some enthusiasm, what happened?" Void asked as he slowly pulled himself back up.

"I'll explain later, just please tell me if-" The words stopped dead silent in his mouth as his eyes picked out something in the garden, a sudden idea stroke him like a thunder and as soon as Void rose to his feet, Nova has disappeared, leaving nothing but noise of his hoofs, quickly moving farther and farther away.

Void stared dumbfounded at the place his friend stood in just a moment ago, then looked into the garden once more, trying to find the reason for that sudden outburst. It took him a while but finally, he spotted it, a bunch of white snowdrops adoring the spot next to one of the windows, his mouth raised with a smile as he closed his eyes.

"Good luck buddy."

Short on breath, feeling like a total wreck Nova slowly stumbled around the rocky caves near Canterlot. He wanted to run still, but he couldn't, not because he was tired, but with each step he made he was closer to his dream, but also closer to his possible nightmare. With few last steps he made his way for the exit and stepped into the all so familiar meadow, petals of snowdrops flew with a gush of wind as he stared at a lonely figure sitting right in the middle. He moved a step forward and said,

"Luna."
