Chapter 44: Chapter 44 - Under the starry sky

Previous Chapter

Gentle rays of the moonlight illuminated the white petals of snowdrops as they gently swayed back and forth with the rhythm of the wind, in the middle of that secluded place sat a single pony, with her ears perked she turned her head. Nova stood at the entrance, completely stunned, in his ears he could almost hear his heart pumping his blood faster and faster, his stomach was turning inside out as the seconds of waiting were stretched into seemingly endless torture. But he waited, he watched as Luna's breathtaking mane slowly moved away behind her shoulder as she turned to look at him, and once she did, everything stopped. His quickened heart rate, stomach pains, all the nervousness he felt dissipated almost immediately as he saw that one sign he was hoping to see.

A smile.

Luna nodded her head instructing him to come closer, he obliged without a second thought and sat next to her, amongst the many white flowers. "Why does it have to be so hard?" Luna stated, observing the night sky, analysing it as the canvas on top of which she will paint her art, "The relationship stuff, that is." She quickly added, "To think that such an inane thing would give us so many problems."

Nova sat next to her, quietly, he understood that now is not the time for him to speak, now is the time to listen, and accept the judgement of his loved one, whatever it may be.

"When you first told me that this thing that happened to the two of us was a side-effect to a bet, I was confused." She moved her gaze from the sky towards the ground, "I thought that maybe all of this was just a joke to you and that hurt." Nova struggled to keep his mouth shut as he listened, "Who wouldn't want to date the Princess right? Opulence and glory, for a moment I thought that maybe that's what kept you by my side."

Nova clenched his teeth in anger, a frustration that he felt for nopony else but himself at that very moment. A deafening silence filled the space as Nova glued his stare to the ground.

"I'm sorry."

Her words struck him as a lightning bolt, in an instant he moved his gaze towards her, meeting her eyes with his own, and her smiling face radiating with happiness. "Who cares it started because of a game if the thing that said game instigated is more than real." With a gentle shade of crimson heat appearing on her cheeks Luna continued, "I love you, and you love me, and that's what I'll choose to believe."

Nova's jaw hurt as the smile that appeared on his muzzle dared to pass the limits of his physical capabilities, he wiped his watering eyes with his hoof and let out a sigh, "I don't think I know enough words to describe how happy that makes me feel Luna." He moved closer as Luna opened up her wing and gently enveloped his body, nuzzling against each other they basked in the moment, finally being able to relax once more.

"Took them long enough." Discord said as he observed the whole scene through the medium of his binoculars, hovering high above the meadow. "Four days isn't that long." Celestia added with a wide grin spread on her muzzle, "All things considered that could have been worse."

"That was four days? I could swear it felt like two years." Discord said with a straight face as he stared into space, "But never mind that, finally their first serious argument is over."

"That it is," Celestia added with a smile, "Thank you Discord." Baffled by the comment the lord of chaos looked at his wife with one eyebrow lifted, "I heard that you might have had something to do with that little conflict getting to a closure."

Almost as if hit with a punch Discord jerked his head away, "Me? The Lord of chaos helping to solve the conflict? Preposterous, who told you of such nonsense?"

Celestia chuckled, "I'm sorry then, for listening to such lies." She said emphasising the last word, "But thank you anyway."

Discord crossed his arms on his chest and with a snout adorning his muzzle he looked away, "For the record, I had nothing to do with it," he lowered his voice and with a gentle smile whispered, "but you're welcome."

Another gust of wind took the petals of snowdrops into the sky, as the happy couple sat together in the middle, with no worries in the world, "But you will have to promise me one thing Nova."

"Fair enough, what is it?"

"No more bets."

Nova chuckled, "I can't promise that look where that bet led me to," he winked and smiled, "but I'll try to abstain from any bets that include me asking a hot mare out on a date."

"I will accept that, but only if you promise me one more thing, I am really happy that you told me about that whole bet thing by yourself, but if only you didn't wait for so long." She sighed and started to play with the flowers that enveloped her hooves. "Have you told me earlier I don't think this would become such a big thing in the first place, so I want you to promise me, that if you will ever have something to tell me, then you will not hesitate to do so."

Nova's smile disappeared as his gaze returned to the night sky, his stare was fixated on the sky but his thoughts were in some other places completely, Luna continued to play with her flowers, patiently waiting for his response. A confident smile appeared on his muzzle as Nova once more looked back at Luna and nodded. "I can promise that."

She moved her attention back from the flowers and onto her lover and reciprocated his smile, "That being said, I actually do have something to say to you, but to be honest, it's something I just came up with."

With a light chuckle, Luna nodded, "Well what is it then?"

"Will you marry me?"
