Chapter 164: 163. Hearths Warming shenanigans

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

It had been a day since Midnight's visit to the afterlife to meet his future in-laws as his human self. Even standing up to a God as well during his visit. Upon coming back into his own reality he had turned into his human self once again. Some time passed during that day as he had managed to accumulate enough magic to return to his Alicorn self once again. He was feeling a little more nostalgic than normal from the visit. This in turn, prompted him to take the day in full stride to complete several things he has been needing to do for a while. The first thing on his list, to locate and wrap presents for all of his friends and loved ones.

"Alright then, I've already got a few presents fixed and ready to go. The Cakes are making that special cake again for Pinky since I managed to get the ingredients a month ago. Rarity's present was rather hard to get, but I managed to get it anyway. I can't believe that cloth she wanted cost so much." He groaned thinking of the price. "Fluttershy and Big Mac get a trip together to Las Pegasus and a few bits as well. Dash get's a first edition, first issue, limited edition, Sky Blast Wonderbolt, action figure. Applejack get's a new set of enchanted mane and tail holders to prevent her from getting dirty while working. The crusaders get some bits to pick out what they want." He smiled looking over his list. "Now all that's left is Twilight's, Celestia's, Starlight's, Luna's and Marina's present. Then I'm done." He sighed softly as he sat down.

Midnight had been thinking for most of the day on what to get the rest of his friends and loved ones for Hearthswarming this year, and it was only a week away. From all the extra time that he had he was procrastinating something fierce, and it had come up to bite him in the end as the day began to draw closer. After reading a few books within the library however, he had located what he thought would be the perfect present for his lavender loves present for the special holiday. However it would take a day to synthesize and properly enchant. He could go into Canterlot to purchase one, but he could not guarantee that it would work as he wanted it to, plus it was hella expensive, even for royalty.

After doing his research he had located a spell to enchant a battery gem to pull magic into it over time so that it could recharge itself without the aid of a unicorn or other third party to charge an empty container repeatedly once it had run out. The only hard part was getting the battery to charge quickly, and the spell involved could be cast quickly onto the gem to make it charge slowly, or cast the spell onto the gems slowly in order for it to charge quickly. After reading the spell, Midnight was definitely sure that the physics of this world were really fucked up compared to his home worlds. Then again, he has met the Gods of these worlds, so thinking about the physics really didn't bother him that much.

As he had gathered the items for the spell, he had advised the guard within the castle that he was not to be disturbed for any reason within the next 24 hours, as he would be casting a very difficult spell and he would need complete concentration in order to cast it.

Midnight walked around a large magical circle that he had drawn onto the floor via magic to enchant the small gem that lay in the middle of it. The gem was an extremely rare purple diamond that would match twilight's coat perfectly. As he gathered the items he needed and p[laced them into specific points around the circle, he moved to the side as his horn lit up to begin the spell. He gave a heavy sigh as he spoke out. "Twenty four hours to cast this spell. You had better like this present Twi."

The snow covered ground shone brightly today. The sun reflected off of it as the rays penetrated through the slightly cloudy skies above. Most of Ponyville had a thick layer of the white powder covering it, which in turn kept many of the ponies indoors for the day. Well, most of them anyway.

*SPLAT*

"HA! Gotcha Pinkie!" Dash cackled as she hit Pinkie with a large snowball, in turn making the pink party pony shiver and giggle as she started tossing them back at Dash who was easily dodging them left and right.

"He he heeeee, I'll get you back Dashie! Just hoooooold still." *SPLAT* "WHOOPSY!" Pinkie squeaked as her snowball was dodged by the rainbow pegasus and landed right in the middle of Rarity's face causing her to sputter.

"PINKIE!" She shouted, causing the earth pony and pegasus to bolt.

"SORRY!" They shouted as they took off in different directions.

Rarity stood there growling for a moment before it turned into a giggle. "I swear, those two still act like foals at times." She sighed as she brushed the cold snow from her face. "Still though, at least they are out having fun instead of inside annoying me. Celestia knows those two have way to much pent up energy." She smirked. "Speaking of pent up energy, I wonder where Applejack is today, I haven't seen her in a couple of days, not since our darling stallion left for Canterlot."

Rarity began making her trek toward Sweet Apple Acre's to locate the orange earth pony. Even though it was rather cold out and the ground was covered in a thick layer of snow, Rarity had become accustomed to the fact that she would inevitably get dirty at times, and so she would suck up her pride and go with the flow.

After about thirty minutes of walking through the frigid snow, she had arrived at the Apple family farmhouse and knocked on the door. After a moment the door was answered by Applebloom.

"Well howdy Rarity. What' ya'lll doing out in this weather? Ain't it a mite cold for ya?" She asked as she let the ivory unicorn into the warm home. Rarity gave a slight shudder or pleasure as the warm air greeted her upon entering the house.

"It is a bit cold for my tastes my dear, but never the less, I must do what I must in order to get things done." She smiled to the farm filly. "And today, that is to locate your sister. Would she happen to be home?"

"Nah, sis went out earlier to look for a present for Uncle Midnight. She's been gone for a few hours now. Hey, did you get him anything yet?" AB asked her giving a smile.

"Yes I did, and no I will not tell you what I got him." She grinned to the little filly.

"Aw shoot, sis wouldn't tell me either. Ya'll ain't no fun at times." She groaned as she turned to head back upstairs.

"When do you think Applejack will return darling?" Rarity asked before the filly could make it up the stairs.

"Ah, maybe another hour er two ah guess. Granny Smith is takin a nap, an Big Macintosh is at Fluttershy's. Sis done said ah cain't go out by myself in the snow since its purty deep an all. Ah was wantin teh meet up with Sweetiebelle and Scootaloo to go play though." She sighed but stopped, giving a big smile. "Hey, would ya'll mind takin me teh see Sweetiebelle? Ah mean, if'n it ain't to much teh ask." The farm filly smiled widely to the ivory pony before her.

"Not at all darling, but do tell your grandmother first, and dress warmly. It is very cold out." Rarity smiled seeing her beam and rush up the stairs, falling a couple of times in her rush.

After a few minutes, Applebloom had made her way back downstairs with her saddlebag, a scarf, and a beanie that covered most of her head and ear's. "All set." She smiled as the two left the farm house and began their trek through the snow covered path back into Ponyville.

"So, what do ya think Uncle Midnight'd like fer Hearthswarming? I ain't found nothin teh get him yet." The filly asked as they trotted along.

"I'm not sure my dear, maybe you could make him something. I know Sweetie was wanting to have a photo of her and I made for him. Maybe you and your sister could do the same?" Rarity smile to the young filly seeing her thinking it over.

"Well, since ya'll'er doing that, don't'cha think it might be a bit strange teh do the same thing?" She asked giving a raised brow.

"Hmmmmm, you may be correct on that assumption. Maybe you could make him a stocking filled with some of your sisters cooking? I know he just raves about how he loves apple pie and a few other dishes that she makes." Rarity giggled. "I do make a few rather stupendous dishes myself. Although they aren't quite to his tastes." She sighed. "Still though, I shall not give up hope in finding a dish that would make him melt in my hooves."

"Yea, maybe. ah'll ask sis later tehnight when she gets back."

The two continued on, walking in silence until they reached the boutique. Rarity had advised the two to stay in town if they were going to play outside in the snow so that if the weather took a turn for the worse, then they could find a safe place to stay quickly. Rarity had made the decision to stay at the boutique to finish a few orders that had been placed as Hearthswarming presents.

The two crusaders were now making their way through the thick snow toward Scootaloo's home, making plans on what to do for the day while the snow had yet to start falling once again.

"So what do you think? Should we go to the park and build a snowpony, sugar cube corner, or go and see if Spike can come and play with us when we get Scootaloo?" Sweetiebelle asked as she trudge through the snow.

"Ah dunno, Let's get Scoots and go play. Spike dun said he don't like the cold, being a dragon an all. Maybe ah can get mah sis's hat teh let him wear, seeing as it's enchanted." Applebloom beamed.

"Nah, yer sis loves that hat way to much to let us borrow it. I've seen her give my sister the evil eye for even asking to try it on. The only other pony I've seen her let near it is Uncle Midnight." Sweetie giggled.

"Yea........" Applebloom trailed off for a moment seemingly deep in thought. "Let's get Scoots an hurry to Sugar Cube Corner. Ah bet Pinkie has some fresh hot chocolate and gingerbread cookies made."

"Yea, I bet that will warm us up." Sweetiebelle smiled as they managed to trot quickly through the snow toward their friends house.

"I'm sorry girls, but Scootaloo has a cold and can't come out for a while." Scootaloo's mother said causing Sweetiebelle and Applebloom to frown. "I'll let her know that you came by though."

The two fillies gave a sigh as the door closed. Their trio had now been knocked down to a duo for the day, and they had planned for quite a bit of fun for the day as well. As they trudged along though, they had decided to go ahead and make the trip to Sugar Cube corner without Scootaloo, but would leave with a small bag filled with some goodies to help make their sick friend happy.

After the short trek to their destination, they made their way inside and took a seat next to the window. There were a few ponies still within the store whom were enjoying a hot drink and some sweets as they watched the world go by outside.

"Hey girls, did ya stop by for some goodies? Or just to get out of the cold. I don't like the cold without a nice cup of hot chocolate. OH! Can I get you two a cup? OOOOOooooo and some cookies! I just pulled some fresh ones out of the oven." Pinkie said rather quickly while starring at the two fillies sitting in the booth before her.

"Just ah couple hot chocolates and some gingerbread cookies please." Applebloom smiled to the party pony.

"Okie dokie lokie." She smiled as she hopped back into the kitchen to fetch the order.

"So what are ya gonna get Uncle Midnight fer Hearthswarming?" Applebloom asked Sweetie as they watched the world go by outside.

"I'm not really sure, I heard that he asked Twilight to sing in his next concert, and since I got my cutiemark from singing, maybe I could perform a song for him as a surprise." She beamed but it slowly faded as realization came to her. "But his next concert isn't until after new years. So then he would think I didn't get him anything." She sighed.

As if on cue, Pinkie appeared at their table with their order, smiling as she placed it in front of them.

"Trying to decide what to get Midnight for Hearthswarming girls?" Pinkie smiled to them.

"Yea, and we can't think of anything good for me to get him." Sweetiebelle stated while falling forward onto the table.

"Yea, he is pretty difficult to get present's for. Even I have a hard time thinking of something to get him. But he always seems happy to get something I can bake or cook. For such a big stallion, he has quite the appetite." Pinkie giggled. "Why not get him a cake that says best uncle ever? I know he loves carrot cake."

"He like's Mr. Cake?" Applebloom said while scrunching her nose in disbelief.

"No silly, Carrot Cake, the actual cake. He told me its his favorite kind of cake, OOOOOo with cream cheese frosting to!" She beamed.

"You know what, I think I'll get him that, since I can't really think of anything else to get him at the moment." Sweetiebelle sighed.

"I'll have it ready for you on Hearths Warming Eve. I'll even giftwrap it and put your's and Rarity's name on it." Pinkie smiled to her.

"Thanks Pinkie, I owe ya one." She smiled back to the pink party pony before she hopped back into the kitchen.

"Well, now that our gifts for Uncle are taken care of, what'cha wanna do?" Applebloom asked as she looked outside for a moment before stopping and waving Sweetiebelle's attention to what she was looking at.

The two fillies watched as several foals wrestled in the snow and began to throw snowballs at each other. The two fillies grinned to each other before shouting. "SNOWBALL FIGHT!" Then chugged the remainder of their drinks and stuffed their cookies into their saddle bags before running out the door.
