Whats love got to do with it?
Chapter 147: 147. A Dash of Excellence
Previous Chapter Next ChapterAfter finally talking to all but the last of his future brides, Midnight had finally located his final mare, Rainbow Dash. He had been contemplating this moment for a while and mulling over the scenario's in his head to see how things would go. As he came closer to his target he felt a pang of nervousness welling up inside him. His approach to Dash would have to be far different from the others. Although she may be the element of loyalty, That did not require her to be loyal and wed the Alicorn that was about to ask for her hoof. This would be a life long decision that would require her to truly find what she would be loyal to. A pony or person can only be loyal to an extent.
Midnight hovered quietly for another minute before slowly landing on a nearby cloud and floating up to the one Dash was taking a nap on. As he neared her he couldn't help but smile from hearing her light snore as she was sprawled out on her cloud.
"Ahem......" Midnight cleared his throat to hopefully awake the cyan Pegasus from her slumber. He was greeted with her giving a slight jump before another snore escaped her.
"Daaaaaaash." He spoke softly into her ear making it flick lightly. "Time to get uuuuuuuuuuup." He chuckled before blowing into her ear.
"MMMmmmmmmmmm five more minutes." She grumbled as she turned over only to fall off her cloud, giving a loud shriek as she fell toward the earth below. After a few seconds though Midnight was greeted by a slightly annoyed Rainbow Dash who fluttered back up to her cloud, taking a seat and giving him a sour look.
"Not cool." She grumbled toward the Alicorn only to get a smirk in return.
"Hey, at least this time I didn't use a storm cloud and lightning to wake you." He chuckled.
Dash gave a pout while looking up to the Alicorn which for the first time caught him off guard, since Dash was never known for giving a disappointed expression.
"Dash?" He started but stopped as she gave a gentle flap of her wings, propelling the cloud she was laying on closer to him. "You ok?" He stopped as she pressed closer to his face, giving a slightly bigger pout and puppy dog eyes that could melt iron. That was of course until her face began to crack a smile. Then erupt into laughter.
"UGH! Dash I hate when you pull pranks like that. You literally just blow my entire perspective of you out of the water." He groaned while falling over onto his cloud.
"You have to admit it keeps things interesting." She chuckled.
"Yea, and speaking of interesting. I have a question for you." He smirked, causing her to sit upright onto her cloud.
"Yeah? And what would that be?" She grinned.
"Well, I was wondering, I know we've been a bit more than friends for some time now, and this last little encounter when I spent time with you as Flame has brought me to realize something." He began, only to elicit a sigh from Dash. "I was wondering if, maybe, you might want to....... I don't know...... marry me?"
At this point Dash just smiled at him, It wasn't a cocky smile, but a soft smile like she wanted to say something, but didn't want to disappoint him at the same time.
"Night, I honestly don't know what to say. I expected this for a while, considering you already asked Rarity and Twilight."
"And, Applejack, and Celestia." He gave a sheepish smile seeing her cock a brow.
"Seriously? Four mare and me?" She asked seeing him nod. "Whoa........" She trailed off for a moment while rubbing her chin. "Night, as much as I'd like to have you as my stallion, I'm going to have to say no."
Midnight stopped at this moment, not so much as in disbelief, but that fact that one of the few mares that he knows and loves just shot him down from being asked to marry him.
"W-why?" He asked feeling rather stupid.
"Don't feel bad big guy. I'm just more of a one pony show when it comes to having a stallion. I really don't mind it all that much since your with my best friends and all, but having the princess in the bunch as well just pushed it to far for me. Don't get me wrong, I still love you, but I'm not queen material. Plus I have worked so hard to finally achieve my dream to be a Wonderbolt. It took me just over fifteen years to finally achieve that dream. Being a queen means that I would have to give up that dream to go into......bleh.... .politics." She shuddered at the thought. "But hey, your still my go to guy for when I get a little antsy." She chuckled. "And don't think that just because your going to be my king now means that I won't still pull a prank on you." She laughed before giving him a playful nudge.
"Huh............. I can understand your point of view on this whole thing. I wish you would reconsider, but it is your life after all." He smiled. "I hope this won't make things awkward between us though." He chuckled.
"Are you kidding?! Things couldn't possibly get any weirder between us."" She laughed before giving him a punch in the shoulder. "So....... you're really going to be a king huh?"
"Yep. I know it's going to be a whole new ballpark of fun. That and I hope to have a couple more foals in time." He smirked toward Dash who cock a brow at the comment.
"Really now? And who might be the mare's who would agree to such a thing." She laughed.
"Well, Rarity for one, and maybe Applejack when she's ready." He smiled causing her to gawk.
"WOW! That is so awesome. I never thought Rarity would even have a foal with wanting to be all high society material and all that girly stuff. And AJ?! Seriously?! She's like, the hardest working pony I know. If she agreed to have your foal then...... wow......... I honestly don't know how to react to that." She chuckled.
"Maybe if one of them turn out to be a Pegasus, you and Scoots can give them flying lessons when they're ready." He smiled over to her, only to see her beam.
"You bet! But for now, it's the waiting game. Your gonna have to wait until they go into season first. Then there is the wedding, and all that planning. If I were you, I'd let Pinkie do all the planning. She might explode though from knowing that most of her best friends are getting hitched." She chuckled.
"Yea, I appreciate your honesty on letting me know why you chose not to be my bride though. I takes a true friend to be able to say something like that without letting their friend down. Thanks Dash." He smiled before standing up on his cloud. "Oh and one more thing." He gave a devious grin before leaning over and licking her cheek up to her eye.
"EEEEWWW! WHAT THE HAY!?" She squeaked out while rubbing her cheek to get the slobber off. She looked back to Midnight just as he took of from the cloud laughing.
"SEE THE RAINBOW! TASTE THE RAINBOW!" He continued laughing as he fled.
"I'll get you back for that!" She yelled.
XXX
Midnight began his trip back toward Ponyville, mulling over his new status and relationships. Not to mention the thought of telling Pinkie about everything so that she could help Celestia in planning the wedding. But there was still one thing that was bothering him about it all. He had grown to love his open relationship with his ladies, but as the thought of finally settling down with them circled his mind, he realized that the open relationship status would have to come to an end as well. He knew the implications of becoming royalty as well as getting married. He would have to suck up his pride and love only the mares he would be wed to. Until then however, It was a free for all.
There was one thing however that also kept him from going about and having some fun with other mares. It was a surprising to himself as it would be to anypony else. He was happy, content with knowing he had four mares that loved him unconditionally and would do anything for him. It was a hard thing to swallow at that moment, but he realized that if they could love him that way, then he could do the same for them.
He had arrived back in Ponyville within a short time. Dash had been just outside the town from drifting along with the wind so it was a short flight. After making a quick landing outside of the library, he made his way inside.
"Hey Twi, you busy?"
"Kinda, I just located a weird spell I didn't know about." She smiled as she continued reading through the book she had in front of her.
"Really? What is it?' He asked as he trotted to her side.
"Its a spell that takes the parts of ponies that the caster likes about them, and combines them into one, making an entirely new pony out of it. To be honest it kind of sounds like what we just went through with you. only in reverse." She chuckled.
"I don't want to go through that again." Midnight groaned. "But it still sounds interesting, is that all the spell does?"
"Yes, it says that it can take the parts of multiple ponies personalities and turn those into a new pony." She smiled at the thought.
"So you mean it will make a new pony out of just the parts of other individual ponies that the caster likes? Doesn't that seem a little cruel in a way. I mean your making the perfect pony of your dreams by taking the parts you like from other ponies and forgetting the other stuff altogether. Nopony should be perfect. Flaws are what make us unique." Midnight sighed at the thought. Thinking back to a few days ago when he was split into different ponies that the girls thought were perfect for them in a sense.
"Your right, but it says that this spell will only last a few days at most before that pony disappears, returning those that the spell was cast on back to normal."
Midnight sat there slightly confused for a moment before speaking up. "Wait, so what does the spell do then? Does it remove or duplicate those elements the caster finds appealing from the targets, or does it turn the targets themselves into the pony from the elements the caster finds appealing?"
After looking over the spell and description, Twilight rubbed her chin before reading it several more times.
"I'm not sure. This is an old spell and the author didn't provide a very good emphasis on what the spell requires and does. Just what the end result is without the details of how it came to be." She said before cocking a brow at the spell in question.
"Sounds to me like that book needs to be re-written with the correct details on the spells. I would hate to see what would happen if the spell was stuck that way after it being cast, causing several ponies to merge into one forever. They may be the perfect pony for the caster, but the caster just took away several lives in the process of making that pony. If it was just for science, and not permanent, then I could see doing that."
Twilight gave a sly grin looking to Midnight before speaking. "So what is your favorite thing about me then?"
Midnight gawked at her for a moment before answering. "Seriously Twi? You have to ask?"
"Yes, now spill it. I want to know." She giggled.
'Well........ If you have to know, it's your intellect and drive to learn new things. Your ambition to be the best that you can be by learning everything you can about magic. Your intellectual conversations are second to none, even to Tia. Having a conversation with you makes me feel smarter every time we talk because I can always learn so much from you." He smiled nervously toward her but stopped as he noticed how red her face was getting from the compliments.
"I......... never knew you like that part of me." She stuttered slightly looking up to him shyly.
"Twi, you are the smartest pony I have ever met. You may be a little geeky at times, but that is what I love about you. You are always teaching me something new, and I love a mare that has brains." He chuckled before giving her nose a kiss.
"What about Rarity and Applejack? I hate to admit it, but they really aren't all that smart when it comes to what I know." She said smugly. "But that doesn't mean they aren't still great friends."
"Your right to a point doll." Midnight began causing Twilight to cock her head slightly in confusion. "You see, those two are also extremely intelligent in their own way. Rarity is very adept in her knowledge of gems and her passion for fashion. I have yet to meet another pony with her intellect in those areas. She also has the beauty card on her side as well. She always keeps up her appearance and demeanor to make herself look like a high society pony, but still has friends that aren't into that. She is a very classy gal." He chuckled. "AJ on the other hoof is a business smart pony, and a fantastic farmer. Plus her morals when it comes to family are second to none. She can buy and sell with the best of them, take care of her farm and family at the same time, and still make time to be with her friends and have a relationship. It takes a lot of willpower just to do that." He smiled thinking of them.
"What about Celestia?" She smirked.
"She is a pony in an entirely different category. She has many qualities I like. But her motherly nature is very appealing. Along with her kindness and willingness to help when it is needed. Not to mention her wisdom is beyond any other thing I have ever encountered. I feel inferior to her in every way, but she accepts me as an equal."
"You shouldn't feel inferior to anypony Night. Some ponies just have qualities that others do not possess or have little of. One can work to improve those qualities over time, so don't worry about it." Twilight said giving his nose a kiss.
"Thanks Twi, you are something else, ya know that?" He chuckled as he pulled her into a hug, wrapping his wings around her.
"I try." She said smugly, giving a giggle before pressing away. "Now what do you think about this spell? Should I get Rarity and Applejack over here to try this out?"
"I'm guessing you want me to do this spell on you three don't you." He deadpanned.
"Yep." She grinned.
"And your not at all worried that I'll like what comes out of it?"
"Nope."
"Your doing this to torment me aren't you."
"Yup." She giggled.
Midnight let out a groan of annoyance. Twilight always knew how to torment him in many ways, It was another one of her special qualities that he didn't care for, but found fun none the less.
