Chapter 146: 146. Spells and Matrimony

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

A/N: This chapter moves rather quickly I know. But I don't want it dragged out over several chapters just so you guys already know what is going to happen. So here it is. I did write it a lot longer than I would have a normal chapter, so at least you get the feel of it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Celestia sat quietly in her quarters, humming softly to little Starlight as he was being put down for a nap. It was around lunch time already and Celestia had been up for most of the morning since raising the sun and keeping an eye on a very energetic foal. As time wore on though he gradually wore himself out and became cranky as he tried to fight sleep. That however ended quickly with the soft humming of his mother holding him in her arms lovingly. Once she had determined that he had fallen asleep, she placed him ever so gently into his crib before kissing his forehead and quietly left the room, letting one of the head maids tend to him in case he awoke.

Celestia left her room with a contented smile. Never once had she experienced the joy of being a mother, nor the worry that came with it. But now that she had finally bared a foal, all of that changed. Along with the fact that the father of the foal was more than kind to herself and the foal.

She quietly made her way down the hall, heading toward the banquet hall to have a late lunch. She would make many turns here and there before finding herself walking into the banquet hall to see Midnight sitting at the table waiting on her.

"Midnight? How are we feeling today?" She asked giving him a soft smile while walking over to him to give him a gentle nuzzle.

"I've been better, but unfortunately my trip to the castle today is not with good news." He sighed while looking away.

"What's troubling you? Is it about your spells being lost?"

"In a manner of speaking, yes. I had Twilight look into my mind to check on my spells to make sure that they were truly gone. What we found however was troubling to say the least."

Celestia scooted over to him, her attention on every word that he spoke as he continued.

"Turns out that my magical capability to remember spells has been greatly stunted. I can now only remember a thousand spells at most instead of my previous number that was around fifty thousand."

"Well, at least you can still remember a large number of them. Most unicorns live their life only having memorized around a hundred or so spells. To remember a thousand is a great feat indeed. But do not despair. I am sure you will not have need for more than that in the future." She smiled to him softly before leaning onto him.

Midnight gave a disheartened smile back as he nuzzled the top of Celestia's head before speaking again. "Tia, I do have some other news that is on the brighter side." He smiled to her as she pulled away awaiting his response.

"Rarity and Applejack have asked me to be the father of their foals." He smiled widely as a bigger smile broke across her face.

"What wonderful news. To think that you will have two more foals in time is a blessing all in it's own. I am very happy to hear this." She smiled giving a soft giggle. "Plus our little one will have some playmates as well."

"Yea........" He trailed off for a moment looking away.

"Midnight?" Celestia began to ask before he looked back to her with a smile.

"Tia, I know that a lot of things have happened since my time within this world, along with becoming a father and having found several ponies to spend my life with. I've grown quite fond of a couple more ponies as time has passed, and would like to pursue those relationships as well. I feel a little afraid and embarrassed at the same time though in asking them. I know this is out of the blue and all, but I really need some advice on what you would do in a similar situation." He sighed once again as his ears lay back in embarrassment.

"This is new, why would you be afraid to tell somepony that you love them and wish to remain by their side?" She asked.

"For one, I wouldn't want their life to be any harder than it already is, two, I already have three mares, adding two more honestly makes me feel like I'm just using them as a toy for my own pleasure. I don't want them to feel as if I have been playing them this whole time when I actually love them. That plus all the rumors and such would just make things feel awkward and just unpleasant overall."

"That's very noble of you to think of such a thing. But let me ask you this. Do you think they would care as long as they had you there by their side during those times, should they ever appear?"

Midnight sat there thinking for a moment before a smile crept across his face. He looked to Celestia for a moment before slowly moving in and giving her a tender kiss. After a few seconds he pulled away seeing her face radiating a bright red.

"W-what was that for?" She stuttered slightly giving a smile.

"For giving me the answer I needed to do this." He smiled as his horn lit up, pulling a small box from under his wing to in front of him. He gave a smile as he kneeled in front of her while still looking up to her, the small box floating silently there still to be opened.

"Celestia, I know this is far overdue and I should have done this from the beginning, I feel so silly from not having done this from the start, but then I may not have saved this world as many times as I have already. So I think it is high time that I ask you the question I have wanted to ask you from the beginning. Celestia, Goddess of the sun, and the light of my life. Will you marry me?"

Silence followed for a few seconds as he opened the small box revealing a precariously made diamond horn ring. He smiled up to her seeing her eyes begin to water slightly before she bowled him over, hugging him before wrapping her wings around him as she spoke.

"Are you sure you want to head down this road? You will become royalty and have to deal with all of the hardships that I must endure. It will not be a pleasant experience to live the life that I do. But the rewards are well worth it in the end. As long as you are a kind and caring ruler."

"I understood that much before I asked you." He chuckled before rising and pulling the ring from the case, still awaiting an answer.

"Then yes, I will be your bride." She smiled as tears slowly began to stream down her face as the ring was placed onto her horn.

As soon as they pulled back from each other a roar erupted from the doorway as a flood of butlers, maids, and members of the royal guard began to file into the room. The two Alicorns sat there in slight shock as the ponies filled the room all cheering loudly.

"Hail to the King and Queen!" was shouted over and over causing them to smile softly to the crowd.

After a few minutes the crowd had died down and went back to their normal routines within the castle. Midnight and Celestia took a walk through the castle to discuss their future together as well as the other ponies that Midnight would also be marrying in time.

"So tell me Midnight, you spoke of two others that you wished to betroth, I was apparently one of them, but who might be the second?" She smiled causing him to give a nervous chuckle, in turn making his mane turn a slightly lighter shade of red.

"Well Tia, to be honest, while I was split into separate ponies, I found a side of myself that I didn't know truly existed until I started arguing with a certain pony, before racing her." He chuckled. "She honestly set my heart ablaze with ever fiber of her being during those few days. We have had our fun in the past, I will admit. But she is just one of those ponies that are not only a loyal friend, but a great pony altogether."

"Racing, Loyal, fun. Sounds to me like you have quite the crush of Mrs. Rainbow Dash." She chuckled seeing his mane turn a bright pink. "But does she feel the same way? And would she want to live as royalty as well? You do realize that by marrying me that any other mare that you add into the relationship will become royalty as well correct?"

"I understood that from the start yes, Now I am going to have to tell the girls and see what they think. I know Rarity will be all for it, as well as Twilight, Dash and Applejack on the other hoof. I'm not to sure about. "An athlete and a farmer just doesn't seem the type to want to have fame and fortune as well as power to rule a country." He sighed softly thinking about the possible outcomes of what could happen once he told them.

"I do not think you will have to worry. Even if they do not agree to wed you, that does not mean that they will not continue to love you as they do." She smiled giving him a playful nudge.

"True, but telling them is going to be the hard part." He chuckled.

"I think I may have a way for you to tell them without even speaking." Celestia grinned toward Midnight while eying him up and down.

"You have my ear, what do you have planned?" He smirked.

"Come with me, I think you will be pleasantly surprised." She giggled as they headed toward a far room nearby.

"You know Tia, I have to admit that this was a great idea, Plus I never knew that I would look this good in regalia made for a stallion. There is only one slight problem though." Midnight sighed while looking at himself in the mirror. He was covered in a set of regalia that would indicate himself being royalty. The armor was a bright gold matching Celestia's in color perfectly. It was molded to his frame in several areas, but there was one slight problem that he noticed.

"I look evil......." He sighed. "And rather intimidating as well. Is there anyway that I can just wear this while in the castle? I really don't want my friends to shy away just because I look like such a badass."

Celestia trotted silently around him as she took in what he was saying. The regalia was nice looking, but overall it did look intimidating.

"I don't see why you should have to wear it at all times, very well then. You can wear it in the castle only, if you wish." She smiled up to him seeing him return the smile.

"Think I should go ahead and get this over with? Or surprise them?" He chuckled for a moment before seeing Celestia's devious grin.

"I think a surprise is in order. Please do tell me about their reactions though, I am sorry to say that I will not be able to go with you. I have several meetings today that require my attention." She sighed.

"You know Tia, you should take a break every once in a while. Have Luna take over for the day and teach her how to do everything that you do." He smirked before moving toward the door.

"I would not mind taking a break now and again, but Luna........... She has a rather odd way of dealing with situations. She seems so free spirited and child like, even after all these years."

"Well, being locked away for a thousand years will take away from the fun you would have had as a younger pony. I just think she wants to catch up with that lost time and have some fun. After a while I'm sure she'll come around." He chuckled. "But until then, I wouldn't mind filling in for you when you need a break. Seeing as soon I'll be royalty as well."

"You will need to stay in the castle for some training on royal matters in time. But for now, go and show the others your new title. I am sure they will be pleasantly surprised." Celestia smile as Midnight gave a nod and left the castle.

After leaving the castle, he took flight heading toward Ponyville. Midnight would have normally teleported, but this time he needed to think of a proper way to let his ladies know what he had just done without causing them to freak out. He played the scenarios over and over again in his head to see what outcome would be the worst, while the other being the best. From the time he has gotten to know each of them and their little ticks, he already knew the best way to deal with the situation.

As he got closer to the small town, his horn lit up as he cast an invisibility spell onto the regalia that he was wearing. He had decided to not surprise them by just showing up in it, but to let them know in so many words before showing them.

Upon entering the airspace above the small town, he quickly descended, landing just outside of the library before making his way in.

"Twi? You here?" He spoke up as he entered the library.

"I'm in the study." She spoke up causing him to make his way into the room Trixie and Twilight were in previously.

As he entered though, he noticed that Trixie had already left. Twilight was of course at her desk studying and not paying much attention to what was going on around her.

"Hey doll." Midnight spoke up causing her vision to move from the book she was reading onto him.

"Hey............ What's wrong? You look nervous." She said before closing her book to give her undivided attention to the Alicorn before her.

"Well, in a manner of speaking you could say that." He chuckled. "Twi, you know you make me very happy right?"

"Riiiiight." She spoke out knowing something was up.

"And you know that we will eventually get married right?"

"Yeeeeees."

"Well, I wanted you to be the first to know something. Plus I wanted your approval as well. What do you think about me adding a fourth mare to our ever growing family?" He smiled nervously only to get an annoyed glance in return.

"Seriously?............ You want to add another mare." She sighed. "Is it at least somepony I know?" She grumbled.

"Well, yes. But I would also like to add that it also comes with quite a few benefit's." He smiled.

Twilight cocked a brow toward the comment. "What would be those benefit's?" She asked before she noticed Midnight's horn lighting up as his regalia became visible.

"Well, for one, it means your going to be a queen." He smiled nervously as he watched her eyes turn to the size of dinner plates.

"D-did you really.......... ask the princess?" She spoke out in shock only to see him nod.

As she watched Midnight nod, she slowly pulled herself from behind her desk and trotted over to the dark Alicorn, looking him over in his new regalia. Her silence however was beginning to unnerve him, causing him to speak up.

"Twi, you seem oddly calm about all of this."

Twilight just gave a smile before trotting back over to her desk while smiling. "Well, I knew it would happen in time. I mean, she did have your foal after all. Plus I know you have had a weak spot for her since the first day you met her." She giggled seeing him blush slightly. "That and she already told me." She smirked before tossing a scroll toward the confused pony.

Midnight picked the scroll from the air without a word and read it to himself. He gave an annoyed groan before tossing it back. "I guess she couldn't wait to tell her prized pupil about what had happened." He chuckled.

"So I'm guessing from your reaction that you approve?" He asked.

"I do, but that doesn't mean that Rarity or Applejack will approve. I have a feeling Rarity will approve, but AJ............. I don't know." She said while rubbing her chin in thought, giving a worried expression.

"Well, I guess there is no time like the present." He sighed as his horn lit up turning the regalia invisible once more.

"Don't worry, I haven't spoken with them about this......... yet." She grinned.

"Come on, at least let me have a little fun." He laughed, giving her a wink before exiting the library.

As he arrived at the boutique, he made his way inside. As the bell over the door rang he heard an annoyed sigh coming from the far room.

"Coooooomiiiiing." Rarity spoke out as she left the room and stopped, seeing Midnight smiling at her. "Darling? Why did you not just teleport inside?"

"Because you told me not to, remember? That snap when I teleport startles you." He chuckled seeing her roll her eyes.

"Well thank you for being so considerate darling. But do tell, why are you back so later? I thought you were going to talk to Twilight about your spells."

"Well, I did, but then I had to talk to Tia about something as well about the whole spell thing. Then one thing lead to another and it ended up as a surprise in the end. That's yet another reason I came back to the boutique." He smiled causing her to cock a brow at him.

"Your surprises usually result in a prank of some sort. If this time is any different then please let me know before you decide to do something foalish." She smirked.

"Well, to be honest. It isn't a prank." He smiled as his horn lit up, turning the regalia visible once again.

As his regalia came into view, Rarity's eyes slowly began to enlarge as her pupils went to pinpoint. Her jaw making a slow trip to the floor before she spoke out.

"M-midnight............ D-did you really? Did you ask the princess?" She squeaked out before looking up into his eyes and seeing him nod.

*THUD*

"Dammit.............." He sighed as he picked up the unconscious pony into his magical grasp and gently lifted her onto the couch nearby. He gave her a gentle shake a couple of times to try and wake her. "Rarity, wake up, this is no time to play possum." He groaned seeing her still out cold. He looked around for a moment before giving a wicked grin.

"OH MY GOSH! RARITY! YOUR DRESSES ARE ON FIRE!" He yelled only to get a shriek in return as she bolted upright and snapped her head around to find the fire. She stopped however as she heard a loud laugh come from the Alicorn.

"You know how much I hate it when you do that!" She growled.

"It got your lazy flank up didn't it." He continued laughing only to get an annoyed groan from the white unicorn.

"Well since I am awake now, would you care to tell me about why you are really wearing that regalia? And looking quite....... evil." She cringed slightly.

"Yea, that's what I told Tia, heh. Anyway, I did ask her earlier. Hence the outfit." He smiled.

At this point Rarity was conflicted. She was ready to explode from hearing this gossip and wanting to spread it around, while at the same time she knew that it would only cause herself problems along with the princess, and the rest of the mares within their relationship.

"Does this also mean.........." She trailed of giving a cocky smile.

Midnight sighed while face hoofing. "Yes dear, you will be a queen." As soon as he finished he covered his ears with his hooves as an ear splitting squeal erupted from Rarity, which also shattered every window within a hundred yards of her.

After his ears quit ringing he looked around to assess the damage done by the decibel shattering squeal. Broken windows were scattered about the shop as well as part of the way down the street in all directions. He turned back to the ivory pony giving a grumpy expression.

"You do realize that this needs to be kept under wraps for the time being right?"

"Yes, of course darling." She smiled, visibly shaking with anticipation to spread the gossip to the nearest available pony.

"If I have to put a curse on those lips to keep you from telling anyone I will." He smirked.

"I won't tell a soul." She smiled widely as beads of sweat began to form on her forehead.

Midnight gave a smirk as he watched her fidget repeatedly for a good two minutes before giving a sigh.

"I know you can't wait to say something. But at least let me find AJ before you go nuts ok?" He groaned seeing her visibly bouncing like Pinkie Pie around her shop happily.

"Thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou!" She giggled out before kissing him and literally pushing him out the door so that he could hurry and find AJ. As he left he changed his regalia invisible once again before finally being pushed out the door.

Applejack wasn't hard to find, she was set up in the marketplace with a few apples and other items she was selling. As Midnight approached her she gave a smile and nod to him before serving another customer. He made his way around the small line of ponies and to behind the stand, giving AJ a playful nudge.

"Hey there sugar cube. What ya'll doing out'n'about? Thought Rarity had ya tied up, so teh speak." She chuckled giving him a wink.

"Well, I've been tied up all morning getting myself put back together." He smirked only to cause her to chuckle.

"Yea, that was a might big mess'n all. But at least ya'll'er back teh normal."

"Well in so many words perhaps." He sighed.

"Eh? What's wrong?" She asked as she hoofed some change to a customer she had just served.

"When I returned to normal, my ability to make and store my own types of magical spells was damaged. So now I'm limited to a thousand spells in total, to store in my memory. I'll look to see if there is a way to fix this over time, but that isn't really important right now. I came by to ask you a question."

"Well shoot, ah don't like teh be kept waitin." She smirked.

"What would you say if you would be able to become royalty?" He asked, causing her to stop and look at him oddly.

"Me be royalty? HA! Ah'm jes a simple earth pony in a small town, with a big farm. Ah don't right have time teh be a princess er nothin. If ah had a choice, ah'd have teh decline. This here town and a lot of Equestria depends on the Apple Family teh grow and sell apples, and keepem fed. Ah'd be a might happy teh have it happen, but ah'm a workin girl. All that fancy stuff an high society hoo ha jes ain't fer me. Why do ya ask?" She said as she looked back up to him as his horn was glowing.

Midnight stood there quietly as his regalia finally turned visible for AJ and the rest of the ponies nearby to see. All of the ponies in the area bowed before him, except AJ who just gawked.

"I asked Celestia to marry me earlier, As of that moment I was considered royalty." He sighed slightly looking away but tensed up for a moment as he felt AJ wrap her hooves around his neck, giving him a hug.

"Ya know yer a might stubborn and surprising pony. But that don't mean ah don't love ya still. As much as ah'd like teh continue on and marry ya, ah cain't now that ya done gone and asked the princess ya dern fool. Still though, that don't mean that ya cain't come by the farm teh visit. Maybe even have a roll in the hay." She smirked giving him a wink. "Big Mac is gonna be a might angry though. Ya don't just up an leave an Apple."

"But I didn't leave." He smirked. "We are still together, but we won't be getting married. Unless you decide to become a queen in time."

"Well, ah could always hire some ponies teh take over the farm with being a queen an all." She smiled slyly while looking up to the beaming Alicorn. "Ah guess ah could marry yer sorry flank if'n ya ask nicely." She giggled.

"Then by all means, would you do me the honor of becoming my bride as well?" He smiled while bowing before her. AJ's face lit up in a deep crimson red as she looked around seeing many of the towns ponies smiling widely at seeing this happen.

"Ah guess, since yer being suh nice about it'n'all." She smiled while still blushing.

Midnight raised from his bow giving her a soft smile before giving her a quick kiss. " I'm going back to the library for a bit to talk to Twi. Meet me there after yer done in the market."

AJ gave a nod and smile seeing him trot away. Once he was out of sight she pulled her hat from her head and began fanning her face.

"Boy howdy, that stallion knows jes how teh rile me up." She chuckled before talking to the next customer in line.
