Chapter 136: 136. Meeting the human and her friends?
Previous Chapter Next ChapterIt had taken Midnight most of the day to fly to Filly Delphia, straining his magic to near exhaustion to travel quickly through the open sky. Once he had arrived however, he had found a hotel to room for the night. Upon sunrise he awoke to his growling stomach for neglecting to get something to eat the previous day. Over all, his normally high spirits and pleasant demeanor wasn't as good as it should have been.
After making a quick exit from the hotel, he went straight across the street to grab a quick breakfast, giving a nod to the ponies that would bow before him instead of arguing that he wasn't royalty. His mindset was on only one thing at that moment, and that was filling his belly.
"After an hour and a large breakfast with some industrial strength coffee, he paid the tab and left the diner to try and locate the human that he was looking for. After heading toward city hall, he had allocated a map detailing many of the businesses within the city. Another hour of walking around the city to the location in question that had employed the human. He had arrived to the building, entering it and making his way to the receptionists desk.
The building seemed a little old to house such a clean and sterile environment that he had walked into. Black and white marble floors adorned the entrance area while solid white tile floors were in the halls and rooms that was outside of the receptionists area. A large desk sitting in the center of the room along with the older mare that was the receptionist sitting behind the desk.
"Can I help you........." She trailed off looking up to the Alicorn, her eyes going wide. "My apologies your majesty, I was not aware that we would be given a visit from royalty today." She spoke as she bowed her head.
'Hmmmm, If I can play this royalty thing off, it might give me a better chance at finding that human. Maybe....... just this once.' He silently chuckled to himself as he smiled to the older mare behind the desk.
"You need not worry my dear." He began, giving a soft smile like Celestia would to her subjects. "I am here to see the human that your company has employed, that is, if you wouldn't mind paging her."
"It's no trouble at all sire, please, give me a moment and I'll see if she is available." She smiled up to the dark Alicorn before pressing a button on her desk. "Samantha, you have a visitor up front." She spoke into the small intercom box. After a few seconds another voice came from the other end.
"If it isn't important then I don't have time right now. Who is it and what do they want?" She snapped back.
"I'm afraid it is rather important if royalty has asked to see you." She spoke back. Silence filled the air for a few seconds before the voice came back over the intercom.
"I'll be there shortly." was all that was said.
After about five minutes, some squeaking was heard as a pair of sneakers met the marble floor coming from one of the halls down a far corridor. Midnight trained his vision to the hall just as the Samantha walked into the lobby. She stopped just as her vision fell onto the dark Alicorn, her hand coming up to her face as it adjusted a pair of glasses that rested on her nose.
"I'm..... sorry, I was expecting Princess Celestia or Luna. Who might you be?" She asked while looking him over as she walked closer giving a slight bow.
"Name's Midnight Flame." He smiled but stopped as he heard her chuckle.
"Cute, I'm guessing your that human turned Alicorn I've heard so much about." She smirked while crossing her arms. "And imitating royalty? That's a big no no." She laughed. "Does Celestia know your out gallivanting as royalty?"
Midnight was dumbstruck for a moment before giving a sheepish smile. "Sorry, I figured someone that would be in the science field would be to busy just to see somepony who isn't that important."
"True, but still, you shouldn't think so little of me. I may enjoy my work, but that doesn't mean I know how to be hospitable." She smirked again. "Come on, I have a lot of work to do and your holding me up. Might as well allow you to watch while I work." She spoke as she began to walk toward the corridor she had just came from. Midnight hot on her heels as they walked.
As the made a quick trek down the hall, Midnight couldn't help but stare at her in fascination. It had been just over a year since his arrival in this world and he had almost forgotten what the human female frame looked like. As his eyes trained up and down her frame from behind he gave a smile. She was roughly around five feet six inches tall with a thin frame that seemed a little fragile. Her hair was a dark brunette, wrapped up, and placed in a bun on the back of her head. With what looked like a chopstick placed through it to hold it in place. She wore a white lab coat that was open in the front revealing a dark blue shirt and a pair of grey jeans. But what threw off the entire outfit was a pair of bright neon orange tennis shoes. Midnight couldn't help but chuckle seeing them.
"What's so funny?" She spoke up while looking over her shoulder and noticing him looking at her shoes.
"Neon orange shoes huh? I'm guessing that it was your day off work when you got sucked into this world."
Samantha laughed. "Yea, I was actually on my way from my front door to the car to go and pick up a pizza I had just ordered and to return a few movies to redbox. As I was walking the entire twenty feet to the car a gust of wind came out of nowhere. I closed my eyes from the dust that was blown into them. After a minute off rubbing them, I opened them to see nothing but trees and a weird blue glowing well. Luckily there was a path leading through the forest. When I managed to find my way out of the forest I heard talking nearby next to a small shack of a house. When I ran around the corner of the house I stopped and saw a bunch of multi-colored ponies staring at me like I was some monster. Before I could say or do anything I felt myself being lifted off the ground. After a moment of shock, the pony that had lifted me spoke up telling the others they were safe. Of course, hearing and seeing a pony talk for the first time in my entire life made me black out. I woke up in a hospital strapped to a bed still wearing my clothes. The princess had arrived and talked to me, after some hesitation, my geek side began to take over, fascination of their species and hearing that magic was real sold me. I talked with the princess and she offered to turn me into a pony but could not guarantee what type I would become. She had told me about another human that had been transformed into an Alicorn by accident and that he had to stay that way or possibly end up destroying all of existence."
"Yea, that part kind of sucked at the time, but thankfully it turned out for the best seeing as I've saved this world several times over already since then." Midnight chuckled.
"True, and I must thank you for that. I remember the shadow thing that took over a while back. For some reason I was immune to his influence and he couldn't harm me in any way. It was rather strange at the time but after a short time it vanished without a trace. I was told that the new Alicorn had managed to save the planet. So for that, I am in your debt."
"Think nothing of it. Just part of my duty in protecting this world." He smiled. "So why did you decide to remain a human? Isn't the thought of being able to use magic enticing enough to change your mind? Or flying?"
"Well, after thinking about it for a while I was starting to consider being changed into a pony, or hell, even a griffin or dragon. These ponies have spells and magic for just about anything." She laughed. "But I decided to keep my humanity. If I had been turned into an earth pony I would have probably went insane. At least with being a unicorn or pegasus I could handle items with magic or my wings."
"I can understand that. Learning magic though was pretty easy for me." Midnight chuckled thinking back to when he first learned how to use a levitation spell.
"Using magic would seem tough though because of all the alchemical ingredients you would need to have in order to cast some of them though right?"
"Not with me. For some reason I don't need to use the ingredients to cast any specific spell." He chuckled but stopped as he bumped into the human who had stopped right in front of him. She stumbled forward for a second before whipping around with a shocked expression.
"What?! As far as I'm aware, every unicorn, and even the princess needs ingredients to cast certain spells. How is it that you don't need them?" She choked out in awe.
"Dunno, I just think of a spell and cast it."
"Wait, you said you just think of a spell and cast it. You mean you don't read any spell books to learn the spells before casting them?"
"Nope."
"Bullshit!" She shouted giving a smirk. "Fine then." She chuckled as she pulled out a small slip of paper and unfolded it before pressing it toward Midnight. "Do this spell then."
Midnight looked at the paper giving a deadpanned look. "You have got to be kidding me. This has got to be the oldest known fable in human history. Seriously? Turning lead to gold?"
"I have a pencil right here." She smiled pulling one from her lab coat pocket on her chest. "I'm sure you can split it and pull the lead out." She smirked before tossing the pencil to the Alicorn who caught it in his magic giving a sigh.
"Fine." He groaned as the pencil split in two revealing the lead at its center. "But I'll only do a temporary change. A spell like this should not be made known to the public. Even I work for my bits." He sighed before the lead began to glow and slowly change into a golden hue. "Satisfied?" He asked as she plucked the pencil from the magical grasp looking at it.
"Astonishing!" She choked out as she could feel the weight of the gold within the pencil. "But you said it was temporary. Why not make this piece permanent?" She asked while cocking a brow.
"I can see through your little guise sweetheart, and I'm perfectly aware of what science and magic can do in conjunction within this world. Your group of friends that work with you have several type of scan spells. One of which can tell them how a spell was cast and applied to something. Having a permanent spell to turn lead to gold would cause some serious problems in this world and possibly destroy the economy and trade system. I'm not about to divulge a classified spell like that." He smirked seeing her smirk back while pressing her glasses further up onto her face.
"So I take it you're educated as well?" She asked before crossing her arms.
"Six years of college, five years piloting, and four years special ops not including grunt work in military. You won't find a deadlier combination of skill and knowledge." He grinned.
"That with being an Alicorn seems to make you unstoppable. Why not take over the world instead of just wasting your life away toiling about?"
"Doll, I am far from evil and believe in protecting those weaker than myself. I was raised in a caring environment and taught with high moral standards. Even if the beings of this world would willingly give the world to me on a silver platter, I would refuse and remain here to protect them." He spoke giving a sigh. "Evil is simply a perspective, and not within my being."
Samantha stood there for a moment as she thought about what he had just said before turning and walking back down the hall, Midnight still right behind her. "You seem pretty chivalrous and kind. Why couldn't I have found a nice guy like you back on earth?" She chuckled thinking back to all of her bad relationships.
"That reminds me." He began, catching her attention. "What part of earth did you come from?"
Samantha gave a sigh before speaking. "New York City. Not the best place in the world." She groaned.
"Yeah........... I lived in a small town in southeastern Kentucky. Small community, nothing like New York."
"Really? I wouldn't figure you to be more country with the way your talking now." She smirked.
"Same with you city slicker."
They both gave a soft laugh as they came up to a room with a keypad to its side. After entering the number needed, a small buzzing sound emitted from the door as the locks disengaged letting it open. The two making a quick entry as it closed behind them.
"Everyone, we have a visitor." Samantha spoke up grabbing the attention of the five unicorns within the room causing them to set aside what they were doing to meet the new arrival. "I'm sure you have heard of this fellow from rumor." She piped up causing their attention to fall onto the Alicorn and him to step forward.
"Midnight Flame." He nodded to the group as they began introductions.
The first unicorn stepped forward as he lifted a pair of goggles from his eyes, A pair of stone black and brown eyes looking to the pony before him, His dark grey coat and red mane making him stand out the most of all the ponies in the room.
"Names, Stone Forge. Everypony just calls me Forge though." He nodded before stepping back as a young mare stepped forward, Her eyes a piercing Ice blue, while her coat was a fire red equal to Big Macintosh's. Her mane a beautiful yellow.
"Kindle Ro. My friends call my Kinna." She smiled giving a nod to the Alicorn before another young mare stepped forward. Her expression seemed to be neutral as she looked the Alicorn up and down. Her eyes were a brilliant red while her coat was an ice blue, her mane a stunning white.
"Glacia Heart, Everypony calls me Ice if they know whats good for them." She gave a snort at the end causing Midnight to cock a brow.
She stepped back as another unicorn stepped forward that seemed to be an exact opposite of Ice. His mane was a brilliant light blue while his coat was solid white. His eyes a deep purple.
"Orion Light, Just call me Orion." He nodded before stepping back as the final pony stepped forward.
The last unicorn to step forward was the largest stallion Midnight had seen next to Big Macintosh. He however was smiling, although it seemed a bit unsettling. His eyes were squinted shut due to the smile, his Coat was a shiny silver while his mane was a shiny black and overall very well kept.
"Steel Will. Call me Steel please." He smiled a little more before cracking an eye open revealing nothing but white and causing Midnight to visibly stare. "Yes." Steel spoke, breaking Midnights train of thought.
"Pardon?" Midnight asked.
"You were thinking, 'Is he blind?' Am I correct?" He continued to smile.
"Yes, my apologies, I did not want to offend." Midnight spoke out in surprise.
"No offense taken, I've been blind since birth. You tend to get used to it after a while. Besides, I have everypony here to help me when I need it. They may seem to be a rag tag bunch of geeks. But they are the closest thing I have to a family." He spoke up giving the stallion next to him a playful nudge, eliciting a giggle from Kindle.
"Alright, now that introductions have been taken care of, I'm sure you want to know more about why I'm working with a bunch of crazy ponies in the field of magic, especially since I can't do any magic on my own, right?" Samantha smirked.
"If it won't take up to much of your time." Midnight smiled back as they began to walk into another room nearby, leaving the five ponies to get back to their work.
"So that's the human turned Alicorn huh? I didn't detect any type of spells that he was using to protect himself. Maybe we should....." Ice was cut short by a hoof pressing to her lips as Steel continued to smiled before speaking.
"No...... no......... let us continue with our plans, he may prove to be a valuable asset if we play our cards right. He will be part of our group in time, or dead, whichever comes first." Steel's grin became more wicked as both of his eyes opened revealing nothing but solid white. "Let's just try to get as much information out of him as possible before we kill him though." He said before pulling his hoof back and trotting back to his workstation.
