Whats love got to do with it?
Chapter 137: 137. Getting to know the geeks
Previous Chapter Next ChapterAs the human and former human talked about different subjects, as well as getting to know one another better. Steel was at his work station standing there in silence before his horn lit up and he walked from the room. Midnight taking notice and looking from the door back to Samantha.
"Sam? Does Steel need any help with moving around in this facility? I've never known a blind pony before and literally have no knowledge on that subject." He asked giving a slightly worried glance back to the door.
"He's fine, He uses his magic to see with. You would be surprised by what that pony can do with his magic." She smiled. "Remember that old comic book character, I think his name was Daredevil?" She said before seeing Midnight nod. "He can actually see with the use of his magic. It's astounding really. He even let me try the spell out by casting it on me. I would close my eyes but I would still see everything around me as vibrating light. He said the spell would increase my overall sensitivity in hearing so that I could echo locate just from any sound made."
"That sound like one amazing spell, an complicated. I can do quite a few complicated spells, but to be honest, even thinking of trying to make a spell to do echo location with your hearing and turning the sounds to a visual perspective while you are blind gives me a headache. I have to hand it to Steel, coming up with a spell like that really impresses me. Especially since I can't do it." He chuckled.
"Really now? The big powerful Alicorn can't do a simple spell?" Ice spoke up in a teasing tone.
"Sounds a bit complicated to me, If I could dissect the spell or copy it from the casters memory then I could pull it apart in my mind to see how it works. I usually learn far easier when I can take things apart so I know how it ticks." He smirked to Ice who only rolled her eyes.
"I thought you said you could think of a spell and make it work?" She smirked back teasingly.
"Well, I could do several spells in sequence and get the same effect, but it wouldn't be the same as doing a single spell that has all of those effects combined. So, in a way I can and can't at the same time." He sighed.
"What about other spells?" Sam asked. "You know, ones that would normally require alchemical agents in order to cast."
"Some are harder than others to cast while others are easy. When I cast a complicated spell then it is usually multiple spells combined into a single spell but all cast at the same time, so it looks like I'm casting a single spell sometimes, but in reality it could be two or up to twenty. After that I have an extremely difficult time concentrating one anything more, so my spell limit is fixed. If a spell is super complicated which would normally cause me to have to think of multiple spells to cast it, I more than likely won't be able to learn or cast it, even with my own variation of the spell. However I do have a scan spell that allows me to read and log any type of written format into my brain. That usually helps out more than naught when I scan a spell book to learn pony versions of a spell that I normally couldn't cast as my own version."
"Wow, back up a second." Ice interjected. "So you can cast multiple spells in a single casting, and up to twenty as well? What the hell?!"
Midnight looked at Ice in surprise seeing her expression on anger, he wasn't sure what to say at that moment because nopony had ever gotten angry about his ability to do such a thing, most just looked on in fascination.
"Sorry?" He smiled nervously. "As you already know, I am a former human. Having my biology changed into what I am now obviously gave me a special talent to do spells that way. It genetics if I were to take a guess. I meant no offense in what I said."
"It's fine, don't mind Ice, she has always been rather........ temperamental." Steel spoke up as he entered the lab once again, only to cause Ice to snort at him before turning and heading back to her station.
"It's no problem. I'm sorry if I offended her though. It wasn't intentional." Midnight apologized.
"As I said, it's fine. But did I hear you correctly from your earlier statement about casting multiple spells at once?" Steel asked as his curiosity peeked.
"Yes, it's not something I brag about because in reality it is very hard to do, as of late it has become far more difficult to concentrate and pull off multi-castings as well. What would normally have taken me only a few hours to get to this city from my own took almost all day." Midnight sighed while rubbing the side of his head with a hoof.
"More difficult you say? That does not sound good at all. But it could be due to your current current abilities and list of available spells as well. If you don't mind me asking, exactly how many spells do you know?" Steel asked giving a small smile.
"Give me a sec to get the number." Midnight said as he closed his eyes for a moment before reopening them. "At this moment, 63,478."
*CRASH*
Everyponies attention snapped to Ice who was no visibly shaking with anger, Her face burning red as well as a magical aura surrounding her horn. On the floor in front of her lay a small broken glass vial with some liquid slowly oozing around the shards.
"You know HOW MANY SPELLS!?" Ice shouted in utter rage while staring down the Alicorn who now just cocked a brow at her.
"ICE!" Steel shouted causing her to flinch, recoiling slightly as she heard the echo in his voice. She knew from previous experience that if Steel shouted, then she had better do as she was told. She pulled back giving a huff, leaving the shattered vial and liquid on the floor.
Midnight gave a sigh as he trotted over using his magic to lift the liquid and glass from the floor while also scrubbing the spot with another spell. He placed the items into a bin nearby before coming back to Steel and Samantha.
"Please accept my apologies for Ice. She tends to get upset easily by those who have more knowledge than she does when it comes to spell casting." Steel said giving a sigh.
"It's alright, had I known I would have refrained from speaking about that particular matter within her presence. I do however feel as if I have overstayed my welcome. Please let her know I do apologize and meant no disrespect, and should she need anything, as well as the rest of your little family here, just let me know and I will see what I can do." Midnight smiled before his horn began to light up.
"Wait please." Steel said, causing the Alicorn's magic to halt. "We do have a sensitive environment here for spells and the like. If you are going to teleport. Please do so from the lobby or outside."
"Sorry about that, I should have asked prior. Thank you all for your hospitality. I shall return in time to speak again, and just to try and get on Ice's better side, please give her this from me." Midnight chuckled as he pulled a small book he had been hiding under his left wing. Levitating it to Samantha. "If she is into learning new spells then she will love this book." He smiled before taking his leave from the room.
"Hmmm, this book looks rather new." Sam said before opening it to see human hand writing. "Wait, is this ancient spell text?" She gawked.
Steel quickly snatched the book away as his magical vision searched the books pages, reading over some of the spells, his eyes going wide with disbelief. "This is an extremely rare copy of a very old book from the royal archives. I have been requesting permission for the past ten years to try and just read this spell book, and that Alicorn just up and gives Ice a copy from just feeling bad about upsetting her?" He spoke in such shock that he literally dropped the book from his magical field. Samantha coming over and picking it up before running her hand over Steels mane, giving a little scratch and causing his leg to hike up involuntarily.
"I told you to quit that." He chuckled, pulling away as his face flushed red.
"Awwwww, but I think its just so adorable. Especially when I scratch your chin." She spoke playfully as she reached toward his chin only to make him pull away as he tried to put on a serious face, but it quickly turning into a smirk.
"D'aaaaaawww." Kindle and Forge spoke in unison giving a chuckle. Steel giving a sigh while face hoofing.
"Back to work you two. You can pick on me during your lunch break." Steel spoke up causing them to chuckle as they turned back to their stations.
"Come on now, they think it's cute that the big serious unicorn has a soft spot for a lady that can scratch all the right spots." She grinned as she wiggled her fingers in a squeezing motion toward him causing him to back peddle.
Steel backed away giving a soft chuckle while trying to speak. "N-no, you stay back. The last time you almost made me pee myself, You are NOT going to tickle me again." He said as he backed up to the door that Midnight had just left from.
"Awwww, now who said I was going to tickle the big strong stallion? I'm sure you could just put a shield up and keep me from doing this if you wanted." She giggled as she chased him from the room.
"I swear, those two acting all lovey dovey like that makes me sick sometimes." Ice groaned as she stepped back into the room.
"I think yer just jealous of those hands and her flirting with your buddy." Kindle giggled but stopped as she was hoisted into the air, upside down, and brought within an inch of Ice's face as she sneered back angrily.
"Mind your own business. I'm in no mood for this crap." She snorted before dropping her onto the floor with a thump and leaving the room.
Kindle picked herself up giving her head a gentle rub as she stared at teh door Ice had just left through.
"Damn?! What's got that mare's tail in a knot? She's never this physical when I've joked with her before."
"Your pretty new to the team so you'll get to know her ticks over time. Just remember to stay out of her way and you'll live longer than the last team member." Forge spoke up giving a sigh.
"Why? What happened to the previous member?" She asked while cocking her head to the side confused.
"The previous member was mysteriously turned into a block of ice while in the break room, as well as several vending machines and some freshly brewed coffee. When they got him out of the block and ran a scan spell on him to check his vitals. Every water molecule in his body had been turned to ice. He was dead before he knew what hit him."
Kindle stood there in shock for a moment looking at the door. "Guess that means no more picking on the Ice pony. No wonder she prefers that nickname to her real name. That's just brutal."
