Chapter 1: The Cape Makes The Mare

Sweetie Belle wailed in torment, a tortured scream escaping her lips as she cast herself to the ground. So great was her despair that poor Sweetie Belle was certain that even the icy touch of death itself would be less painful, for her agony was too great to bear.

“Sweetie Belle, you heard me. It’s time for bed.”

“No~o!” Sweetie howled in protest, scrabbling at the stairs as her sister dragged her up the stairs. “I’m not even tired yet!”

“Of course you’re not, Sweetie,” Rarity said without a hint of sarcasm. “Now, hurry along.” She nudged her sister toward her bedroom firmly, trotting after her.

“You cannot defeat me!” Sweetie Belle squeaked in protest, standing defiantly before her opponent. “I could stay up all night!”

“Just because somepony can do something doesn’t necessarily mean that she should,” Rarity insisted sagely.

A battle of wits between mortal foes! So, Rarity wanted to challenger her, did she?

The dreadful Alicorn Amulet must have left some form of imprint upon Sweetie Belle, for the moment she snagged her little black cape, she felt the surge of evil… evilness coursing through her veins with an icy fire. Sweetie donned her cape swiftly, cackling madly as she stood atop the bed.

“Ah ha!” Sweetie Belle crowed. “The Great and Terrible Sweetie Belle shall not be beaten by the likes of you!”

Without missing a beat, Rarity deadpanned, magically lifting the cape from her sister and folding it neatly.

“Of course not,” she said flatly. “I never stood a chance. Have you already brushed your teeth?”

“Wha-? Hey, that’s not fair!” Sweetie scowled, snatching her cape back and throwing the black cloth over her shoulders once again and tying it a little more tightly. “The Scare-ifying Sweetie Belle needs no such teeth-brushing!”

Sweetie Belle the Fresh and Minty spat into the bathroom sink, and rinsed her mouth.

Okay, so the future overlord of all of Equestria could brush her teeth every once in a while. But it was a hassle, and that simply wouldn’t do.

“All done?” Rarity leaned around the corner to ensure that her mortal foe was submitting to her whims.

“All done!” Sweetie beamed with a hint of pride. Her very evil gums were shinier and cleaner than ever before! Rarity’s foolish insistence upon her sister’s oral hygiene would be her very downfall, for sure.

“All right, take yourself to bed,” she nodded, the despair that only the vanquished could know rising within the depths of Sweetie Belle.

“Aww, already?” Sweetie frowned. “Are you sure I don’t need to brush again?”

“You’re not staying up any longer, young lady,” Rarity said with a half-smile. “But you get an ‘A’ for effort.”

Egad! Not only was her opponent ruining her plans, she was mocking her! Kicking her while she was down, destroying her fragile psyche!

Sweetie Belle almost gasped aloud at the sheer dastardly aura that should have emanated from Rarity. She was most diabolical.

In all likelihood, planning to replace the Dark and Terrifying Sweetie Belle as Supreme Evil Overlord of All of Equestria!

“No!” Sweetie howled, flying past her probably-eventual successor and shrieking at the top of her lungs as her tiny legs kicked madly and carried her down the stairs. “It cannot be! Betrayed by my own kin!”

“Sweetie Belle, you get back here right this instant!” Rarity huffed wearily as she started down the stairs after her.

“Betrayaaaaaaaaaal! BETRAYED me!”

Rarity sighed heavily, traipsing after the rogue filly. It was going to be one of those nights, it would seem. She rolled her neck, a newfound determination growing as she picked up her pace.

Thinking quickly, Sweetie Belle the Swift and Agile darted into the kitchen. She needed to find a place to recover and recuperate her dark and terrible powers.

Also, to hide from Rarity.

“Sweetie Belle?” Rarity called lowly as she crept into the dark kitchen, not a single sound arising. “I know you’re in he~ere,” she said in a singsong voice, sneaking along the tiled floor. She peered around the edge of the table, thinking aloud.

“Hmm,” Rarity hummed. “Now, wherever could that little rapscallion have run off to…?”

Sweetie Belle was in the middle of celebrating her small victory when her success was so cruelly and coldly torn from her grasp.

Rarity lifted the tablecloth and darted her head underneath quickly.

“Ah-ha!” Rarity could no longer hold back the grin.

Sweetie the Very Not Surprised yelped in something that easily could have been misconstrued as something akin to surprise or shock, which she most certainly was not feeling at all because the future overlord of Equestria wasn’t afraid of anything, and hit her head on the table. Sweetie the Very Sore and Not Surprised Even a Little Bit scrambled from her antagonist’s clutches, darting out from beneath the Table of Solitude.

Sweetie Belle continued screaming in a high pitched tone all throughout Carousel Boutique, her flowing inky black cape flowing majestically enough behind her that she stopped momentarily to admire just how truly evil it made her look. It was a very pleasant color, too, with a nice sheen to the velvet.

Unfortunately, Rarity took advantage of the moment she stopped (and ceased her yelling) to capture her dreaded enemy once more, picking up the unsuspecting filly with one hoof.

Curses!” Sweetie Belle scowled viciously, flailing and squirming in the surprisingly strong grasp of her sister. “This is unacceptable!”

“Sweetie Belle,” Rarity warned dangerously as she lugged the filly up the stairs. “If you don’t go to bed at a decent hour tonight, I’m not going to make you any blueberry hay waffles in the morning.”

Such a horrible and outrageous threat caused Sweetie to fall slack in her sister’s grip, which almost could be attributed from sheer shock.

“Not-not any blueberry hay waffles in the morning?” Sweetie asked with a hint of panic.

“Mmm, with the chocolate chip sprinkles on top and fresh, delicious maple syrup,” Rarity nodded. “Not a single one. Well, for you. I’ll probably make lots for myself.”

Sweetie’s jaw dropped in horror, and she quickly removed her cape after Rarity set her on the floor.

“I give up,” she complied quickly. “I surrender, you win!”

“Mwa-hahaha!” Rarity probably tried to guffaw evilly with all sorts of nasty and mean glares and background lightning flashes, but instead somehow managed to confuse it into coming out “I thought you’d see it my way. Do you want me to tuck you in now?”

Sweetie Belle shook her head furiously, which also somehow managed to get confused into coming out as a hearty nod. How very strange and peculiar.

Rarity used her own hooves to tuck her sister into bed instead of magic, which Sweetie quietly appreciated. It was just like her mother did, and she looked forward to when her parents would come home from vacation.

“There we go,” Rarity smiled softly as the lights were dimmed, giving the filly a quiet peck on the forehead.

“Thanks,” Sweetie Belle snuggled comfortably in her bed beneath the sheets. “I love you, Rarity. Goodnight.”

“I love you too, Sweetie Belle,” her sister gave her a tight little hug. “And goodnight. For real, this time,” she said a little sternly, but all too quickly relaxed.

For somepony who wasn’t tired in the slightest, it certainly didn’t take the quite-likely future evil overlord of Equestria long to begin letting out quiet little snores.

And thus, the day was saved, thanks to the magic of delicious waffles.
