The Rainbow in the Rough
Chapter 6: The Truth About The Diamond and The Rainbow
Previous Chapter Next ChapterThe sun was just rising over the horizon and Rainbow Dash had been awake long before that. She saw that Rarity had fallen asleep in the chair next to her bed and held one of her hooves as she slept. Rainbow could see the stains on her face where tears had flown down her muzzle. So she chose to let Rarity sleep and not let her worry any more than she had so far.
Even with all the pain meds they had her on, she could feel how much she hurt. No matter how much it hurt her to turn her head, she looked at Rarity sleeping in the chair next to her. Thoughts of when she began to develop feelings for her filled her mind. It was at the Best Young Flyer Competition, and Rarity flew near the sun and she just look so beautiful, the most beautiful thing she had seen in her whole life. Her thoughts continued to drift back to that day.
The light from the rising sun hit Rarity’s face, causing her to try rolling over and away from the offending light that wanted nothing more than wake her from the sleep was enjoying. After a few minutes, she just gave up and slowly opened her eyes to see that Rainbow Dash was looking at her with a dreamy look on her face.
“Well morning, you sleepy head. How did you sleep?” Rainbow smiled at her.
“I could ask you the same, dear…” Rarity let out a yawn. “But I can tell that the meds are making you happy.” She giggled as Rainbow blinked at her.
“What makes you say that for?”
“Oh just that dreamy look you have on your face.”
“Oh… I can tell you it’s not the meds giving me this look on my face,” Rainbow’s voice got really low when she said this. At the same time, there was a red tinge forming below her eyes. This caused Rarity to giggle, seeing Rainbow blushing like that, however, she was also doing the same thing.
Rarity got out of the chair and made her way to the door, but not before she walked up to Rainbow and gave her a light kiss on the cheek. She made sure that it wasn’t an area that would cause Rainbow any pain. Seeing Rainbow’s blush growing brighter only prompted her to giggle more while she went back to door.
“Where are you going; Rare?” Rainbow asked, still trying to recover from the kiss on her cheek.
“Just home so I can get cleaned up for you, dear. I want to look my best for you all the time,” Rarity answered in a matter fact tone.
“You don’t have to do that for me, Rarity. You look very beautiful right now,” the pegasus added in a low voice. Rarity had a bit of trouble hearing it, but upon realizing the words her face turned bright red under her white coat.
Rarity didn’t know what to say to Rainbow. She decided to turn around and head back into the room, next to her love. Dash looked up at her and before she could say a single word, Rarity kissed her deeply. The only thing Rainbow could do was kiss back, her eyes slowly closed as she could feel Rarity’s feelings for her.
After what felt like a lifetime for the two, they broke apart, panting for air, but both wore a wide smile. Rarity began making her way back to the door to leave as Dash’s voice stopped her in her tracks. “Why are you still leaving?”
“I have a few things to take care of. I promised Twilight we would have a cup of tea together. And I was thinking about seeing if she could borrow you another copy of those books you’ve been reading.”
“YOU MEAN YOU ARE GOING TO GET ME THE NEXT COPY OF ‘DARING DO’?” Rainbow squealed. Rarity just nodded and made her way out of the room, to leave an overjoyed Rainbow Dash lying in bed.
Rarity walked into the café where Twilight was sitting at a table, waiting. Already prepared on the table were two cups, Twilight knew what Rarity liked to drink. Why wouldn’t she, they had a tea date every Wednesday. But with things going the way they were, they moved it ahead a bit so they could talk some more.
“I’m sorry that I’m late, dear. I just got back from checking on Rainbow Dash. She hurt herself really badly and well… I was at her bedside all night,” Rarity said as she took her seat at the table.
“Oh my, I hope she is okay. Is there anything I can do to help?” The look of worry for her friend was very visible on her face.
“Yes, she seems okay, she was awake long before me. And I can only think of one thing you could do to help. Can she borrow the next issue of ‘Daring Do’?” Rarity smiled as Twilight was trying hard not to giggle.
“Of course she can borrow the next copy, I was already wondering when she would show up and ask me for it. We can pick it up after we had some tea.” She barely got the words out before she burst out laughing.
“Thank you so much, Twilight. Rainbow was about to burst out of her wrappings when I told her about asking to borrow it. But enough of that stuff, Rainbow is fine and will be out in no time, so tell me more about you and Applejack,” Rarity said with a smile trying not to seem to push the topic on to her, but Twilight’s face still turned red and her eyes went looking everywhere but at Rarity.
“I don’t really know where to start...” Twilight’s eyes finally locked back on Rarity.
“How about we start from beginning. Like when did you start to develop feelings for her?” The smile never left her face. She could tell that Twilight was still feeling shy talking about her feelings. But from the many things they learned over the time they knew each other. They learned that it was not good to keep so many things bottled up.
“Well, that would be the best way to start.” Twilight took a deep breath before she began. “It happened back when Nightmare Moon came back. You know, when I was holding onto the edge of a cliff for dear life. The look Applejack gave me when she told to let go, nopony had ever made me feel so trusting. And my feelings only have grown from that point on.” The last words end with a gasp as Twilight took in some well needed air.
Rarity was kind of dumbstruck at how much Twilight had said in one breath. But that passed as an excited grin slowly made its way on her face. She was about to respond something, but was cut off by a stallion dropping his hoof down on the table to draw Rarity’s focus on him. She looked up to see a stallion with a green coat and a blood red mane.
“How can I help you, sir?” Rarity asked, already annoyed at the stallion for barging in on her private talk with Twilight.
“Yeah, you can go with me to the movies tonight and forget about that fillyfooler everyone is saying you are with. And then show them that you’d rather be with a stallion like me.” His voice just accented his oversized ego. Rarity’s brow began to lower at hearing him use such language to talk about her special somepony. She rose out of her chair to look him straight in the eyes.
“I’ll have you know, sir, that such language won’t win a mare over. And I won’t stand for such words being said at all about her. I can tell you that she has much more manners than you ever will have. She loves me for being me and not only for my looks. So I will tell you to take that movie and… and… stick it right where the sun doesn’t shine.” Her face took a red shade from how angry she was feeling, and also a little ashamed for using such a crude language like that in public.
The stallion just looked at her and grinned like a maniac before pushing her to the ground. He placed two of his hooves on her shoulders to keep her down. “Don’t you know that mares are to date stallions like me and not some good for nothing mares like Rainbow Da…” He was cut short as a hoof kicked him in his ‘happy area’. This caused him to roll to his side and replace his hooves to cover that spot from any more attacks. Rarity got up and walked over to a still shocked Twilight, motioning for her to leave with her. Before exiting the café, Rarity looked back at him, disdain clear in her eyes.
“I hope you have learned never to say such mean things about her again. If you clean up your act and treat others better, you might find someone someday.” That being said, Rarity left with Twilight to pick up a copy of ‘Daring Do’ for her beloved Rainbow Dash.
