The Rainbow in the Rough
Chapter 5: The Diamond Holds the Rainbow
Previous Chapter Next Chapter
The rainbow mane Pegasus slowly wakes in a room she hadn’t seen before. As she became more aware of the world around her, she could feel the warm breath of somepony slowly breathing on her neck. Rainbow Dash sighs happily feeling the warmth of Rarity’s body against hers, wishing this moment could last forever, but she had a job to do.
Rainbow Dash moved slowly so as not to wake her sweet Rarity. Once she was free, and able to see Rarity curled up like she had once had somepony to hold. The sight warmed her heart to see how lovely Rarity looked. Rainbow smiled and leans over, kissing her on the forehead.
With the worries that had caused her to seek the comfort of her marefriend gone from her mind, she set out to do her daily job, like she had done the day before. The work seemed like nothing to her now, she felt free to think about other things as the work passed by.
A little while had passed from when Rainbow Dash left the place, and Rarity slowly wakes up as the sunlight begins to shine into her room. She slowly moves her hoofs around feeling for the body that she held not long ago, letting out a grumble and sitting up, looking around the room with sleepy eyes.
“I guess…” Rarity lets out light yawn. “Rainbow dash went off to work. That is good to see. If she is feeling better, then I must have done something right.” The young mare slowly got out of bed and made her way to the mirror to do her usual morning check of her mane. There was one spot that was really frizzy from where Rainbow's head had been while they were sleeping. Rarity face got a little warm as she remembers cuddling the sleeping Pegasus before she herself fell sleep.
One of the best parts of owning your own business is that you get to pick your hours as long as you meet deadlines. So with a good few days to finish three dresses, she head's for the shower to get her mane back to its perfect state. It was nothing for her to get her hair to this, she had been doing this for years.
Rarity goes back to her studio, where all her dress making happened. The room was a complete mess, but it was her mess and it was just how she liked it! She knew where everything was. She just had a few touch-ups on a few dresses that she was working on. Tomorrow the client would stop by to see how the dresses where coming along and to give feedback on what else Rarity should do for them.
She had only worked a few hours on the dresses when she hears the bell at the front door, letting her know that she had a guest. “I will be with you in a few, Darling,” She says, completing the last bit of the touch-up she had planned for the day. She walks down the stairs to see who had come to her shop, smiling as she sees who it was, moving closer. “Hello, Twilight. What can brings you by on such a lovely day?”
Twilight shifted from side to side with a look of worry, but, then again, when didn’t’ she have a look of worry when she came to see her friends? Looking back at all the things that had happened to them, that look was pretty normal. “Well, Rarity… there have been things said around town about you and Rainbow Dash,” Rarity looks closer at Twilight, seeing that she looked kind of scared on top of the usual look of worry.
Rarity moves closer to Twilight and puts a hoof on her shoulder. “What have they been saying dear?” Twilight looks up at her and lets out a sigh.
“They say that you and Rainbow Dash are a couple now, and that you two shouldn’t be together since you both are mares,” She says, looking down again.
“Twilight dear, you are my best friend, I can tell when you have more to say. Now tell me what is bothering you so much right now,” Rarity asks with a smile on her snout.
Twilight looks up, and now Rarity could see tears starting to roll down her cheeks. “I think they are wrong, saying such things about you two. And I feel broken…” She looks back down in what could be called shame. Rarity had never seen Twilight like this before. “Now, I feel like I can be truthful about my feelings for…” She stops before she could say the name of the pony she cares about.
“Who darling? It seems that you know who I have feelings for, so why don’t we both talk about these things together?”
“Applejack,” She said so soft and quiet, to the point where Rarity almost missed what she had said. Rarity pulls Twilight into a big hug that about knocked the air out of the poor little alicorn. “Rari… Rarity, please let go… I can’t breathe,” She stammers, gasping for air.
“Sorry dear, I-I kind of was overcome with joy that you have such a great special somepony,” Rarity moves back a bit, Twilight blushing deeply now as she looks down at the ground. Rarity places a hoof under Twilight's chin and raises it up so she could see her eyes. “Don’t be ashamed of your feelings for her. Just follow me to the dining room and we can talk about things while enjoying a nice cup of tea.” Rarity smiles, walking Twilight back. She knew how hard it had been for her to hide her own feelings for Rainbow Dash, but she now had an outlet to help her. Twilight just followed books, and Rarity didn’t know how many of those books had stuff that would actually help.
Rainbow Dash was just finishing her weather clearing job for today. She still had time before she would head out to see Rarity again, so she did the one thing that she did when she had nothing to do: She flew over to a good cloud and flopped her back down on it, letting out a yawn as she slowly drifts off to sleep for a quick nap.
She had only just fallen asleep for a few minutes before she could hear whispering around her. She just brushes it off as somepony flying by and not trying to wake her, but the whispering didn’t fade, instead, it grew like more and more ponies were joining together to whisper. That was it she thought, I can't take it anymore! She jumps up off the cloud, seeing a whole group of ponies staring at her.
“What the hay are you ponies whispering about, and why are you all looking at me?” She screams, sending most of the ponies flying away, but a few lingered, grinning at her. One of the bigger looking Pegasus move closer to her.
“We are talking about the mare loving mare sleeping on the cloud. And some of them are wondering why she even shows her face for all to see,” he said in a voice that would send most running for the hills, but that was not Rainbow Dash.
“I’m what and why wouldn’t I show my awesome face for all to see?” She exclaims, indignantly.
“You heard me little mare! You are a mare loving mare, and that is just wrong! It should be a mare and stallion, never two mares. You should just leave town or something,” He said in such a way that just made Rainbow Dash want to give him a quick buck in the side, but then something dawned on her. I can’t do this, what if I get hurt and then they choose to pick on Rarity? Best thing I can do, is do the one things I’m awesome at, flying fast.
As the group move closer to her. She grin and turn around and sped away. She looked back to see if they were still after her. And not a real big shock to Rainbow, they were trying their best to keep up with her. This went on for a while, but out of nowhere they just stopped. When she looked ahead of her, it was too late. Her body smacked the side of the mountain going about fast enough to cause a sonic rainboom.
Rarity was just on her way back to Carousel Boutique, but before she could even get her hoof to the door, Applejack came rushing to her with panic written all over her face. She came to a stop in a cloud of dust, breathing fast and trying to get her words out.
“Rainbow…. Hurt… You need to come….” She gasps out, hoping Rarity knew what she was trying to say. The look on Rarity’s face was nothing but a blank slate. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing, there was no way that Rainbow Dash could be hurt so bad that Applejack would rush here this fast or this late. When it got through to her what was happening, she nodded her head, telling Applejack to take her to Rainbow.
With a nod back from Applejack, they were off to the hospital. The race over to the hospital felt like it was taking forever for Rarity, the sun was just about gone by the time they got there. Rarity was not in any mood to be polite and ask for other ponies to move out of the way, she just pushed her way through and slammed both her front hoofs on the information counter. “Rainbow Dash’s room, now please!” She said trying to keep her voice from rising to a yell.
“What relations are you to Miss. Dash?” The nurse asked, not really caring how much of a rush Rarity was in at the moment. Rarity had to think a second and give up trying to sugar coat it.
“I’m her marefriend,”
“It shows that she has no next of kin or family in the area,” She said looking at the papers she had pulled out of her files.
“So what, just let me back in to her room now please!” Rarity said, raising her voice now.
“Fine, I don’t see what could hurt. I think that having some friends nearby might help her feel better.” The nurse sighed, she wasn’t getting paid enough to deal with this all the time. She points down the hall to Rainbow’s room, and Rarity didn’t waste any time rushing down the hall.
Rarity’s heart just shrank when she saw a bandage covered Rainbow. She rushes over to her side and rests her head onto one of Rainbow’s hoofs that wasn’t covered, seeming safe to touch. Rainbow was under enough medication that she was out like a rock though, more so then she normally would have been. Rarity told herself that she wouldn’t leave Rainbow’s side till she woke up. The sun set, with Rarity falling asleep in the chair next to Rainbow.
