Chapter 233: Penny Sally

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Author's notes: Ok, atsf made a slight mistake. Penny Sally isn't Stuart/Peter Sam's twin sister, she's his younger sister. They were built at the same works, but not at the same time. Other then that, enjoy the story.

Penny Sally

Narrator: Another morning later, the ponies, the engines and drivers were still talking about the MSR.

Rex: You know Duke, I realized you and Sir Handel had a lot of brothers and sisters working together. Quite amazing.

Sweetie Belle: But mind you, didn't Peter Sam have a sibling too?

Peter Sam: Oh yes. Came from the same works as I did. Her name was Penny Sally.

Duke: Ah yes. I remember her well. A sensible engine but a tad bit timid sometimes. Nevertheless, she was a good worker all the same.

Peter Sam: You're right there.

Rex: So what happened to her?

Narrator: Soon, Duke cleared his throat and began telling the story of Penny Sally

(Mid Sodor years, 1930.)

Narrator: Penny Sally was an engine who worked on the Mid Sodor Railway many years ago. She was a kind little engine and was determined to always do her best. But, she always seemed timid and very shy at times. Like all good engines though, she was willing to do her best whilst working with Miss Ravens and Fluttershy. On her first day, she was to take some trucks up over to Arlesdale for Tim to take to the lead mines. She was very nervous.

Penny Sally: Oh dear. I hope I do alright. I couldn't bear it if I screw up. I'll be made fun of.

Fluttershy: There there now. It's okay. I think you'll do very good.

Miss Ravens: Fluttershy is right. Just relax. Keep calm and you'll do very well.

Narrator: Penny Sally took a deep breath and they started off. Penny Sally was nervous when she left Arlesburgh, but when she reached the open line and she marvelled the beautiful quiet scenery that laid before. She began to feel better.

Penny Sally: Oh my word. How beautiful this scenery is. It's so colourful, peaceful and tranquil.

Fluttershy: I know. It reminds me of my home with all the cute little animals. It makes it even more beautiful.

Miss Ravens: (Sigh) It reminds me of the all the times when me and my friend William Holden and our families would come here to have one of our picnics.

Narrator: Penny Sally wanted to hear more about the picnics that Miss Ravens and Mr. Holden had with their families, but the trucks had other ideas.

Trucks: She's new… heheheh. Let's give her the old fashion truck initiation.

Narrator: Soon, they were approaching Arlesdale works station and were just about to enter the platform, when the trucks surged forward.

Trucks: ON! ON! ON!

Narrator: And banging their buffers, they surged into Penny Sally and pushed her off the rails at the crossover.

(Penny Sally derails.)

Penny Sally: WHOA! OOFFPPFF!

Narrator: Luckily, no one was hurt; but poor Penny Sally felt very embarrassed, especially when Stuart came around with a down goods train.

Stuart: Oh dear. Penny Sally are you alright?

Narrator: Penny Sally didn't answer. She was too ashamed of herself.

Stuart: Don't worry. I'll get the cranes and then we'll get you back on the rails.

Narrator: Stuart left his trucks in a siding and went to collect the breakdown train. They lifted her back on the rails.

Mr. Holden: What happened?

Miss Ravens: The trucks pushed us and derailed Penny Sally at the crossover.

Mr. Holden: Oh my. I'm sorry that happened to you girls.

Penny Sally: (Sad tear drops.) So am I. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to spoil this all.

Miss Ravens: Don't worry. It wasn't you're fault at all.

Fluttershy: Yeah. It was those troublesome trucks that caused this.

Narrator: But poor Penny sally wasn't convinced. At last, Penny Sally was re railed and went away, sad and tearful. She didn't even noticed Tim, who had just come up to pick up the trucks. He felt worried for her. That night in the sheds, Penny Sally was feeling very sad. The other's had heard about the accident and couldn't help but laugh. Jerry, Rarity, Rainbow Dash, Mighty and Mac though she was just being silly.

Rainbow Dash: Bahahahahaha! so did you have a nice trip there Penny Sally? Hahahaha

Rarity: My word. I've heard of taking a train trip, but who would have thought that the engine could also take a trip. HEHAHAHAHAHA. Too rich! Hahahahaha.

Jerry: Try not to trip again next fall. Hahahahaha.

Mighty: Hahahah! Oh, good one, Jerry.

Mac: Yeah, because we sometimes fall off the track, and there is a season called 'Fall'. Hahahah!

Narrator: Poor Penny Sally felt very embarrassed and began to burst into tears. Then, before anyone could say anything…

Penny Sally: (Crying.) STOP IT! PLEASE STOP IT!

Stuart: (Furious.) SHUT UP!

Tim: (Furious) AND LEAVE HER ALONE!

Narrator: Everyone was shocked! No one had ever heard Tim speak up so loudly and angrily before.

Stuart: That's no way to treat a new engine like that, let alone my younger sister!

Jerry: But we were just joking.

Mighty: Have you even heard of a…

Tim: That's no excuse Jerry! Penny Sally was on her first trip let alone her first trial run in her life on this railway! Can't you see you're making her feel unwelcome here!

Rarity: Well I never, and what gives you any right to speak to us like this.

Tim: All 5 of you are being very rude to our new friend here. Can't see how upset she is.

Rainbow Dash: Oh come on. She should just grow up right now…

Mac: Yeah. She should get over….

Tim: Shut your mouth, Mac. Penny Sally was very nervous when she derailed. She felt very bad. How dare you all! You all maybe much more experienced than her but that does not give any of you all the right to degraded her like this. She's trying hard to be a useful engine like all of us and DON'T YOU DARE DEGRADE HER LIKE THIS!

Narrator: Everyone remained quiet. Jerry, Mighty and Mac remained silent for the whole evening after the ponies and the drivers left. Tim saw Penny Sally still in tears.

Tim: (Sadly.) Oh dear. I've done it again. I've wrecked another life. I've upset some badly. I'm such a bad engine.

Narrator: Penny Sally was about to cry herself to sleep when she then heard whimpering. She looked over and found out where it came from. Tim had begun to cry.

Tim: Oh, Penny Sally. I'm so sorry. I've only made things from bad to worse. That's all I ever do. I'm such a horrid engine.

Penny Sally: Calm down Tim. You were magnificent.

Narrator: Tim sighed sadly and told her about his incident with Clayton.

Penny Sally: Oh my. That's horrible.

Tim: Please don't tell anyone else.

Penny Sally: Don't worry. I promise.

Narrator: Then Tim spoke up again.

Tim: You shouldn't let there teasing get to you like that. We all make mistakes. Even on our first trips.

Narrator: Penny sally sighed sadly.

Penny Sally: I know, but it just felt so embarrassing, especially since it was my first trip.

Tim: Just try to keep your chin up. You'll do alright. We all make mistakes the first time, remember? You're still fairly new. We all were new engines once. You'll do alright. I promise.

Narrator: Rather doubtfully, Penny Sally went to sleep. By morning, the ponies along with Miss Ravens and Mr. Holden all arrived for work and Rainbow Dash and Rarity along with Jerry, Mighty and Mac apologised for last night. Penny Sally forgave them, but she had thought a great deal the night before and was worried.

Penny Sally: I'll have to do much better today and be more alert. We are pulling passengers today on the Mountain Road. Duke told me that is very difficult to tackle.

Miss Ravens: Don't worry. We'll take great care and you'll be fine.

Fluttershy: And Miss Ravens and I will be with you every wheel turn of the way.

Narrator: So with that, Fluttershy and Miss Ravens climbed aboard and they went to collect the passengers. When Penny Sally went to collect her coaches she backed onto them nervously.

Fluttershy: Don't worry. You'll be alright.

Narrator: Soon they went to the station, collected their passengers and then they started away. The first portion of the journey went without a hitch and Penny Sally felt happy.

Penny Sally: (Sigh.) It's so nice lovely day here. I just hope I don't derail at the crossover again.

Fluttershy: Don't worry. You'll be just fine.

Miss Ravens: We'll take it slowly when we come to it.

Narrator: Soon, much too soon for Penny Sally, they neared the work station and approached the crossover. She was nervous as she neared the place. She closed her eyes anticipating a derailment, but it never happened. She had done it.

Fluttershy: Look Penny Sally. You did it! You did it! Yay!

Penny Sally: Why… I did it! Yes! Haha! Maybe I've finally proven myself after all.

Miss Ravens: You certainly did, Penny Sally. Well done.

Narrator: After collecting her passengers at Arlesdale work station, she happily set off again. She then got to admire all the beautiful scenery. She soon ended her journey at the top station and happily took his coaches back down the line. Tim was waiting Arlesdale when he noticed Penny Sally puff in very happy, which made Tim smile for the first time in years.

Tim: Hullo there Penny Sally. I take it you had a good journey.

Penny Sally: I sure did. Thank you for everything Tim. I feel so much more confident now.

Fluttershy: Indeed she did Tim. We're very pleased with her.

Narrator: Just then the guards flag waved and Penny Sally puffed away happily. Tim went happily back to work as well. Penny Sally became a very useful engine. The trucks and coaches behaved well, her trains were punctual and the manager was very impressed.

Manager: Penny Sally, I must say I am very pleased with you. You've truly proven you're money's worth and are a really useful engine.

Penny Sally: Oh, thank you sir.

Narrator: But, 5 years past. The railway began to decline and Penny Sally began to develop steaming troubles and was often struggling with her trains. Miss Ravens, Mr. Holden and the ponies all tried their best to fix her up but it only turned to be short lived. One day, Penny Sally was taking a usual passenger train up the line. Despite feeling poor, the first stage of the journey went without any problems. But soon, they began to climb the Mountain Road and she felt short of steam. As a matter of fact, by the time they reached the top station, she was worn out. Miss Ravens and Fluttershy got down and checked her all over before starting the down journey.

(1935)

Miss Ravens: Oh dear. It beats me. I'm sorry Penny Sally old girl, but we can't find anything wrong with you.

Fluttershy: And now we've got to get this train back to Arlesburgh. Do you think you can still get us there?

Penny Sally: (Doubtfully.) I'll try.

Miss Ravens: That's a good engine. Me and Fluttershy will be with you every wheel turn of the way. Just do your best.

Narrator: Penny Sally managed to start. The coaches were running well, but she was still feeling very weak. She struggled on. As she passed each station, sadly, she grew weaker.

Penny Sally: I must make it! I must make it!

Narrator: Penny Sally gave it everything she had, but it was no use despite her best efforts and from Fluttershy and Miss Ravens. With a loud bang and hiss of steam, poor Penny Sally came to a depressing stop outside the works station.

Miss Ravens: Oh dear. You've burst you're cylinders.

Fluttershy: Oh my. I'm sorry Penny Sally, but I'm afraid you won't be able to take the train on.

Narrator: Penny Sally began to cry.

Penny Sally: (Crying.) Oh no… Why did it have to be me to always be a burden on this railway.

Fluttershy: (Tears.) Don't say that. You did very well today. Me and Miss Ravens are very proud of you.

Miss Ravens: Indeed we are. You are still a really useful engine in our eyes.

Narrator: Soon, Stuart arrived to take the train on once Penny Sally was uncoupled and put on a siding out of the way.

Stuart: I'm sorry that happened to you Penny Sally, I really am. But you did very good to get the train this far.

Narrator: Then the manager came to see her. Penny Sally's heart sank.

Manager: (Sadly.) Penny Sally, I'm very pleased with all you're work you did these last few years and today's trip. I am very proud of you. You truly are a very really useful engine. But I'm afraid that due to our financial difficulty, we are unable to mend you.

Narrator: Penny Sally burst into tears and so did Fluttershy. Miss Ravens was on the edge of tears as well.

Miss Ravens: Oh sir, please. You can't scrap her. Please sir. She's done wonders with this railway.

Manager: After all the good work she's done, I would never dream of scrap of scrapping her. There is still hope for Penny Sally. we'll put you into one of our storage sheds until we can get enough money to repair you.

Penny Sally: (Sadly still in tears.) Thank you Sir. I'll keep the faith.

Narrator: Duke who was in the sheds came to shunt Penny Sally into the storage shed. He too felt sorry for her.

Duke: (Sad.) I'm sorry that happened to you Penny Sally, but you're efforts today will not go unheard, and his grace would be very proud of you.

Penny Sally: (Sadly in tears.) Thank you Duke. You, Peter Sam, Fluttershy, Miss Ravens and Tim are the best friends I've ever had. Please tell them that.

Duke: On my honour of his grace, I promise.

Narrator: And with that, Duke puffed away sorrowfully to collect his trucks.

(Crovans gate, 1990.)

Narrator: The ponies, engines and staff stood in shock.

Rex: What happened to Penny Sally after that?

Duke: Well… (a tear drips down) our railway was steadily decline and the manager was unable to make enough money to restore her to operating condition. Soon enough, she, Mistress and Her Sandel had to have some of their parts salvaged to help mend us.

Sweetie Belle: (In tears.) Oh the poor engine…. I feel so sorry for her and Mistress and Her Sandel.

Narrator: Pipsqueak hugged her tight as Sweetie Belle buried her faces within his shoulder.

Pipsqueak: There there Sweetie Belle there there. (Kisses her on her unicorn horn.)

Narrator: Poor Peter Sam was in tears too. Rachel comforted him by his side.

Rachel: Oh my. I'm so sorry Peter Sam… (Kisses Peter Sam on the lips.)

Peter Sam: Thank you, my darling.

Narrator: And with that the ponies, engines and drivers all remained respectfully silent.
