John never did get along with his brother, Derek, and didn't mind when he lost contact. But when the two finally met again in Equestria it ended up costing the latter his life.
As a result John now feels guilty, and he is desperate to make amends. But in order to do so he will be forced to suffer as his brother did — as he journeys through the afterlife itself in search of the redemption he seeks. At least with Applejack by his side, he feels that nothing will stand in his way — not even the demons of his past.
