Hero of the Despaired Future!
Chapter 17: Explaining Ki and Super Saiyan!
Previous Chapter Next ChapterPinkie's room...
Twilight sat on the bed, reading a notebook.
Rainbow Dash and Applejack were on the floor, playing video games, and Gohan just watched it.
Fluttershy was just tending to Spike.
Pinkie Pie was on her computer.
Rarity and Sunset were taking pictures...
"Status update: 'Okie-dokie-lokie!'" Pinkie said, typing that down.
Now, Rarity, Sunset and Fluttershy were going to take a group selfie, and nobody noticed Spike posing in the back with a dog treat.
When Rarity looked at the photo, she looked at Spike angrily, who smirked back in return.
Well, Applejack and Rainbow Dash were playing the game...
Rainbow Dash was obviously losing, and since she's also got the same pride as Vegeta...
She slammed the console and shut down the game.
"Hey! I was about to beat you!" Applejack said.
"I doubt it." Rainbow Dash said, spinning the controller on her finger.
"She was, you had 5 health and she had 50, and she had you in a corner." Gohan said.
"So, Twilight, how is that counter-spell comin'?" Rainbow Dash asked.
"Huh? Oh! Good! Er... Great!" Twilight lied.
Obviously she had no idea what to do.
"Thanks for letting me use your notebook, Fluttershy. I really like the song you wrote for the Rainbooms." Twilight said.
"Thanks." Fluttershy said, before sighing.
"Hopefully one day, we'll get a chance to play it." She said, looking at Rainbow Dash, who stole Applejack's controller...
She was laughing while Applejack tried to grab it...
"Hey!" Applejack yelled.
...Then both controllers were suddenly swiped from her hands.
"Wait, what the...?" Rainbow Dash asked.
"You're going to lose your game privileges if you keep at it." Gohan said, holding both controllers.
He handed one back to Applejack.
"How did you reach it from over there?" Rainbow Dash asked.
"It's called movement, it's not rocket science." Gohan said.
"I didn't see you, though." Rainbow Dash said.
"Me neither." Applejack said.
"Come to the most logical conclusion as to why." Gohan said.
Then Rarity got up on the bed with Twilight...
"Twilight, I think I speak for all of us when I say I don't know what we would have done if you hadn't come back to help us." She said.
Yeah, agreement from everyone.
"You know, save him just blasting them to the moon." Rainbow Dash said.
"The moon would be gone for the third time in a row, then." Gohan said, placing the controller down.
"The moon's been destroyed?" Twilight asked.
"First by my dad's first mentor, then by my first mentor." Gohan said.
"How did it get restored?" Twilight asked.
"Dragon balls." Gohan said.
"...That's disgusting." Spike said.
"No, he means those magical wish orb thingies!" Pinkie said.
"They aren't literal... parts of a dragon's anatomy. There are seven of them, and when you gather them together, a magical dragon comes out to grant any wish. Then he retreats back into the balls and they get scattered all over the planet." Gohan said.
"The only problem is, they're permanently out of use." He said.
"Why's that?" Fluttershy asked.
"The one who created them died. Therefore, the dragon balls are now defunct. We can't bring back anyone who dies anymore." Gohan said.
"You sound like you have a lot of insight..." Rarity said.
"There's another set of dragon balls that exist, they're just on another planet that we can't find." Gohan said.
"How do you know that?" Sunset asked.
"I went to Planet Namek with some others, they had a set of dragon balls too. Since there was a galactic tyrant who was also a sore loser, he blew up the planet. But, our dragon balls were used to save all the Namekians by bringing them and us here. Then, we used their dragon balls to bring back some people who died and then their planet. We also sent them to their new planet, but we don't have the coordinates to that planet." Gohan said.
...
"...That didn't really stick." Rainbow Dash said.
"I lost you at the galactic tyrant." Sunset said.
"Long story short, dragon balls grant wishes, there's another set but we can't find them." Gohan said.
"More stories! More stories!" Pinkie said.
"Stories?" Gohan asked.
"Yeah, how'd you beat some people?" Rainbow Dash asked.
"Technically I've only assisted in victories apart from the Androids." Gohan said.
"That includes-" "Don't you even say it." Sunset interrupted Gohan.
"Tell us some adventures!" Pinkie said.
"No, they're too gruesome and... I don't want to go back to it." Gohan said.
'The most recent episode involving mom...' He thought.
You know how he asked his mama?
Going into the kitchen...
"Uh... Mom?" He asked.
"Welcome home, Gohan." Chi Chi said, cooking up a storm.
"Hey there, champ." Ox-King said, sitting on one of the chairs.
"Hey, Grandpa Ox. How's the castle?" Gohan asked.
"Still burnt. I found some treasure rummaging through the rubble." Ox-King said.
"That's nice." Gohan said.
Chi Chi was cooking some chahan, or fried rice in a pan.
"Mom, can I ask you something...?" Gohan asked.
"What is it?" Chi Chi asked.
"Uh... Some friends invited me to a sleepover..." Gohan said.
"...No." Chi Chi said.
"Mom, please." Gohan said.
"I already know that Fluttershy girl is going to be there, and I don't want you hanging around her more than you need to!" Chi Chi said.
"Honey, just let him go, it can't hurt." Ox-King said.
"I have six other friends apart from her who are going!" Gohan said.
"You're already training against my wishes, I don't need you doing this now!" Chi Chi yelled.
"Your studies are already jeopardized from that training!" She said.
"Look, mom, I'm begging you here..." Gohan said.
"I don't want anyone taking my son away from me too quickly!" Chi Chi said.
"I still fail to understand what you mean by that..." Gohan said.
"...Mom, please. There's something really awful going on at school, and-" "-Nobody's bullying you, are they!?" Chi Chi interrupted.
"Wha- No! It's really important, we need to plan something out!" Gohan said, knowing full well that they weren't going to plan shit.
"...Ugh. Fine, Gohan." Chi Chi said.
"I'm still having a hard time realizing that you're all grown up and want to do your things..." She said, turning the flame off.
"...However!" She yelled, scaring Gohan.
And Gohan was sent off with half a dinner and his clothes...
Chi Chi and the Ox-King remained at home, and...
"I still don't understand why you don't want to let him go with some friends." Ox-King said, still sitting.
Chi Chi turned to an old family photo, right on this small table.
It was a cute photo of the Son family...
"...Daddy, Gohan left me to fight the Androids all those years ago, and I don't want to let him go... Not again. No matter what I told him, he ran away. I'm afraid he'll do it again..." Chi Chi said.
"Honey... Gohan won't run this time. He's grown to be a polite young man. He only ran for the better. And hey, he beat the Androids!" Ox-King said.
"You have to let him choose his own path." He said.
"Yeah... You're right..." Chi Chi said, placing the picture back on the table.
"...I'm also afraid that some underage girl is going to chase after him." She said.
"...Now, I'm with you on that one." Ox-King said.
"We understand, you can't relay some more heartbreaking details to us..." Rarity said.
"Can you explain your power to me?" Twilight asked.
"You said it wasn't magic, and I find that difficult to believe." She added.
"Oh, right. Now that everyone's here... I should explain ki." Gohan said.
"Ki?" Spike and Twilight asked.
"Life energy. To utilize ki is to use your own life energy in many ways possible." Gohan said.
"To increase the supply of it, you strengthen your body and mind. It involves focus and a strong body." He said.
"Apparently this guy couldn't use it until he could whack dinosaurs around." Rainbow Dash explained to Twilight.
"What are dinosaurs...?" Twilight asked.
"Think of them as dragons but with a majority of them not being winged." Gohan said.
"Here, let me show you an example of basic ki." He said, holding his hand out.
He aimed his palm out, and made a yellow sphere of ki float there.
"Dang." Spike said.
Then, Gohan started directing it all over the room with his arm.
It flew over Pinkie's head, it burned Spike's dog treat and it started going crazy.
"Hey!" Spike yelled.
Eventually, Gohan made it fly back to his palm with a swift arm movement back around.
It just exploded into tiny yellow droplets that disintegrated immediately.
"That's impressive..." Twilight said.
"I can use it to increase my power, too." He said.
He clenched a fist and had a very small yellow aura around it.
"Ki is very malleable, in the sense that you can increase your own power many times fold. That power increase is not to be confused with Super Saiyan." He said.
Then, the aura suddenly disappeared.
"What is Super Saiyan, then?" Twilight asked.
"It's a power up. It boosts all your abilities tens of times over." Gohan said.
"Can we do it?" Rainbow Dash asked.
Gohan shook his head.
"As the name suggests, it's for Saiyans only. There could be another power up, but I don't know about it." He said.
"Now that I think about it... Saiyan as in... the Saiyans who attacked Earth?" Rarity asked.
"Yeah. Those ones." Gohan said.
"...So you're a Saiyan...?" Applejack asked.
"Half Saiyan. I'm also human. My dad was a Saiyan, but he... Let's say he was an oddball." Gohan said.
"In what sense?" Sunset asked.
"Saiyans are generally ruthless, forceful and mean." Gohan said.
"...I think we made the connection." Rarity said.
"Yeah. I don't know too much about the Saiyans, other than being a warrior race." Gohan said.
"How is Super Saiyan obtained, exactly?" Twilight asked.
"Pure rage." Gohan said.
"Is that the only way...?" Twilight asked.
"As far as I know, yeah. There might be another way, but rage is the only way I know right now." Gohan said.
"Can you show us?" Twilight asked.
"Here?" Gohan asked.
"Eh, we're bored." Pinkie said.
"I don't know... It doesn't look like the right time." Gohan said.
"I'm sorry, but this is so impressive! I've never seen anything like this in Equestria!" Twilight said excitedly.
"It's not pleasant for me to use it. It comes from rage, and I don't like to think about it." Gohan said.
"Oh... Sorry." Twilight said.
"Don't worry about it." Gohan said.
"...Do you wear anything other than the fighter wear?" Twilight asked.
"I have nightwear." Gohan said.
"Yeah, but, anything else?" Twilight asked.
"Not for a long while..." Gohan said.
"Why, though...?" Spike asked.
Gohan put a hand on his gi.
"This gi... I made it to resemble my dad's. I want to be strong like him, but that's easier said than done..." He said.
"I can only imagine that threshold." Twilight said.
"Why isn't he here fighting with you, then?" Pinkie asked innocently.
Now, that was a really good question...
Gohan paused for a moment...
"...To put it shortly, he's defending another place at the moment... He left Earth in our hands." He said.
'Dad may be dead. But he's still training out there. He did it before, there's no reason why he isn't now.' He thought.
"How much strength do you have?" Pinkie asked.
Gohan pondered about it...
"I could probably destroy a planet with a relatively powerful blast." He said.
Everyone just looked at him, shocked.
"A planet!?" Applejack asked.
"I-Is that really a shock...?" Gohan asked.
"The moon was already destroyed twice..." He said.
"Look, that means you're stronger than Princess Celestia!" Twilight said.
"Yeah... She's right." Sunset said.
"Princess Celestia?" Gohan asked, tilting his head to the left.
"In Equestria, we have Princess Celestia and Princess Luna. They raise the sun and moon respectively." Sunset said.
"They are some of the strongest around, but I don't think they can handle destroying an entire planet..." Twilight said.
"Well, moving the sun is a major feat in and of itself..." Gohan said.
"I can't even withstand the heat of the sun..." He said.
"At least you're not too busted." Rainbow Dash said.
"Magma proved to be pretty tough for my ki, and that's just around 1,100 kelvins. The sun alone is 5,778 kelvins, and that's definitely overkill." Gohan said.
"Why aren't you using Fahrenheit...?" Applejack asked.
"Or Celsius?" Rarity asked.
"The Celsius and Fahrenheit scale is based on the freezing and boiling points of water and has nothing to do with energy. Kelvin units are based on an absolute scale so that temperature in kelvin is proportional to the energy involved." Gohan said.
...
"...I get it." Twilight said.
"...Kelvin is based on energy, Celsius is based on water." He explained.
...
"...Kelvin is a logical conclusion based on the Gay-Lussac law." Gohan said.
...Then Rainbow Dash and Pinkie started bursting out in laughter respectively.
"Bwahahaha!"
"Ah! Hahahaha!"
...Gohan was confused as to why they were laughing...
It's science!
...Then the doorbell rang.
"Pizza's here!" Pinkie yelled.
...Then everyone but Gohan, Spike and Twilight darted out of the room.
"...You're smarter than you look." Twilight said.
"I'm hoping to be a scholar one day." Gohan said, jumping to his feet.
"Really...?" Twilight and Spike asked.
To think you know a guy...
Then Pinkie stuck her head into the room.
"Don't you want any pizza?" She asked, with a slice stuffed into her mouth.
"I got 20 boxes for you!" She said to Gohan.
"I don't even know what it is." Gohan said, following her out of the room.
Twilight sighed, opening Pinkie's near empty candy drawer and shoving the notebook in there.
She got nothing done.
Everyone was sleeping...
Well, okay, not everyone.
Twilight was still wide awake, and tiptoed over the snoring folks...
Pinkie Pie snailed as she slept, Fluttershy cuddled with Spike and Applejack slept sitting up with her hat over her eyes.
Everyone else was normal.
She reached into the drawer to grab the notebook...
And went into the kitchen.
She turned the light on, and started writing with her mouth.
...Then she spit it out.
"No. That's not gonna work." She said.
"Hey, Twilight."
It was Sunset, standing in the doorway.
"You're up late." She said, walking over to the fridge.
"Speak for yourself." Gohan said, also happening to appear in the doorway.
He wore a light blue button down shirt and pants.
"Why are you up...?" Sunset asked Gohan.
"I developed night terrors because the Androids managed to stick a steel beam into my eye socket when I was 12." Gohan said.
...
Depressing as hell...
"...Then why didn't you scream?" Twilight asked.
"I wake myself up before I scream. Then I sit there for five minutes before laying down again, but you two were up." Gohan said.
"How did you even recover from that...?" Sunset asked.
"I got healed up." Gohan said.
"Anyway, why are you two up?" He asked.
"Just looking over the counter-spell... We only get one shot at this. It has to be perfect." Twilight said.
"And I came in to check on her." Sunset said, opening the fridge.
"Who could possibly need this much whipped cream?" She asked.
"I don't know. I think someone is trying to become a diabetic." Gohan said.
"...Heh. I just noticed... It must be nice to have everyone looking to you for answers to their problems... instead of waiting for you to cause a problem." Sunset said, putting some whipped cream on her thumb.
...Now Gohan felt bad for Sunset.
"Just because everyone expects something from you doesn't mean it's guaranteed to happen." Twilight said.
"Yeah, everyone expected my-" Gohan said, before biting his tongue.
He was about to say his dad and the heart virus...
"...Nevermind. Nothing." He said.
"That's the biggest lie of the century." Sunset said, crossing her arms.
"I'm not trying to get any sympathy here." Gohan said, crossing his arms.
"That's hard." Twilight said.
"Even if you're not qualified, that won't stop everyone from expecting your help." Gohan said, changing the subject.
"...That just makes things harder because the last thing you want to do is..." Twilight said.
"Let everyone down." Twilight and Sunset said.
...Then they smiled at each other.
"Heh. No kidding. Knowing that the planet has no future when you're about to die... Well, that just makes you angry." Gohan said.
"...Also, shut the refrigerator door." He added.
"Why?" Sunset asked.
"Just do it." Gohan said.
Sunset did as she was told and-
"Waaah!" She yelped, jumping back.
"That's why, hah!" Gohan laughed.
It was Maud Pie...
Holding up a pebble.
"...Boulder was hungry." She said.
Then she reached into the cabinet and started pouring crackers on the pebble...
And kept doing that and walked away.
"...I still can't get over the fact that she's related to Pinkie Pie." Sunset said.
"You and me both." Twilight said.
"Anything's possible when it comes to genetics." Gohan said.
"Oh, don't give us that speech again." Sunset said.
"What speech?" Twilight asked.
"...Yeah, it was about DNA and extra chromosomes... But Sunset doesn't want to listen, so I won't bother." Gohan said.
Then Sunset yawned.
"I better get some sleep. Good luck with the counter-spell. Not that you'll need it. This must be nothing compared with the stuff you're expected to deal with as a princess in Equestria." She said, walking towards the bedroom.
Twilight didn't seem too proud about those things...
...
"...Is something wrong?" Gohan asked.
"Yes. Very much so. I don't know if I can do this..." Twilight said.
"What do you mean?" Gohan asked.
"Does this look like a spell to you?" Twilight asked, showing Gohan the notebook.
"...That just looks like scribbles, drawings and nothing productive." Gohan said.
"...I see what you mean." He said.
Twilight put the book down.
"It's so hard having all these burdens...!" She said.
"...Yeah. It's difficult. That's just life for you." Gohan said.
"Life isn't fair." Twilight said.
"Everyone knows that. But you won't get through it with that attitude." Gohan said.
"I don't think I can do this." Twilight said.
"Look, Twilight. The world isn't all sunshine and rainbows, and you know that. It's a very mean and nasty place." Gohan said.
"Life doesn't care about how tough you are. It will beat you to your knees and leave you there forever if you let it. I don't even hit as hard as life. Nothing does." He said.
"What are you trying to say?" Twilight asked.
"You're picturing it as if you have to hit life back with your hardest hit. But it's not like that. Perfection is impossible." Gohan said.
"Life is about how hard you can take and keep moving forward. It always seems too hard, like it does now. That's why we have help." He said.
"...I think I know what you're getting at..." Twilight said.
"If you really don't think you can do it, then don't worry. If you really don't think you're capable, then I'll step in." Gohan said.
"Thanks for the offer, but I have a feeling that I can do this!" Twilight said with pride.
"Good. Now, I'm going back to sleep. Maybe I'll get lucky and I won't wake up for a second time tonight." Gohan said, walking towards the bedroom.
"Good night." He said.
"Good night." Twilight said.
"...Man, he is depressing." She muttered.
