Princess Celestia was looking over the papers that she had just signed for her school for gifted unicorns and her thoughts went to her two personal students at the school; Sunset Shimmer and Dusk Shine. Sunset Shimmer was an orphan that she had taken under her wing after seeing her gifted magical potential and seeked to inspire her to live up to that potential.

Unfortunately it made her arrogant and a bit conceited; not interested in socialising with her fellow students or wanting to make any friends. She frowned at this and started giving Sunset lectures about the magic of Friendship but she found them rather boring.

However she came across Dusk Shine; a young colt that had the same great magical potential as Sunset but was more neurotic and adorable when she had first saw him for himself. She had given him the entrance exam of hatching a dragon’s egg and thanks to a powerful wave of magic; it unlocked the great magical power that the wave had unlocked. After undoing the accidental magic he had caused; she had told him that he would need to learn to control his magic and offered to make him her second personal student at the school.

After some encouraging from his parents Dusk had accepted and made an adorable skip especially after letting him know that he had just received his Cutie Mark.

She planned to have Sunset and Dusk study together hoping it would Sunset open more to friends.

However Sunset was not happy to learn about having to share her spot as Celestia’s top student with a colt and actually saw him as a rival. Especially since his grades matched and even outdone her own in some cases.

Dusk as it turned out was also not keen to socialising but just kept a polite distance from the other students and didn’t have the same arrogance that Sunset had. With them both under her tutelage she had grown fond of them as if they were her own children; she hoped eventually they would develop a friendship that would help them both overcome their own flaws.

After years of Sunset seeing their relationship as a rivalry and having to break up some arguments between them; she had began to wonder if she was too strong in trying to force a friendship between them. They hadn’t argued in quite a white but she wondered that she would still have to keep a close eye on them both as she could still feel the tension between the two.

She would have to change her approach; she was going to visit Dusk in his dorm room at the tower but heard Sunset shouting and sighed. It had been a while but another argument broke out between them it seemed; she would have to take care of this.

She probably guessed that it would be about the quiz they would have gotten their answers back. Sunset had came in second to Dusk in the exam but shy a few points from tying with him; she had made a little mistake in the extra credit questions. It seems even that was enough for Sunset to be set off.

She flew up to the top room and opened the door with her magic.......

Dusk Shine had loved studying at Princess Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns and having his own dorm room with his new dragon friend Spike. Of course he had to contend with Sunset Shimmer who was Princess Celestia’s other personal student; who didn’t like the idea of sharing the top spot with any other student.

Especially when Dusk had gotten a better score than her than just tying with her; that really seemed to set her off.

Princess Celestia had then study together and things were tense and Sunset’s attitude caused arguments to be set off between them. As time went on they managed to be more civil towards eachother even though there was still tension between them.

However they had warmed up to eachother and Dusk began enjoying her company; though he was not especially close to the friends he did have at the school, he found Sunset somepony that he was fond of being around. He was embarrassed to admit that she was a pretty mare but was a lot more confident that he was.

One day a few months ago Sunset was red in the face as she was asking Dusk if he wanted to go out; Dusk asked where she wanted to go with him. Sunset began becoming agitated when she began asking Dusk if he actually knew what she was asking him since she had said she wanted them to go out for snacks and stargazing together.

Dusk’s confusion at her questions caused her to shout in his ear:

“How could you be so smart and yet so dense? How do you get better grades than me? I am asking you out on a date you idiot!!!”

They were silent as Dusk was red in the face and mumbled an acceptance when he found his voice; she had left and then it fully sunk in for Dusk just what he had agreed to.

It was a bit of a tense date but they did find themselves enjoying themselves on it. Dusk walked with her back to her dorm and she had given him a kiss which got them both reddened. They had gone out on a few more dates and even though they had never really made it official; they realised in their heads that they were now marefriend and coltfriend.

They were keeping it on the down low and to themselves; though Spike knew and just went ‘bleh’ about it all. Good thing he said he would keep it secret as Dusk didn’t want his parents to know yet nor did he want Shining Armor to tease him and he was afraid of how Cadance would react. It would be something special with her being the Princess of Love.

As he was enjoying his time going out with Sunset; she had laughed at his attempts to be romantic. Dusk had pretty much scoured every book on romance that he could find and plenty of romance novels as well.

Dusk was reading his exam result in his room when Sunset barged in shouting “What’s this about I hear of you doing better than me on the exam?” Dusk had begun speaking incoherently as he had Sunset’s exam paper shoved into his face. He was trying to apologise when Sunset laughed and told him “just kidding, just wanted to see you red as it’s so much fun to rile you up.”

Dusk was glaring and Sunset asked “so does the most handsome and smart stallion in Equestria want a prize in the form of kissing a fiery redhead?”

“Well I don’t know as I don’t know this stallion and if he would want a prize but I don’t think he would turn down a kiss from you even though I don’t like the idea of you kissing another stallion........” Dusk said but when red when he realised that she was talking about him. Sunset laughed at his denseness and initiated the kiss which Dusk returned.

Then they heard the door opening again....

Princess Celestia blinked as she was not at all expecting to walk in on Dusk and Sunset kissing. Both unicorns were embarrassed and opened mouthed when they looked to the door and saw her at the door silent. Sunset was silent and red faced while Dusk was babbling incoherently and Celestia finally gave a chuckle.

“I must apologise my faithful students; I heard Sunset shouting and I completely misinterpreted whatever was happening. Sorry for bargaining un Dusk and I will leave you two alone now.” Celestia said before leaving; it seems that Dusk and Sunset had fixed things between them themselves right under her nose.
