Chapter 1: One life ends, Another begins

Beep…..Beep….Beep….

That stupid beeping...You’d think living with it all my life I’d get used to it, but it is a constant reminder of what I’m not.

Beep….Beep….Beep….

My name is Adam and I am nothing more but a waste of time and money. I’m sixteen, a bit of a gamer and writer when I am allowed to use a computer, and from that I sound like your average teen, going into a whole story where they go to high school, suffer from bullies before working their way up and getting the girl.

The door creaked open as my nurse Kara walked in. “Hey Adam! Time for your lunch and pills!” She said, picking up a try from her cart and carrying it over to my bed.

Beep….Beep….Beep….

Then comes the harsh reality, I’m not living in a slice of life story, no high school drama, none of that. No trying out for a team. No friends. Just me, a window, the laptop they occasionally let me use and the occasional nurse or doctor. I looked down at the food, not even feeling it as it lays on my lap. “Do you need help eating again?” Kara asks as I shook my head. I lift up my arm shackley and try to get a grip on the plastic spoon, unable to feel if I even have a grip on it as I carefully lift it up out of it’s soup, just to loose my grip halfway to my mouth. I grimace as Kara sighs, taking a napkin to clean me like I’m still a toddler before taking the spoon gently from my hand. “Don’t push yourself, you almost got it that time!”

LIke that's supposed to make me feel better. I suppose being diagnosed with extensive nerve damage as a baby and in your early teens brain cancer will make others optimistic about anything you do. I never got to leave this place, not with a mother who disowned me as soon as she knew I wasn’t the perfect son she wanted, and a father that, although he tries and tries, simply can not be there for me. The best he can to is visit once a quarter and pay for my hospital bills in hopes that they find a cure for a failed product.

Beep….Beep….Beep….

Kara helped the spoon up to my mouth where I reluctantly slurped. I shouldn’t have to do this. I see on tv all the time kids running, playing, having friends, hell having a family. They feed themselves, complain about caring mothers and going outside while I’m stuck here, with no friends, no family who give a damn about me, unable to feed myself...those people don’t realise what they have.... I finished my soup as she gave me my pills for this lunch, handing me a straw for the water. As quickly as Kara showed up she was gone, and I was alone again.

Beep….Beep….Beep….

I look out my window, the sound of traffic outside being my only source of entertainment as the bare walls around me seem to turn gray. The small mirror above the sink showed my state, a unhealthily skinny boy with dead brown eyes and plain brown, messy short hair. Useless. I think to myself as I lay back down. I have nothing better to do with my borrowed, wasted time, might as well sleep some of it away.

Beep….Beep….Beep….

I woke up to see time at a standstill, the birds outside frozen in air as in the beeping from my heart monitor was silent. “Another one of these dreams.” I sigh out, still unable to get out of bed in this dream. All was quiet until I hear it. The sound of clip clopping down the hall. That was slightly new but I decided to let it play out, see what my mind worked up this time. The door was opened up for a unicorn with wings to walk in wearing earthy colored Regalia, thorny crown and all. It’s fur was a brown you would expect to see on the trees in forests and its mane was a dark green with lighter shades of green at the tips of her hair. No I am not kidding, though I wish I was. Her colors reminded me of forests I see in shows and cartoons. “Hello young one, how are you feeling today?” She asked as I stared blankly at her.

This is certainly...different than what I normally dream. I thought as I responded. “You tell me, the answer hasn’t changed for sixteen years.”

“So not well then I presume?” She says in what I assume to be a mothering tone as she trots up to me. She looks up and down my body with a soft frown forming on her muzzle. “Life is cruel, one as young as yourself shouldn’t live like this.” That stupid pity…

“Look lady, I get enough pity from the nurses, I don’t need my dreams to do the same.” I growl out as I turn away. “I am just a waste of space, they shouldn’t waste their breath.”

She sounded sad from behind me as I heard “Isn’t there anyone who cares for you?”

“Yeah, my old man, but I only see him four times a year if I’m lucky. My mom basically disowned me and I apparently have a younger brother who doesn’t know I even exist.” I huff out. “It would be better if my cancer just killed me already. I wouldn’t have to deal with my body, or deal with anything any more. Who knows, maybe I’ll be reborn as something that actually gets to have a family and friends.”

“What if...What if i could offer you a way out? You would have a new life, a new body, a new family. You wouldn’t have to live in a world where you don't get to truly live.” She asks as I start to laugh. “What’s so funny?”

“Just that I could have sworn I stopped dreaming of some divine being offering me a out a long time ago. Apparently I still cling onto the childish belief that someone of something will come and take me away. It’s pathetic really.” I say, not bothering to look at her.

“Say I wasn’t a dream of yours, would you take the offer, even if it meant you would, with the exception of a few flashes and personality traits, have no memory of this life. Would you willingly let yourself become the child of someone who just wants the best for you.”

“Heh, If you were real, I’d take you on that offer any day. There is nothing for me here, never was from the moment I was born.” I said laying back down. I looked back at her and say her smile.

“What is your name young one?” She asked as her emerald eyes shined.

“Adam.” I responded as I started to feel tired….odd….I never get tired while I dream….

“My name is Gaia. Sweet dreams brave Adam, this will be over soon, and your new life awaits.” She spoke as my eyelids just grew so heavy. I drifted into a dreamless sleep, not noticing time start up again.

Beep….Beep….Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-

Gaia watched Adam’s body as she cast her net. Right as he fell asleep, she carefully caught his soul and brought it close for her to see. Souls are always fragile things, even the most bright, and determined ones being easily broken. This one though, this boy, his was a dull gray, barely any consistency at all as it looks ready to fade into nothingness at the slightest movement. I really am saving him. No one, old foe or no deserves that fate. The alicorn goddess thought as she cradled it close to her. She stepped into the astral plane as she spoke to it carefully. “Don’t worry little one, you will have the chance to live your life they way you see fit, nature and family will not be your enemy, but instead allies.” She spoke to the soul as she started to give it shape, a body for it’s own.

The gray glow started to take the shape of a small alicorn, the body having features of a colt. Gaia smiled as she focused on her own magic, giving flesh to the form. After the soul was covered, Gaia only needed to give the energy as the soul made the body it’s own. The wings grew larger as they turned gray and the wing tips a pitch black. The coat grew to the same gray as the wings, before the mane and tail grew a metallic silver. The colts eyes were open, allowing Gaia to see his almost glowing, shining, cyan blue eyes. The colt looked right, then left, a faint trail following his eyes before they slowly shut, the baby curling up into a ball.

Gaia smiled softly as she levitated him close. “It’s okay little one, mother is here.” Gaia smiled as a name sounded though her soul, as it does with all ponies when it comes time to name their young. She looked down at her bundle as she walked through a portal and into a corridor, windows open to show the forests and village outside the castle walls. Comets raced through the night sky as the moon shined, and the sun could be felt getting brighter on the other side of the world. The forests seemingly came alive as the clouds in the sky all parted without the aid of the pegasi. “You see that little one, the world is greeting your birth, the birth of the fifth Alicorn. The birth of you, Gravitas.”
