Challenge of the Shadowbolts: Sweet Sweet Smallfoot
Chapter 8: Wanderer
Previous Chapter Next ChapterAuthor's Notes:
Honestly when it came to trying to pick a name for Smallfoot's disguise, Big Rig was all I got. I was thinking of trucks for a few hours and looking at trucks, and that's the first thing that came up. Plus I think it matches a bit since she does actually turn into a truck.
At least she isn't Large Marge. Right?
As the girls continued to stay grouped together as they walked around in the mall, all of them were in deep conversation with one another, discussing their big plans. And as they walked, the girls were beginning to notice Sour was still being pretty quiet, she barely said a word. It didn't even seem like she was interested in talking with
"Come on dudes, we've got to coax her to talk with Smallfoot," Lemon whispered.
"I fail to see how that will be possible since she doesn't seem the least bit interested," Sugarcoat replied back.
"Maybe we just need to get them to do something that will get them to talk with each other," Sunny replied. She made a quick glimpse behind seeing Sour and Smallfoot still walking side by side, but Sour was still not looking to the girl right beside her.
"But what can we get them to talk about?" Indigo asked.
Little did they know, Smallfoot had thought something out. With the pad of note paper in her hand, she wrote a question busily with her pencil. Once she finished writing it, she tapped Sour's shoulder getting her attention. Sour looked to the note that was written onto the paper.
Are you okay? You seem pretty quiet.
"Oh uh, I'm fine. I guess...", Sour said unsure.
Are you sure? You don't sound okay.
Sour sighed, "I suppose I should be honest. I'm not doing so well. I guess I've been feeling a bit... lonely, I guess."
Smallfoot gave a concerned look.
How come?
"Well, I... I rather not say."
Okay. But if you change your mind you're welcome to talk to me. I'm a pretty good listener.
Sour read the last note in a jiffy and gave a nod in return, "Thanks."
Smallfoot watched as Sour turned her head forward, still looking a bit sad. What could she do to cheer her up? Smallfoot thought, and thought, and thought and then she had an idea.
Hey Sour? You want to know what I do whenever I feel a bit down?
"Um... sure, what is it?"
Smallfoot made a hand gesture, urging her to follow after her. Sour wasn't too sure, but she followed after anyway. What was she going to show her?
Smallfoot took Sour a few more steps and they found themselves entering in a diner with a sign that read 'Oldies Of The Old'. From the outside, there were a few neon lights hanging on the sides of the windows, the floors were checkered with white and black boxes, and there was lots of chrome on the bar table, along with red cushioned seats along the windows that showed the outside of the mall.
Whenever I get a bit sad, I always go for a milkshake here. You like milkshakes?
"Oh, very much so," Sour replied with a friendly smile.
Then allow me to buy you one. Its on the house.
"Um, uh, Big Rig, you don't need to--"
Sour. Its on the house.
Sour stopped protesting. I guess it wouldn't hurt to get a free drink from this new person. Although it did seem strange to get one from a complete stranger. Should she be concerned?
Sour and Smallfoot both moved towards the bar countertop and took their seats. The man working behind the counter saw the two girls take a seat and he offered them both a friendly smile.
"What may I get you two ladies today?" The bartender asked.
Smallfoot wrote on her little piece of paper and presented what she had written to the older man behind the counter.
"A chocolate shake and a minty cookie cream shake. I take it you're the silent type?" The man asked.
Smallfoot gave a nod.
"Very well sweetheart. Coming right up."
Sour paused, and stared back towards Smallfoot.
"How do you know my favorite shake?"
Smallfoot felt her heart fall into the pits of her stomach when the realization hit her. She was posing as a complete stranger to try and ask her out on a date, and yet she did something that would raise suspicions. She had to think of a lie and quick. But what to say, what to say?
You seem like the kind of person that likes minty shakes. Also Sunny told me that was your favorites when we were talking about favorite drinks and food and such.
Sour raised a brow. "Why would they talk to you about that?", Sour said. She paused for a moment to catch herself. She was being rude to her guest. Not to mention this girl was buying her a drink.
"Not that I'm judging, of course..."
Smallfoot just shrugged.
Don't know. I end up talking about a lot of weird things with people.
"I see... but anyways, thank you. I really needed something sweet."
Smallfoot smiled back and winked.
"So anyways, uh, tell me a bit about yourself. I want to get to know you a bit more," Sour said keeping her attention locked on Smallfoot.
Smallfoot went straight for her notepad to write down what she was going to say. Smallfoot was stuck for a few moments when coming up to think of something. It had to be something simple and something that wasn't going to be suspicious.
Once she wrote down her few notes, she presented it to Sour with the warmest of smiles.
Well I grew up over in the south part of the US, and my father worked with a trucking company. And so after I grew old enough to drive, I thought about doing some trucking jobs for a bit.
Sour Sweet nodded, "Okay but what made you decide to come down here to Canterlot?"
I've been out on the road a whole lot. I wasn't sure where would be a good place for me to settle down. I've traveled from road to road, basically wandering around until I find a place to call home.
"So... you're a wanderer," Sour replied.
Smallfoot gave one nod and a wink. Before Sour could say something else, she paused to hear a song play over the cafe. A smile graced her face. She recognized the exact tune and beat of that song.
"Oh... Oh I love this song! You know The Wanderer?" Sour asked
Smallfoot gave a grin and a thumbs up.
I love this song too!
The two girls bobbed their heads up and down to the beat of the song. The song itself was an oldie from the 1950s, and Sour enjoyed a majority of songs from that time period. The style, the beat, the lyrics, the passion put into the singing, it was an absolute thrill to listen to the song.
"Cause I'm a wanderer, yeah a wanderer...", Sour quietly sang to herself.
Smallfoot was entranced by Sour's singing. Her voice sounded like pure heaven from above, like the sounds angels singing sweet sweet harmonies.
It was at this moment, Sour had the most adorable smile on her face. She was actually having a good time. She looked so at peace with herself. So relaxed, so calm, so happy, so beautiful... and so adorable...
"Hey Big Rig?" Sour asked.
Smallfoot froze in place and shook her head violently to wake herself up. She almost forgot she was gazing off into space.
"You're uh... you're new here, right?" Sour asked.
Smallfoot gave a confirming nod.
"You mind if I... show you around? Like here in the mall, I've got a few favorite spots you might like."
Smallfoot grinned and raised a thumbs up.
"Perfect! After we pay for our shakes, I'll show you around. I know a few spots you'll like. That is if you still want to..."
Smallfoot clutched her sheet of paper and wrote down her response, eliciting a smile from Sour.
I'd love to look around here. And who else to do it with other than a new friend of mine?
Sour just gave another cheery smile. Her sad day was beginning to brighten up a bit. She would have to thank her friends for introducing this girl to her, this girl seemed kind of cool. Even if she was a mute one, she was still looking like a very cool girl.
Back with the rest of the girls, three of the four of them were standing around waiting impatiently as Indigo kept eyeing the different video games within the store. They were getting bored with her really quickly since she wasn't making a decision.
"Indy, dude, come on! Can we just go? I need my milkshake man!"
"Cool it Lemon, I'm just looking one last time!" Indigo huffed.
"That's what you said half an hour ago," Sugarcoat replied.
Sunny sighed, "Well hopefully we can get there soon. I wonder if Sour-- OH MY GOD, she's gone!"
Indigo and the others looked behind and noticed the thing that was amiss. Sour and Smallfoot were gone. They never came with them when they followed behind. Where did they go?
"Well, where did they go?" Lemon asked.
"I don't know, they didn't leave a note!" Sunny said.
"This is why we can't keep an eye on them. Just like with the children I was babysitting, or Sunny's little sister that Indigo was looking after, or even when we lost Lemon's dog," Sugarcoat said.
Lemon's eyes widened and her eyebrows furled, "You lost Raffles!?"
"Only for five minutes. He was apparently getting interested in the pug," Sugarcoat said.
Lemon gritted her teeth, "So I can't even trust you girls to watch over my dog? Poor Raffie..."
"Girls! I think there's a bigger problem right now. Smallfoot is alone with Sour, with no plan, and there's a chance Sour can find her entire plan in a matter of seconds," Sunny said.
"But where would they go?" Indigo asked.
All four of them paused to think. Where could they have gone? There was a movie theater just up the stairs, but there wasn't any way Sour would have gone in to see a movie with a total stranger. The video-game arcade? No, total stranger. Hair salon? No, she liked her hair fine. The only other place she would have interest is...
"The 50s diner," Sugarcoat said, realizing their fault.
All four of them looked at each other with worried looks and dropping jaws.
"CRAP!"
"You see, this is why we can't leave each other alone with girls we just built in a lab." Sugarcoat said shaking her head.
