Chapter 58: Whispers of Darkness

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Landing somewhere in the forest between Golem House and the spa, Shadowfright stretched and slowly morphed his body. Moving his limbs one by one, he formed the basis of a human female form with pale white skin and red eyes, sweeping back her dull silver hair. Sighing, she continued to morph the darkness around her body to make boots, skinny jeans and trench coat all in a sinister pitch black with a white shirt. Flicking her arm out to the side she summoned a stylish black trilby which she placed on her head, before adjusting and making sure her coat fit perfectly.

"Much better, now..." Shadowfright clicked her fingers, glancing back to see five shadowy creatures land near her.

The first to morph is a short fat shadow, turning into the size of a small male with short black hair and blue eyes, forming black boots, cargo pants, waist-length jacket and a white shirt.

"Jerome..." Shadowfright states as they kneel.

The next two to morph were shadowy rabbits, morphing into short females with long white hair and pink eyes. The two girls are identical twins, the only difference being how they form their clothes. Matching black boots and short white shirts, but the first girl's thigh-length jacket and pants are white with black trim, the seconds is black with white trim.

"Gin and Tonic..." Shadowfright sighs as they kneel.

The third is a big shadow wolf which howls before shifting into a tall well-built white male with pink eyes, forming black boots, cargo pants, short jacket, gloves and a white shirt.

"Saber..." The shadow states himself in a fairly deep voice before kneeling.

The final shadow is a bat-like entity who morphs into an elegant skinny white female with white eyes and black shoulder length hair. She slowly forms black knee-length booths, tight-fitting pants, a frilled white shirt and long detailed black coat with gold trim.

"Maestro..." The bat bows at the mention of her name.

"Pleasure to be back, Shadowfright." Maestro states as the group stop kneeling.

Walking forwards, Shadowfright leads them to what appears to another abandoned dorm which has a ghost-like horse creature engraved on the gate, which surrounds the dorm with a short stone wall.

"Ah, Wendigo House, the subject of a much greater tragedy than that of Pegasus House. Built in times of limited budget, housing fifty-two students and one very vengeful spirit. Despite the capabilities of all those in charge at the time, it wasn't noticed fast enough and they all fell down." Shadowfright explains as they enter the dorm.

The lobby feels chilled, the decorations and design based on the element of ice. The chandelier specifically looking like hanging icicles as it dangles above them. The lobby itself is designed much like the Pegasus dorm but without a basement door on the left side, instead, it sits on the right. Taking a deep breath, Shadowfright exhales to see her breath displayed in front of her through the cold. Glancing back at Jerome, he nods before addressing the twins and Saber.

"We'll gather the materials we'll need for the lunar gate." Jerome leaves for the basement with the before mentioned shadows in tow.

"What would you have me do?" Maestro asks, flicking her long coat out for dramatic flair.

"Cleanse this place of any other lingering presence, just in case..." Shadowfright turns around, walking past Maestro towards the exit.

"Another appointment?" Maestro queries as she summons a detailed black violin.

"Something I need to do... Look after things while I am out?" Shadowfright asks, making Maestro nod before she leaves.

The Chancellor sighs as he sips a half-full glass of whisky, looking out at the academy through his balcony window which overlooks the castle courtyard. Glancing up he can see the moon, so bold and bright above everything else as it glows majestically.

"Larry..." The Chancellor states as he takes a sip of his whisky.

Behind him, standing just a short distance from his desk stands Shadowfright. A small mix of emotions struggles to decide which should be displayed on her face.

"It's Shadowfright now, you know this already old man..." Shadowfright states, folding her arms.

"I do, but even an old man can hope." The Chancellor states, moving to sit down in his chair.

Rolling her eyes, Shadowfright simply stands there and stares at the Chancellor intently, not quite sure how to progress.

"How-"

"Mystical relics have their benefits and or curses. The holy grail happened to me." The Chancellor states leaning back.

"Seems legit... You look older than I thought if that's the case." Shadowfright states sitting down on a chair opposite the Chancellor's desk.

"Magic." He replies casually, staring at the strange girl in the chair before him.

The two stare at each other, both now unsure how things should or would progress.

"You put me in a box..." Shadowfright states plainly.

"'She' put you in a box. You realise I had several made for contingancy plans. The special one I made, meant to contain the darkest of elements, disappeared randomly on me." The Chancellor states swinging in his chair slightly.

Raising an eyebrow, Shadowfright looks confused.

"Here I was having this whole thing planned out, strolling into your office all like, 'my name is Lariat Moonsage, you put me in a box, prepare to die'. However, you now have me more curious than vengeful... So, speak." Shadowfright demands crossing her legs with an unamused expression.

"585 BC, height of the Trinity War, Gems, Shadows and Humanity caught in a triad of violence. To secure the alliance of the recently cursed Moon Sages, she sealed the Gems in a heavily enchanted mirror... To gain favour with an ancient power, she sealed you in one of my specially crafted containment cubes. Without a leader, your people grew more confused and violent without any direction, sealing them in the place they worshipped seemed like a mercy." The Chancellor stands up and walks over to stare at the mirror on his wall.

Shadowfright's expression becomes a single twisted vision of repressed rage, blinking slightly as she gripped the arm of the chair.

"She promised us a ruler... One in line with the moon, a lunar kingdom... SHE let me out of the cube I assumed you sealed me inside. SHE made the same promise she did centuries ago, and here you are telling me she played my people like a well-tuned violin! The very mage who advised the kingdom we were at war with, the one who sealed my people in the moon! Why, in the name of the lunar light, would I ever believe what you are telling me?!" Shadowfright stands up and holds out both her hands to summon orbs of swirling darkness.

Finishing his whisky, the Chancellor puts down his glass before taking a deep breath and turning around to face the angry girl, taking several steps towards her.

"Because, if there is one thing I've learned running this academy... Sometimes it's not so simple as sealing your problems away and hoping time sorts them out. No box, no sealing magic, no tricks, just a simple promise." The Chancellor states calmly as he slowly makes Shadowfright lower her magic.

"What could you possibly offer me?" Shadowfright folds her arms and looks away, still very pissed off.

"The very thing my pupil could not deliver. The one and only thing you've been searching for since your tribe was cursed all those years ago..." The Chancellor states, making Shadowfright glance at him curiously.

"You have my attention, for now... Starswirl." Shadowfright sighs deeply.

Author's Notes:

That was extremely difficult to write as I still have no idea what I'm exactly doing with this side of the arc. I've been struggling with this chapter since last week but with any luck now that we have a more solid line to follow we should get back up to speed quickly. That and halfway through the chapter my mind was like, 'what if we did this and explain it like this', my mind is an ass most times but we ran with it. We hope you all still enjoy and continue to support us.
