Chapter 7: Chapter Six - Intelligence

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

It was so cold. The ground, the trees, the mountains. The whole landscape was covered in a thick layer of snow. I could feel the extreme cold against my face. My nose was so numb and my ears had frozen. It was snowing really hard and visibility was pretty low.
“Cobra, S.A.S Delta team is on their way from the south. They’ll arrive at the base in about Twenty Minutes”
“Good, we should get going. We’ve still got to get through the town before we can reach the base”
We were here in Russia, about to move in on the base. The S.A.S were coming in from the south and we were attacking from the north. We had walked a good mile to get here and we still needed to get through this town. Unfortunately it was full of Russians. At least they were not Spetnaz this time but just regular conscripts. Conscripts we’re generally not very well trained, not well equipped or very smart. This mission seemed a whole lot less impossible now. However the number of tanks and choppers in the area cancelled out that little sign of hope.
“Tank! Get down!”
We all got down in the snow as multiple large tanks drove past. We were covered by the snow and tall grass on the side of the road. Many tanks and troops slowly passed.
“Okay, I think we’re clear” Anthony said with quiet confidence.
“All right, lets get moving” I ordered.

We approached the Town. Anthony and Edward were on the other side of the road stacking against the wall of the house. Me, Rainbow, Violet and Ryder where crouched behind some brushes outside another house. More houses spread down the road and a side road on the right about half way down the road with a petrol station at the far side of the junction. A T-90 tank then suddenly drove half way down the street and started scanning the area with it’s main gun.
“Great! If we try to retreat we would get caught, if we try to approach it we would get caught, if we stay here we will eventually get caught” Complained Rainbow. “Now what are we going to do?”
“I say we wait for it to move away...” I suggested. “...It can’t stay there forever.”
“That will take too long...” Argued Ryder. “...I think we should just take them”. He took out his Rocket launcher.
“...Okay, but we have to be at least a little smart about this. Give me a minute to think...” I paused and looked around my environment. I was trying to come up with a good plan. After a while I had something:
“Duke, head inside the house beside us. See if you can get in from the side. Get up to that window and get ready to shoot the tank on my mark. And stay down!”
“Yes sir” his voice so masculine and professional.
“Rainbow, when the rocket destroys the tank need you to fly above and take as many shots as you can at the petrol station. That building over there. Aim for the little boxes with the tubes hanging out. That should take care of the guys over there.”
“You got it!”
“Inferno and Viper, you will take care of the guys that come from the street on the right. Move round back of the house and take position in the house opposite the junction. Me and Violet will take care of anyone coming down the road where the tank is”
Anthony responded, “That house is pretty damn close to the tank but okay, No problem... This better work”

It took everyone about a minute to get into position. Nothing had changed with the Russian tank or troops. They had no idea what was about to happen.
“......Mark” I said calmly.
Suddenly a rocket flew out of the window beside us and hit the tank directly. A massive explosion shook the ground and the tanks main gun flew high up in the air after been blown off. As soon as the rocket hit Rainbow dashed upward and started firing away at the gas station causing it to explode. Many guys getting incinerated by the blast or knocked off their feet by the force of the explosion. Guys started running up from the right street spraying their weapons only to be met with Heavy machine gun fire from Anthony and Edward. More came down the street where the tank was destroyed so I stood up and started firing my Assault rifle at them, taking them down rapidly as they dropped to the floor. I had to reload and the rest took cover by the tanks husk. As I got back up to continue I noticed guys entering the building Anthony and Edward were firing from.
“Viper, Inferno, Tangos entering from the first floor” I warned them talking into the ear piece.
“Shit. Alright we got it”
I continued firing my weapon at the guys by he tank husk. Rainbow had landed beside me to use the bush as cover. The bush had been grown around a brick wall so it provided limited cover from the bullets. Ryder was also firing his Light Machine Gun from the window he had fired the rocket from. As we sprayed bullets I ordered Rainbow and violet to move up with me. We took cover behind a brick wall by the junction.
“Hind!” Yelled Edward down the earpiece.
Hearing this I looked up and saw a hind inbound. It was coming straight for us very fast. As soon a it entered range it fired rockets into Anthony’s and Edward’s vantage point in the house. Bit’s of plaster and brick ware blasted everywhere.
“Ryder! Rockets now!” I shouted.
“I’m already on it” he said calmly.
A rocket flew out of the window again but the Hind dodged it. Straight afterwards it fired a rocket back.
“Aw shit” cursed Ryder into the earpiece.
Boom! The house was hit and it started to collapse. It turned to us and sprayed us with machine gun fire. We got down behind the wall for cover.
“We are so fucked now” I bitched loudly.
Rainbow then looked at me cunningly then jumped up and flew towards the chopper. The chopper fired machine guns and rockets at Rainbow but she strafed side to side to dodge the incoming fire. When she got close she halted and fired her Famas into the pilots window. After a few shots from her rife the helicopter just lost control as it plundered to the ground. She landed by me again looking all smug and full of herself.
“Never fear! Your friendly neighborhood Rainbow Dash is hear!”
I looked at her proudly, giving her a little nod, then turned to talk into my earpiece, “Guys? Are you all okay?”
All of the others were coughing down the Microphones then told me they were fine. When we regrouped they all seemed unscratched. A bit dusty and dirty from the rubble but they were unharmed. I was surprised seeing as they got blown up by missiles. I just accepted that they were alive. We had a mission to complete and reinforcements was bound to show up any moment now.

We approached the base. We were coming down a hill so we got a bit of a view of what was inside the base. A few more T-90’s, Helipads with Hinds and many guards. We were NOT going to fight all that. The best thing to do was sneak into the base. The S.A.S team was about 20 minutes out. They radioed us saying they ran into some complications getting to the base. Of course when we approached the base we found that the fences where electrified.
“Ah shit!” I said. “...Ryder. Get the C4 ready. We‘re gonna have to do this the hard way... Luck just isn’t with us today”
Ryder got out some C4 and planted it very close to the fence.
I turned to the rest of my team, “When this C4 goes off we need to move in straight away for cover. Cover each others backs in there and continue to advance to the main structure. Rainbow, remain grounded while we advance to the building. There are way too many enemies in there for you to dodge their bullets...” I turned my head sideways to look back at Ryder, “...Alright Ryder, blow the charge...”

As soon as the C4 went off we ran in taking cover by some crates. Many Russians saw us and fired back immediately. We returned fire accordingly. All we needed to do was cross the first road, fight our way through a large crate field, cross the second road, run across a large open concrete space while avoiding tank and helicopter fire, run up the large concrete stair well to the structure and fight our way through a building full of baddies to the control room. It sounds stupidly hard and it was actually going to be much harder than it sounded. I was scared for my life but I kept thinking, ‘We have to stop those nukes!’. I didn’t want to do this but I knew I didn’t have a choice.

“Alright ladies! Lets move up” I ordered. We crossed the road under heavy fire but managed to Cross unscathed and took cover by some more creates. We proceeded to fight our way up though the large spread of crates; moving from cover to cover , taking out as many as we could while at the same time trying not to get shot. Two T-90 tanks had taken position on the second road an had started firing their secondary machine gun at us. Most of the Russians in the massive stock of creates had been killed by us and the rest pulled back to the tanks. We were pretty close to the tanks but we were pinned down behind more creates by the tanks secondary weapon.
“Duke, You got any rockets left?” I asked hopefully.
“Of course I do” he said casually.
“...well then.. get on with it!”
Ryder proceeded to reload his rocket launcher and aimed it at the first tank. He fired it and got a direct hit. One down, one to go. However with our luck we had the misfortune of a chopper flying up from behind the tanks, firing machine gun bullets everywhere towards us. Ryder reloaded his rocket and fired at the chopper. Direct hit again and it spiraled out of control crashing into the other helicopters still on the helipads. Despite this success we still had the tank firing at us and Ryder had no more rockets. Luckily I had packed smoke grenades so I threw one over by the tank. After a few seconds the smoke had built up and the tank stopped firing. So did all the soldiers behind the tank. We were still getting shot at from the sides but it was safe enough now to move up to the tank. The smoke still not dispersed I had Anthony climb on top of the tank to chuck in a grenade. When Anthony pulled out a grenade one of the drivers had opened the hatch and grabbed Anthony’s arm. Anthony throwing his other arm to punch the guy but he dodged out the way and counter attacked with a quick punch in the ribs. My focus was drawn away by incoming fire from behind as the smoke dissipated. Russians ran at us from the create field firing a barrage of bullets. Me and the rest of the team took cover by some creates near the tank and returned fire.

A few seconds past and I heard a shot coming from behind. I turned to look and I saw the tank driver holding a pistol to Anthony’s gut.
“Shit! Anthony” I called out.
I turned to point my weapon at the driver but he shot me first. He emptied his clip on me but missing every shot besides one that hit me in the left arm. Anthony then came behind the driver with a knife and slit his throat open. The driver then started gasping for air as blood began to fill his lungs. Anthony then kicked him off the top of the tank before falling off it himself. I jumped up to check on Anthony. I crouched by him and pulled out a medical field kit from my pocket.
“Shit Ant, you alright?” I asked concernedly.
“Yeah, I’m fine! but there’s no time. Give me the kit and get going to the control room”
“What about you?”
“I’ll be fine!...” he said trying to ignore the pain. “...I’ll patch myself up”
“Alright. Edward! Stay with Anthony. When he’s patched up, find a safe place to hold out till we are done in the control room” I got up and gave the hand signal to move up, “...Everyone else we gotta go now! More choppers will show up soon and I don’t want to be out here when they do!”

Me and the rest of the team began to run across the open to the large stair well. There wasn’t much cover but Edward was giving us some cover fire. We reached the stairs and machine gun fire was coming from the structures windows above. We took cover by the concrete wall as I tossed the last of my smoke grenades up. With the cover of the smoke we advanced up the stairs and stacked up at the door. I planted a breach charge on the double doors immediately. I flipped the detonator and the charge blew, stunning everyone on the other side. We moved in gunning down every Russian we saw. We cleared the main entrance hall of Russians and Violet the searched a couple of the bodies. She found a mini-computer on one of them.
“Give me a sec to hack this. I can find out were the control room is, or computer lab or whatever”
She tapped a few buttons on the touch screen computer. She worked for a few seconds tapping away at the computer screen. She stuck her tongue out like she was trying hard to focus.
“Right! Got it!...” she blurted out. “...control room is this way”
“Lets get going!”

After intense fighting through the corridors of the base we reached the control room. We moved in quickly and took cover. The room was empty. Offices could be seen either side, elevated above the rest of the room only accessible by metal stairs along the side. Many computers around the room and a main view screen in the middle of the back wall.
“Get to it Violet”
“On it. I'm going to need some time. A LOT of time”
“Alright! Get claymores set up in the corridors leading to this room, Take up a defensive position around the door and defend this room!” I turned to Rainbow, “...stay in here with Violet in case they decide to come through the windows”

I went out into the corridor to see how Ryder doing with the claymores. He had planted a series of claymores down all three corridors, hiding them behind boxes, barrels and the archways. I moved a few barrels near the door to make some cover. If the Russians showed up we would need more than just claymores to protect us.
“Alright. That’s all the claymores used up”
“Alright then.... get ready...” My voice lowered as I entered a state of concentration, waiting for the Russians to show up. Ryder watched down the left corridor and I watched down the right. The middle one had the most claymores so we didn’t focus on it to much but I did occasionally give it a quick scan.
“Here they come!” Yelled Ryder “...My side!”
“...and mine!”
Russians started taking cover and firing at us from both corridors. As they tried to move up they were met with explosions from the claymores. Me and Ryder both firing away holding the door, the barrels providing sufficient cover. More explosions from the middle corridor. Russians were now coming from every direction. Very quickly the claymores began to dwindle as more and more went off. The Russians getting closer now, me and Ryder were finding it difficult to fire back.
“Violet? Talk to me!” I yelled with concern down my earpiece.
“Almost there! Just one more Firewall to crack!” she said, not appreciating the extra pressure.
“Fuck it! Ryder inside now and seal the door with the torch!”
Me and Ryder went back into the control room and Ryder proceeded to seal the door shut with the torch. It wouldn’t take them long to brake through but it would buy us some time.
“Courage.... You might want to come see this...”
“What is it Violet?” I turned to everyone else, “...get ready for when they brake through.” I then walked to the work area where Violet was.
“Check it out....”
“The air codes... and... oh shit...”
“Thirty minutes till they launch they first Nuclear strike...”
“Upload the virus... We need to take these codes from them now!”
“The plane will most likely....”
I cut her off quickly, “...Yes I know, the plane will have it’s own copy of course. Otherwise it wouldn’t be able to pass the defences... We gotta stop that plane. Where is it?”
“Airbase... 8 miles east... We have less than thirty minutes to stop that plane....”
