Harmony's Defeat
Chapter 6: Chapter Five - Preparation
Previous Chapter Next Chapter“...Thanks John, I'm here at the scene of a Russian Spetnaz attack on London. As you can see it’s absolute chaos here. Witnesses told the police that multiple vehicles had a road rage down these streets before the Helicopter tore through an entire street and collapsed this bridge behind me with a load of Rockets. The bodies of Russian Spetnaz were recovered from the wreaked cars on the other side of the bridge. Witnesses also reported Russian Spetnaz leaving this scene here in Black trucks. The Helicopter also fled the scene moments after the carnage ended. Evidence shows that these Russian soldiers were here for a small group of people. These people had been the one’s they had chased down the road.”
“Do the Police know where the Russians went? or how they got into the country?”
“...the police say that the Russian spetnaz can easily get in and out of the country. With military resources there isn’t much the Police can do to keep them out.”
“Okay well thank you Sophie for that report. In a related story the Minister of National defence gave a statement about the incident today and what he plans to do to avoid this kind of thing happening again. On screen please”
“...I have reviewed the case and I assure you that the ‘Ministry of National Defence’ is doing it’s very best to track these Spetnaz soldiers and we have also alerted all border patrol posts to keep their guard up. We only want to keep our country and it’s people safe from further Russian attack...”
“That footage was taken today at the National briefing of....”
After a while my brain tuned out from the news report. I was back at the base waiting for Rainbow to recover from her wounds. I was not in the best state myself but I was more worried about Rainbow dash. The clock on the wall of the Med Lab was reading 8:43am. Rainbow was lying on the medical bed. Our medical officer Isabelle (the new addition to the team) had trouble healing her since Rainbow was a Pony and not a human. That and Isabelle was fresh out of Uni and Rainbow and I were her first real patients. I hired her because she was enthusiastic, Open minded and passed her University course with an 100% pass score. Which was good because I needed a young medical officer to patch us up after a mission. She has only been here a week and I have given her the option of who to pick for the full medical team. She was also my first hired staff member for my base. I figured with the french funding I could easily start up a proper base of operations.
Rainbow Dash began to wake up. She didn’t seem to be in too much pain and her wounds were healing nicely.
“Where am I?” she asked.
“It’s Okay Dash, you’re in the Med Lab back at base.”
“What... what happened?” She was a little overwhelmed.
“You passed out in the car. You’re lucky to be alive. You lost a lot of blood back there”
“Oh, well it’s good to be alive. So how long will I be here? She asked curiously.
“Well it’ll be a few days yet, but you’ll be out in a few days and we can start on your weapons training” I told her reassuringly. “In the mean time I'm going to go read contents of the envelope Gavriil gave me... Isabelle, keep me updated on Rainbow's health. I’ll be in the computer lab”
“Of course sir” Isabelle replied.
----------
In the computer lab I had opened the envelope that Gavriil gave me. It was just a printed web address, user name and password with hand writing on the side saying “This is everything you will need Comrade. Good luck and good hunting”. I went over to the table computer, thinking that it needed a cooler name, and I dialed up the web address. The address was just lots of letters and numbers so it wasn’t even a real web address. To my surprise, when I dialed up the web address, it came up with ‘Russian Secret Intelligence Organisation’. After logging in with the User and password it came up with a location of a secret Information outpost. I guessed that the information I wanted would be found here: I remembered Gavriil saying “I don’t have any information about the codes or the nukes but I know where might be able to find it” back at the parking lot.
“Sweet Celestia! I actually have something. I better prep the team. There’s no time to lose!”
I turned on my ear piece and spoke into it “Violet, Assemble the team at the computer lab. I think I have something”
----------
“Welcome everyone. Since the last briefing Violet came up with nothing. Luckily our dear friend Gavriil gave me a lead for us to follow up on... and a strong lead may I add. A Russian intelligence base, as you can see on the main screen, it is found here in East Russia. From what I can guess it is a hub of Russian Intelligence on UN and homeland operations. I'm hoping that it will also have information on this Nuclear operation of theirs. It’s simple: We break in, get to the control room, hack their systems, steal all their data, upload a virus to screw them over and we get out. I would give a more detailed plan but in all honesty I have no information on the actual fortifications of this base. So we’ll be going for stealth but we’ll also pack heavy to be prepared for anything that might be waiting for us. Also dress warm and for arctic conditions. It’s cold in Russia this time of year. Liam will drop us off a few clicks north of the base and we’ll have to improvise from there. Any questions?”
“...you mean to say we are going in completely unaware of what might be defending this base to possibly... POSSIBLY find some information on the nukes... I'm sorry but isn’t that risking it a little to much” said Violet with a huge notion of concern
“As I said, it will HOPEFULLY contain information on the nukes and codes but even if I'm wrong we can still completely destroy their battle net with a virus”
“What if the computer has security to protect itself from the virus?” asked Edward.
“Well that's why we’ll have Violet there to make sure the Virus is uploaded successfully. It will be transferred physically by flash drive. Violet will just need to hack the Passwords and Security software so the virus can proceed to wipe the whole system clean. However she will need time so we’ll need to cover her while she works. This will be our toughest mission yet so I have requested that the S.A.S work with us on this. They don’t know we are doing this for the nukes, they think this is purely an attack on Russian Intelligence. So keep quiet about the nukes until we get back to base... now I want everyone geared up and ready to go in Forty-eight hours”
I spent the next seven hours checking that all our equipment was working properly. I didn’t want anything going wrong on this mission, making sure all guns were clean, all mags were loaded and all equipment was functioning. I was still in the armoury when Rainbow came to see me. She looked quite healthy, she still had the Bandages around her body though. I was surprised she was even walking.
“Hay, I heard about the mission tomorrow”
“If you’re asking if you can come then the answer is yes”
“...but you said...Wait. What?” She looked surprised.
I stopped what I was doing and looked at her, “Firstly, I promised to train you before the next mission. A promise is a promise and I don’t make promises if I know I can’t keep ‘em. Secondly, your ability to fly will most likely prove very useful to us”
“Really? That's great! I can finally do some thing useful! Thank you Courage!”
“Your welcome Dashie. To be honest I think we’re going to need you for this one”
“Awwww yeah!!” She cheered. “So what’s first?”
“Well first we gotta design a weapon for you. We don’t have time to make you a proper gun so we’ll make a quick something just for this mission.... hmm... I know! Come with me Dash.”
I picked up a Famas from the table and walked out the armoury with Dash.
In the workshop I laid the Famas down on the workbench. Rainbow watched as I started to work on it. I took the blow touch and cut off the trigger guard. “The Famas’s clip is behind the trigger so if I cut off the trigger guard you could quite easily pull the trigger with your hoof”
I then took a strap and lined it up to the hand guard.
“Put your hoof here” I instructed.
I tightly wrapped the strap around her hoof and took measurements. I then cut the strap to be short enough to wrap tightly around her hoof and attach securely to the hand guard.
“This will allow you to hold your gun more tightly. I'm sure it would be quite difficult to hold it with your hoof without the strap”
“Okay, now I can hold and Fire the weapon. What about reloading?” she asked
I paused to think of something but I couldn’t think of a short term solution.
“You can use your teeth for now. I’ll be sure to make your outfit with easy to access pockets for your ammo”
“Okay then”, She sounded a bit concerned.
“One last thing...” I grabbed another strap and attached each end to either side of the Handle. “This will allow you to walk on all four hooves while you carry it on your back. Me and my team use little clips to attach our weapons to our body armour but of course you don’t have fingers so you’ll have a strap instead”
She picked up her new weapon and inspected it. “I can live with this for now. Just teach me how to use it properly”
“Sure. Lets make our way to the armoury and I can teach you to shoot things in the firing range”
We were back in the armoury now. I had her standing in one of the firing booths. I was laying out fresh magazines for her to reload with. A few targets were set up at the end of the range and she was itching to get started. Up on her two back hooves she was aiming down the range.
“Short steady bursts...” I told her. “...Controlled periodic bursts allows for greater accuracy. You should also always stand firm. The kick back can be quite intense so it’s impotent that you’re ready for it”
“Alright, I got it. I'm ready” she stated.
“Alright then. Take down the targets in front of you” I ordered.
She opened fire on the targets. Each target going down one by one. She was using short steady bursts and only went through one clip to take all five down. She missed a few shots but for a first timer she did great. A little more practice and she’d be ready. I told her this much. After many hours of training she had became very good at aiming straight and reloading with her mouth. I was amazed at her progress.
Rainbow walked away and sat down on the bench in the armoury, laying her weapon down next to her. She looked a bit glum now, brushing her hoof on the bench. She gave a quiet sigh and looked at the floor. I turn to look at her.
“What’s wrong Rainbow?” I asked gently.
“In a few hours, I’m going to be using this to kill...” She put her hoof on her weapon. “...I'm not sure about taking another life.” She said shamefully.
“Second thoughts eh? Well if you don’t want to do it Dash then I won’t force you. Just remember you could be helping us a lot. You could be helping us save many more lives than you’ll be taking. Millions of lives are depending on us stopping these Russian nukes”
She looked at me, unsure of herself. I continued to talk.
“...Think of it like this: Every person you kill would have been killed by me and the team anyway. You’ll just be there to help us kill them faster”
“That doesn’t make me feel much better”
“Well I’m not forcing you to do this but I really could use your help with this. I’ll let you think about it okay? I’ve got to go see Violet. I really hope you make the right choice”
I walked out of the armoury to give her time to think.
I went to the computer lab to talk to Violet. She was installing some new software to our computer network that would make transfer speed between computers faster by using more efficient ports to communicate with. I wasn’t even bothered about that. I needed to know the status of the Virus.
“Is the virus ready Violet?”
She brushed her bright purple hair behind her ears and swiveled her chair round to face me. She then held up a Flash drive and said, “It’s right here for you. They won’t know what hit them”
I nodded my head, “Good, that's good”
We were both silent for a moment the I proceeded to start interfacing with then table computer. Doing this sparked a thought in my brain. I instantly said this thought out load, “We need to give this table computer a cooler name. Table computer sounds a bit... dry”
She looked at me in deep thought then said, “T.C”
“Huh?”
“T.C! Table computer... T.C sounds pretty cool and it’s an abbreviation of Table Computer”
“Okay...” I said in agreement. “...T.C it is then”
She stood up and walked to me slowly. Then she started talking in a quiet tone, “I'm not sure about this mission. It’s a bit risky don’t you think”
“Well do we have any other leads? No I think not.... We need this information. The whole of France is at risk. They could have already launched the plane by now. We got to act quick before they start their plan... IF they haven't already started it”
“Alright!....” She said with a sigh, “...You’re right, We clearly don’t have a choice”
“Anyway, we should get going...” I suggested. “...Mission starts in half and hour”
Thirty Minutes later we we’re getting aboard the chopper. We had all geared up heavily: Mines, Rocket launchers, claymores, breach charges, smoke grenades, flash grenades and stupid amounts of ammo.
“Where’s Rainbow?” asked Violet.
“I guess she changed her mind” I said in disappointment.
I was just climbing on the chopper ready to go. I was quite saddened that Rainbow wasn’t coming.
“Okay Liam, your clear to go!”
Just as we lifted off I proceeded to shut the choppers side door. Just before I could shut it Rainbow’s hoof came through the gap...
“Wait! I’m coming too” She said with a glare. She was armed fully: Body armour that I specially made for her, ammo and her Famas on her back. “Like you said, my ability to fly will come in handy”
I grabbed her hoof and pulled her on board, smiling at her.
“I'm glad you changed your mind”
