Chapter 51: King Void and the Dark Yo-kai

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Twilight and her friends, along with Queen Ephemer, Nurarihyon, Inumaro, and Nekokiyo all stood silently in the throne room, ruminating on all of the events that had happened. After all the battles that they had fought, the aftermath gave them some time to think; to strategise on how to defeat the tyrant king and save the worlds.

"Queen Ephemer, if I may." Twilight broke out of her train of thought and approached the Yo-kai queen. "Who is this King Void? I mean, I know that we've seen his face and all, but other than that, we hardly know anything about him. Do you think you could explain?"

"Well, there's no harm in telling you now, especially after his ruthless attacks on your world with his Dark Yo-kai." Queen Ephemer nodded her head and enticed Twilight to come closer by coiling her fingers. "It all started just recently. Like, around five months after Dame Dedtime was killed off."

"Following the fall of the tyrant dame, there were reports of black Yo-kai prowling on the plains. Being Yo-kai ourselves, we decided to investigate; to see whether or not we could welcome them into our world with open and loving arms." Nurarihyon approached Twilight and Ephemer, holding his staff by his waist. "When we got close to them, they seemed quite normal. A little twitchy, yes, but not entirely harmless at first glance."

"However, when the Yo-kai began attacking our peaceful delegates, we were immediately taken aback with their violent and aggressive natures." Queen Ephemer shuddered as she told the group the tale. "Soulless creatures, devoid of any real emotions, bent on attacking, destruction, and death. They were far worse than the Wicked Yo-kai could ever have hoped to be. Many others called them monsters, but soon, we declared them as the Dark Yo-kai." She looked out towards the front door, hearing the screams of many Yo-kai ringing in her ears as her mind flashed back to the events she was describing. "Like wild animals, these beasts were spurred on by their master; ordered to pillage, terrorise, and attack anything in their path."

"Listen, Twilight, knowing that you're a pacifistic race, I am going to lay this harsh truth onto you right now." Nurarihyon walked up to Twilight and knelt before her. "Dark Yo-kai cannot be befriended. You cannot get their Yo-kai Medals, try to reform them, or even make them doubt you for a second. They are mindless puppets, dancing on King Void's strings. Whatever you might try to say or do to redeem them is entirely futile, no matter how much you think you can succeed."

"Not like we'd even try to make friends with them anyway." Whisper blew the small tuft of fuzz on the top of his head. "They've turned Red Snow's Sailornyan into Oblivinyan, so it's safe to say that they're an affront to any and all Yo-kai."

"Nyeah! Those bullies shouldn't even be around here at all!" Jibanyan nodded and scurried up to Twilight and Whisper. "Together, we're gonna pound them into the dirt for making them hurt our friends!"

"Wait, what did you say, little marshmallow?" Inumaro waddled up to Whisper and pricked up his ears. "What was that about a Sailornyan becoming something known as Oblivinyan?"

"First of all, the name is Whisper, Inumaro. W-H-I-S-P-E-R, in case you don't know how to spell." Whisper's neck snapped towards Inumaro as his eyebrows twitched momentarily. "And secondly, yes, it's true. The Time Witches, Kin and Gin, they said some weird hocus-pocus chant and latched these weird black spikes onto Sailornyan's body. Next thing we knew, she was ripped from our world and spat back into it as a Dark Yo-kai."

"Of all the heinous crimes those two have committed, this just seems like another one to add to their list." Nurarihyon snarled as his grip on the skull staff tightened. "Inumaro, Nekokiyo. Inform the inhabitants of the Yo-kai World that the bounty on Kin and Gin's heads now stands at twenty-five million Y-Money for whoever can kill them off for good."

"Yes, Lord Nurarihyon!" Both of the Yo-kai ran out of the throne room, pushing through the massive double doors as they left his sight.

"I take it that you really don't like Kin and Gin, Nurarihyon." Rarity waltzed up to the grey Yo-kai and looked him in the eyes. "Do you think that you can inform us about the Time Witches, so that we're better equipped to deal with them?"

"Kin and Gin have the power to freely manipulate the time stream for their own heinous purposes, making minor or major changes as they please." Nurarihyon looked over to Rarity and stared back at her. "Imagine a world where the dinosaurs didn't die after the meteor hit, or a world where the most evil of tyrannical dictators won, even when the heroes used all of their power to fight back. Those are the worlds that Kin and Gin create; worlds of darkness and despair where the only law is theirs."

"Their power also allows them to freely control the time stream of any battle. They can revive each other, reverse any and all wounds inflicted on them, and even trap you in an infinite time loop if they're not dealt with." Queen Ephemer's own hand clenched into a fist as she gnashed her teeth together. "Not only is their power ludicrous, but it quite frankly sickens me. I might be a merciful and peaceful queen, but that won't stop me from erasing those two outlaws from the face of existence!"

"And now we know that they have the ability to turn any Yo-kai into Dark Yo-kai..." Whisper scratched his chin and inhaled air through two small holes that appeared on his face before exhaling through his mouth. "But why would they run to King Void? It's not like them to just blindly obey him, right? Kin and Gin wouldn't throw themselves to a Yo-kai beyond redemption and beg to join him, right?"

"You forget who you are talking about, Whisper." Queen Ephemer shook her head and approached Whisper. "Kin and Gin were responsible for altering the timeline on your last master heavily, erasing his memories of the Yo-kai completely and almost throwing the entire world into chaos. If you see them. Kill them and make sure that they don't come back to the Yo-kai World. That's an order."

"One that I'll be happy to fulfil." Whisper cracked his knuckles and began to punch the air. "Those old hags are nothing more than a blight on this world."

"But then what, Whisper?" Fluttershy flapped her wings and hovered lightly off the ground. "After we beat Kin and Gin, we've gotta focus on King Void, and he seems like the nastiest thing I've ever seen. Why, he makes everything else—even Nightmare Night—not scary at all!"

"Speaking of which, you were meant to tell us about him, weren't you?" Pinkie Pie cartwheeled up to Queen Ephemer and made her recoil with how close she got to her. "Or were you going to save it to the end and give us a spooky warning message before we go back to Ponyville?"

"King Void is unlike anything you girls have ever seen before." Queen Ephemer picked Pinkie Pie up and sat her down on the carpet leading towards the throne. "A being of pure darkness, untouchable by anything mortal. Your power; this Magic of Friendship you have, it will not hurt him at all. Only Yo-kai can kill the king, let alone wound him."

"But I believe that you are due for an explanation," said Nurarihyon. rubbing his staff with his other hand. "About the enemy that you and your friends will have to fight, and all that he is sending your way." He twirled it around in his hand and banged the ground with it, causing a dark purple circle to appear in front of him. A column of Yo-kai energy burst out of the circle, revealing a holographic projection of King Void. "King Void preys on the darkness within one's heart and tries to extract it at every given turn. You mentioned before that he has been trying to steal a being called Midnight Sparkle from you, am I correct?"

"Yes, and while Lash and Maelstro did make me lose my mind, King Void could never fully take her for his own on both accounts." Twilight's body grew cold as she envisioned the damage that she had done to the world and ponies around her when Midnight took control of her. "But, why, though? Why is it that he failed to take her from me?"

"King Void's darkness-stealing powers are quite strong, yes, but they can be stalled by strong-willed beings such as yourself." Nurarihyon caused more images to appear, showing King Void hold his claw up to his face, ripping out purple mist from a regular Yo-kai, while leaving the holographic Twilight wincing and reeling. "He can make Dark Yo-kai form from the hearts of the Yo-kai that he battles without a fight, but he has never had to face a mortal being yet. It might be the fact that you bear the Yo-kai Watch, but the point is still there nonetheless: You are stronger than him. But do not let down your guard." With another wave of his hands, it showed Midnight bursting out of Twilight's chest and combining her dark power with King Void's to vaporise the holograms. "If you give him a small window of opportunity, he WILL take it and form Midnight Sparkle to serve by his side."

"So, what do we do about it?" Twilight asked, pushing by the remaining specks of light as the circle and pillar of energy disappeared. "How do we stop King Void when he has those kind of powers? How do we fight a demon king with strength beyond compare?"

"You need some time to gather your strength." Queen Ephemer gave Twilight a gentle tap on her heart, causing a small ripple of rainbow light to appear and swoop all around her body. "The Yo-kai you've befriended are amplifying your powers by a small margin, but once you collect more, your Magic of Friendship might have a chance of piercing through the king's darkness. Might."

"So, I guess we just keep making friends with more Yo-kai?" Applejack stepped forward and looked at Twilight's Yo-kai Watch.

"Shouldn't be a problem." Rainbow Dash flicked the hair on her forehead upwards and swam through the air. "Twilight's the Princess of Friendship. I'm sure that she can make Yo-kai friends in no time at all."

"And no matter which new Yo-kai that you meet, always remember that I'm right here by your side, ready to help you out if things get hectic." Whisper swooped down to Twilight's shoulders and rested himself on her back. "Consider it my butler's code of conduct, if you will. I am never to leave your side, even if you find me annoying, a bother, a hinderance, thorn in the back, stone in the shoe, or—"

"We get it, Whisper." JIbanyan stuffed his paw into Whisper's mouth, silencing him instantly. "Don't worry about him, Twilight. He can be talkative as a Babblong sometimes..."

"Your bonds with the Yo-kai might not seem like much at first, Twilight, but as long as you keep on gathering allies and obtaining their Yo-kai Medals, I have the utmost confidence that you will be able to stand up to King Void and knock him off of his throne once and for all." Queen Ephemer cracked a smile as she looked at Twilight and her friends standing by her side. "The only thing that I can do now is send you all home, so that you can prepare yourselves for the oncoming war." She waved her hands in a circular motion, causing a portal to appear by her feet. "Take this portal back to Equestria. Find any Yo-kai that cause mischief and recruit them to your side as soon as you can. Your strong heart and tight bonds will guide you, just as Whisper and Jibanyan have already."

"I wish you all luck. You're going to need it." Nurarihyon turned and walked away from the group of ponies. "We shall meet again, Princess Twilight Sparkle and friends. Maybe once you prove yourselves to me against King Void, I may just hand over my own Yo-kai Medal."

"I just have one last question before we go, Queen Ephemer." Twilight walked up to the swirling portal and glanced at the queen once more. "How will we know when we're ready to face King Void?"

"I cannot tell you exactly when you are ready, Princess Twilight." Ephemer shook her head as she walked back towards the throne and sat down upon the seat. "Your heart will tell you in due time. Once you have gathered enough Yo-kai, you will feel strong enough to where you will be able to confidently go into battle against him. Good luck."

Twilight nodded at Queen Ephemer and looked down at the portal, trying not to damage her eyes with how bright and vibrant the vortex of light was. She took a quick look at all of her friends and smiled, giving them a nod as she took in a deep breath. Closing her eyes, she turned her back to the portal and fell backwards through it with the rest of her friends, tumbling through the massive amount of bright lights and besieging colours that assaulted the eyes of her and her disciples.

"My heart will tell me when I'm ready?" Twilight asked herself as she continued to plunge through the lights. "What does that mean? When will I have enough Yo-kai friends to face him? Am I really the one to put an end to this menace?" As she fell into a massive burst of white light, she closed her eyes as she re-entered Equestria, falling towards Ponyville. "I guess only time will tell..."
