Chapter 50: I'm so Cornfused!/Living in Perfect Harmory

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Back on Earth, Sunset Shimmer was sitting in class with her Yo-kai Watch tied tightly around her wrist. She opened up a large notebook and pulled out a pen from her pencil case. All that she had to do now was wait for the teacher to arrive and deliver her and the class their lessons.

"Y'know, there hasn't been any Yo-kai activity lately." Pinkie Pie leaned over from her desk while her eyes remained fixated on the blackboard. "What do you think they're up to, Sunset?"

"Huh, what?" Sunset's mind was pried from the board and she turned to face Pinkie. "Oh. I don't really know. Maybe they're just waiting for the perfect moment to strike. And because this is a high school, I can just bet that Yo-kai would be teeming here..."

"Well, whatever happens, I'm sure that you and Twilight got this." Pinkie Pie shot a grin at Sunset and sat with her back straight against her chair again. "Besides, you've dealt with this freaky-deaky stuff all the time. Shouldn't be a problem to stop a troublemaking Yo-kai."

"Yeah. I hope so." Sunset squinted her eyes again and looked dead centre at the blackboard as the bell rang, signalling the beginning of class.

All of a sudden, a woman with purple skin and pink hair walked into the classroom. She was carrying a clipboard underneath her arm and wore a yellow dress with a checkerboard pattern and black business shoes. She opened a drawer and slid the clipboard into it before she stood before the students firmly.

"Good morning, students," she said, keeping a grin plastered onto her face. "Now, I hope that you've all been crunching numbers in your free periods because today we're looking at the principles of ratio." She took a piece of white chalk and wrote the lesson down in large print.

While some small groans resounded from the back of the room, everyone else pulled out their writing utensils and laid them out, watching the woman proceed to jot down some numbers on the board.

"Now then. Ratio is one of the hardest subjects in math so I hope that you're all listening very carefully," she began. "There are two different types of ratio to be taken into account. The first one, which we'll be looking at today is single unit ratio."

Everyone watched the woman write down all of the proper methods of calculating ratio while looking down at their notepads whenever a question came up. Some of them simply wrote down their answers while others lightly fidgeted and began to sweat.

As Cheerilee continued to teach her class, a bipedal cob of corn with a face walked into the room and turned its' head towards the students. It didn't have many expressions and simply gawked at them as it waddled towards the teacher's chair. Reaching out for the seat, it jumped up and climbed onto it, before working its' way up towards the desk.

"Wh-where am I?" The corn asked, looking around the room. "What's going on? Who are these people? What are they even doing here?" As it pondered those questions, it let off a small cloud of purple smoke that drifted around Miss Cheerilee and cast a purple inspiriting flame on her.

"Wait, what?" Cheerilee dropped her arm and cocked a brow at her class. It was as if everything that she had been so attentive of had been lost entirely. She blinked rapidly a few times as if she was trying to recall what she was doing, but nothing came to her mind. "Who are you?"

"Huh?" Sunset's eyes moved from her book to face Cheerilee. She saw her simply stare around the room and look thunderstruck as her amnesia continued to flaunt itself on full display. "Miss Cheerilee? Are you alright? Do you need a drink or something?"

"A... drink?" Cheerilee looked around and placed her fingers on the desk, scanning the room as attentively as she could. "What's a drink, miss, uh... who are you again?"

Something's wrong. Sunset stroked her Yo-kai Watch as she continued to watch Miss Cheerilee question everything around her. There must be a Yo-kai inspiriting her. Of all the times one had to show up, it had to be in class... She reached into the bag and pulled out a medal, placing it in front of her. First things first, we'd better see what we're dealing with.

As Sunset scanned around the room for the Yo-kai inspiriting Miss Cheerilee, her eyes shot wide open when she realised that the culprit couldn't be seen—even though the light was pointed directly at it. It failed to show up, and Sunset bit her lip as some blobs of sweat began to appear on her forehead. With another quick shake of the watch's light, her efforts to find the Yo-kai were entirely futile.

"Who's there?" Sunset asked, standing up from her table and walking over towards Miss Cheerilee. "I know you're in here, causing Miss Cheerilee this amnesia. Show yourself, Yo-kai." She had the light pointed directly at it once again. "Don't worry. I'm not going to hurt you. I just want to talk if that's alright."

As Sunset laid her hand on the Yo-kai, she suddenly began to glow a bright shade of golden. The light danced around her body and caused the pupils of her eyes to shine a feint shade of purple for a few seconds as she saw something begin to materialise before her. She didn't speak, as her jaw was held wide open from what she was witnessing.

"H-how?" The corn asked as it appeared before Sunset. It gave a few shakes of the head and looked around the room once again. "Who are you? How can you see me? I'm a Yo-kai."

"I know that." Sunset held up her Yo-kai Watch and pointed the multi-coloured sigil inside the dome towards the corn cob. "Listen. My name is Sunset Shimmer. I'm a bearer of the Yo-kai Watch. Now, do you think you could tell me who you are and what you do?"

"W-well, I guess I could..." It said, brushing the tip of its' feet on the desk. "My name is Cornfused. That much I do know. And everywhere I go, I always seem to confuse others just as much as I do myself."

"Cornfused, eh?" Sunset raised her brow at the Yo-kai and cocked her head. "Well, you certainly live up to your name, little guy. I still don't know how you managed to avoid the light my Yo-kai Watch projected, but I'd still like to be friends if that's alright with you."

"Oh, you can't see American Yo-kai with a standard issue Yo-kai Watch." Cornfused waddled over to Sunset's Yo-kai Watch and gave it a small tap with the back of its' hand. "Japanese Yo-kai and American Yo-kai are two entirely different things altogether. You need a Yo-kai Watch U to see us."

"Yo-kai Watch U? American Yo-kai? I'm afraid that I don't really follow." Sunset blinked twice.

"It's like the Yo-kai Watch, but the 'U' part stands for universal." Cornfused shied away from Sunset. "That way, you can see Yo-kai from all across the planet, and not just the standard ones you're used to."

"Oh. Here." Cornfused reached into its' head and pulled out a golden Yo-kai Watch with a brighter tint around the dome that draped down the sides. "This is the Yo-kai Watch U. If you have this, it allows you to see us American Yo-kai. I tried to use it myself, but I don't know how to. I'm just as confused as you are right now."

"It looks just like the original Yo-kai Watch, doesn't it?" Sunset inspected the watch, looking at each different part. As she compared it to the one she was already wearing, she saw a number of glaring similarities to the original model. "Are you sure that you're not lying to me, Cornfused?"

"I don't even know how to lie!" Cornfused waved its' hands frantically in front of itself. "L-look, why don't I just give you this and get out of your hair, alright?" It pulled out a Yo-kai Medal and tossed it to Sunset before jumping down off of the desk. "Sorry for being a bother." And with that, it stumbled off out of the room.

Sunset grabbed the Yo-kai Medal and examined it from all sides. It had the same distinguishable features as an ordinary Yo-kai Medal, but the ring around it was a bright shade of ruby instead of silver. As she tilted it around, she unintentionally reflected the light off of Cheerilee's eyes, causing the inspiriting flames around her to disappear.

"A Yo-kai Watch U..." Sunset could only stare at the new device as she took her seat once again. As she double-checked each angle for something different, she saw some words that only lightly popped out of the plastic casing. "What's this? Created by Mark Shachiberg, President of Yopple Inc.? Who's that?"

"Oh... my head." Cheerilee rubbed her forehead as she re-oriented herself. When she finally came to, she saw that the entire class had been looking at her as if they had all seen something out of the ordinary. "Oh my. How long was I out? Does anyone remember what we were learning about? Because I can't seem to recall a thing..."

"We were talking about ratios in math before you blacked out, Miss Cheerilee." Sunset slipped the new Yo-kai Watch U into her bag and put it down by her side before returning her gaze to Cheerilee. "You must've been fatigued by how hot it is in here. Might wanna try drinking some more water, just to be safe."

"Was I?" Cheerilee turned around to the board and saw all of the equations that she had wrote down before Cornfused had inspirited her. "Oh. I guess I was. Well then, it's no harm done then. Thank you, Sunset."

"You're welcome." She said, readying her pen and pencil for the next set of questions. But as she bolstered herself, all that her mind could think about now was the American Yo-kai, Mark Shachiberg, and whether or not Cornfused was telling the truth.

"Well, class, if there's nothing else to discuss, then let's get back to the lesson." Cheerilee turned back to the board and brushed the equations off with her chalk before proceeding to put down some new ones. "Now then, the second kind of ratio is comparing how much of one item you have in comparison to the other."

"I'm telling ya, it was the weirdest thing I've ever seen in my life!" Rainbow Dash was sitting on the bleachers with the rest of the Rainbooms as they waited for their turn to run a makeshift obstacle course composed of different hurdles, pits, and rope swings. "I'm not sure whether or not it's new for them, but those two girls have been doing everything at the exact same time all day and it's kinda been bugging me out."

"Which two girls, Rainbow Dash?" Sunset asked, prying her attention away from the course. "It's no good to just give us names without any proper explanation."

"Y'mean you haven't seen it yet, Sunset?" Applejack pointed her fingers over to two girls over on the other side of the bleachers. They were both wearing expensive clothing while browsing through the messages on their phones. "Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon. Two girls who are rich beyond their wildest dreams. They usually hang out every day o' the week, but just recently, they started to do everything in perfect sync with each other. It's like they're trying to mirror each other's movements or something..."

"Well, I'm sure that it's nothing, Applejack. Best friends do tend to do things together." Sunset shrugged as she turned her gaze towards Diamond and Silver. "If those two are friends to each other, then it's only natural that they'd do this kinda stuff."

"No, Sunset, it's not just that." Rainbow Dash put her elbow on her knees and toppled her hand. "When I said that they did everything together, I LITERALLY MEANT IT. Today, they've been breathing together, talking at the same time as each other, ordering the same food, and even posted the same blog about the same thing with the EXACT. SAME. WORDS."

"Oookay?" Sunset couldn't pinpoint exactly what Rainbow meant.

"They're basically turning into those two freaky siamese twins from that horror movie we watched recently." Pinkie Pie took over, bouncing in front of Rainbow Dash. "Soon, they're going to be saying stuff like 'Ooooohhh... Come play with us... We want to be your friends... Give us cookies and cake...'" She wiggled her fingers as she attempted to imitate a ghost.

"Pinkie, Pinkie, Pinkie, I'm sure that it's not that bad." Sunset stood up from the bleachers and turned to face Diamond and Silver. "I'm going to talk to them and see if I can find out why they're doing this. Nothing to worry about."

Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon both propped up their legs and crossed them, pressing the outsoles against each other as they flipped through the same websites on their phones. They both inhaled and exhaled the same amount of air and pressed their thumbs against the centre of their eyes as they continued to browse the internet.

"Uh, excuse me? Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon was it?" Sunset Shimmer walked up to the girls, causing them to turn their heads towards her. "Hi. My friends were getting a little concerned about how you two were acting today. Do you think you could explain to me what's going on?"

"What is there to explain?" They both said at the same time, putting their phones away. "We're just doing what we always do. We were born together, live together, we even eat together. It's been going on since the day we were born."

"Alright, I can buy everything you've said, but you both being born on the same day just doesn't feel right." Sunset looked at both of the girls as closely as she could. "Silver Spoon looks a few days younger than you, Diamond Tiara, so I don't think you were exactly born together."

"No. We were. We do everything together." They both droned on, turning towards their friends. "And soon, your friends will do the same. Everyone at this school will, until we are all one hivemind, living in perfect harmony."

"Alright, that seems a little weird..." Sunset muttered under her breath.

"It's not weird. In fact, it's wonderful." As both of the girls spoke, purple inspiriting flames began to dance around them as they both stood up and held each other's hands, while extending their free ones out towards Sunset. "Join us. Become part of the harmony, and live together with us. You soon won't have to worry about a thing..."

"Uh, girls? What's going on?" Sunset cocked a brow at Diamond and Silver as they slowly took a step towards Sunset. "Are you sure that you're alright? You seem a bit out of it."

"SUNSET! THE YO-KAI WATCH!" Pinkie cried out from the bleachers as she saw Diamond and Silver advancing on her friend.

"Well, I guess that there's no harm in checking..." Sunset tried to scan around the the Yo-kai inspiriting Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon, but like with Cornfused, she couldn't find anyone casting the flames on the two girls. "Wait, what?! Not again..."

"Join us. All of us... We are one." They groaned, as a feint shadow appeared above their heads.

"Maybe Cornfused was right." Sunset ran over towards her bag and fetched out her new Yo-kai Watch U. She hastily wrapped it around her arm and tightened it up, bearing the watch on her right arm. "Guess it's time to see who's really behind this!"

"A New Yo-kai Watch, Sunset?" Applejack looked at the new watch as she watched her point the lens towards Diamond and Silver. "Don't ya only need one to deal with Yo-kai?"

"Not all Yo-kai can be seen by the regular Yo-kai Watch, Applejack. I tried to save Miss Cheerilee from one earlier and it couldn't find him." She turned on the light and saw the Yo-kai begin to appear before them. "Gotcha! Now let's see who we're dealing with this time!"

What appeared about Diamond and Silver's head was a Yo-kai shaped like a beamed musical note with two dots. One of them was orange while the other was green. Both wore white bean hats and robes as they waved their arms with just as much sync as their inspirited victims were displaying.

"Who's that?" Rainbow Dash pointed towards the music note Yo-kai as it hobbled towards the group. "And why did it have to inspirit those two?"

"Well, whatever it is, it's already put Diamond and Silver into a deep inspirit." Sunset fished two Yo-kai Medals out of her bag. "Since I've got two Yo-kai Watches now, and that Yo-kai seems to be two stuck together, I think that two-on-one seems fair, don't you think?"

"Come on out, my friend! Calling Cornfused!" She pulled out his medal and launched it airborne before aiming the Yo-kai Watch U's slot to catch it. She leapt up into the air and pushed the new medal into the slot. "Yo-kai Medal! Do your thing!"

"Ladies and gentlemen! Mysterious!" The Yo-kai Watch U cut out a brief fanfare of horns as a group of samba dancers appeared around Cornfused and began shaking their bodies left and right while holding pom-poms.

Delirious!
Hilarious!
Mysterious!

"Cornfused!" He cried, appearing before Sunset Shimmer and her friends.

"Now for some back up! Come on out, Signibble!" Sunset took out another medal and threw it up high as well, catching it as it fell back into her hand. "Yo-kai Medal! Do your thing!" She put Signibble's medal into the regular Yo-kai Watch.

"SUMMONING: MYSTERIOUS!" The original watch declared, firing out yellow beams of light.

Boo-shiggy, boo-shiggy
Boogie-woogie!
Cling-clang, delirious
MYSTERIOUS!

"Signibble!" He somersaulted forward and threw his arms out to his sides.

"Yo-kai! Stop inspiriting our friends!" Sunset called towards the music note, throwing her knuckles down by her sides.

"Who are you?" The Yo-kai asked, looking at Sunset Shimmer with a raised eyebrow. "We don't think we've ever seen the likes of you before. We would like to know your name before we battle."

"Sunset Shimmer. Bearer of the Yo-kai Watch. I'm here to save our friends from your inspiriting powers," she said. "Now free them at once, or else Signibble and Cornfused'll have to fight you."

"A fight? Well, there is no better way to find out who works better in tandem, so you're on!" The new Yo-kai clapped its' hands together, causing a small shockwave of purple energy to strike three more students and leave inspiriting flames. "Come, bearer! Your harmony versus ours!"

"Signibble! Cornfused! Attack!" Sunset jabbed her finger at the music note Yo-kai, prompting both of hers to charge in.

"Try this on for size!" Signibble fired lightning out of its' head and tried to strike the Yo-kai, but both head simply swung out of the way and daintly slid over the edge of the beam before dropping down hard on his head.

"We are Harmory. We are a Yo-kai that will unify everyone in perfect synchronicity." It said, jumping off of Signibble's head. "Join us and let go of the hard lives you lead. Learn that togetherness is utopia."

"Harmory? The name certainly fits!" Sunset squatted down and picked Cornfused up. "You're harming everyone you bring together in harmony! That's not right at all!" She hurled Cornfused towards the Yo-kai and watched him grab onto the beam that joined them together.

"Oh! Harmory! I get it!" Pinkie Pie chuckled as she watched the fight continue. "Now go for it, Sunset! Break that Yo-kai's trance and save Di and Silvy!"

"Di and Silvy?" Sunset briefly turned her head towards Pinkie Pie and her friends.

"Just clever little nicknames I came up for them when we played in the park the other day. Now go get 'em, Sunset!" Pinkie Pie fist-pumped and punched the air, cheering energetically as she watched Sunset continue to battle Harmory.

"Togetherness is betterness." Harmory joined hands and glowed a shade of green, causing little orbs of blue magic to twinkle around them as their wounds were restored. "Fighting alone only leads to anguish. Join with us."

"It healed itself?" Sunset raised a brow as she got both Cornfused and Signibble together. "Looks like I'm gonna need to focus on taking it down faster. Cornfused. Signibble. Come close."

"What is it, Sunset?" Cornfused asked, cocking a brow at her.

"Harmory's a tough opponent, so we're gonna have to think of an effective way to take her down." Sunset looked over and saw the Yo-kai begin to assimilate more students sitting on the bleachers before moving on to the people on the course and even the member of staff overseeing it. "Both of her heads make her a pretty tactical opponent, so we just need to break her concentration."

"But how are we gonna do that?" Signibble turned towards Harmory and watched her using her powers to take yet another group of students. "She's getting stronger the more people she assimilates! Soon, she's gonna have the whole world doing the same thing at the same time!"

"I know! That's why we've gotta stop her!" Sunset's eyes grew desperate as she began to stamp on the ground. What do I do? What do I do? C'mon brain, don't fail me now! Give me an idea!

All of a sudden, a spark ran through Sunset's mind as she took in everything that was going on around her. She had access to a Yo-kai that could leave others confused, while the other one could manipulate electricity and cause powerful static shocks. As she watched Harmory gather up more humans for her entourage, Sunset's eyes lit up as Pinkie held a lightbulb above her head and turned it on.

"I've got it!" Sunset smiled as she faced down Harmory. "Cornfused! Give her an inspirit!"

"Well, alright then, but I don't see what it'll do..." Cornfused launched off his own inspiriting flames that struck Harmory head-on and coated her in the ethereal will-o-wisps. "Now what?"

"Wait and see..." Sunset gave a smirk to Harmory as the inspirit Cornfused lay onto her was beginning to take effect.

"Huh? What's going on?" Harmory looked around and put one of her hands to one of her heads. "Who am I? What am I doing here?"

"She's confused! Signibble! Take her down! Cornfused, keep the inspirits up! We've got this!" Sunset rallied her Yo-kai to act, and watched as Signibble fired bolt after bolt of electricity at Harmory, while Cornfused kept on pumping out the purple fires. "Yeah! That's right! Keep going!"

"Take this! And this! And some of these!" Signibble lunged his fingers towards Harmory, piercing through the fires and striking her directly on the face. He used his fingers as if they were guns and started performing some free-style shots, where he performed backflips, looked away while shooting, and even put them right onto her faces, booping her noses as he shocked her once again. "And now for the haymaker!" He began to gather soultimate energy briefly before he took in enough and fired a massive wave of lightning at her. "SIGNAL SHOCK!"

"Got her!" Sunset fist-pumped herself as she watched Harmory get fried to a crisp before slamming down hard onto the hard stone steps. As she watched the Yo-kai cough and catch her breath, the inspiriting flames that had appeared around the students she had captured were beginning to disappear.

"Ouchie..." Harmory slowly got onto her feet and rubbed her heads with her hands as she began to re-orient herself. "What happened? And why do I suddenly smell like ash?"

"Harmory. Get up." Sunset pulled the Yo-kai into the air and held her in both of her hands. "What were you thinking, trying to turn everyone in the school into mindless zombies? That seems more like something King Void and his Dark Yo-kai would do—not someone as innocent and sweet-looking as you!"

"We are having trouble to find humans to inspirit that have as much compatibility as we do." Harmory jumped off of Sunset's hands and drifted off back to Diamond and Silver. "These two girls practically do everything together, so naturally, as a Harmory, it is our life purpose to inspirit them so that they may embrace this perfect synchronicity."

"Yeah, but that's still no reason for you to go out of your way to steal their freedom. That doesn't seem like something you two would be able to do." Sunset threw her arms out towards Harmory. "Can you explain that?"

"Humans affected by Harmories can often end up with some side effects. Be it dehydration, munchies, or even slight loss of consciousness, our only goal is to make it so that we unify them and any other group in perfect harmony." Both of Harmory's heads nodded before Sunset and knelt before her. "We apologise for our powers spinning out of control like that. If there is anything that we may do to repay the favour, then we would gladly take you up on it."

"Well..." Sunset watched the other students rub their heads as they got back onto their feet and regained control of their minds. They had no idea of what had transpired or that they had been inspirited by a Yo-kai and could only gather their breaths as they stood upright again. "I guess I can't blame you if you can't control your powers. I've met a few Yo-kai before who have no control over what they're doing, so no harm no fowl as they say."

"Mayhaps a Yo-kai Medal will ease your suffering." Harmory reached into her robes and pulled out a single Yo-kai Medal, tossing it over to her. "With it, not only will you be able to control us, but you can spread the joy of togetherness and unity to all of your friends. Regardless, we wish you a pleasant life and all of the fruits that it may bear." Harmory vanished from sight, leaving nothing but purple smoke behind her.

"Harmory..." Sunset looked at the medal and shone it in the light of the sun, waving the light around as she looked at the back before clutching it tightly in the palm of her hands. She pulled out Signibbble and Cornfused's medals before putting all three away in her bag. "What are these American Yo-kai? And how different are they to regular Yo-kai? What's their game?"

"Good work, Sunset." Pinkie Pie gave Sunset a gentle pat on the back as she put the new medals away. "You took down that creepy music note Yo-kai and saved Di, Silvy, and almost everyone else here! You're amazing!"

"Thank you, Pinkie, but I still don't get it." Sunset looked at her brand new Yo-kai Watch U, unstrapping it from herself as she slid it in with the new medals that she had accrued. "What are these American Yo-kai? What can they do? What makes them so different from the normal ones? I still need to find the answers..." She looked up into the sky and watched a few birds fly overhead as she lost herself in her thoughts.

Author's Notes:

Now, I know that the Yo-kai Watch U is japanese only, so the U Mysterious tribe might not be accurate to how it is when the game finally gets localized, but I do hope that you liked it for what it's worth. Also, in terms of the American Yo-kai, I only know of a few who got their names translated, with many others still remaining Japanese.

Now, the bosses of Yo-kai Watch 3 don't count, seeing as how they're bosses and all and that I can let them off. But there will be other Yo-kai Watch 3 Yo-kai introduced, as well as Japan-favourite USAPyon (Who I always thought was another form of Jibanyan for the longest time). So look forward to that in the future.

Have a great day, everyone!
