Chapter 40: The Game Begins

Twilight, Sci-Twi, and Sunset Shimmer all walked back into Timers and More with Whisper and Jibanyan close behind them. After having defeated Chansin, Tengloom, and Swelton, the three of them were already imagining of Mr. Goodsight upgrading their Yo-kai Watches and pushing them up to the next rank.

"Mr. Goodsight! We're back!" Sci-Twi called out and skipped inside the building.

"Well, howdy, girls!" Goodsight gave the trio a bright smile as he pulled his head from the workbench. "Didn't expect to see you all back so soon. I trust that you've taken care of the Yo-kai I asked you to get rid of?"

"Yep!" Sci-Twi nodded vigorously. "Swelton, Chansin, and Tengloom are gone. All thanks to us!"

"You're pretty peppy, aren't you?" Sunset smirked and looked over at Sci-Twi. "You sure you're not inspirited by a Yo-kai that makes you happy?"

"Highly impossible." Whisper crossed his arms and shook his head. "Being a Yo-kai myself, I'm able to see my fellow brethren a mile away. And I cannot see Happierre or Peppilion anywhere. Sci-Twi is clean and happy of her own volition."

"Well, whatever the case, I'm glad that ya'll handled those troublemakers that quickly." Goodsight smirked and placed his elbow against the glass counter. "Life's a lot simpler without them there troublemakers, ain't it? Makes the world flow smoother."

"You can say that again." Sci-Twi clutched Lie-in Heart's medal tightly behind her back.

"Well, I'll be upgradin' yer Yo-kai Watches now." Goodsight held out his hand. "Just hand those little puppies over and I'll crank those ranks up. Soon, a whole new rank of Yo-kai'll be waiting for ya'll."

Twilight, Sunset, and Sci-Twi took off their Yo-kai Watches and put them on the counter. They watched Goodsight take the three of them over to his workbench and pull out his toolbox.

"Hey, I'm gonna be a while, so why don't ya take a seat on the couch." Mr. Goodsight pointed over to a pair of purple sofas that circled a small coffee table. "While you're at it, I can have my lovely assistant get ya'll a coffee if'n ya want some."

"Assistant?" Twilight cocked a brow.

"Baku? You in there, doll?" Goodsight called to the curtains to the right of his counter. "We got three gals here who're in need of a perk-up!"

"Baku here. Baku deliver anti-sleepy drink!"

A small purple elephant with a pink rear ran into the room, balancing a silver tray with three mugs of coffee sitting delicately on top. Baku's voice was scratchy and female, and she had long, sharp teeth and yellow eyes.

"Baku?" Twilight looked as the Yo-kai entered the room and laid down the drinks on the table.

"Baku's a Yo-kai. More specifically, a Yo-kai that makes you fall asleep." Goodsight chuckled and smiled at Baku. "She sprays her sleep smoke on you, you sleep like a baby. Simple, really. On top of that, she eats your dreams while you sleep and can even help you stay up real-late at night if you so wanted to."

"Interesting." Sunset petted Baku as she took her mug of coffee. "So there are Yo-kai that can make you fall asleep?"

"And ones that keep you wide awake so much that you develop rather ugly bags underneath your eyes." Whisper nodded. "There's a Yo-kai for quite literally everything in this world!"

"Including sleep?" Twilight rolled her eyes.

"Yes. Including sleep," Whisper nodded.

"There's a whole lot more to these Yo-kai than I thought." Sunset scratched her chin with the back of her hand. "If they can will people to fall asleep as well as what I've seen already, then I might just have to be on guard for future encounters."

"You never really know what to expect when dealing with Yo-kai, Miss Shimmer." Goodsight smiled. "Nate himself learned that first-hand when he held the Yo-kai Watch."

"As do I." Twilight Sparkle took a sip of her coffee. "When I got the Yo-kai Watch, I ran into a Boss Yo-kai named Felycan. In her dying breath, she mentioned King Void. Then, the Puppet Brothers attacked, then Kin and Gin, the Dark Yo-kai, everything's been a bit of a roller-coaster ride for me recently."

"Yes. It certainly has been more eventful for you than it has for Nate." Whisper looked away. "He never had to deal with this much world-ending business every day. You've been harassed, hounded, and tortured by King Void; and he's far worse than anything Nate ever had to fight when I was his master!"

"Whisper. He fought a squid, an old hag, and a godfather. I'm pretty sure that he's had more hassle than Twilight's had in her life." Jibanyan shrugged and brushed against the carpet.

"I'll have you know that they were all incredibly tough and menacing Yo-kai!" Whisper yelled at Jibanyan. "If you haven't forgotten, Squiddilius Mckraken was a tyrant who wanted to conquer the human world with an iron fist; Dame Dedtime was a monster of a Yo-kai who tried to absorb every living and non-living thing in existence; and Gogogo Godfather used an otherworldly stone to nearly enslave the entire earth!"

"Let's not forget King Void." Twilight shuddered. "He rules the Dark Yo-kai and makes them out of regular Yo-kai, he has Kin and Gin by his side, and not to mention those eleven remaining Dark Ones of his. He's a king alright. An evil, cruel, malicious, and absolutely despicable king at that. He's even worse than the Yo-kai that you described, Whisper."

"Baku not worried." Baku shook her head, shaking her snout as she did so. "Baku spray sleepy gas, Baku beat King Void easily."

"How are you gonna spray gas on a Yo-kai that can fly and can turn you into a Dark Yo-kai in seconds, Baku?" Goodsight raised a brow.

"Baku try! No knock Baku up until Baku try!" Baku blew steam out of her nose and glared at Goodsight.

"Hey, hey, easy, doll!" Goodsight pushed his arms out. "I've got confidence in you, you know that."

"Baku not believe you." She shook her head and walked back to Twilight and her friends.

"Don't worry, Baku. I know how you feel." Twilight patted Baku's snout and closed her eyes. "Whisper's hard on me too."

"I AM NOT!" Whisper blurted out, pushing himself into Twilight's face.

"Sorry, but you kind of are." Twilight grabbed Whisper's face and threw him against the wall. "You understand me, right, Baku?"

"Yes. Baku do understand." She nodded and looked up at Twilight. "Baku may be weak, but Baku trying to get stronger. Baku make Yo-kai sleepy, then Baku eat sleepies. Baku do same with humans, keep them up at night."

"Why do you keep saying your name?" Sci-Twi tilted her head. "It seems a bit strange..."

"What wrong with Baku saying name? All Bakus say name, since beginning of Yo-kai World." She pranced over to Sci-Twi.

"I just assumed that it was a speech pattern error." Sci-Twi shrugged. "Forgive me for what I said."

"It alright." Baku inwardly shrugged. "All humans confused by Yo-kai. Baku know this as fact."

There was mostly silence in Timers and More after that. The girls simply drank away at their coffees, gulping them down once they had cooled off. They let the flavour of caffeine dance around in their mouths momentarily, swishing them around before they swallowed their drinks, letting the taste dive down into their stomachs. There was an odd conversation here and there, but nothing too major for the girls. Mostly talk about Yo-kai and friendship.

"Done! Upgraded Yo-kai Watches!" Goodsight laid all three of them down on the counter and put them on the girls' wrists one by one. "Twilight. Sunset. Sci-Twi. You're all good to go. Up into C Rank."

"Thank you, Mr. Goodsight." Twilight strapped her watch onto her wrist and pulled it to make sure that it was tightly secured around her arm. "This should help us a lot."

"Yeah, thanks." Sunset gave Goodsight a smile as she fitted her watch onto her arm.

"Now, ya'll take care with them there upgraded watches." Goodsight pointed to the watches. "Quality craftsmanship there. Nothing but the best for you gals." He crossed his arms. "And if you want to upgrade to B rank, then make sure you come round and see me again someday."

"I'm sure that we'll be ready." Sci-Twi smirked and glided her arm over her Yo-kai Watches. "We've made some strong friends already, and I can bet you that we'll only make more."

"There's nothing we can't do as long as we're all together." Sunset Shimmer bent her arms and smirked. "We'll fight King Void to the bitter end and befriend every Yo-kai we meet!"

"Whoa! You girls are full of energy!" Twilight stumbled backwards at Sunset and Sci-Twi's words.

"Confidence inspires victory." Whisper raised his finger. "If you believe that you can do it, then you can. If Sci-Twi and Sunset are this confident, then I'm sure that together, we can all defeat him."

"I'm pretty sure that it takes a palpable power different to win, Whisper." Twilight looked back at him.

"Not to us." Sunset nodded.

"It doesn't matter how big and strong those Yo-kai are." Sci-Twi cracked her knuckles. "With Lie-in Heart by my side, we'll be able to strike them down effortlessly!"

"We can do this!" They both cheered together, punching the air with their fists.

"Come on, Twilight, get invested." Whisper nudged her elbows. "Your friends count on you. You should do the same for them."

"Alright, Whisper." Twilight joined her friends in hand. "Together, standing side-by-side, we'll drive away the darkness and crush King Void's army! Nothing is impossible!"

"One... two... three! FRIENDSHIP!" The girls shouted and ran out of the door with Whisper and Jibanyan close by their sides.

"They seem pretty happy, don't they?" Goodsight chuckled. "Well, I reckon that their right in a way. If you just believe in yourself, then even a big, bad king like Void isn't really much of a problem at all for those three." He watched them run across the road and into the distance. "Let's just see how much their beliefs'll carry them..."

"King Void's Dark Yo-kai are pushing forward even now, yet we still sit on our haunches and wait." Nurarihyon tipped his hand before Queen Ephemer. "Why do you trust Princess Twilight that much, your highness?"

"It is not just Yo-kai power that Twilight and her friends now wield. But something far greater than anything I could expect from a mortal being." Queen Ephemer crossed her arms. "The Magic of Friendship."

"The Magic of Friendship? Just a silly little rumor." A yellow cat with a purple coat stepped in between both Nurarihyon and Queen Ephemer. "Nothing more than a fairy tale made up by the ponies of that world."

"We have no time for such silly little children's stories." A blue dog with a yellow coat joined the cat. "Lord Nurarihyon is right. If we hesitate, King Void will destroy us. We need to attack now!"

"Inumaro! Nekokiyo! Stand down!" Nurarihyon pushed both of the Yo-kai away. "This is a matter between me and Queen Ephemer. Do not interfere!"

"Y-yes, Lord Nurarihyon!" They both quivered and bowed before him before slinking away.

"With all due respect, your highness, this is a case of majority rule. Me, Inumaro, and Nekokiyo's standing point is very firm." Nurarihyon's brows lowered as he squinted at the queen. "You need to make some form of attack. Just how long are we going to let ourselves get subdued by that monster?"

"If I didn't value your efforts to create Dai-Yoma Nura-Neira, the three of you wouldn't even be alive at this point in time." Queen Ephemer glared at him, elicting gasps from him and his two servants. "That is your problem, Nurarihyon. You are strong, yes, but as Nate, Inaho, and the Yo-kai Watch Busters have proven, you are nothing more than a creature of the darkness, one who acts justly, but doesn't consider the grave consequences of your actions."

"Tch. You're just like him, aren't you?" Nurarihyon snarled. "Just like Lord Enma, you don't seem to want to act until the time's just right! We are losing Yo-kai day after day, and you wish to keep waiting in the wings?!" He got up in Queen Ephemer's face. "If you're not going to do something about this, then I will!"

Nurarihyon took in deep breaths and became consumed within a black globe. His eyes glowed bright red and he grew in size before her. Thorn-ridden tentacles replaced his body and legs, and purple crescent moon-shaped horns rested on his shoulders. A gleaming red gem appeared on where his chest used to be and he let off a snarl as he eyed up the queen.

"I have nothing more to say to you. I'll deal with this myself." He snarled and leapt away with his tentacles. "Inumaro, Nekokiyo. Come! We're repelling King Void's next attack!"

"Yes, my lord!" Both Inumaro and Nekokiyo ran after Nurarihyon. They threw the doors open and dashed through, closing them afterwards.

Queen Ephemer simply sighed. "Oh, Nurarihyon. You're walking right into a trap. If only you could just be rational about this..."

Kin and Gin looked down on the Yo-kai World, watching Nurarihyon, Inumaro, and Nekokiyo run out of the castle and disappear in puffs of purple smoke.

"So... The dark one wishes to fight, does he?" Kin smirked.

"So arrogant. No wonder Lord Enma crushed his futile attempts to stop Yo-kai and humans being friends." Gin shrugged. "He will fall, just like all of the others."

"True. The Dark Yo-kai have been gathering, and the army is mass multiplying as we speak." Kin pushed her fingers together. "It won't be long now before King Void declares his next attack and decimates these putrid worlds."

"Still, though, I'm curious to see how this Nurarihyon fellow handles the Dark Yo-kai..." Gin looked towards the sky of the Yo-kai World. "Shall we go and find out, Kin?"

"Indeed, Gin. Let us see how long he lasts before he dies by our hands..." She smirked and disappeared along with her sister.
