Chapter 37: Goodsight's Challenge

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Twilight, Sci-Twi, and Sunset Shimmer all walked down the road with their Yo-kai Watches tightly fastened around their wrists. They were all showing off all of the medals that they had acquired. Whenever Sunset and Sci-Twi got curious about certain Yo-kai that they had befriended, they talked to Whisper about it, who immediately gave them their answers.

"I heard about the Midnight Sparkle thing, Twilight." Sci-Twi put her hand on Twilight's shoulders and gently looked her in the eyes. "As someone who's had to deal with this kinda stuff before, I feel your pain. But you can win against her."

"King Void will just keep on tempting me, though." Twilight gently took Sci-Twi's hand off of her shoulders. "I need to get stronger so that I can prove to my friends that Midnight Sparkle can't serve King Void. That's why I proposed that we all go and see Mr. Goodsight at Timers and More today."

"You know, it's pretty bizarre how things work for you, Twilight Sparkle." Whisper floated alongside her as she walked down the streets. "A few days ago, King Void and his Dark Yo-kai attacked Ponyville. Then a few days later, it seems like everything's gone back to normal for you."

"It won't stay that way for long, nyan." Jibanyan walked on all fours on Twilight's other side. "King Void's probably planning something bad. Nyot only did he destroy Ponyville, but he also forced Twilight to do it. I know we've seen some pretty bad Yo-kai before, Whisper, but this King Void guy is on a whole 'nyother level..."

"Exactly, Jibanyan." Twilight picked him up and stroked him. "That's why we need to upgrade our Yo-kai Watches. The more powerful Yo-kai we befriend, the better chance we have of beating King Void and saving our worlds."

"I agree." Whisper nodded. "You even had Gargaros on your side, and yes Lash managed to not only disarm him, but send him flying and use his own club against us."

"Yeah. Considering that he's supposed to be this big, bad nightmare taken physical form, to see him get slapped around by this Lash guy like that makes me worry about King Void." Sunset Shimmer nodded. "I mean, we've dealt with evil things in Equestria before, but from the way you described him, it sounds like he makes everything else we've thought seem like child's play."

"If he can make my pony self become Midnight Sparkle, then we're really gonna have a hard time trying to beat him." Sci-Twi rubbed the pendant around her neck. "Even with these crystals around our necks, if this King Void can make other Yo-kai evil, invoke your darkness, and destroy Ponyville all at the same time, then he's even worse than anything you and I have ever fought before."

"No wonder that Queen Ephemer is so upset about all of this." Whisper shook his head slowly. "After all of the goings-on with Nate, I definitely have to say that this is quite possibly the most disastrous thing the worlds have ever had to face!"

"Queen Ephemer?" Sunset cocked a brow at Whisper's words. "Who the heck is she? Some Equestrian ruler I wasn't told about?"

"Queen Ephemer is actu—"

"We're here!" Whisper cut Twilight off and darted over towards the door of a new shop. "Timers and More!" He waved his arm, motioning the girls to follow him. "Come on, girls! Let's upgrade your Yo-kai Watches!"

"Wow. You're pretty enthusiastic, aren't you, Whisper?" Sunset gave him a coy smile and walked into the building with Twilight and Sci-Twi.

The inside of Timers and More much more stately than the girls had been expecting. With brown carpet floors, two couches and a coffee table, many different clocks hung up on the walls, and even a glass counter with many different watches underneath the glass. Despite how small the place was, there was a lot to take in.

"Ah! Twilight 'n' friends!" Goodsight pulled himself from the workbench behind the counter and walked up to the trio. "Good to see ya again."

"Hello, Mr. Goodsight." Sci-Twi shook his hand. "We're here to upgrade our Yo-kai Watches."

"Good news!" Goodsight chuckled and crossed his arms. "Knew you'd wanna upgrade 'em after that mess with them there Puppet Brothers. For being Boss Yo-kai, they really put ya'll through the wringer, huh?"

"I just have one question before we begin." Twilight put her Yo-kai Watch on the counter and pushed it towards him. "You mentioned that we needed to run some errands for you. What does that mean exactly?"

"Well, first of all, you're gonna need ta keep yer watch, missy." Goodsight put it back on Twilight's arm. "Upgrading a Yo-kai Watch isn't just something that comes by all willy-nilly 'n' stuff. You're gonna hafta work in order to give these puppies a boost."

"Just give us the word and we'll get right on it, Goodsight." Sunset readied her Yo-kai Watch and took up a combat stance.

"I need the three of you to take out a few Yo-kai that've been causing some pandemonium here in this town. And before any of ya'll get worked up about that King Void fellow, it's not any of his Dark Yo-kai." Goodsight shook his head. "No. Instead, I want you to take care of some regular run-of-the-mill Yo-kai that've been causing mischief to the poor people of this here town."

"Whoever are we going to hunt down this time, Mr. Goodsight?" Whisper puffed out his chest.

"This time? You've done this before, Whisper?" Twilight looked back at him.

"Why, of course! Every time Nate went on an adventure, Goodsight would always have him hunting down Yo-kai in order to upgrade his Yo-kai Watch." Whisper nodded. "Say, Goodsight? I don't suppose you've seen Nate around recently, have you?"

"Well not here exactly. But I heard he's doing fine all the way back in Springdale with his friends." Goodsight gave a warm smile as he remembered the time had spent with Nate. "Such a good kid. Mighty argumentative with you, most of the time, though."

"Well, I can't help it if I have to refer to the Yo-kai Pad half of the time!" Whisper flailed his arms.

"You refer to that thing all the time, Whisper." Jibanyan deadpanned.

"I DO NOT!" Whisper blurted out and looked back at the girls. He rubbed the back of his head and blushed. "Anyway, carry on."

"First Yo-kai I want you to take out is a guy named Swelton." Mr. Goodsight gave Twilight and her friends a picture of a humanoid Yo-kai with red horns and a towel. The Yo-kai was incredibly obese in stature and had sweat dripping all over him. "He's been reported to have caused kids at a local kindergarten to get too sweaty, even when they were swimming."

"Sweating while swimming?" Sci-Twi cocked a brow as she looked at Swelton's portrait. "Doesn't that seem impossible?"

"Not to him it don't." Goodsight fished out another picture. "Next Yo-kai's a guy named Tengloom." He showed them all a picture of a blue bird wearing Japanese geta sandals, a khaki shirt with a brown and orange vest over it, and a small hat with a strap. "He's been hanging out at the local park, causing people to get real gloomy."

"Well he has 'gloom' in his name." Sunset took the next picture.

"And yet, he's somehow got a fanbase back in the Yo-kai World..." Whisper whispered into Sunset's ears.

"And our last little perp is a Yo-kai named Chansin." Goodsight's last picture was that of another human-like Yo-kai. It was dressed up like a ninja with red armour, bandaged hands and a straw hat with a blue and a red strip of fabric coming out of the top of it. "Students at Crystal Prep got inspirited by this guy, and now they're taking chances too often. Caused their grades to slip way below their average."

"Wait, Crystal Prep?!" Sci-Twi lurched backwards at that remark.

"What's so important about that place?" Twilight asked as she took the last picture off of Goodsight's hands. "Isn't it just a prep school?"

"It's where your human copy attended before the Friendship Games happened." Sunset Shimmer looked over at Sci-Twi. "The students there got really jealous of her, and she didn't really have the best time at the Games because of it."

"Blackmail, intimidation, isolation, lack of friends, you name it." Sci-Twi twisted her wrist repeatedly. "Heck, I wouldn't have come to Canterlot High if your friends hadn't shown me a better way..."

"Think of it this way, Twilight. If she'd had stayed at Crystal Prep after the Games, then it would've been like you never leaving for the Summer Sun Celebration in Ponyville all those years back." Sunset put her hand on Twilight's shoulders. "Imagine that..."

"I wouldn't have met my friends, defeated all of those villains, or have become an alicorn if I didn't go to Ponyville and save the day from Nightmare Moon." Twilight let those images run through her mind; of an Equestria where she hadn't met her friends on the night of the Summer Sun Celebration. Once she'd seen enough, she shook her head and returned to reality. "Let's... not dwell on those thoughts for now."

"You three can take the Yo-kai out in any order you please, and heck, even befriend them if possible." Goodsight gave them all another smile. "Just come back here when you're done and tell me all about it. I'll be sure to give those Yo-kai Watches of yours a right proper tunin'."

"Y-Yeah..." Sci-Twi rubbed the ground with the tips of her shoes. "We'll be sure to get right on it, Mr. Goodsight." And with that, she slowly walked to the door and pushed it open.

"Yeesh. What pooped on her chocobars?" Jibanyan climbed down from Twilight's shoulders and followed her out.

"My other self sounded like she really didn't want to go back to Crystal Prep..." Twilight looked at her human double waiting outside of Timers and More. She was looking left and right and twiddling her fingers.

"You can blame Principal Cinch for that," Sunset said.

"Cinch? As in Abacus Cinch? The tyrant ruler of the Coltic Empire across the seas?" Twilight raised a brow at the name.

"Yep. That's the one." Sunset crossed her arms and walked out of the door.

"Didn't think she'd have a human copy in this world, I must admit." Twilight followed Sunset out with Whisper and Jibanyan following closely behind.

The trio walked towards the park to find the first Yo-kai on their list. The walk was relatively quiet, with Sci-Twi reflecting on all of the events of the Friendship Games and how her former students at Crystal Prep had treated her when she was a student there. Sunset and Twilight tried to talk to her, but every time they thought of a conversation topic, Sci-Twi waved a hand to stop them.

Seems like this Twilight Sparkle and I have a lot in common... Twilight thought to herself as they crossed the road. The mere mention of Crystal Prep shook her to the core, just like me when King Void forced Lash to make me become Midnight Sparkle. I just hope that I can help her overcome it.

All of this stuff. Yo-kai, King Void, Sci-Twi having to go back to Crystal Prep, it's a lot to take in. Sunset Shimmer was having an inner monologue of her own as she followed her friends to the park. I thought that the crystals from Camp Everfree would change our lives forever, but I guess we only really scratched the surface of weird stuff now that Yo-kai are running around. Whatever happens, we need to be ready to face it all—for the sake of everyone...
