Chapter 3: Captain's Log 1: The Displacer

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

This is the first time I've ever written a log in a journal. Where do I start? Probably from the beginning, I guess...

"Why is it so hot in this thing!?" I groaned, slumping over and pulling off my helmet, running a gloved hand through my hair.

"Hey, don't look at me man, you're the one who wanted to go as Gokai Silver." Jacob said, tapping a cold bottle of water against my face.

I muttered my thanks and placed the cool water against my head, feeling my temperature drop before cracking the bottle open and chugging its contents.

"Slow down man! You'll get the hiccups, and I know how much you hate that." Jacob said, sitting down next to me.

"Stuff it," I grumbled, gulping down the last dregs of water before wiping the moisture from my face, "how are you not hot in that shawl you're wearing!?" I pointed to his Basco ta Jolokia costume.

"It's not as bad as you might think," Jacob replied, adjusting his gaudy tricorn hat so that it no longer flopped against his face, "I just wish the hat was a bit more cooperative."

"Says the totally straight young adult wearing a tunic in public," I said, nudging him in the ribs with my elbow.

"Says the Gai currently sweating his ass off in a spandex onesie. Ika-chan~" He retorted, the both of us bursting out laughing.

I sighed, and looked around at the various costumed anime fans making their last couple of rounds as Fanime 2016 began to wind down.

"I'm not ready for college, man." I groaned, holding my head in my hands.

"What bought this on?" Jacob asked, cracking open his own bottle of water, "you're not getting cold feet, are you? Ika-chan~"

"Be real with me here for a minute here!" I said, rubbing the bridge of my nose, "we've been together for what? The past seventeen years of our lives? Hell, if you weren't so damn pasty, people would think we shared the same parents!"

"Gee, thanks." Jacob deadpanned, taking another sip from his bottle.

I grinned, "sorry. What I mean is, do you really think we're ready for this?"

"I try not to think about it too hard. The future is a scary, scary place man." Jacob replied, a wide grin on his face, "besides, this may be our last con for a while, but I'm pretty sure this pair of weebs can find a bit more awesome swag to take home!" He stood up, extending his hand to me, "ready to raid and pillage one last time, my fellow pirate?"

I chuckled, grabbing my swag bag and letting him help me up, "why not? Gotta warn you though, I just got my second wind" I said, slipping my helmet back on.

Jacob grinned, "then let's go."

"Avast and prepare to be boarded!" We both shouted, charging headfirst into the maze of booths, stands, and cosplay groups.

Both me and Jacob stood panting at the opposite end of the showroom floor, both of us and our wallets were nearly exhausted, our overstuffed swag bags on our backs.

"Hey J, how much you got left?" I asked, taking deep gulps of fresh air.

"About ten dollars left, you?"

"Same, guess we can kiss our savings goodbye."

"But it was worth it, right? Besides, that DJ-P0N3 cosplayer was pretty cute." Jacob said, elbowing my arm lightly.

I chuckled, "with your luck, she's already spoken for."

Jacob winced, "ouch, below the belt dude."

We both ended up laughing out loud, drawing stares from all the surrounding con patrons.

"Shall we go? Remember, you're cooking tonight."

I tore my gaze away from the Yang Xiao Long cosplayer I'd been ogling, "what? Oh, yeah. It's burgers tonight."

A wide grin appeared across Jacob's face, "now she's definitely taken, sorry Ika-chan~"

I facepalmed, "can we just go, please? And stop calling me that!" I groaned.

Jacob cackled, "aw, why not try asking her out? Maybe after she slaps you silly, you can kiss and make up?"

"Yeah... not doing that, nope." I said, grabbing my chuckling friend's wrist and pulling him towards the exit.

"My, my, what excellent costumes the both of you have." A raspy voice said off to the side, the sound was soft enough to be called a whisper, yet clear enough that it cut through the background noise of the convention, "it's a shame that they're woefully incomplete."

I turned towards the speaker, a guy dressed as Xur, the exotic weapons merchant from Destiny stood there, two glowing yellow orbs blazing from under his hood, regarding us with detached interest, wisps of smoke escaping from the gaps in his trench coat and hood.

"What, do you want a picture or something?" I asked.

He waved a gloved hand, "no, nothing like that. But I believe I have the items that would greatly benefit your characters."

"So, your a prop maker?" Jacob asked.

"Of sorts," he replied, reaching into his coat and withdrawing a strange trumpet, "the Rapparatta," he said, blowing a little tune on it before holding it out to Jacob. Jacob took it in his hands, reveling at the feel and heft of the trumpet.

"And for you," He said, pulling a gun mode version of the Gokai Spear, "the weapon of the one who inherits the dreams of the sixth rangers, the Gokai Spear." He tossed it into the air, a mechanical whirring noise echoed from it as it extended into it's trident form. The Xur cosplayer caught it, handing it to me with both hands.

I hefted the trident, weighing it. It was a beautiful implement, cast from metal but as light as a feather in my hands.

"How much for these?" I asked, "unless you're going to ask for strange coins."

"Dude, I don't think we can even afford these." Jacob said.

"I'm just asking for the cost, we'll hand these back if it's too high." I reasoned.

"Fine, so how much?" Jacob huffed, turning back to the vendor.

The figure chuckled softly, "you just paid the price by asking." He snapped his fingers and I suddenly felt dizzy.

"W-what the hell did you just do to me?" I slurred, staggering toward's the Xur cosplayer, only for him to step aside, allowing me to fall flat on my face. I rolled over to see Jacob similarly affected.

Xur stood over me, chuckling darkly, "me? I only fulfilled your heart's earnest desire."

And with that, I blacked out.

That was how the worst day in my life ended. And how my life as a pirate began.
