Ok, wow. This chapter wound up running away with itself because Shining and Cadence kept working so well and flowing. This chapter has ended up with a surprising emotional rollercoaster of highs and lows, sap and sex.

I really wasn't expecting it to go like this, but it did. Should easily stay the longest chapter, at least. The rest lack the same level of dynamics and history involved here.

Shining Armor was stunned, blinking slowly at the pink mare standing above him.

It wasn’t because he was speechless though.

No, he was physically stunned after Cadence, dressed in her full padded black sparring gear from head to hoof, her mane and tail in braids, had nearly outright tackled him with a full haymaker to the head. She had suddenly come out of nowhere while he was working a striking bag with his forehooves. His entire focus was on making hit after hit, simply ignoring the way his left shoulder felt.

In fact, she hit him so hard that he needed a moment to figure out which direction the floor was in, despite laying on it, as he somewhat dizzily stared up at her. And as he got his wits back, he realized he’d been so focused on the bag, he hadn’t done anything to react when she’d come charging towards him from where he should have easily seen her coming. He couldn’t claim it was a cheap shot when he was one that failed to react accordingly. She even yelled out a battlecry at me, but for the life of me, I can’t recall what she said.

“Buck, Cady! What’d I do now?! I haven’t even seen you all day and you suddenly get the drop on me from outta nowhere?!” Shining eyed her incredulously, wondering what his sometimes, maybe often, ok when wasn’t she, crazy best friend was doing this time.

Princess Cadence scowled, ears perked sharply forward and giving her wings a small, sharp flex. Her eyes looked fierce in a way that he’d seen make even combat veterans flinch when her gaze landed on them. “Shining Francis Armor, pick yourself up off that floor! We’re going a couple rounds right bucking now!”

Shining was suddenly very glad he’d been wearing full sparring gear himself, as the moment he got to his hooves Cadence started to attack, giving him no other option but to start blocking before anything else. With him forced to favor his hurt left shoulder, he already knew what the end result would be. He just wondered how long he’d last before she had him laid out on the mat again.

They had done the same thing numerous times, so Shining wasn’t completely off guard, but lacking the time to think, he couldn’t figure out what brought it on. Their rules were basic, only with full gear, and no magic. They trusted each other not to go too hard, well-experienced with how far they could take things together to vent in a very active fashion. And it was always the worst during Cadence’s estrus cycle. Which he realized she should be in the middle of now, in fact. The unintended sudden thought of helping her vent estrus stress in another, far more intimate, way caused him to make a bad block that let a jarring hit land on his good shoulder. At least she wasn’t teasing him on purpose. That always ended in pain and frustration.

For her end, Cadence was rather pissed off at her best friend and secret love. He’d dislocated his shoulder in sparring with another stallion the day before, it being a planned physical training week. Then, late this morning, Shining’s CO actually sent her a message that Shining was refusing to slow down, despite temporarily being on hold from sparring because of said shoulder.

According to what she’d been told, he simply turned to running and working out. While technically not in the wrong, his CO was asking her to pay him a visit, and hopefully figure out what was on his mind to drive him so hard. The almost ready to retire older stallion was pretty fond of Shining, and it wasn’t an official channel, which told Cadence plenty about how bad it was. She would have arrived sooner if her diplomatic meetings with the Maretanian dignitaries hadn’t taken so long. While they were generally pleasant and easy to deal with, if kind of stuffy, her constant worry about Shining possibly hurting himself had been stressing her out all day. That meant she was irritated in the extreme by the time she went to hunt him down.

She was pleased, if also still a little irked by it, to find him by himself in the officer’s private gym, already wearing his gear, so she got into her own sparring gear before rushing him. She was not in the mood for wasting any time starting to smack some sense into him by whatever means necessary.

Knowing how he got when faced with something serious, she’d been scared she would end up finding him in a hospital bed again. Three years already, and she’d still not entirely forgiven him for the mission that had nearly killed him. He had done the impossible by single-hoofedly holding back the demon that a cult had summoned and saved his wounded troops, and several dozen captive civilians, then collapsing in a pool of his own blood as reinforcements finally made it to them to finish the fight.

It was the only time she had ever used her rank as a princess to postpone a meeting of any kind, and she put aside several. From the very moment she was told he was in critical condition and for the three days it took after getting to the hospital, she had remained at his side until she knew he was no longer in the slightest danger of slipping away. He had crashed twice in the first few hours even after arriving at the military hospital, as close to death as he was that day.

Though heroic as he had been, she hated that medal Celestia gave him for his act of valour, the highest military honor she could bestow, always remembering what it nearly cost. He could have easily received it posthumously like most recipients. Self-sacrifice was as much a quality as a curse for him, as he simply pushed harder under all forms of stress. It didn’t matter if it was a battle or personal problems. He pushed until he dropped, if she didn’t do something to redirect him.

Hopefully someday soon, she could just screw the stupid out of him, but for now, pounding on his big dumb handsome flank would have to do.

Shining was forced to keep blocking over attempting many strikes because of his shoulder slowing him down. Shining was usually skilled enough to be one of the few unicorns that could beat the average pegasus in a melee, themselves generally more dominant in hoof to hoof because they could strike with their wings. On most days, he was also a step ahead of Cadence, herself quietly famous for rivaling almost any other member of the Guard at pure physical sparring. At least, those who dared to square off with her anyway.

Whether because of her rank, or her sparring reputation, only the better skilled veterans in the Guard, and the hilariously outclassed rookies, ever did so. He knew Cadence’s earth pony traits as an alicorn gave her the raw physical strength to easily rival the average Guard stallion. And Cadence had enough skill that she had even earned the informal nickname Love Ninja, after her uncanny flexibility, balance and speed, which left even some pegasi in a daze.

Of course, nopony admitted to how much it also applied to her love magic and matchmaking habits on any given day as well, but the veterans knew how much she loved discretely setting ponies up, whether they wanted her help or not. If she wasn’t right every single time, there’d probably be some actual complaints about it.

But Shining figured with how much she was a blur today, she was possibly, kind of, maybe, probably really mad at him for something.

Cadence whipped around, nearly folding herself in half sideways, spinning around on one foreleg and forcing him to dodge a wing strike that left him open to the now approaching padded hind hoof. Shining Armor was once again forced to ask himself why in Tartarus she liked him in such a way that she would sometimes merrily smack him around, like now, as her hoof connected soundly with his already hurting left shoulder and sent him back to the mat. It was all he could do to simply roll onto his back and hold up his right hoof in surrender, letting out a grunt when he landed and grimacing with his eyes closed at the flare of pain she’d just provided.

All things considered though, with as stupid as he’d been acting, it was what he’d been doing to himself the whole day already. The whole week, really. Simply because it hurt so much more to stop and think about having dinner with Twilight in two days and how he could possibly even begin to deal with everything surrounding his sister and their current situation.

“Oof!” Shining wheezed as Cadence sat on his stomach with only minimal care. The throbbing pain in his shoulder was kind of difficult to ignore for several seconds before he stared up at her. Why exactly do I like spending so much time with the lunatic of love again? Oh yes, because I’m an idiot masochist, and Cady’s completely crazy. And for some stupid reason I find that very attractive. Some days, I swear it’d be easier to jump off a cliff and walk away from the sudden stop at the bottom. Seriously, ow…

“Alright, Shiny. No more dodging or games. I want you to tell me what’s been bothering you so much this week. You’re not getting out of it this time, no matter what you do, so don’t even try to weasel out of it. If you don’t start talking, I’ll use my Blue Marble spell on you again until you cave.” Cadence had placed a foreleg on either side of his head as she hovered over him, unable to stop her secret thrill from knowing what it was so similar to, and she someday hoped to share it with him in bed. She just needed him to start pursuing her, to make the bucking connection that she wanted him as her coltfriend, not just her best friend. She suspected he had known for over two years now, but for some reason he never seemed ready to make that change and she could never figure out why.

Shining blinked before his eyes widened a little. “Don’t you dare! That spell is pure evil and made of crystallized torture for a stallion! Seriously, inducing a rampant and growing case of blue balls while preventing any possible erection to relieve it?! I still can’t believe you used it on me that one time! I don’t care that you asked first!”

Cadence remembered the day she tried convincing him to let her test it out on him a while ago. She’d planned to act like something went wrong and the only way to undo the spell would have been if he got an erection that went straight into her body in some way, or possibly just if she licked him, both of which were really just how the spell was constructed to deactivate in the first place. In the end, she’d chickened out when he couldn’t stand it anymore, and she’d lost that particular chance to break the weird friendzone-but-not-quite state their relationship was stuck in. Now, she was terrified that the new love for another pony he’d gained in the past couple months was going to take him away before he ever turned to her at all. She would never force him, but she also couldn’t understand how he seemed to love her as much as he did, yet never did anything about it!

Outwardly, Cadence was a well-trained graduate of Celestia’s school of poker face, only giving him a hard stare as she roughly pressed her nose against his. Even if she never got to have him, he was still her best friend in all the world, and she needed to know why he was hurting so much. “Then start talking, you dummy. What. is. wrong?!”

They stared at each other for several seconds before something in Shining broke free, forcing him to close his suddenly burning eyes and he turned his head to avoid her gaze. As he did, his right foreleg slipped around her and pulled her in tight against his chest, letting her know he was hurting inside without a word, and he was going to tell her when he figured out how to say it. Feeling her wings soon holding the back of his head as her body relaxed just seemed to make it harder to keep it together. Cadence was the only one that ever made him somehow be able to cry like a foal in private, if something big enough happened. Like when his grandmother passed away several years ago. He never did tell her just how much he loved her for it that day.

For a long stretch, all he could do was cling to her and let her presence calm him, eventually rubbing her back a little before meeting her eyes again. “You, uh, mind if we sit down somewhere more private than a gym first?”

“Mmm, I suppose we can. It’s a little after dinner already, so let’s just head back to my suite. Whatever’s going on, you can yell and scream there if you need to. Maybe even do that adorable blubbering for me again like that one time.” Cadence gave him a teasing, sympathetic smile and nuzzled him a little more intimately than just a friend, then stood up.

Shining sighed as he gave her a bemused look that slowly grew into a faint smirk. “You are such a weirdo for thinking I looked any sort of adorable or cute like that. I was a complete wreck. Is it a mare thing? Or just uniquely crazy you?”

Cadence only gave him a dazzling smile, her eyes glittering.

He snorted at the look in her eye and shook his head in mock dismay after he stood up, carefully rolling his shoulder as he grimaced. With much of the adrenaline and focus gone, it was far more troublesome, but he’d dealt with worse. Walking to her suite would be rough, but it’d help him stay focused for now.

A short while later, Shining was making use of a privilege only a very, very short list of ponies had. Laying next to the Princess of Love on her personal bed. The only other two allowed were just Twily and Princess Celestia herself, as far as he knew. Both of them were reclining on their backs, not touching but side by side. He always found himself secretly wondering what it would be like to wake up next to Cadence everyday someday, whenever he found himself where he was now. With everything they’d been through together, he knew he was going to finally bucking confess he loved her more than life itself. Falling in love with Twilight made him get it through his head that he truly couldn’t live without Cadence, and perhaps he’d get to wake up beside her from time to time soon.

Staring blankly at the ornate, frilly canopy of the bed, Shining sighed in a final resignation. I’ll start with confessing, I guess. I can’t go another day without doing so, but even as sure as I am about her feelings for me, it’s so hard to say it. Ugh, a bucking combat zone is easier to deal with. Maybe if…

“I…” He started, losing his voice for a moment and taking another deep breath. “Cady, I’ve seen those looks you give me when you think I’m not looking. The ones where you seem happy and sad at the same time. I… I’m not trying to deflect telling you what happened. This happens to be related for me and…” Shining had to pause at his own words in a moment of private bemusement. “And, well, it feels easier to start with that side of things before I go on. I have ideas, but will you tell me the real reason why this time?”

Cadence bit her bottom lip as she tensed, also staring at the canopy over the bed, her mane and tail brushed back out after they got back to her suite after she indulged in his offer to do it for her while he got his head together. The moment he asked that question, she suddenly felt very trapped. She could tell he was being honest in his request, so she had no real way to get around answering him. It was one of those rare moments she was reminded that Shining knew her far better than she let herself believe at times, and he had noticed her trying to be sneaky with those looks of frustrated desire. She had felt his love for her grow a surprising degree in the past couple months, but it grew at the same time his love for another had as well, which left her with her current worry of possibly losing him.

Even as Princess of Love, she had some things she was limited on. Such as him simply choosing another over her. Though she’d dragged him into a lot of mischief and fun over the years, she could never condone exercising her rank or magic to actually force his love. It was far too precious to her to spoil it like that, and she long ago decided she’d rather hurt from rejection than feel the guilt of that kind of coercion.

It wasn’t long before she found there were no fancy ways for her to say it, so she just kept it simple and honest as she looked at him, though her voice began at a near whisper. “B-because I’m terrified you’re going to love that other mare instead of me and I’ll never get to have you after trying so hard for so long to just get you to stop dodging and see me the way I see you but now you’ve fallen in love with that other mare and I have no idea if I still have a chance of keeping you for myself because you mean so much to me and I can’t believe it’s been so hard to just make you see how I feel about you but never wanted to push you and if you weren’t there anymore I really don’t know what my life would look like because I can’t even imagine my life without you around!”

Shining blinked as he listened, turning his head to stare at her halfway through as her voice rose nearly to a shout, a scared, tearful look in her eyes. Giving a slight cough and feeling like his heart was in his throat, he responded in a low tone, filled with more emotion than he quite knew what to do with as the words came out almost on their own. “Cady, I know. Well, I’ve suspected for years at least, but I have never felt I was good enough for you to even begin thinking I could ever deserve your love. I had been resigned to just staying your best friend for a long time now because of that. You can be the wildest, craziest mare I’ve ever met, that can kick more flank than a lot of the stallions under my command, yet at the drop of a hat, you turn into the most delicate, sweetest, most tender caregiver of foals I’ve ever seen, and pass through a doorway, suddenly the young but talented, highly skilled diplomat appears, helping build international treaties and mediating trade disputes. And then after all that, you slip into an evening gown and become an elite socialite, able to read the flow of the power games among the Nobles better than most, and dancing so elegantly when called for that there’s very few heads that don’t turn your way to watch in awe of you. All of it even manages to come across in such a way that you’re loved by just about every pony you meet and you somehow keep everything together in this impossible package of amazing that you somehow think I’m deserving enough to even be in the very presence of at all. Yeah, I might have had a good career in the Guard so far, and have some promising future prospects, but I’m still just a soldier. I still don’t know what I could ever offer you that you don’t already have mountains of.”

Cadence was staring at him, open-mouthed as her eyes watered, before she found her voice again. “Shining, I, it’s always just been you I wanted. To you, I’m never a princess when you’re not on duty and stuck obeying protocols. I’m just a mare you like to cheer up when I’m down, or crack a well-timed joke at because you’re trying to get me to laugh with a snort again. You make me feel special because you don’t treat me that way. And you’re the only stallion in Equestria that never lets me forget that time when we were teenagers that I was sick and sneezed all over your face with that stupidly large amount of snot I still can’t explain. It even left a connecting strand of it from my nose to yours for those awkward ten seconds of mutual shock, and yet you stayed at my bedside until I got better anyway. Besides, it’s not like I do all that stuff you said all in one day or something.”

He was long since used to the memory of what would forever be known between them as The Sneeze. Even the part where he’d had his mouth open to ask her something when it happened. That was the day he knew he had to love her in some deep way, because somehow he only spit into the bucket beside her bed and wiped off his face with a towel before immediately pretending it never happened. He was content to forget it entirely until she apologized profusely after she got better. He had teased her about it every once in awhile ever since. A well-placed call of Booger Princess was so completely foalish, but it never failed to make her blush in the cutest way.

In response to her attempted denial though, Shining just gave her a flat look. “Cady, all that stuff I just said was on the day of the Grand Galloping Gala a couple weeks ago.”

Cadence’s cheeks reddened, giving him a sheepish smile at that.

He’d given her compliments before, but what he just said was a whole different level. All it was missing was three direct words stating his feelings to be any more obvious.

A moment later, Cadence realized it had just happened. They would never be only friends after this. They were either on the cusp of finally pursuing their romance together, or it all just ended before her eyes. She needed to know the truth and she needed it without another moment of delay.

Moving like a crashing wave, Cadence rolled closer and pulled his face towards her as their lips met, crushing her mouth against his. They’d had a rare peck on the lips, but now there were no questions of intent or friendly touches. She tried to fill it with a feeling that all but screamed her love at him out loud.

The feeling of him responding in full a moment later was easily one of the greatest feelings she’d ever known. She didn’t even remember when their tongues started to dance together, just that she wanted more, and more, and more.

Cadence was soon laying on top of him, careful of his now wrapped left shoulder, the kiss ongoing as she began rocking against the bulge of his sheath. It was a foregone conclusion to her that she was finally going to have him inside her in a matter of another minute or two. Seeing a tear slip from Shining’s eye sobered her up instantly. Whatever was going on, he was very right. They had to finish talking about whatever it was that had happened. The stallion she loved so much was clearly torn up inside from something and she needed to know why. Screwing each other’s brains out to celebrate finally admitting they loved each other could wait until this other problem was settled.

Snuggling against his side with absolutely no hesitation, Cadence held him as he pulled himself together. “You’re right. We need to talk first. No matter what though, you’re stuck with me now, Shiny. Unless you did something really dishonorable, which I’m positive isn’t the case because I know you too well, there is nothing that will make me let you go. Especially not now, understand? Maybe we’ll finish talking and get to make love tonight, or maybe it won’t feel right afterward and it can wait for tomorrow, but either way, I’m keeping you right here in my bed until morning, and until I know you’ve worked through whatever happened as much as possible. So start talking. I am here for you.”

Shining turned his head to her and softly kissed her nose as his eyes misted, annoyed that it was so hard to hold things back around her, and yet, he was desperately thankful she never failed to make him feel like he always could. “C-Cady, I… You know how I said I never felt good enough for you? Well, that’s kind of what got me into this mess. I, well, kinda went to that Blind Date Company dating service here in Canterlot a while ago. I know you’re a huge fan of what they do and figured I could make use of them. After a lot of thought, I wanted to try getting some sexual experience, hoping to gain some bedroom skills and extra confidence so I could finally work up the nerve to tell you how I felt about you. Maybe get a little more to offer you or something.” He sighed. “You’re right, too. I did meet a mare that I fell in love with. To be quite honest, I still might have lost my nerve in approaching you in the end, if my love for her hadn’t made me truly realize just how much you really mean to me, and I discovered I really can’t imagine my life without you either.”

Cadence felt her breath catch in her throat, not really sure how to respond. Various ideas passed through her mind. He wouldn’t actually ask for a threesome or something, would he? Cadence felt her heart practically stop, almost absently holding him tighter as he began to shake quietly against her as his words ran out. A thousand things suddenly ran through her mind all at once, and her heart suddenly ached so very deeply for them both. Of all the mares in the world, it’s the only one I’ve ever and still…! Oh, Aunty, you weren’t kidding after bringing me into your work to prepare for the dangers coming our way, and me for the Empire’s return.
